BIOGRAPHY Rafael Alberti Merello (16 December 1902 – 28 October 1999) was a Spanish artist, a member of the Generation of '27. He is considered one of the greatest literary figures of the so-called Silver Age of Spanish Literature, and he won numerous prizes and awards. He died aged 96. After the Spanish Civil War, he went into exile because of his Marxist beliefs. On his return to Spain after the death of Franco, he was named Hijo Predilecto de Andalucía in 1983.

"MARINERO EN TIERRA" Mr. Alberti was born in El Puerto de Santa Maria, near Cadiz. Cadiz and its shimmering bay were constant reference points in his work. His first book of poems, ''Marinero en Tierra'' (''Sailor on Dry Land''), written when he was 23, won him Spain's national literature prize in 1925 and lasting fame. The predominant colours of Marinero en tierra are the colours of the sea: white, blue and green.
WHITE It is used in images of light. LA MAR DEL PUERTO VIENE... La mar del Puerto viene negra y se va. ¿Sabes adónde va? ¡No lo sé yo! De blanco, azul y verde, vuelve y se va. ¿Sabes adónde va? ¡Sí lo sé yo!
DÍA DE TRIBULACIÓN "¡Oh Virgen remadora, ya clarea la alba luz sobre el llanto de los mares!"
It is also used in images of coldness to describe young girls. MADRIGAL DE BLANCA-NIEVE Blanca-nieve se fue al mar. ¡Se habrá derretido ya! Blanca-nieve, flor del norte, se fue al mar del mediodía, para su cuerpo bañar. ¡Se habrá derretido va! Blanca-nieve, Blancay-fría, ¿por qué te fuiste a la mar para tu cuerpo bañar? ¡Te habrás derretido ya!
CRUZ DE VIENTO "Nevada clara de nieve, flor de los témpanos, tú, sobre una corza marina".
RED Red suggests passion and it is associated with fire and blood.
Blood: color of the landscape "Vega florida. Alfanjes de los ríos, tintos en sangre pura de las flores"
A hot summer day "¡Oh estío tropical, rojo, abrasado, bajo el plumero azul de la palmera!"
Red: drama and movement of a stormy sea Mala ráfaga Boyeros del mar decían: —Bueyes rojos, raudas sombras, ya oscuro, ¿hacia dónde irían? (¡Fuego en la noche del mar!) Carabineros del viento tampoco, no lo sabían: —¿Adónde esos bueyes rojos, raudas sombras, volarían? (¡Ardiendo está todo el mar!)
BLACK It is used in images of purely descriptive nature (cueva, luto, sombra, muerto)
Black: description of the night "Las puertas del ocaso, ya cerradas, tapian de luto el campo".
Black: an ominous sea Sol negro... De una mar, de una mar muerta, la empujó un mal viento Carabela negra, cargada, hundida de huesos. Mar negro.
Black: evil, but in an innocent way (lullabies) Night birds "Ya en las grutas marinas ladran sus perros".
Black: burial at sea Grumete En las bodegas del buque, muerto y solo. ¿Quién será? ¿Qué nombre el suyo, marineros? ¡A tu tumba, cueva abierta de los mares! Noroeste. Noche fría.
GREEN It symbolizes the sea Cruz de viento Nevada clara de nieve, flor de los tĂŠmpanos, tĂş, sobre una corza marina. Norte. Sur. Dorada, clara de oro, flora de los fuegos, tĂş, sobre un cocodrilo verde. Este. Oeste. Madrigal de un peine perdido "De una verde sirenita que se los peina a la orilla, mientras la orilla, va y viene"...
Green: associated with land, but often found in images describing the sea. "Tus trenzas de perejil se te enreden por la yerba".
To describe vegetation of the land "¡Mis verdes sauces llorones!"
To make reference to the light on the water "El faro verde de Cádiz le raya de añil la arena".
BLUE Blue: water Madre, vísteme a la usanza... —Madre, vísteme a la usanza de las tierras marineras: el pantalón de campana, la blusa azul ultramar y la cinta milagrera. —¿Adónde vas, marinero, por las calles de la tierra? —¡Voy por las calles del mar!
Waves on the sea
Murallas azules, olas... Murallas azules, olas, del África, van y vienen. Cuando van... ¡Ay, quién con ellas se fuera! ¡Ay, quién con ellas volviera! Cuando vuelven...
