IELA REPORT 88 AUTUMN 2018 IELA CONNECT 2018 Meet us in Shanghai 4 NEW IELA MEMBERS 171 members from 55 countries P.R. CHINA COUNTRY FILE Logistics overview POST EVENT REPORTS 33rd IELA CONGRESS & 7th PARTNERING EVENT June 21st • 26th, SAN FRANCISCO 2018 THE FUTURE WAS HERE

Dear Friends,

It is a great honour to be elected as Chairman by IELA Members. You put your trust and faith in me and I accept the immense responsibility of ensuring that all my actions, and those of the entire Board, are not only focused on the good of IELA but also on the delivery of increased benefits to its Members. This is a great opportunity to build an even stronger IELA. Whilst being elected is a very humbling experience, it is also a very exciting challenge.

San Francisco was a success on all fronts and my gratitude goes to Mariane Ewbank, to all Congress Hosts, to the Secretariat Team, to all Sponsors and to David Palomo and René Carvajal for volunteering at ‘The Bridge’.

I welcome Jeff Broom to the Board and also congratulate Christoph Rauch, James Ng, Feyzan Erel and Guido Fornelli for their re-election. I also welcome Guido as the new Vice Chairman and Treasurer. I am delighted at the opportunity to work along with him. His wisdom and ‘passion for the good of IELA’ will be a continuous guide for me.

I have made a commitment to identify and bring in new leaders within IELA. This is for me of critical importance as the historical reliance on a few individuals remaining on the Board is, in my opinion, very restrictive and does not acknowledge the full potential of leadership qualities which exist among our Members.

Other commitments relate to expanding IELA’s reach in unrepresented countries , increased involvement of women in leadership, putting the structure for an IELA Academy in place, augmenting education and training programmes and enhancing member benefits through increased regional & local level involvement.

In order to facilitate new leaders taking responsibility in the Association, the new Board removed a restrictive By-Law that required a mandated period of membership of a Working Group for becoming its Chairman. Further, the Board has appointed a Task Force with Greg Keh as its Chairman to review and modify the IELA Articles and By-Laws.

I am hoping that within my tenure new Articles and By-Laws will get implemented which will promote a new leadership to take reins of IELA.

Vincenzo Scrudato is the new Chairman of Education and Training Programme Working Group together with Bas Wiendels as Vice Chairman. Similarly, we have Sandi Trotter as the new Chairperson of the Membership Working Group with Lena Widman as Vice Chairperson. We also have a new Chairman with Roland Kreitmayr for the Industry Relations Working Group and a new Vice Chairperson with Jacqui Nel. The team at Think Tank Working Group remains the same with Tania Khodayar as Chairperson and Alexandra Erdmann as the Vice Chairperson. Similarly the team at Standards & Customs Working Group remains the same with Dominique Geiser as Chairman and Daniel Mithran as Vice Chairman. In total our five Working Groups are lead by five women and five men. All these leaders will be actively supported by five Board Mentors - Jim Kelty (Education & Training Programme), Emmanuel Pitchelu (Think Tank), Guido Fornelli (Industry Relations), Mariane Ewbank (Standards & Customs) and Jeff Broom (Membership).

IELA’s stature within the Exhibition Industry has increased immensely over the past few years due to enhanced and active participation in many exhibition industry forums. It will be our endeavour to further increase this engagement. We will have increased representation at not only the UFI Congress and IAEE Expo-Expo but also at other regional and local forums.

IELA will also be launching its Security Guidelines at the IELA Connect event in Shanghai on October 15th. This initiative further establishes IELA as a torchbearer in the domain of Safety & Security within the Exhibition Industry

IELA is your Association and it is up to us to reach our full potential together. Each member can contribute, so please do not hesitate to volunteer for the good of us all.

Come forward to take a leadership role in your Association. Each one of you is a successful business leader and each one of you is a future Chairman of IELA. Just take the first step.

Wishing you all success in the exhibition season now rolling out.

Cheers!!!

USING INGENUITY TO MEET TIGHT SHIPPING DEADLINES

Under an extremely short deadline, Felix Expo Logistics was contracted on 9th July to pick up a unicorn sculpture in China and deliver it by 19th July to a show in Genting Highlands, Malaysia.

When Felix went to retrieve the sculpture, it discovered that the pallet and packing materials were completely unusable and below even basic packing standards. Thus, the shipment was not airworthy.

Nevertheless, Felix Expo Logistics was excited to take on the challenge.

To reduce the risk of damage and accommodate the limitations of the only airline willing to accept such a shipment (Malaysian Airlines), Felix had to construct a new shipping crate.

Using aluminum foil and padding, Faber rubber, fiber solvent and other high-quality materials, Felix built a crate that could be tilted on its side and still protect the fragile, 1.600 kg sculpture made of fiberglass and reinforced plastic legs. A crew of four worked around the clock to complete the repacking.

Despite the sub-optimal conditions of the job, Felix Expo Logistics was able to pick up the sculpture and pack and deliver it on time, surpassing customer expectations.

INTERFLOW MANAGES MASSIVE LOGISTICS REQUIREMENTS OF POPE’S VISIT TO IRELAND

Pope Francis chose Dublin to host the 2018 World Meeting of Families 2018 (WMOF2018) guided by the theme ‘The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World’ Interflow Logistics was appointed as the Official Freight Forwarder for the triennial event that brings together families from across the world to celebrate and pray.

For Interflow, WMOF2018 was a layered and multi-faceted challenge on a massive scale, and indeed, the challenge did not end until well after the final mass on August 26th. But it was a challenge relished by the Irish firm, which has, over the past few years, grown from a fledgling exhibition freight forwarder into a competitive international logistics company.

Interflow Logistics earlier shipped to the Vatican the WMOF2018 Icon of the Holy Family commissioned by event organisers. It was written by iconographer Mihai Cucu and assisted by the Redemptoristine Sisters of the Monastery of St Alphonsus, Iona Road, Dublin.

Interflow was responsible for the papal, pastoral, and volunteer supply inventory, including anything from vestments, prints, furniture, chalices, ciboria, altars, ambos, and the icon. The firm also delivered pilgrim bags for 44.000 people.

Events took place in four locations across Dublin, including the World Meeting of Families at the Royal Dublin Society, Festival of Families at Croke Park Stadium, Presidential Meeting at Dublin Castle and final mass at Phoenix Park. Road closures and security screening during the Papal visit added to the challenge.

There is no lack of interest in the Pope in Ireland, but the success of this visit was measured by the number of attendees, and by how the Pontiff responded to the issues raised. It has been one of those events on which the Interflow team can look back in years to come and say, ‘We were there.’ t

3-D PRINTING SOLUTIONS

DB Schenker is the world’s first logistics service provider offering its customers an extensive 3-D printing service. Customers can now upload the 3-D template via the online portal eSchenker, select materials and color, consult prices, place orders, and have the printing delivered.

At present, printing includes medical devices made from stainless steel, robot gripper fingers made from plastic, or customised packaging material.

DB Schenker organises the printing and delivery via its data platform. DB Schenker does not have its own printers, but uses a digital business model within a partner network of start-ups as well as established companies.

Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics, the DB Schenker Enterprise Lab in Dortmund has been analysing the opportunities and results of 3-D printing since 2015.

‘3-D printing can be an alternative to transporting goods in certain cases. As the world’s first logistics service provider, we aim to leverage the potential of this technology with an innovative offering for our customers. In this way, DB Schenker is able to meet growing demand’, says Jochen Thewes, CEO of Schenker AG.

According to DB Schenker, growing customer demand for the printing service can be noted throughout all manufacturing sectors and mostly concerns the sourcing of spare or particularly rare parts. In this regard, a notable growth in demand is expected for spare parts made of metal.

Aluminum, stainless steel, and plastic are currently used as materials for 3-D printing. Other materials, such as titanium and other composites are set to follow. t

DHL SUPPORTED EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS BERLIN 2018 AS OFFICIAL LOGISTICS PARTNER

DHL Trade Fairs & Events coordinated the transport and storage of sports equipment, venue logistics, and onsite support for the European Athletics Championships 2018 in Berlin. In the run-up to the August competitions, the experts from DHL Trade Fairs & Events advised and planned logistics for the managing organisation, Berlin Leichtathletik-EM 2018 GmbH.

• DHL Trade Fairs & Events managed a 1.000 square meter warehouse and coordinated the venue logistics and deliveries of sports equipment.

• A 970-kilogram shot put ring was among the items transported.

‘In athletics, it’s all about maximising qualities like strength and endurance to achieve overall exceptional performance. We at DHL Trade Fairs & Events can identify with these values as we strive to optimise our efficiency and coordination to provide excellent service. We are proud to support the European Athletics Championships Berlin 2018 with our transport solutions’, declares Vincenzo Scrudato, managing director, DHL Trade Fairs & Events.

About 1.600 athletes from 47 different sports competed over six days of competition in Berlin. Handling the challenging logistics of a sports event of this size is a core competency of DHL Trade Fairs & Events.

DHL Trade Fairs & Events was the Sole Logistics Partner for the European Athletics Championships. In addition to door-to-door logistics services with flexible delivery on-demand for athletes and VIPs, DHL assembled 8.500 welcome bags with items from sponsors, and transported a shot put ring with a diameter of approximately 240 centimeters and weight of 970 kilograms from the Olympic Stadium to two different venues in Berlin. Further, two semi-trailers served as mobile storage space for vaulting poles, and DHL provided additional equipment and on-site support.

In line with the group’s environmental protection program GoGreen, DHL Trade Fairs & Events is increasingly deploying green logistics solutions in its operations. Deliveries of smaller goods and items between the competition venues or athletes quarters took place using the climate-neutral electric van StreetScooter. By the year 2025, Deutsche Post DHL Group will increase the carbon efficiency of its own activities and those of its transport subcontractors by 50% globally, as compared to the 2007 baseline. At the local level, the Group aims to improve the lives of people right where they live and work using clean transport solutions. All in all, the Athletics Championships were a great success for all participants. t

Airways Freight Corporation is a privately held, fully licensed air and ocean freight forwarder, TSA licensed Indirect Air Carrier, licensed truckload broker and a licensed customs broker with a national permit to perform clearances at every customs port in the United States. Airways has operated in the exhibition transportation business for over 30 years and has official appointments at hundreds of events in the US and abroad, including some of the largest exhibitions in the USA.

What makes your affiliated office an interesting asset for the IELA network?

There is a tremendous amount of exhibition and event activity in Southern California and often that comes with a demand for a physical presence. This office gives us the ability to better support jobs our IELA partners bring to this region with an exhibition logistics professional who will make sure IELA partner customers have the best possible experience with their events.

How do you think Airways will benefit from the affiliation of the San Diego office? IELA partners that don’t know us have a misconception that we can only support events and customers in our region of the Midwest. Affiliating this office in San Diego helps to dispel this misconception and help attract new partners who might not otherwise have reached out to us. t

About us

We founded Expo-Cargo Ltd. in December 2002 with an office on the fairground in Basel. Through our personal, high end service we could quickly count on many loyal customers who appreciated our services. Each shipment is monitored up to the stand by our long-standing on-site managers with almost 30 years of experience in exhibition logistics. We organise all fairground activities including transport and all types of customs formalities. As a subsidiary of a medium-sized, international family-owned freight forwarding company, we can call on professional employees for major events.

As a result, we were soon able to set up our export trade fair services for European and overseas destinations. We also serve our customers at exhibitions and events in all locations in Switzerland. Worldwide round trips, cross trade, and special services are now also among our activities. We love the special challenges!

What makes your affiliated office an interesting asset for the IELA network? If you need a partner where the exhibitor is not just one of the hundreds, you can count on Expo-Cargo services ! Many customers became friends and friends keep coming back.

How do you think Expo-Basel will benefit from the affiliation of the Basel office?

Since our foundation we have worked together with many IELA members and appreciate their professional services. Expo-Cargo benefited from the IELA network for many years and so it is only logical that we too become part of this organisation to give something back. t

Dear Members,

Every climber experiences this sentiment: The goal is not the Summit, it’s just an ecstatic stop on the way. The real challenge: Thinking beyond the apparent objective and set your sights on your personal path.

We know the challenges of keeping current in a swiftly changing marketplace. In San Francisco we built a safe space to voice our needs and see the exhibition world from a different perspective. We explored the best opportunities for innovation and growth making the topics of discussions ours.

IELA gives you the opportunity to connect and create new ideas with peers from across the world. It is now in our hands to resolve on how we will lead our business forwards becoming the best leaders we can be.

‘After joining the PE many years ago, we are pleased to be the first full member of IELA from a white spot country – Vietnam. We had the opportunity to attend the main Congress in San Francisco. It was very impressive and well organised. The interactions with other members were very useful and beneficial. Our business has been increasing from IELA members since then, which is a testament to the confidence and trust IELA members have in our operation. ‘As a new member, it is natural that I would have carried some degree of skepticism in the run-up to the meeting. After having met the wonderful personalities from across the globe, I feel a sense of accomplishment and pride to have associated with all those involved.

The vibrant, outgoing leadership and the cool and calm incoming leadership, along with a professional working committee and a friendly and efficient organising team, are the characteristics that will linger in my mind for years to come.

The IELA Congress and Partnering Event brought about a sense of oneness - a sense of family. Not only did I enjoy the speakers, the educational material, the networking, and the outdoor events, but also the atmosphere was a warm and friendly one. This event truly displayed a high degree of professionalism and inculcated friendship amongst the IELA membership. Of the many people I met, some will remain as friends, some as business partners, some as industry mentors, and some as all these put together. Hats off to IELA!!!‘ t

‘After more than 30 years in the industry, it was natural for EXPO PLUS to join the IELA family. It’s really nice to meet old friends from all over the world at the same time, in the same place, and also to start new partner relationships’. t

‘As a first time attendee and new member, I was pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome and camaraderie I witnessed and experienced during IELA 2018. In the forwarding world, the competition is fierce and ever present, yet there is also a strong sense of community. IELA FORUM on Digitization

Lightening the Age of Transformation in Exhibition & Event Logistics

This proved to be the best introduction to our 2018 Focus: Brian Acton, turned down by Facebook in 2009, sold WhatsApp four years later to Facebook for the price of USD 19 Billion. The lesson learned: THINK BIGGER & JUST DO IT.

San Francisco was an outstanding congress. The objectives of the Forum were to attract maximum participation, introduce tools for digital transformation and help participants in gaining a better understanding of the benefits of such a transformation for members. We can truly say that the event surpassed our goals!

We learned that the time to invest in digital services and in the customer journey is now. Digitization does not end with the creation of an online booking tool and a faster loading website. Trends are developing on a daily basis as the Internet of Things, advanced Data Analytics, or Blockchain enable us to offer improved services and more convenience to our customers. These technologies can help us to create tailor-made solutions for customers and smarter pricing models. It goes without saying that even new, value-added services like end-to-end visibility of shipments will be possible.

The earlier that we, the exhibition logistics companies, adopt these trends in order to offer a better experience to our customers, the more we will reap the benefits.

If we can find ways to use these technologies to develop new, data-driven products and services, not only our exhibition logistics but the whole industry will experience change.

IELA has now five new task forces aimed at developing new software and technologies which will inspire our business and therefore impact the entire industry.

24 IELA}}REPORT88
Join one of the task forces and support future change! t

ABC of Disruptive Innovation: How to change your future?

This was the question raised by our Keynote speaker Patrick Schwerdtfeger to make us think on a wider scale in order to stay on the right side of the leverage equation in this truly exponential environment.

Technology, like having the “big elephant in the room” as he said, is a form of leverage. On the one hand, a few businesses are leveraging the trends themselves, but on the other hand, there are a lot of businesses that are being leveraged by these very same trends. They are fighting really hard every year to maintain their market position.

“The future is already here, it just isn’t being evenly distributed yet”

There are many ways to leverage trends. It can be achieved by leveraging software, the cloud, mobile technologies, wearable technology, virtual reality in all its different facets. The questions we have to be asking are: Can we use the technology in our businesses? Can we then reap more benefits in terms of revenue?

How can our business models be adapted and benefit fully from the world of “Intelligent Everything”? Artificial Intelligence, Intelligent Machines, Blockchain Protocols, Natural Language Processes, Autonomous Vehicles, Data Binding, Cloud Computing ... these are just some examples of today’s reality.

There are two types of innovation: Incremental Innovation, which originates from a mix of expertise and Scientifics, is when everything gets a little better every time. But the reverse side to innovation is Disruptive Innovation

This is innovation which invalidates existing business models. It comes from the outskirts, the edge, with a tendancy of coming from adjacent markets and overlaps We then have to ask ourselves this: Who is your largest supplier and to whom do they sell? Who is your most important customer and from where else do they buy? Here is where disruption might occur.

disruptive innovation

There are many ways to think even bigger and stay on the right side of the leverage equation.

We will definitely keep in mind his recommendations, pushing our industry to adopt a more far-reaching vision, emphasizing the importance of not only inspiring your staff but everyone around you, including your competitors. This makes you the first to innovate. No competition exists along this route because no-one had the courage to be the first to try.

Do not just look after your upsales but take a closer look at your cash trap customers explained Patrick. He insisted on asking several key questions: Who are your cash trap customers? What is the biggest threat to your industry? How could your assets be used differently? What else can you sell through this channel?

Patrick’s Keynote Speech was just the perfect booster for our delegates to warm up in the introduction to the 5 Streams to Action sessions on Automated Logistics, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Data Analytics and IoT.

The full speech is available to IELA members on IELA TV in the Private Zone on iela.org! t

IELA FORUM Think Campus

The customer is our guide.

The 2019 IELA Forum kicked off with three discussion panels and one common goal: driving growth and boosting action.

Divided into small group discussions, our delegates could attend one of three specific topics addressing the latest digital trends and developments in today’s workplace: Digitization, Diversity and Digital Natives.

It was the fulfilment of our goal as an association to ensure that every single member goes back home with at least ONE new idea to face this new era of constant change. t

IT’S ALL ABOUT POST SAN FRANCISCO CONGRESSCS
Thank you Cathy Breden, Sonia Thomas and Jeff Butler for helping us paving new ways!

#THINK1: DIGITIZATION IN THE EXHIBITION INDUSTRY 4.0 Sonia Thomas

How was the experience driving the discussion about Digitization during the IELA Think Campus?

ST : It was very insightful for me to gain the logistics perspective in the organiser – venue – service providers triangle, and I was impressed by the innovative approaches that the group has already adopted. The group was very energised and it was a real pleasure to work with everyone.

What conclusions did your group come to?

ST : The group was already very familiar with the needs of their clients and with a strong customer focus. At the end of the session, they came to the conclusion that there were numerous tools out there to be developed, which are within their reach in financial and technical terms. They were also aware of the need to constantly think of new means to enhance performance and remain ahead of the competition.

How do you think the Digitization of exhibition logistics can impact the exhibition industry?

ST: Increasing the quality of logistics can clearly help improve the overall experience for exhibitors. One suggestion, for example, was an effective system to track merchandise easily while in transit. The group had a very proactive stance when it came to providing even better services through the use of technology, and this can only help improve our industry as a whole! t

#THINK2: DIVERSITY

Cathy Breden

How was the experience driving the discussion about Diversity during the first IELA Think Campus?

CB: As the facilitator, it was important for me to be sure the audience understood what diversity is and why inclusivity in the workplace is important for success. We had a good discussion and the information exchange was valuable.

What conclusions did your group come to and how do you think their application can impact and benefit the companies in the exhibition industry?

CB : The current workforce is aging and many companies have a lot of institutional knowledge. Who will carry that knowledge on?

• Young people think, act, and work differently. Hire students graduating from university and learn from them. Ask them for their ideas.

• Oftentimes, bringing in individuals from outside the industry will provide new ideas for conducting business and identifying opportunities.

• Work with young people who join the company and find out what they want to become. Help them achieve their goals through mentorship.

• Focus on promoting individuals based on competency rather than longevity.

Identifying strategies for innovation:

• First thing to do is ask for ideas. Give permission and respect to those who do provide ideas.

• Executive teams often work effectively. Build teams with lower levels, titles and, tenure; let them brainstorm innovative ideas. Assign responsibility to the teams for innovation.

• It was noted that in some cultures, it is difficult for individuals to speak up and voice their ideas, even when given permission to do so. t

#THINK3: DIGITAL NATIVES

How was the experience driving the discussion about Digital Natives during the IELA Think Campus?

JB: It was great to have representatives from so many different countries in one room discussing this topic. I was blown away to find that regardless of the country someone is from they face similar issues. Different members were able to chime in and ask questions, but more importantly, they shared ways in which they are addressing problems at their own firms.

What outcomes did your group come to regarding Digital Natives, especially in the exhibition logistics industry?

JB : The discussion yielded several outcomes:

We identified the problems of entitlement/ impatience, breaking down a career into milestones, and quantifying what experience is necessary to move up the corporate ladder.

We determined that one approach to hiring Millennials that might leave quickly is giving them a trial run or putting them through the tough stuff early on to see if they have what it takes to stay with the company.

How do you think Digital Natives can impact the future of their companies?

JB: From the solutions that we discussed during the session, I believe that employers in IELA will be able to work more effectively with Digital Natives and increase overall company retention. t

u Make it sexier

u Have a better understanding of what attracts Millennials to certain jobs

Selecting

u Reach out to college students

u Attract professionals from other segments of the industry and also outside events

Keeping - aspects that can retain professionals

u Transparency in the company

u Profit sharing or any system that can recognize and reward team members

u Elimination of poor performers

u Investment in education and training

u Allowing individuals to be part of the business process and making a positive change in their company.

Project and task forces:

u Webinar targeting the middle- and highmanagement levels of HR

u Develop the Exchange Program among IELA Members (Idea being developed already by the Think Tank Working Group)

‘I had a mind-blowing experience during this discussion. I have been involved in the moving & exhibition industry since my early schooling, but had no work experience before that. I was eager to hear about best practices on hiring interns, work-life balance, and staff retention. The cross-cultural and operations training that can be gained by sending employees overseas to work with our counterparts resonated with me. I also appreciated hearing about the educational incentives, such as the IELA Winter Seminar or the IELA Operations Summit, which can help attract new employees’.

‘I totally enjoyed the breakout session on “Keeping the right people” by Mariane Ewbank. This is such a key component to the success of each of our companies and “people” are the reason we as IELA members work with each other. The sharing of ideas amongst other business leaders was key. It reinforced things that we are already doing that are right, and more importantly, it gave us new information that we could use and implement. I particularly liked the idea of an IELA exchange program for training employees as a way of keeping and growing key employees. I also felt that sharing profits with top employees and also eliminating the low performers was key. I was glad to hear that our colleagues and partners are focused on the same kind of best practices. I look forward to more sharing of these same subjects next year, and to identify who has implemented what and learn how successful it has been’.

#BRAIN2: DIGITAL ADVERTISING & CONTENT MARKETING: HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DIGITAL ADVERTISING AND CONTENT MARKETING TACTICS? Ludivine Bastien

Participants confirmed that marketing and digital communication were two areas to which they needed to pay more attention. Their main reasons for inactivity were lack of time and creative resources.

We shared: Content Marketing is any piece of communication that a company creates to generate interest in a specific topic/solution.

6 Key steps to create a basic Content Marketing Plan:

u 1. Outline your goals – focus on your needs, be strategic.

u 2. Describe your ideal client avatar (persona) – you’ll gain the ability to tailor your marketing efforts and connect with your target audience to meet their needs and solve their problems.

u 3. Iron out your content types (video, interviews, etc.) and the frequency.

u 4. Set strategic KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) – to track your progress.

u 5. Brainstorm content ideas - you are an active company, you have the ingredients to develop content. Find

sources of content you can share. Find ways to re-use content.

u 6. Create a content promotion plan –Be realistic. Go one step at a time, this is a marathon.

‘I am glad that I attended this session since it helped me to clear some of my queries about digital advertising and content marketing. Curious thoughts or questions that have always existed about these topics (for which there was never enough time to research) were answered in this session. Moreover, I think what I enjoyed the most about this session was that instead of being a boring early morning lecture, it was a lively interactive session. “Content Marketing” & “Reusing Content” were my best takeaways from this session’.

#BRAIN3: GDPR - EU GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION Elizabeth Niehaus

‘Breakfast Brains was a great way to start the day! It was a very useful discussion about the benefits and use of social media in our industry. As a company that is new to some aspects of social media, I found it to be helpful and informative guidance on selecting relevant and interesting content. We look forward to continuing to use what we learned so that we can better interact with our customers! The subject complemented the main theme of the Congress’.

EXHIBITION SUPERVISOR - CHARLES KENDALL EVENT LOGISTICS, UNITED KINGDOM www.charleskendall.com

‘For me personally, it was difficult to believe that advertising on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. is so important. But in this session, Ludivine showed all the participants the benefits for logistics companies of using social media inexpensively. It is amazing how easy and fast you can reach your clients and show them how your company works onsite and what you are doing for your customers. This session opened my eyes on this topic. In the future, our company will use social media’.

BTG EVENTS EUROPE LTD., SWITZERLAND www.btg-suisse.ch

#3

GDPR is everywhere since May 25th 2018 and it can be scary if you do not take control. The approach of our Breakfast Brains session was to discuss each attendee’s doubts and determine how to use the regulation to our advantage. Because Yes, GDPR is an opportunity to share your value proposition with your partners.

WHY? GDPR is all about transparency, confidentiality, and trust. Show your clients and potential clients you are a secure and safe service chain partner.

‘The Breakfast Brains GDPR session was a source of really important information for me. Elizabeth has a deep understanding about this complicated subject. What she conveyed was a new way to look at this subject by turning a ‘“got to” into a “get to”. She laid out very specific steps on how to embrace these European regulations and address them in a manageable way, changing the outcome into a value proposition for our clients and business partners. Those that didn’t attend missed a very valuable session’.

‘GDPR is mostly considered a big, terrible, and, business killing data monster. During our breakfast brains session, Elizabeth, together with a small team, converted this topic into a friendly and smart data guardian angel. No doubt, it’s still a very complex issue, but it may help us create more reliable relationships with our customers and keep them long-term’.

READ MORE ABOUT GDPR ON PAGE 70 WITH OUR ARTICLE,‘TRADE SHOWS – POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS EVERYWHERE, BUT HOW TO ACQUIRE THEM WHILE BEING IN COMPLIANCE WITH GDPR?’

‘The breakfast presentation on GDPR was very relevant to me. It is a regulation that affects our sales opportunities deeply and there is much lack of clarity on how the regulation is to be implemented. Many theories go round. Elizabeth took the effort to break this regulation down into clear steps on what it means, how it needs to be implemented and what the effects will be. Personally, I used her examples and outline in discussions with organisers and it helped establish a clear path. Apart from that, to be able to discuss amongst each other how we deal with challenges like the GDPR is invaluable. Thumbs up for the breakfast initiative and Elizabeth’s input on this particular one!’

#STREAM1: AUTOMATED LOGISTICS

Mariane Ewbank

FULSTANDIG SHOWS E EVENTOS MC LTDA, BRAZIL www.fulstanding.com.br

#1

What is Automated Logistics?

• It refers to the automation gestures available in the technology of a Transportation Management System (TMS) used to manage transportation and freight departments.

• Examples: robotics, autonomous vehicles/trucks, etc.

• The advantage of automation is real-time access to an exhaustive (software, machines, etc.) and complete analysis of all data.

The keynote speaker introduced the topic of automated logistics early in the day when he reviewed the fast evolution of autonomous vehicles and the many projects leading companies have launched or are working on: the Olli bus in London, NuTonomy in Singapore, Google Car in San Francisco, the Ford Level 5 autonomous car preview for 2021, and many other projects.

Automated city driving seems futuristic today, but some applications, such as those for agriculture or highway driving, are already in use.

During the session, participants discussed the importance of autonomous vehicles for our industry, challenges and risks of the technology, and how automated logistics can address certain pains and make our work easier.

Quite a lot of adjectives came out, and the discussion gained even more steam when we discussed what the industry could gain from automated logistics. Participants divided into smaller discussion groups voiced the many benefits of automation, including ‘simplify processes’, ‘trend markets’, ‘improve efficiency’, ‘create opportunities for young generations, and others. t

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Tania Khodayar

#2

What is AI?

• Artificial intelligence (AI) is a type of computer technology, which is concerned with making machines work in an intelligent manner, similar to the way that the human mind works.

• It is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to human intelligence.

• It is applied when a machine mimics ‘cognitive’ functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as ‘learning’ and ‘problem solving’.

The main discussion of the meeting was to see how we could automate the whole logistics and operations function for tradeshows/events.

And, we came out with many ideas from real-time tracking of cargo and empties/ crates in storage to minimising human error and using 3D portable lasers.

Overall, participants were highly interested in using AI and technology to benefit IELA and its members, which will allow freight forwarders to play a role in the evolution of the technology.

We are proud to communicate that from this group discussion, we have transferred the project of creating an IELA incubator to the Think Tank Working Group. Controlling the changing technological environment in our industry is integral to providing IELA members with benefits from the latest inventions. As Patrick Schwerdtfeger mentioned, ‘Think even bigger and stay on the right side of the leverage equation’.

We need to innovate!

We need to be disruptive!

We need to have the courage to take the first steps! t

• The field is of growing importance due to the increasing reliance on computer systems, the Internet, and wireless networks such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and also due to the growth of ‘smart’ devices, including smartphones, televisions, and the various tiny devices that constitute the Internet of Things.

Soon after starting the discussion, we found out that almost everyone present in the discussion group had been victims of Cyber crime. Sharing experiences and working together to find ways that IELA could help all IELA members address this issue was a great achievement.

With the help of case studies, the IELA Secretariat will gather information on this topic and create guidelines to help members identify vulnerabilities in their companies, and get started with cyber security and employee training.

We have also identified the need to evaluate the cost of a suitable cyber security company and look for information about specific insurance, etc. t

#STREAM4: DATA ANALYTICS

What is Data Analytics?

• It is the process of examining data sets in order to draw conclusions about the information they contain, increasingly with the aid of specialised systems and software.

• Data analytics technologies and techniques are widely used in commercial industries to enable organisations to make more informed business decisions and by scientists and researchers to verify or disprove scientific models, theories, and hypotheses.

• Examples: Website analysis via Google Analytics, statistics of CRM systems, social media reports, customer segmentation, etc.

During the group discussion, we identified the challenges and risks involved with data analytics and how data analytics make our lives easier.

How might data analytics support our day-to-day business? How could success be measured? What benefits will be created? What products/services in logistics are built on data analytics?

How can IELA be of help? We came out with several proposals to work on together, as an association, to offer solutions for our members.

In order to collect data from members who could not attend this small group session, we will first conduct a survey about what IELA should do in data analytics t

#STREAM5: IOT Guido Fornelli

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

• It is the concept of connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/ or to each other).

• Enable devices to speak the same language.

• IoT allows for virtually endless opportunities and connections to take place.

• All the components that enable businesses, governments, and consumers to connect to their IoT devices, including remotes, dashboards, networks, gateways, analytics, data storage, and security is part of the Internet of Things ecosystem.

The Internet of Things is a computing concept that describes the idea of everyday physical objects being connected to the Internet and being able to identify themselves to other devices. The term is closely identified with RFID as the method of communication, although it also may include other sensor technologies, wireless technologies, or QR codes.

The IoT is significant because an object that can represent itself digitally becomes something greater than the object by itself. No longer does the object relate just to its user, but it is now connected to surrounding objects and database data. When many objects act in unison, they are known as having ‘ambient intelligence’.

The group discussed the most useful IoT solutions for the exhibition logistics business.

Tracking was a big part. This would be the basis for technologies such as the accurate and easy tracking of employee work hours, as well as giving work or forklift orders to the venue before the trucks even arrive at the gate to save time.

Intelligent Forklift Management, Predictive Maintenance, and the advantage of real time information solutions came up.

It was proposed that IELA should look into a tracking system that could be specifically tailored to the needs of exhibition logistics professionals. The participants were aware of the complex nature of such a system and discussed if it might be a valid option to roll one out in different phases, starting with a simple management programme for the industry’s needs. t

IELA Annual Standards of Performance Survey

IELA’s annual Standards of Performance Awards recognise the winners of the IELA Standards of Performance Survey. It is the benchmarking tool all IELA members use to evaluate the performance of their counterpart domestic and export agents within IELA’s worldwide network.

While all IELA members excel in delivering the best services to the exhibition industry, our survey determines the top three performers in two categories: Best Domestic Agent and Best Export Agent.

JIM Project & Expo Logistics (M) Sdn. Bhd, Malaysia

‘We extend our congratulations to all 2017 BEST AGENT Winners! The IELA Awards highlight those companies and individuals that drive excellence and improve standards in the industry. We thank all our members for their participation in the IELA STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE SURVEY and for evaluating all the partners they have worked with over the past year. The winners were the top-rated companies from the survey, a unique tool that gauges our members’ performance’, said Ms. Mariane Ewbank, IELA’s former Chairwoman.

2nd Place of the 2017 Best Domestic Agent: Eurotran Expo Service Co., Ltd.,

3rd Place of the 2017 Best Domestic Agent: Schenker Deutschland AG, Stuttgart, Germany

How did you get involved with the industry?

I started my career in the exhibition logistics business in 1985 when I was headhunted to be part of a new team as Operations Manager.

Why do you think your company has been elected by your counterparts as the Best Domestic Agent?

It is JIM’s passion and disciplined attention to detail that helped us to achieve this award. Our dedicated staff, which excels in every area of work, including quick problem-solving, has humbly set us apart, leading our peers to elect us.

What do you think IELA has done for you?

It has provided us with an international platform and recognition to elevate our business.

}}Daniel Mithran | daniel@jim.com.my

We were very surprised when Eurotran Expo Service Co. was announced as the “2nd Place winner of IELA’s Best Domestic Agent for 2017”! It’s really a great honour for a company, which just joined this global organisation one year earlier.

This award symbolises the highest recognition of our efforts and dedication to providing the best exhibition logistic services. This award is, in fact, not presented to Eurotran only, but to our whole worldwide team. We are very thankful to the IELA members for their recognition

I handed over the award to my colleagues in Stuttgart, it was a pleasure

see their pride and gratefulness for the recognition. You can even see these emotions in the photograph we spontaneously took that day.

And it probably got even better when they presented the award to Messe Stuttgart. It really is proof of their daily commitment to our joint customers, i.e. exhibitors and stand builders on the fairgrounds of Stuttgart.‘

Best Export Agent Winner 2017

Airways Freight Corporation, United States

How did you get involved with the industry?

It all started with the demand from our sales agents to service this industry. By handling tradeshow shipments from start to finish as the “Official Transportation Provider” for some of the world’s largest shows and servicing American exhibitors around the globe utilising the IELA network, Airways has become recognised as an authority in trade show exhibit transport.

Why do you think your company has been elected by your counterparts as the Best Export Agent?

It was a great honour to have been selected as ‘Best Export Agent’ for 2017. This achievement is the result of carefully building a solid reputation over the course of 30 years. Airways Freight has made IELA’s operational standards its daily mantra, which we believe was recognised by our industry counterparts by giving us such high marks.

Airways already received the Best Export Agent Award in 2013. How do you value this double recognition?

Receiving the Best Agent award a 2nd time in four years is proof of the continuity of our services. ‘We take our work and our reputation in the world very seriously. We do business with the knowledge that every single order or transaction reflects an image to our trading partners and peers’, says Ken Center, CEO. We greatly value this double recognition and will strive for a ‘three-peat’ (repeat for a third time).

What do you think IELA has done for you?

For Airways Freight, IELA has become a ‘place’ where we meet new partners and where we are able to engage in helping to further the Association by actively participating in the Working Groups, board functions, and the generation of a Training Manual (thank you Jim Kelty). Ken says it’s about ‘meeting new friends that you will enjoy knowing for your entire career and having doors opened to business opportunities that you did not know existed’. Thank you IELA Members.

2nd Place of the 2017 Best Export Agent: BTG Suisse Ltd., Switzerland

‘Wow! After our 3rd place in the 2016 survey, it makes us very proud to be elected among the best IELA export agents again in 2017, even to climb up to second place!

We once again thank all our IELA partners for their continuous support and trust in our services! The whole BTG Suisse team works very hard all year round to maintain the high standards of service we want to provide to our partners and customers. Winning the award is a team effort, and as such, special thanks are dedicated to the whole BTG team.’

‘This year, the new format of the IELA Congress was really exciting! The main subjects were related to digitization and the future of our industry. We were lucky enough to be able to participate in the Think Campus, the Breakfast Brains, and the Stream To Action sessions where we broke up into smaller groups to get more involved. We did a lot of brainstorming on new ideas during discussions on future projects of the Association. It was quite different from the usual IELA!’

‘Attending the IELA Congress has been an invaluable experience for me. The atmosphere is always open and positive and it facilitates collaboration. I always find something to bring back to my company and actually implement’. t

‘For the last several years, we, Blueline Co. Ltd, have attended the Congress and Partnering Event, including those held in Prague, Singapore, Amsterdam, Munich, and Barcelona.

Both events were very applicable to our normal operations and sales activities.

The Partnering Event, especially, has been growing in attendance every year providing us with new agency contacts and good discussions.

‘Before attending the IELA Congress for the first time, I was a bit scared and shy about meeting people with more industry knowledge. My experience was still very limited and I felt uncomfortable sharing thoughts, proposals, and ideas. After a few rounds of meetings, and after having “tasted” the international atmosphere and its wide vision during the Winter Seminar and the Operations Summit, I realised that listening to IELA Members and their stories, replying to their questions, and sharing my points of view were instead great opportunities to learn new aspects of my job. And this realisation is growing stronger with every meeting.

Without a doubt, I can say that the quality of the people (from Members to the Secretariat) was the key that helped me to improve my participation. Now, as one of the hosts for the next Congress, I can thank all of you and return to you what I’ve received from these past experiences’. t

We are going to bring our young staff in the next fiscal year and expect that it will deepen our cooperation with other participants even more’. t

‘My first experience at an IELA event was the Winter Seminar in Zurich. It was an opportunity to learn and get my feet wet. We learned a lot of new things and networked with colleagues on our level.

The Operations Summit in Hong Kong was a much deeper experience. There were many more classes and lots more networking on a different level with more experienced people.

The Congress here was really different. We did lots of thinking about the future and where our companies are headed. The bridge was a perfect metaphor. We connected with many of the people that work together in our profession. It was a great experience’. t

‘The IELA Congress in San Francisco was the first Congress I have attended! I have now attended both an Operations Summit and a Congress. The Operations Summit is good for hands-on operations, but the Congress is geared towards management success!

The industry updates were very informational and the team-building experience was fantastic! I definitely walked away from the Congress with a sense of fulfillment and am looking forward to attending the next Congress or IELA Event.’ t

‘I was involved in the IELA Forum’s Stream to Action on Automated Logistics and our group worked on how IELA could help its Members. We came up with some great ideas for future projects that IELA could work on. For example, we figured out that a very helpful tool would be a platform for us to quickly provide sales leads and get quicker feedback from our partners.

Working on the future of IELA was great and we hope this project will become a reality for all Members to benefit from’. t

Under the banner, "Bridging the World – Driving Growth – Boosting Action“ 355 experts representing 51 countries joined the IELA Partnering Event 2018 in San Francisco. Already in its 7th edition, 2.839 pre-arranged meetings were once again evidence of the success of the event which has established itself as the premier networking platform for the exhibitions industry worldwide.

Let the testimonials and snapshots below give you an impression of the numerous hours spent in both formal and informal networking during the 2018 Partnering Event in San Francisco.

The delegates were Members and Non-Members of IELA who made use of this opportunity to reconnect with old business friends as well as meet new faces from all over the world. This once-a-year opportunity entailed a lot of work for all participants, but thanks to the networking tool MyAgenda, the delegates could schedule their meeting days in advance in the most efficient way, with up to three persons scheduled per meeting.

During the networking sessions, the collegial atmosphere presented the optimal fertile ground for developing new projects and winning new business partners. The evening events, the Welcome Cocktail and Partnering Event Night, stood for the celebration of the many years of good relationships within the IELA family and its industry partners with the marvelous backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge.

As a final highlight during the days of the event, the participants could choose between the Tour to the Moscone Center, only a 15 minute walk from the Hilton hotel, and the Golf Tournament, which took place in a quiet park outside of San Francisco.

Next year in Venice, we are looking forward to a new energizing Partnering Event close to the water's edge. We are looking forward to meeting YOU onsite – because every delegate matters! You shape THE HUMAN FACTOR of our exhibitions industry!

Testimonials

'First, it allowed me to meet people working in the same field from all around the world. The quality of the companies, as well as the organisations represented, was very high level. Meeting new people and sharing ideas in our field was very interesting. Spending two days with agents and freight forwarders in an informal way far from work was really great. Seeing people that you have only ever communicated with on the phone helped me to get to know them better. This experience helped me choose which companies I want to work with and those I have more confidence in. I’m very excited to participate in future IELA Partnering Events'.

‘This is my third IELA Partnering Event and once again, I had some very interesting meetings with partners from all around the world. Over the years, many of them have also become friends.

The event is a great opportunity to meet companies/partners from our industry and discuss business opportunities.

I hope that we become a full member soon and join the IELA family.

I would also like to thank the entire IELA Secretariat for organising such fantastic events and I am looking forward to the next meeting in Venice’. t

‘It was such a great opportunity for me to meet so many people who work in the same field.

I had a good time meeting new people, as well as having face-to-face meetings with many long-standing partners for the first time. I strongly reaffirm the significance of direct communication.

Seeing someone’s face makes me feel more comfortable communicating, and talking about more things besides work brings a sense of affinity.

I think that these feelings positively impact the business relationship for the future.

Also, I collected a lot of information regarding the import and export situations and trends of many countries.

Having this information and familiarising myself with the trade situations of each country definitely strengthens my sales ability in my country.

IELA meetings give me much knowledge and invaluable experience, so I’m very excited. I cannot wait to become an IELA member, and I am looking forward to joining the next meeting in Italy’. t

The ABC of the Winter Seminar

Under the motto, 'Building the future', from January 16th-20th, 2019, the 9th edition of the IELA Winter Seminar is being held in Zurich.

This event gives an exclusive insight for 40 IELA Member students focused on the procedures and complexities within the industry

The Winter Seminar enables your young professionals to meet and interact with their peers within networking sessions and learn from industry leaders in unique workshops.

The membership has recognised the value of this opportunity. As of September 20th, 35 participants have submitted applications. If your young staff has not registered yet, make sure they don’t miss the great international atmosphere generated from 21 countries and contact the Secretariat to ask for available seats.

The future of all companies depends on well-trained team members. International collaboration, mutual understanding, and specialised partners all over the world are crucial components of our network. This has been the focus of IELA's Winter Seminars since 1987.

As in the past, the classroom environment is friendly and fun, while the programme content is very intensive. The event motto, 'Building the future', is based on three pillars: 1. CONNECT, 2. LEARN, and 3. SUCCEED.

CONNECT

The connection is a crucial ingredient of the association’s success and all IELA’s events start with an informal welcome reception to make sure the network can begin smoothly. The official networking will begin on the next morning and keeps going during the whole event.

LEARN

The training team, composed by IELA renowned and highly experienced professionals, delivered a combination of lectures and group workshops, on essential topics.

SUCCEED

The success of the training is directly quantifiable seeing the high scores of IELA young promising minds during the final exam. The highest grade will be honoured with the ‘’Best Student Award’’ during the IELA Gala Dinner in Venice 2019.

When the students leave the Winter Seminar they are more open to the procedures and current situation in our industry. They will have a winner feeling of being well trained for future issues, on a new level of professionalism and benefit from new competences they can share not only with their colleagues but within the whole industry in upcoming networking connections.

IELA is looking forward to another fruitful educational event in 2019 t

IELA CONNECT, strengthening relationships for a safe & secure exhibition industry

We are pleased to announce our new flagship event IELA CONNECT . This new event concept, that will take place every October, has been created with one goal: Boosting local awareness in key regions worldwide. The goal of the event is to strengthen connections between industry stakeholders and this year it specially focuses on security and collaboration for a safer and more secure exhibition industry.

Since 2012, IELA has emphasised safety and security through multiple initiatives. These initiatives bring exhibition venues, show organisers, and service providers together to share best practices and establish standards of Occupational Health & Safety as well as Security for the entire industry.

The safety of exhibitors, visitors, and event staff is the highest priority of the exhibitions and events industry. Developing standards and sharing information through education and training programmes has become one of IELA’s passions.

On October 15th in Shanghai, IELA is proud to present the new IELA SECURITY GUIDELINES written by Dominique Geiser, Chair of the IELA Standards & Customs Working Group, in collaboration with Simon Garrett, Managing Director of X-Venture Global Risk Solutions, a leading security expert in the exhibition industry.

IELA Members, organisers, venues, and associations from the Asia-Pacific region are invited to join us to connect – collaborate –cooperate, for a safer and more secure exhibition industry.

IELA is committed to proactively strengthening safety & security standards. The IELA SECURITY GUIDELINES are essential for:

• Improving security awareness in the exhibition industry

• Contributing to venue security & exhibition safety

• Shouldering responsibility for the well-being of the industry workforce t

Greetings from the Asian Federation of Exhibition & Convention Associations!

As we all know, the modern-day exhibition industry confronts many safety and security issues, such as those involving workers’ safety, logistics safety, and safety and security of venue operations. Workers’ safety issues cover booth construction and decoration, moving-in and moving-out processes, and the safety management during the exhibition.

After years of development, the exhibition industries in the Asia-Pacific region and in the world have established a mature and advanced control and response system of safety and security. By planning and adapting risk management procedures, well-trained staffs can quickly respond to accidents and effectively mitigate losses from disasters. Effectiveness requires that all exhibition participants value the importance of safety and security measures. Accordingly, the industry needs to raise the awareness of safety and security controls to PEOs, stand contractors, and forwarders and firmly implement and enforce safety policies.

AFECA supports IELA’s initiative to strive for a safe & secure exhibition industry as both associations have the same goals: increasing awareness of safety and security management for all exhibition stakeholders. t

with a mission to promote and enhance the MICE industry in Asia. Today, AFECA has over 140 members, covering 19 nations/regions in Asia. For further information: https://afeca.asia/

The story behind the IELA SECURITY GUIDELINES

The topic of security is nothing new to the freight forwarding industry. Since at least 9 /11, security measures in the airline industry have tightened year after year. Unfortunately since that date, many big and small incidents have led to stricter security rules in our daily lives as well.

A discussion of the IELA SECURITY GUIDELINES started after Mr. Simon Garrett spoke on ‘Occupational Health & Safety in the Exhibition Industry’ during the 2016 IELA Forum in Dublin. After his presentation, the IELA Occupational Health & Safety guidelines (OH&S Guidelines) were launched and became part of the IELA training programme

During different events the IELA Board of Management and Secretariat were attending in the months after the Dublin Congress, it became clear that the OH&S Guidelines would not be sufficient for IELA to be a major, trusted player in the exhibition industry.

So the former Chairwoman Ms. Mariane Ewbank, approached the Standards & Customs Working Group with a request to establish security guidelines for IELA.

I started working on the IELA SECURITY GUIDELINES in March 2017. I began with a mind map on a white sheet of paper. Soon, one page was not enough and I extended my scribble onto several other pages. One thought lead to another and soon a whole new perception about the security risks in our exhibition industry became very clear.

The big task was to get the mind map into some easy-to-read document. Thanks to a native English Speaker (Jim Kelty), a proven Security Specialist (Simon Garrett), and the IELA Secretariat, the task given by the BOM was concluded after 18 months. The IELA Security Guidelines can finally be released on October 15 th, during IELA CONNECT and be made available to the Membership.

The guidelines should be looked as a guidance to the Membership. They should raise awareness of the various security threats involved in our daily work, whether on-site or in the office. Further, the guidelines should be used to proudly reinforce to our industry partners, clients, organisers, and other exhibition professionals that IELA Members are working according to our own IELA SECURITY GUIDELINES, which have set new standards in our industry. t

IELA SENIORS CLUB

May 4th-6th, 2018 Madrid Spain

Once again, 26 members of the Seniors Club reunited in May for a gathering of dear friends—many friendships spanning more than four decades. Demonstrating how lasting the friendships made through IELA are, the meeting included two of IELA’s founding members, Hans Brauchli and Jean-Paul Moser, four Honorary members, Hans Brauchli, Jean-Paul Moser, Thierry Demeure and Bob Moore (me) and, of course, Ruth Meister our former Secretariat and dear friend!

The get together kicked off at the Mercure Hotel where the group met up for an informal drink before the programme commenced. On Friday, we toured Madrid by bus and dined at a local Tavern. Saturday saw us visiting the original capital, Toledo. It was a great day highlighted by Jean-Paul making the excursion on crutches! The weather was superb and the company was full of the usual IELA spirit. Saturday evening, RESA EXPO Logistics hosted the group (many thanks to our good friend Pablo Martinez) at Samarkanda, an amazing restaurant in the former Atocha railway building. The food was superb as the wine was. The official wine expert Peter Widman was very happy! On the final morning, we met at breakfast to decide on the venue for 2019.

Last year, the Seniors Club was lucky enough to have the company of Cindy and Steve Barry. This year, our hearts were heavy with the news that Steve had passed away. During the time his celebration of life in America was taking place, we raised our glasses in remembrance of our dear friend, colleague, and founding member of IELA. Everyone’s thoughts were with Cindy and the family.

Many great chats and storytelling took place over the three days. The group was so proud to be part of the growth of IELA into the wonderful organisation it is today! It was interesting to hear how all are coping with retirement and how much the link with IELA still means to us. Sadly, many companies forget about their past employees so it feels so good that IELA remembers the pillars of the organisation. Firsttime attendees Kereth Moore and I enjoyed seeing old friends but wished we lived nearer to Europe to catch up more regularly!

MOU signing between IELA and SAACI

IELA strongly believes in the value of partnership. It has signed agreements with leading organisations worldwide to cooperate on information sharing and promotion. Most recently, IELA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SAACI, the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry. The MOU was signed by Ms. Mariane Ewbank, IELA Board Member and former IELA Chairwoman, and Mr. Rudi van der Vyver, CEO of SAACI, to codify the intention of both parties to exchange information for the benefit of members and cross-promote both associations.

The MOU is entered into a spirit of cooperation and collaboration as IELA seeks to play a pivotal role in the safety and security in the exhibition industry and is established as the key content provider for education and training programmes in the exhibition logistics industry. t

About SAACI

The Bridge project began more than a year ago. Please, allow us to thank the BOM Members and all of you for supporting this endeavor, giving us great ideas, and passing your concerns to us. Your feedback is important.

We have been making progress on our mission as a conduit between IELA members and the BOM

Many new ideas have reached us in San Francisco and we trust there are a lot more to come. Every suggestion will be passed to the corresponding Working Group, to the IELA Secretariat or to the BOM directly to be analysed, discussed and developed, if possible.

And, we are helping new members integrate into IELA and make it easier for them to get to know other members. We have even heard from some members that they have started to work together and interact with other members.

At the Partnering Event, we spoke to a number of non-members about the IELA ‘family’. We advised a few of them to contact the IELA Secretariat about the possibility of becoming members of IELA, and about the process and requirements.

While we are off to a good start, it is important to remember that every positive and/or negative comment or question is welcome. It’s what we are here for and what The Bridge needs.

The Bridge booth was a very special place to enjoy the first birthday of The Bridge with all of you and we hope to continue seeing you more and more every year. Remember to ask to all your company colleagues to contact us and maybe visit us on the following IELA Congresses

CEIR Announces 2018 First Quarter Index Results

The Center for Exhibition Industry Researc h (CEIR) reports in its 2018 First Quarter Index that growth of the exhibition industry continued. The performance of the industry, as measured by the CEIR Total Index, posted a decent year-over-year gain of 1.8%, even though it underperformed the macroeconomy (see Figure below).

All exhibition metrics in the first quarter posted positive year-overyear gains: Real revenues (nominal revenues adjusted for inflation) increased 2.8%, net square feet rose 2.0%, and attendees and exhibitors gained 1.8% and 0.7%, respectively.

'The first quarter of 2018 demonstrates that even in times when some sectors may be struggling, the total CEIR Index indicates the exhibitions industry is poised for steady growth, ' said CEIR CEO Cathy Breden, CMP, CAE.

Read the full CEIR report:

About CEIR

'The increase in the first quarter supports our prediction that the exhibition industry will finally enter into an expansion phase in 2018 with the Total Index surpassing its previous peak,' said CEIR Economist Allen Shaw, Ph.D., chief economist for Global Economic Consulting Associates, Inc.

CEIR serves to advance the growth, awareness and value of exhibitions and other face-to-face marketing events by producing and delivering knowledge-based research tools that enable stakeholder organisations to enhance their ability to meet current and emerging customer needs, improve their business performance and strengthen their competitive position. The Logistics Performance Index and Its Indicators

According to the 6th edition of the World Bank Group report, ‘Connecting to Compete,’ based on the results of the 2018 Logistics Performance Index (LPI), advanced economies remain the global leaders in trade logistics.

Regardless of the efforts many countries have made to modernise infrastructure and develop transportation and trade, high-income countries still score 48% higher on logistics performance than low-income countries. For example, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden have ranked the highest in LPI average scores over the past six years, followed by Belgium, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

The report outlines growing supply chain challenges, including qualified worker shortages, and an expanding environmental footprint:

1. A shrinking logistics labour force is a concern in both developing and developed countries. Managers are in high demand in developing nations, while developed countries face a shortage of frontline and blue-collar employees.

2. High-income countries are likely to be more prepared for cyber threats than low-income countries.

3. High-income countries are more likely to demand ‘green’ (a commitment to lower CO2 emissions) logistics services than low-income countries.

‘Logistics services are the backbone of international trade’, explains Caroline Freund, director of the Macroeconomics, Trade & Investment (MTI) Global Practice at the World Bank Group. ‘Good logistics reduce trade costs, but supply chains are only as strong as their weakest link. For developing countries, getting logistics right means improving their infrastructure, customs, skills, and regulations’.

‘With international trade becoming more dispersed through global value chains, good logistics are more important than ever. Small

disruptions to a supply chain can spread rapidly to other countries and regions ’, says Christina Wiederer, economist with the World Bank Group’s Macroeconomics, Trade & Investment Global Practice and report co-author. ‘Connecting to Compete and its Logistics Performance Index help governments understand the link between logistics, trade, and growth, and what policies are necessary for success’. t

About The Report:

Connecting to Compete is a bi-annual report. It contains the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) that scores 168 economies on how efficiently supply chains connect firms to domestic and international opportunities.

About the Logistics Performance Index (LPI):

It is a survey conducted by the World Bank Group, with the help of the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA), which analyses countries through six indicators:

The efficiency of customs and border management clearance

The quality of trade- and transport-related infrastructure

The ease of arranging competitively priced international shipments

The competence and quality of logistics services

The ability to track and trace consignments

The frequency with which shipments reach consignees within

scheduled or expected delivery time.

21st UFI Global Exhibition Barometer reports synchronised growth globally

The most recent UFI Global Exhibition Barometer shows positive global revenues through 2017, but less optimism for 2018:

• For the first time in the past ten years, all four global regions simultaneously reported a positive turnover.

• In terms of operating profit, most companies maintained a good level of performance in 2017, and more than 40% of companies from all regions declared an increase of more than 10% compared to 2016.

• However, the prospects for 2018 are currently lower globally.

According to the report, the top business issue for the industry remains the ‘state of the national/regional economy’ (listed by 24% of all respondents), ahead of ‘competition within the industry’ and ‘global economic developments’ (both listed by 18% of respondents).

After our 2018 IELA Congress on Digitization, we have a special interest in highlighting the section of the UFI Global Barometer focusing on the state of digital conversion in the industry:

• 64% of survey participants reported that they have added digital services/ products (like apps, digital advertising, digital signage) around existing exhibitions.

• 54% stated that they have changed internal processes and workflows to be more digital.

• 37% of the participating companies stated that they have developed a digital transformation strategy on a company level.

• 22% have created a designated function (like a Chief Digital Officer) in upper/top management.

• 14% of survey participants stated that they have launched digital products not directly related to existing exhibitions.

'We are pleased to see that the growth for 2018, anticipated six months ago, appears to be confirmed, and that this is the case in all regions of the world; at the same time, geopolitical uncertainty and specific industry shifts lead to cautious expectations in terms of profits. We also notice that a wide range of companies around the world are embracing the digitisation of our industry,' says Kai Hattendorf, UFI Managing Director / CEO.

The full results can be downloaded at www.ufi.org/research. The next UFI Global Barometer Survey will be conducted in December 2018. t

About the UFI Global Exhibition Barometer: The Global Barometer survey has been measuring the pulse of the exhibition industry since 2008. The 21st survey, conducted in June 2018, was answered by a record number of 312 companies from 55 countries. The results are detailed for 18 geographical zones, including 14 major markets.

About UFI: UFI is the leading global association of the world’s tradeshow organisers and exhibition centre operators, as well as the major national and international exhibition associations, and selected partners of the exhibition industry. UFI’s main goal is to represent, promote, and support the business interests of its members and the exhibition industry. UFI directly represents around 50,000 exhibition industry employees globally, and also works closely with its 58 national and regional association members. More than 700 member organisations in 85 countries around the world are presently signed up as members. Over 900 international trade fairs proudly bear the UFI approved label, a quality guarantee for visitors and exhibitors alike. UFI members continue to provide the international business community with a unique marketing medium aimed at developing outstanding face-to-face business opportunities.

AUMA 2017 Report on Leading Exhibition Organisers Worldwide

European companies dominated the rankings of exhibition revenues in 2017. The annual report issued in August 2018 by AUMA, the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry, ranked organisers, exhibition hall operators, and companies that work in both sectors.

Of the 34 exhibition companies with revenues of more than 100 million euros, eight were located in Germany and nine in the United Kingdom. Only four were based outside Europe: Emerald Expositions (USA), Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Tokyo Big Sight and SNIEC Shanghai.

British organisers Reed Exhibitions (1.264 million euros) and UBM (979 million euros) topped the list. Messe Frankfurt ranked third with sales of 669.1 million euros. Informa (UK), with sales of 631.1 million euros, climbed from eighth last year to fourth in this year’s rankings.

German companies posted revenue of 3.7 billion euros in 2017. The total is expected to rise in 2018 to between 3.8 to 3.9 billion euros because of an increase in the number of events and favourable economic conditions.

AEFI ECONOMIC OBSERVATORY ON THE TRADE FAIR SECTOR:

Q2 2018 registers positive trends for European exhibitors and turnover

On September 4 th , the Italian Exhibition & Trade Fair Association (AEFI) released the results of their 37th quarterly survey of trends in the Italian exhibitions industry for the period April to June 2018.

The report indicates favourable trends for exhibitors, visitors, and occupied surface area, according to the positive and negative results reported by the 27 associates.

The positive results—while modest compared to Q1 2018 and the same period last year—can

be attributed primarily to foreign participation, especially from the EU.

Compared to the same period last year, figures for the number of events are reported to be stable for 59.28% of the exhibition sectors participating in the analysis, with a slight downturn in the number of those reporting growth. The absence of changes highlights the stability of the system.

Although the figures are more modest, the number of exhibitors has grown, with a final result of +11%.

About AEFI

The Associazione Esposizioni e Fiere Italiane (AEFI), a private, non-profit association, was established in 1983 with the goal of generating synergies between the most important Italian exhibition sectors. AEFI would like to be seen as a privileged partner for operators and institutions alike, and its role is to support members through the development of activities and programmes in the sphere of training, marketing, promotion, and research, as well as to provide services for trade fairs through the activities of its committees.

The trend of turnover was particularly significant: growth for 37.02% of the sectors that took part in the survey, a downturn for 18.51%, and an overall positive balance of +19%. t

CHINA

FACTS & STATISTICS

Location: Asia

Capital: Beijing

Largest City: Shanghai

Time: Local time is GMT +8.

Population: 321.1 Million, of very mixed race and heritage

Electricity: Electrical current is 220 volts, 50Hz. Plug types vary but the two-pin flat blade and oblique three-pin flat blade plugs are common. Adapters are generally required.

Language: The official language is Mandarin Chinese, but there are hundreds of local dialects.

Currency: The Renminbi (RMB), China's legal currency, is issued and controlled solely by the People's Bank of China. RMB exchange rates are decided by the People's Bank of China and issued by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, the latter exercising the functions and powers of exchange control. The units of Renminbi are yuan, jiao and fen. The conversion among the three is: 1 yuan = 10 jiao =100 fen. Chinese people normally refer to Yuan as Kuai and Jiao as Mao. RMB is issued both in notes and coins. The denominations of paper notes include 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 yuan; 5, 2 and 1 jiao; and 5, 2 and 1 fen. The denominations of coins are 1 yuan; 5, 2 and 1 jiao; and 5, 2 and 1 fen. Although foreign currency cannot be circulated within the People's Republic of China or used to determine the price and settle accounts, it can be exchanged in China through traveler's cheques and currency conversion at banks and hotels. Besides, many credit cards can also be used in China.

PEOPLE's REPUBLIC OF CHINA

THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA (PRC)

China kept itself to itself for thousands of years, and foreigners still find it difficult to penetrate the inner depths of this fascinating and enigmatic country. There is a great deal to discover in this, the world's most populated country, with more than 1.3 billion citizens, and the third largest in the world territorially. What makes it attractive as a destination for Western tourists is its fascinating culture and valuable antiquities. Ruins and relics from Neolithic settlements and the dynastic reigns of the mighty emperors are there to behold, along with adventures along the legendary ancient trade routes, such as the Silk Road. The Forbidden Palace, Great Wall, and Xian's Terracotta Army, are just some of the incredible attractions to be seen in this ancient Eastern Empire.

The PRC has been under a communist government since 1949, but is currently undergoing social and economic development. Emphasis is being placed on tourist facilities and infrastructure. China is opening the doors to its wealth of historical and cultural treasures and visitors are flooding in to be amazed and awed. Organised tours are still the favoured way to explore China, but independent travel is slowly becoming easier. The major cities, like Beijing and Shanghai, are modern metropolises offering fast food and dazzling stores alongside centuries-old historical buildings and traditional eating houses. Archaeological wonders vie with amazing architecture in the interior, while majestic mountains and remote monasteries crown the northern areas.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Foreign citizens generally need a visa to visit China's mainland with the exception

E: chris.chan@asw-shenzhen.com.cn

W: www.airseaworldwide.com

of visa-free entry according to relevant agreements and regulations.

Americans: A passport and visa required for entry to China.

UK Nationals: A passport and visa required for entry to China. Passports endorsed ‘British National (Overseas)’ are not recognised and holders should carry a 'Returning Resident Permit' together with their Hong Kong ID.

Canadians: A passport and visa required for entry to China.

Australians: A passport and visa required for entry to China.

South Africans: A passport and visa required for entry to China.

New Zealanders: A passport and visa required for entry to China.

Irish Nationals: A passport and visa required for entry to China.

Passport/Visa Note: Visa not required if coming for a stay of six days only if arriving from Hong Kong or Macao in order to take a trip to Zhujiang Delta in Guangdong Province. Persons holding an APEC Business Travel Card do not require a visa, provided that it is valid for travel to China. Travel to Tibet will also require a special Tibet Entry Permit. All documents are necessary for further travel and sufficient funds to cover intended period of stay are required. Period of validity is stated on visas, and care should be taken when reading dates on visas for China as they are written in year/month/day format.

TRAVEL HEALTH

There have been confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Mainland China. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers coming from infected areas. There is a risk of Malaria throughout the low-lying areas of the country, and it is recommended that travellers to China seek medical advice before departure. A total of 18 human cases of Avian Influenza ('Bird Flu') have been reported from China since

62 IELA}}REPORT88

LTD.
BRANCH

November 2005. Twelve of the cases were fatal. Travelers are unlikely to be affected by Bird Flu, but live animal markets and places where contact with live poultry is possible should be avoided. All poultry and egg dishes should also be thoroughly cooked.

Outbreaks of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) are few and far between, although the last fatality was in 2008. Travelers are warned to remain vigilant against this viral disease. Japanese Encephalitis has been responsible for the deaths of a number of people in the Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces in northern China, and rabies infects people every year, occasionally causing death. Outbreaks of Dengue Fever occur.

A variant of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease, an intestinal virus, has also been prevalent in 2008, with children being at particular risk. Altitude Sickness can occur in the mountainous regions of Tibet, Qinghai, parts of Xinjiang, and western Sichuan. Outside city centres, visitors should only drink bottled water. Western-style medical centres with international staff are available in the major cities and usually accept credit cards. Health insurance is recommended.

TIPPING

Tipping is not officially recognised, although the practice is becoming more common among travel guides, high-end restaurants, tour bus drivers and hotel staff. Travellers wanting to tip should leave a gratuity of 10%. Large hotels and restaurants often include a service charge in their bills, usually of around 10%.

SAFETY INFORMATION

China is generally safe, and there has been no evidence of a threat from global

terrorism. Serious crime against foreigners is rare but does occur, particularly in isolated or sparsely populated areas. There has been an increase in the number of muggings and robberies at Beijing International Airport and the Jianguomenwai area of Beijing, as well as in Shenzhen, bordering Hong Kong. If travelling alone, including following parts of the Great Wall, it is advisable to leave an itinerary and expected time of return with a third party. Travellers should take extra care in street markets and at tourist sites, which attract thieves and pickpockets, and around the popular expat bar areas at night where lone foreigners have recently been attacked. Travellers should be cautious about using pedicabs in Beijing, as tourists have been mugged by the drivers; women in particular have been targeted.

Seasonal heavy rains and typhoons cause hundreds of deaths in China each year, particularly those areas bordering the Yangtze River in central, southern, and western China.

LOCAL CUSTOMS

The Chinese have three names, the first of which is their surname, or family name. As a result, visitors should be prepared for hotels mistakenly reserving rooms under their first names. For clarity, surnames may be underlined. When addressing Chinese people, the surname should come first and official titles should be used. Chinese handshakes last longer than those in western countries, and in conversation it is

customary to stand close together. Politeness in Western terms is foreign to them, and they rarely bother with pleasantries. All foreigners should carry ID at all times as spot checks are common and failure to show evidence in ID will result in a fine or detention.

BUSINESS

The Chinese are strict timekeepers and being late for a meeting is considered rude. When meeting people for the first time, it is normal to shake hands and say 'ni hao', which means 'how are you'. Business cards are exchanged at the start of meetings in China and it is customary to have one side printed in Chinese and one in English. When giving or receiving business cards, or a gift, it is customary to hold it with both hands. Chinese consider gifts as an important show of courtesy.

During a meal or reception, your host is likely to offer a toast; you may be expected to offer him one in return. Business hours are 8am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday. A five-day week is more normal in larger cities. Workers take their lunch break between 12pm and 2pm and it is not unusual to find offices empty during this time.

COMMUNICATIONS

The international access code for China is +86. The city code for Beijing is (0)10. International Direct Dialing is available in most cities. Phone cards are widely available and calls can be made from post offices and hotels; phone booths on the streets are usually for local calls only. In hotels, local calls are generally free or will be charged only a nominal fee. Mobile phone networks are very advanced. Operators use GSM 900 networks and have roaming agreements with most non-North American international operators. Internet cafes are available in most main towns. t

IELA: Our 2018 Congress was your second IELA Congress. What were the three main benefits you gained from participating in both events?

Niseth: The first IELA meeting was the perfect opportunity to get fully acquainted with the players in the industry. Coming from the exhibition centre side of the business, my network focused on organisers and venues and less on logistics. This changed after the IELA Congress. Although my head was spinning, trying to memorise all the information and great people I met, it was the best introduction I could wish for. Getting plenty of opportunities to meet, mingle, and talk business ensured that I learned who was who, which enabled me to reach out (and vice versa) afterwards.

During the second Congress, I had more time to participate in the forum and sessions. Learning about and discussing trends and developments in our industry is another great benefit from participating. As we work in an international environment, different modus operandi and regulations apply and IELA provides the platform to exchange best practices.

The third benefit to me is the connection, we are in a ‘people’ industry and what a great crowd we have at IELA! I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with wonderful people. Even when there is no direct work benefit or you are direct competitors throughout the year, when we are at the Congress, we all have a good time and none of that matters.

IELA: You have been an active IELA Forumparticipant joining THINK CAMPUS on Digital Natives, BREAKFAST BRAINS on GDPR, and STREAM TO ACTION on Automated Logistics. How was your experience with these new forum concepts and format?

Niseth: For me, learning about new developments in the industry should be an integral part of any Congress. Having it presented in interactive sessions makes a lot of sense. The different angles we all bring to the table during these sessions ensure the subject is discussed in more detail and taken further than it would be if it was just a PowerPoint presentation.

IELA: Which topic would you like to see covered in our next Congress forum?

Niseth: I would like to see Technology, Image, and Holding onto Talent as topics:

• Technology is important because there are many proven innovations from other industries that can also be applied to ours. Hence, there are new developments or future trends that are important to keep track of. For example, what role will robotification play in our industry in a couple of years?

• Image is critical, as I believe there is a discrepancy between the essential role logistics plays in the exhibition industry and how other industry players perceive our services. The comparison with the house elves from Harry Potter, mentioned last year by Rowena Arzt, WTZ ‘s director of exhibitions, springs to mind. The question is how can we position ourselves as the logistic consultants we are?

• Finding and holding on to talented employees is key for the future. The big question is how to do this in today’s marketplace. Not being able to fill the positions to sustain our businesses is a huge threat.

Every IELA member experiences our Congress in his or her own personal way. We have tried to find out how our members experienced the new event format in San Francisco. Here are two different perspectives. Our San Francisco event was Niseth Boerrigter’s second IELA Congress and Roland Kreitmayr’s 7th Congress. Both shared their feedback with us!

Sharing experiences

IELA: You have been with IELA since 2012 and our 2018 Congress was your 7th participation at an IELA event. How have you seen the evolution of the association?

Roland: My first time attending the IELA Congress was 2012 in Barcelona. This was a special one, due to the fact that Barcelona was also the 1st IELA Partnering Event.

It’s great to see the development of both— the Congress, as well as the Partnering Event. I have witnessed an increase in the number of participants and in the amount of information and ideas I take home every year.

IELA: How was your experience with this year’s new forum concept and format? What feedback did you receive from your team members?

Roland: The new forum concept contributed greatly to my personal experience. In my opinion, it is a unique way to approach such congresses, which usually tend to be more theoretical and static

The concept aimed for more interaction. It really did work out and the better communication led to more feedback on many topics.

IELA: Which topic would you like to see covered in our next Congress forums?

Roland: The most interesting topics for me are industry-wide approaches to innovation and technology. In my opinion, there is always room for innovation!

Obviously, those topics have always been prominent, but I would love to keep this focus up in the future as t

GDPR for marketing & sales

The Complete List of How to Generate NEW SALES in a GDPR-compliant world?

PART 1

The Complete List of How to Generate NEW SALES in a GDPR-compliant world?

PART 1

We know it so well. With no other better marketing instrument is it possible to build up personal relationships with customers, industry partners, organisers, and the media as at trade shows. The acquisition of new clients is one of the most important goals.

But how did our world change after the GDPR implementation on May 25th? You may approach the customer at the booth, have a quick chat and if they are interested you exchange each other’s business cards. The handing over of a business card or the handwritten note of contact details alone does not constitute any processing of personal data within the meaning of GDPR, so the data protection law doesn’t apply here so far.

Back in the office, however, you will probably save the details from the card in your database.

LEADS PROSPECTS

Trade Shows - potential customers everywhere, but how to acquire them while being in compliance with GDPR?

Saving this details means processing data. Follow these five tips and you will be prepared for the challenges of saving & processing data:

• Verbal permission is hard to prove – Make sure you have structured documentation and keep records of your leads to substantiate proper data processing.

• Follow up after the visit by sending your prospect an opt-in e-mail that gives you written permission to send him information.

• Processing personal data is required to fill out/prepare a contract requested by a prospect.

• Make sure you have the prospect’s permission to send a commercial e-mail

before sending him your company newsletter, etc.

• Give your contacts the chance to unsubscribe anytime by adding an ‘OptOut’ button to your e-mails.

In conclusion, the best way to save your prospects’ details in a legal way, is to send them a well prepared e-mail detailing your plans to include their contact information in your data base. Also send your company’s privacy policy and ask them for commercial e-mail permission.

Add an `I AGREE’ button and their permission will be just one click away.

This procedure will save you a lot of trouble and help you to develop a good basis for a successful working relationship. t

Embracing Diversity

I was pleased to facilitate a Think Campus session at the recent IELA meeting in San Francisco on the topic of diversity and why it is essential for workplace success. In preparing for the session, I wanted to be sure I provided the right context for just what diversity means: The full range of differences (and similarities) that make each individual unique, some of which are visible and invisible.

Diversity includes how people relate to one another, how one works, how one connects and relates to society, how one processes information, how one views themselves and others, and the values an individual brings with them. This perspective and context was enlightening for those participating in the discussion; many believed that diversity is just about color, race, religion, etc.

Inclusion in the workplace, on the other hand, is recognising and fully valuing and leveraging the diversity of others, and celebrating and utilising people’s differences to the benefit of the organisation. Diversity and inclusion bring together people with different skills, competencies, and viewpoints. In this transformative period of time, it is

critical to have people on staff who think differently and, more importantly, respect the differences and values individuals bring with them to the workplace.

Understanding what diversity means and the importance of inclusion set the stage for the discussion. Some key takeaways:

• The current workforce is aging and many companies have a lot of institutional knowledge. Who will carry that knowledge on?

- Young people think, act, and work differently. Hire students graduating from university and learn from them. Ask them for their ideas.

- Oftentimes, bringing individuals in from outside the industry will provide new ideas for conducting business and identifying opportunities.

Work with young people who join the company and find out what they want to become. Help them achieve their goals through mentorship.

W: www.iaee.com

W: www.ceir.org

- Focus on promoting individuals based on competency rather than longevity.

• Identifying strategies for innovation:

- First thing to do is ask for ideas. Give permission and respect to those who do provide ideas.

- Executive teams often work effectively. Build teams with lower levels, titles and tenure; let them brainstorm innovative ideas. Assign responsibility to the teams for innovation.

- It was noted that in some cultures, it is difficult for individuals to speak up and voice their ideas, even when given permission to do so.

The conversation was lively with input from most of the participants. My hope for those who attended was to take away one or two ideas to implement at their companies. t

Dear Members,

It has been my honour and pleasure to take over the role as Chairman of the Education & Training Working Group this year!

I want to express my gratitude to the IELA board and especially to Vicki Bedi as Chairman of IELA.

It´s through his encouragement that I take charge of this important Working Group with the strong belief that we, as the Working Group team, can help IELA to move forward.

While I am happy to introduce myself, I am also proud to announce Bas Wiendels as the Vice Chairman who, like me, is pleased to contribute his experience to this part of IELA and generate great team spirit within the Working Group.

I would also like to extend a big THANK YOU to all team members. I am happy to lead such a great group!

Our first job was to wrap up current topics and ensure the continuity you are expecting.

While we begin discussing actual and new projects, we have to accept that some members have decided not to continue their participation in the group. This is the normal evolution of a team. From the current group and on behalf of all IELA members, I want to express a very BIG THANK YOU for being so passionate. You will always be welcome to join the group again!

We are happy to announce that new members are joining us. It will be a pleasure working with you!

Currently, we are finalising the organisation of Winter Seminar together with the Secretariat and all the other supporters. The coming Winter Seminar will follow the tradition as a historical and important educational tool of IELA. Our next step will be to develop webinars , new ideas, and projects, especially the IELA Academy, for 2019.

I´ve always known this group is dynamic and progressive. But there’s no time to rest in this fast- changing environment. We have never seen such a big change in the political environment, economy, and our social lives before. We can´t escape it and we need to follow or adapt. However, I personally prefer to create rather than to adapt so I am proud to be part of this group and able to help design the future of our business.

While we are analysing and discussing heavily the different attributes of Gen X and Y, and having Gen Z on the horizon, we have to look also at the generation that represents the biggest part of our companies, i.e. the ones with expertise and experience. Won’t they need to be taught new technologies, new customs regulations, and changes as well? We tend to think this group is well settled, but that’s not necessarily true. We will make sure to consider them in our content as well.

Your feedback and your input are crucial for our work and results, so please contact us for any kind of ideas!

Vincenzo Scrudato t

Looking forward to interacting with you all!

Dear Fellow IELA Members,

I hope all of you had a nice summer and are ready for the busy season of tradeshows and holiday meals! It was so great to see all of you in San Francisco last June. It was a very exciting and revolutionary conference. I am so excited to see what comes next from our members’ great ideas and thoughtful insights.

The “Think Tank” WG was inspired by the “Streams” and “Breakfast Brains” sessions, which formed the basis of many of our discussions. During this past conference, we added some great new team members who brought some ingenious ideas to the group. It should definitely be an exciting year ahead.

This year, the “Think Tank” WG has taken a different approach to developing projects and ideas. We have decided not to pursue the Vendor Showcase but rather shift our focus to the innovation and resources within the IELA organization.

Projects Planned for 2018-2019 Organiser/Exhibitor Portal (In progress, 2017-2018)

• The portal is on track to go live at the end of the year. The IELA Secretariat and Mariane are working alongside our group to finalize the content and layout of the pages.

IELA Incubator/Start-Up (Proposed project, 2018-2019)

• This project is expected to give IELA a place to house all of our ideas and innovations as well as implementing them with funding. Having a formal start-up will legitimize what has come out of either the

“Streams” session or our members‘ ideas.

A few proposed ideas to be housed under the new IELA Incubator/Start-Up include the following:

• Portable 3D Laser measurer

• Real-time tracking with RFID chips

• Fully Automated show floors

• Sending IELA Members to local logistics and tech shows for gathering diverse information and insight.

Instant Messaging for IELA Members

• An official, efficient way to communicate with IELA Members all over the world instead of WhatsApp (will be accessible with different devices).

IELA Exchange

• An “Exchange” programme where IELA members can exchange employees with other members for specific projects and/ or time.

We still need to figure out the legal liabilities of this programme and will be sending out a survey to assess the need/interest amongst the members for such a program.

We aim to accomplish at least two projects this year! This number will increase as we further develop and grow our group. IELA members’ comments and ideas are always welcome and encouraged! So please do feel free to email me.

Also it’s never too late to join the awesome, super cool, and innovative “Think Tank” Working Group as we are always looking

for new team members who are excited to be innovative and ‘Think outside the Tank’.

Till the next IELA Report in 2019, I wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!! May 2019 be the best year yet for you all, your companies, and families!

Thank you so much for all your support and see you all in Venice!

Cheers to our Continued Success, Tania Khodayar t

Dear IELA Members,

This has been perhaps my most difficult article to write, as I have now stood down as Chair of the group. Nevertheless, I have been asked to write a short article to bring my tenure as Chairman to a close and to pass on the baton to Sandi Trotter and Lena Widman.

My own journey started when Ravinder Sethi asked me to become VC of the Membership Working Group. Ravinder then kindly stepped aside and asked me to take over as Chair. I must say that the last two years have been extremely enjoyable, if not somewhat challenging, in a number of ways. However, in the end, each and every member of the MWG has IELA at heart. This realisation ensures that the focus of IELA is quality and anyone who applies to join IELA must not only satisfy the initial criteria for applying, but also get past the 'dragon's teeth' of the MWG. This, in itself, is no easy task.

I must extend a big thank you to all of those who participated in the MWG during my time as Chairperson, and it’s with pleasure that I now hand over the reins of the group to two people who have many years’ experience in the industry and will apply the same standards to every application that comes to the MWG over the coming year.

It has also been my pleasure to head up the task force challenged to look into every

aspect of the membership process. This group consisted of Ravinder Sethi, Achim Lotzwick, Vicki Bedi, Lena Widman, and, of course, myself. The work has involved countless emails, and a number of meetings and plenty of debate, but I believe we sought to move the whole application process forward.

The process of the task force has been ongoing and we have had to contend with the GDPR, which has taken peoples’ time and effort.

So, it gives me great pleasure, with a tinge of sadness, to hand you over to two very capable ladies and I am sure that their ‘no nonsense approach’ will serve IELA well. So Lena, I now hand the baton over to you to make your introduction…

Thank you Jeff! It has been great to have you as the Chair of this group, and you will be missed. We are glad to know that you will continue your hard work for IELA now as a member of the board.

Sandi and I will now carry on the important work for this group and with the ambitious members that we have in our team, we look forward to it a lot.

Thank you Jeff for all the work and effort that you brought to this group!

WORKING GROUP

Dear Friends,

Already, three months have passed since our last gathering in San Francisco. We had a very lively Working Group session with a few less people in attendance than 2017 in Prague, but the output was great!

First of all, we are announcing that the IELA SECURITY GUIDELINES will be launched very soon (October 2018). After 18 months of work on these guidelines and fine-tuning this important document, it will be one of many great IELA achievements of the last half-decade. It will also be a step toward IELA’s goal of becoming one of the main associations in the global exhibition industry.

The 2017 survey was, of course, also one of the topics during our meeting and the WG presentation. The outcome of the survey was very positive once again. The average scores of the Domestic Agent survey and the Export Agent survey were again a little higher than for the previous surveys in 2016. IELA scored the highest number of surveys ever—882 Domestic Agents and a tremendous 1.054 Export Agents responded.

For the 2018 Survey, we decided to add a couple of questions related to the on-site performance of the Domestic Agent if the company is an on-site agent as well. The survey system will be updated until we go live with the 2018 survey. The membership will be informed about the changes before the start of the survey. This change will also lead to a new, third category for the IELA Awards, which are

presented every year during the IELA Congress. At the 2019 Congress, we will, for the first time in IELA history, announce the best On-Site Agents!!!

The third important topic we discussed during our meeting was the unfortunate situation we face every day with airfreight shipments. Even though there are IATA and ICAO rules in place, every airline and every airport makes its own decisions about what kind of freight (especially dangerous goods, batteries, and licensable cargo) they will permit onboard. This flexibility makes our daily business extremely difficult and unpredictable.

We have decided that out of the Standards & Customs WG, we will launch an “Industry Relations” task force, which will take on this problem with the airline industry and talk to decision-makers at airlines, associations, airports etc. to bring forward our problems and difficulties. If we can raise awareness about how this situation impacts trade show freight, it would be another great achievement for IELA and help the membership.

If you are interested in joining this task force and if you have a special relationship with the airline industry , please step forward and get in touch with me or the IELA Secretariat.

Thanks for reading my report. A special thanks to all the members of the Working Group for being active members, bringing new ideas forward, and keeping our group moving forward.

Dear Friends,

First of all, I would like to thank Guido for all his professional work on behalf of the Working Group Industry Relations.

I'm really looking forward to challenging tasks and good outcomes within this group, especially to working with the members and, of course, with Jacqui, who has a lot of experience from previous years. And due to Guido’s commitment that he will assist us with the same passion he continues to have for this group, I’m really excited about the future.

From my experience, I know how important it is to work closely with the industry. I saw this several times during annual meetings for AUMA, which is the most important association for the exhibition industry in Germany.

This year, our participation at the UFI Congress in St. Petersburg at the end of October, is part of our programme.

We’ll try to use this opportunity to forge closer relationships with our most important partners – the worldwide venue owners and organisers.

In addition, our Working Group has been working on the promotion of our new flagship event, IELA CONNECT , which takes place in Shanghai on October 15 th this year.

IELA CONNECT was created with one goal: Boosting local awareness in key regions worldwide. In 2018, Asia Pacific is the focus of our efforts. If you are based in Asia, do not hesitate to attend the event. It is going to be a great “add-on” to IELA’s 2018 networking platforms.

A personal thank you goes to Ravinder Sethi and Niseth Boerrigter who have been diligently helping us to promote the event.

Best regards, Roland Kreitmayr t
