Driving Growth - Boosting Action

Dear IELA Member,

Impeccable and Fun! That is the correct definition for our 32nd IELA Congress & 6th IELA Partnering Event. The beauty of Prague and the great work of our Secretary provided the perfect environment for our intense networking and the important discussions during the congress, where we had representatives from the entire events chain on our stage.

During the event we also had the presentations of the Working Groups in which ideas were proposed and pretty soon you will see that some of the ideas will come to life.

The membership also elected members to the Committee and the Board of Management. First of all, I would like to congratulate Markus Eichenberger (BTG Suisse) for being re-elected. Furthermore, I compliment Vincenzo Scrudato (DHL Germany) on being elected for the Committee and Emmanuel Pitchelu (ESI France) for the Board. In addition, we congratulate Jim Kelty (Airways USA) and Ravinder Sethi (R.E. Rogers India) for being re-elected.

I also would like to thank those that voted for me and thus made my re-election as Chairwoman of IELA possible. My devotion and dedication to IELA is even greater. I deeply appreciate your trust.

As it happens after every election, we chose the Vice-Chairman and the Treasurer during the Board Meeting post-Congress. Jim Kelty is chosen as the new Vice-Chairman and Christoph Rauch as the new Treasurer.

I think it is important to encourage Jeff Broom (Europa Showfreight, UK), Rene Carvajal (NAIB Group, Mexico) and Ulrich Manten (Schenker, Germany) who were also candidates for the Board. Please do not give up on standing for election again and continue to be actively engaged in our association. Being a Board Member is not the only way of working for IELA. Giving ideas, sharing opinions, becoming a Working Group member are some of the ways to contribute to our Association

The year 2017 has not even ended yet, but I can already announce a year of achievements for IELA with the Winter Seminar, Webinars, Working Group’s changes and recognition of other associations from our industry. Additionally, we have concluded the ITM – IELA Training Manual For many years ITM was a distant dream until the day Jim Kelty (Airways, USA) accepted the big challenge to produce this important tool that we can use for training our teams.

Until 2018 our Board Members, including me, will be very busy offering more benefits to our members and making IELA stronger and more solid as an association that prioritizes QUALITY and not quantity.

You can find out more about some of these tasks in the following pages.

Now a message to all members: we are all part of IELA. Each of us can participate and contribute. To illustrate this message, I will use the conversation I had with Rene Carvajal (NAIB, Mexico) and David Palomo (Suomen, Finland) during the Day Out in Prague – (when the team, I was part of, won the Dragon Boat Race). We talked about what we could do to make the new members more familiar with IELA and also how to let them and old members feel closer to the Board. Members cannot think or feel that there is a distance. The Board of Management is composed of ten members – normal people that dedicate time and money to work for IELA.

Inspired by this talk we created a task force called “The Bridge between Membership & BOM” Rene and David will be “go to persons” for the new members during the Congress and Partnering Event. Vicki Bedi (PSBedi, India), the Secretariat and me are working together with Rene and David to plan actions that will let all members feel as part of the IELA family.

As I already said, there is no shortage of good ideas, energy, and willingness to bring you, member, more benefits and make you prouder to be part of IELA.

HEIKKI MATTOLA OF CHS: LOGISTICS EXPERTISE IN FOUR DIFFERENT OLYMPIC GAMES

Salt Lake City 2002, Vancouver 2010, R io de Janeir o 2016 and PyeongChang 2018 – CHS’ Director for Event logistics, Mr Heikki Matt ola, has a long track record in the Olympic Games and other sports events, as well as logistics connected with them. Two of the above events were Winter Games like PyeongChang. Rio, on the other hand, was the scene of the latest Summer Olympics.

CH S Group an d t he Finnish O lympic C ommittee

As the official logistics partner of the Finnish Olympic Committee and the Finnish Olympic Team, CHS makes sure that the Olympic Committee and all athletes can concentrate their energy in promoting athletic issues and be sure that their freight will arrive punctually and safely at the destination of any sports event.

CH S’ Heik ki Mat tola is an expert in spor ts logist ic s

Sports logistics is a unique form of event logistics. At the moment, the joint journey of CHS and the Finnish Olympic Team is well under way towards Korea and the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang in February 2018. The journey actually began in September last year almost right after the return back home from the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics.

The seamless trip of the Olympic Team of almost 200 people to the Olympic scenes is every time a project involving the work of hundreds of professionals. As the official logistics partner of the Finnish Olympic Team, CHS Expo Freight takes care of the punctual and safe arrival of the Team’s equipment.

“We will make sure that the equipment is ready for loading in time and all the necessary documents in order. The packings must tolerate the conditions of sea transport and everything must be correctly marked. We will ensure relevant insurance coverage and check in advance the regulations and formalities of the receiving country. Co-operation with the customer is important, for one cannot overemphasize the importance of information and guidelines from the customer”, Heikki Mattola explains.

Things happen during the journey

In the Summer Olympics in Rio, everything went surprisingly smoothly according to Heikki Mattola.

“Prior to the event we were expecting more challenges with the Brazilian customs processes than we actually faced in practice. One of the most memorable pieces of equipment we transported to Rio was the Finnish paralympic sailor Niko Salomaa’s boat. Its trip to the competitive scene in Brazil and back to Finland again went through several ports”, Heikki describes.

In addition to the equipment needed in the competitive events, different kinds of goods, Finnish foodstuffs, and other products were transported to Rio. These included, for instance, garden furniture used to create an atmosphere resembling home in the Olympic Village. Finnish bicycles were used in the Village for moving around.

From the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Heikki Mattola remembers the strict regulations of the state of Utah. For return transport, the Finnish Olympic Committee had its own charter flight, on which Heikki had booked the entire freight space.

“In this way, we were able to secure the loading of all the Finnish Olympic Committee’s equipment in full and before anything else in the fully-booked plane”, Heikki remembers.

In the Vancouver Olympics, CHS had to sort out

dangerous goods (e.g. hairsprays and other cosmetics products), which had not been declared in advance, but had been placed among other equipment. These undeclared products unfortunately had to be left out of the transportation.

PyeongChang 2018 is in the middle of the wi nter sports season

The road from Finland to PyeongChang is over 7 000 kilometres long. In addition to the Finnish Olympic Team of over 200 people, a huge amount of the Team’s equipment, such as ski waxes and massage tables, is travelling to the Olympic city. This time the Olympic project is really demanding, for it is in the middle of the hectic winter sports season. For instance, the world cup in both cross-country and alpine skiing is under way, which means that the athletes will continue in the cup right after the Olympics. The equipment has to travel punctually again to the next competitive event.

The functioning and reliability of logistics play again key parts in the Winter Olympics in Korea next February. Special attention must be paid to organising all transportation. Thorough advance planning is crucial in its success.

“Our co-operation with the Finnish Olympic Committee has begun well in advance. Finnair has direct flights from Finland to Korea. CHS and Finnair have together made arrangements for air freight to Korea and back again to secure successful logistics. I am looking forward to the coming Winter Olympics as our work progresses”, Heikki concludes. t

DH L Tr ade Fairs & Events has been official onsite logistics partner of Messe Frankfurt for decades. Regardless of the long and reliable relationship, logistical and technological processes are far from unchanging but based on cutting-edge technology and subject to continuous innovation. One of the newest innovative features has been introduced to the Cargo Center – the venue’s central logistics hub, where DHL dimensions and registers all incoming and outgoing shipments. The state-of-the-art volume measurement solution is based on 3D camera technology and an industry leading project. The solution has been specially adapted for the usage at the fair venue and is designed to benefit logistics provider, venue organiser and exhibitors mutually.

CARGOLIVE'S NEW WAREHOUSE

Choosing the right partner to support the logistics requirements for any event makes the difference when it comes to exceeding exhibitors expectations.

We are more than proud to help our partners at IELA differentiate themselves and to assure a smooth and timely delivery.

In this regard, we would like to apprise you of the fact we now count with our own 350.00 M2 warehouse located meters away from MEX airport.

Car goLive' s warehouse is equipped with 2 own forklifts, with 2.50 and 7.00 Tn lifting capacity.

These acquisitions will add value to all our operations in terms of safety, timing and cost.

We look forward to working together with you in your next logistics challenges. t

"Prior to the implementation of the new technology all shipments had to be measured manually. Our new digital dimensioning solution significantly improves precision and enables up to six times faster handling of all shipments," states Vincenzo Scrudato, Managing Director, DHL Trade Fairs & Events.

Thanks to the new digital solution this process now runs almost automatically. For instance, following the dismantling process at the end of a fair, all freight pieces are ready to ship within less than 24 hours - A tremendous improvement for an industry in which time is a crucial factor. Errors in volume dimensioning become almost impossible. Consequently, trade fair customers receive better quality as well as faster and more efficient services due to DHL Trade Fairs & Events.

"We as Messe Frankfurt are the very first fair venue in Germany having this innovative solution in place. DHL's innovative capacities, which we were able to experience firsthand during our workshops, are a perfect match to our digitization strategy. We are looking forward to continuing our good cooperation and innovative journey together with DHL Trade Fairs & Events," states O liver Schell, Division Manager Logistics, Messe Frankfurt GmbH. Messe Frankfurt surely walks the talk and has just recently rewarded DHL with an early contract extension. t

VALERIO DE TONI NEW GENERAL FAIR MANAGER AT DSV SPA

As already told advised by my colleagues during the meeting in Prague Mr Roberto Pasini, is retired since 30th June 2017.

I have been appointed as the new General Fair Manager and I'm very proud of it.

My name is Va lerio De Toni and I've been working for Saima, now DSV, for about 25 years in executive career.

In the DSV Italy network I am the General Manager of Road Division since 10 years and now I will be the new General Fair Manager, too.

As above stated I am very proud to have obtained this new achievement. I believe in the product " fair logistics " that only few forwarding agents can offer to their customers.

I think that fair logistics is not a niche product but could be the stepping stone to gain new customers for our products and improve customer loyalty.

Thank

Have you ever dr eamt of the golden book for exhibition logistics? A book which compiles all the knowledge that freight forwarders specialised in trade show logistics need to know to perform their jobs according to the best standards of performance!

IELA’s founding members had that dream and we are proud to have brought it to life this year. After many years of cooperative efforts of members of IELA and their experienced staff, all IELA members received a copy of the IE LA TRAINING MANUAL (ITM) during our past Congress in Prague.

IELA’s Training Manual is intended to be an extensive overview of the many operations activities within the int ern ation al for war ding ,

customs clearance and show sit e handling duties unique to the exhibition and event industr ies. The focus of the ITM is on the interests and needs of new-to-the-industry staff or those with up to three years experience in our business.

The ITM integrates the concepts and provisions of the I EL A St an dar ds of Perf orma nce into the respective sections of the manual. It addresses all operations from the viewpoint of b oth th e exp ort agen t a nd t he on s ite f reigh t han dling contract or. While both functions can be similar in their operating structure in many respects, there are also marked differences in the way each side completes their work. The manual should high ligh t how work ing coop era tively and kn owing eac h ot her ’s j obs will result in more efficient and cost-effective results.

The ITM covers the basic forwarding principles and inst r uct ions for t he intern ational exhibit ion ind ustr y that can be used in conjunction with local and/or corporate freight requirements.

This manual will be updated and amended periodically as shipping and handling procedures are constantly changing.

Concerning the most recent rules, regulations and procedures in our industry for specific geographic areas, we recommend that you contact an IELA member familiar with that region.

As part of their membership, every IELA member gets a copy of the ITM. Additional copies are available for a small amount and the IELA

website also offers a digital version of the manual, available in the memberzone only.

IELA sincerely wants to thank those members who contributed to the development of this initial Training Manual:

Annual Seniors Club Meeting in Bordeaux

As always the time is too short to be with friends that span more than four decades. Even though time has taken some of our beloved founding members we were very happy to have four of them together, Hans Brauchli, Jean-Paul Moser, Steve Barry and Waltraud Rauch (the wife of Klaus). We had a wonderful time together, some of us had not seen each other in years. We went on walking tours, toured wineries and had two fantastic dinners together.

Thierry Demeure put together a wonderful two and a half days for us. After all it's not what you do, it's just spending time amongst friends that mean so much.

One of the things we discussed was IELA and what a strong and amazing association it has become. When we look at the growth and success it has achieved it boggles the mind. It is hard to believe that a small group of men with an idea of making the international business environment better, could create a bond of friends that would last decades. After all doing business with a friend builds relationships.

We are very appreciative of the companies that fund our IELA Seniors. Without your generosity, it would not be possible. It is nice to know we are still part of the IELA family. t Cindy Barry, Wife of founding member Steve Barry

“Safety and security continues to be a top priority for the global exhibitions and events industry. Everyone should continuously review your protocols and practices in order to ensure that you have the best and most up to date enhancements in order to ensure mitigation against crimes and terrorism. Credentialing and material handling safety and security systems and protocols must be the emphasis of your efforts to keep employees, exhibitors, attendees and all participants safe.” t

I ELA FO RU M 201 7: SERV IC E

IELA’s 4t h For um focus ed on CU ST OMER SERV ICE invited key industry players to our Congress in Prague.

It is a commitment to bring new approaches to brainstorm together about relevant questions for our industry.

And we hope you all found answers and guidelines to power your business! t

“The importance of service in the exhibitions and events industry is paramount. Through all our business activities, we are providing services to businesses who exhibit, to buyers and visitors who attend the show, andlast not least - to local and regional communities and society as a whole by fostering trade, exchange of knowledge, and many other things.

Today, five megatrends are influencing the service industries:

1) Increasing speed and power shift towards the customers

So service thinking should be a core element of corporate cultures and all business activities. At UFI, for instance, we understand ourselves as ’the service providers to our global service industry’.

Recent UFI data shows, for example, that organisers are adapting their corporate cultures to act more customer centric. And many of the drivers for venues investing into their infrastructure are designed to accommodate changing customer needs, most notably towards the use of digital technology.

Ultimately, the exhibitions and events industry is about face to face - so the quality and delivery of services will be a decisive factor for success. It has been so in the past and might be even more so in a more digital future.” t

2) Individualisation and customisation

3) Sustainability

4) Security and safety

5) Digitalisation and networks

Exhibitions logistics has to find its place in this field of forces by combining and using them in the best possible way. These 5 trends will open up new opportunities. However, it will be important for companies to understand the ongoing changes and to adapt to this new business environment. We are on the threshold to a new age. For a prosperous future it will be important to take the next step. Companies need to become faster, more flexible, more responsible, more vigilant and more connected to have their place in the future business setting.

Awards

Annual Standards of Performance Survey

IELA’s annual Standards of Performance Survey is the benchmarking tool for all IELA members to evaluate their peers’ performance. It provides valuable crossed information about Domestic and Export agents within our worldwide network.

IELA members exceed in delivering the best services to the exhibition industry and our survey outlines the Top 3 performers of both categories: Best Domestic Agent and Best Export Agent.

“Our congratulations to all 2016 BEST AGENT Winners! The IELA Awards truly showcase those companies and individuals that are driving excellence, improving standards within the Industry", said Mariane Ewbank, IELA's Chairwoman

Best Export Agent 2016: Interflow Logistics Ltd., Ireland

} How did you get involved with the industry?

I was managing a courier company in Killarney. One day a local PCO friend of mine asked if I knew anything about freight. She needed assistance with some shipments for a medical show. Not really thinking about it, I equipped myself with a sack truck ready for action until a 40' trailer of stand fittings turned the corner. The rest is history. A couple of years later I met the experts Achim Lotzwick, Cretschmar and Jim Kelty of Airways Freight and they introduced me to IELA.

} Why do you think your company has been elected by your counterparts as the Best Export Agent? Hopefully because we provide a great service. It was nice for the company to get the recognition. It can be hard to stand out in this business, there are many other good agents in IELA.

} What do you think IELA has done for you?

IELA has certainly put Interflow on the map within the global events industry. We have met some incredibly hard working agents and developed great friendships. Thanks to the continued support of IELA, we have been able to take advantage of educational programmes on offer. The winter seminar and operations summit have been a good resource for the Interflow team. I also see a lot of good work being done by the working groups.

Best Domestic Agent 2016: ELF Shipping LLC, UAE

} How did you get involved with the industry?

We have been in the industry for over two decades though not employed with the current company but actively involved in the day to day handling of exhibitions mostly as Domestic agents. The question is how did we get involved with this industry? Well the reasons have been different depending on the people within the existing team. Some got involved by accident since they started their job in an exclusive exhibitions handling company whereas some started their careers in a general freight forwarding company and over a period of time increased the diversity-to-exhibitions.

} Why do you think your company has been elected by your counterparts as the Best Domestic Agent?

We have been elected by our peers in this industry as the Best Domestic Agent for the simple fact that they got value for their money. They also received satisfactory reports from their customers who entrusted the jobs to our partners and us from origin up to the exhibition booth and vice versa. The service levels were maintained and this includes from the day the enquiry comes in, to the pre-alert we receive for the shipment, to customs clearance and delivery to the booth and then re-export of the shipments back to the origin. It does not end here. The most important part is the billing of the charges and you have to ensure that you are billing what you have stated with no discrepancy or hidden charges, without disputes.

} What do you think IELA has done for you?

IELA has broadened our horizons. We get to meet people from the same industry under one roof. This gives us an opportunity to network and have fun with our partners and competitors alike. Over the years it has helped us to develop the relationships that we have had with our partners and meet new people

Making our award “Domestic Agent 2 nd Place2016” more remarkable and appreciative, is the fact that LA Rouxnelle Logistics and Consulting is for the second year under the top three companies after our 3rd place in the same category in 2015. Thank you for making Prague the biggest networking event of our industry

The IELA Partnering Event is a business meeting platform we created seven years ago to be added as a complement element to our annual congress. Enlarging IELA’s network by opening our doors to non-members has given us the great opportunity to host the largest event worldwide of the Exhibition Logistics Industry.

For this 6 th edition, we were glad to welcome 400 delegates, 110 of which were not IELA members.

10 national representations came from countries that are still White Spot Countries* for IELA, and we took the opportunity to ask them a couple of questions to learn about the Exhibition Industry in their countries and their experience participating in our event.

Following are the answers we received and we would like to thank them for sharing their knowledge with us.

Dear White Spots: We hope to see you again next year in San Francisco, and maybe welcoming you as New Members!

BELARUS

How is the Belarussian Exhibition Industry developing?

Belarus sees the growth of an exhibition industry as an important indicator of the economic development in general. Located in the center of Europe, Belarus makes use of a strategic position between Europe and Asia. Right between the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union. During the last two years Belarus became more open in many aspects that positively influence the growth of the exhibition industry. Therefore, from year to year Belarus organizes more and more trade exhibitions and fairs, as well as international congresses and conferences.

How was your experience during our 2017 Partnering Event?

As this was our first time of participating in any of IELA’s Partnering Events, we found it very interesting and helpful. It gave us the opportunity to listen to the experience and ideas of highly qualified specialists and other key figures working in the sphere of the exhibition industry. It also gave us the opportunity to meet new people and to spend a very good time with them. Thank you very much for such an experience! t

INDONESIA

How was your experience during our 2017 Partnering Event?

For me, the IELA Prague Partnering Event was a fantastic event. Meeting all my friends from the same industry at the same time created a new energy and inspired us to strengthen our networking and our relationships. We were so happy to meet most of the IELA members who are very interested in becoming our logistics partner in Indonesia. There are many freight forwarders in Indonesia but we are one of the few specialists in exhibition and events.

How is the Indonesian Exhibition Industry developing?

Currently Indonesia has become one of the main destinations of MICE.

You may only know Jakarta and Bali as MICE destinations. In the near future, you will also hear a lot more about events on Bintan Island, Makasar, Balikpapan, Jogyakarta, Palembang and others. This trend also contributes to the growth of the exhibition logistics industry in Indonesia. Finally, more and more overseas organisers have setup their own offices or merged with Indonesian organisers. Times without exhibitions are unthinkable for all major venues in Jakarta and Bali. Since the mid of 2015, Indonesia accepted ATAcarnet shipment already. Therefore, no one needs to worry about customs clearance for exhibition goods, event, concert and sport equipment. But for regular permanent import shipment, our government still needs time to improve the system. Next year, we have the Asian Games 2018 which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang. Another big event is the Annual Meeting of IMF & World Bank in Bali in October 2018. Let us support each other and collaborate. t

LATVIA

How is the Latvian Exhibition Industry developing?

Will speak from what we feel, not from any official source.

Latvia is a small but enthusiastic country in the middle of the so called Baltic states. Our companies, being EU-member countries, are using the full set of benefits available. Whether it is the united European market, or global trade around the world. These benefits along with the EU financial support are good reasons why the number of Latvian producers participating at international exhibitions is considerably growing each year.

Another interesting fact is that some of these companies, that have been participating for years at 'must be' events, are already looking for new and so far undiscovered opportunities. They are looking forward to new countries, new challenges. The local market itself compared to larger countries is small, but stable and developing. Latvia has a full and rich local exhibition season within the country as well. During the season, a wide range of industries are represented, starting with toys and ending with engineering, energy, and medicine.

How was your experience during our 2017 Partnering Event?

It was our second participation at IELA's Partnering Events. After the first participation, we understood that an event like this is absolutely interesting and very useful for our company. It was a fantastic base to meet the industry professionals face-to-face, as well as to introduce our organisation directly to many of them.

This year's meeting in Prague proved to us that we are on the right track. The results from the PE is very much depending on the person participating. As the organisers have done a fantastic job to get the Prague's event rolling smoothly, we only had to do our jobjoin, meet and enjoy. We enjoyed fully. Thank you IELA & thank you Colleagues! t

PHILIPPINES

Mrs. Deedee Ledonio – President of COLTRANS CARGO PHILIPPINES, Philippines

How was your experience during our 2017 Partnering Event?

It was my first time to attend the IELA Partnering Event and I had a great experience interacting and networking with IELA members and non-members. As we have been doing exhibition cargo in the last 23 years and have worked with the Rogers group and some other exhibition agents, I am very happy to see old faces as well.

The partnering event was really fun and a great way to meet new agents and introduce our services. Our company Coltrans Cargo handles most of the trade exhibitions in the Philippines since 1993. After attending the Prague event, I got really energized and I cannot wait to meet more exhibition agents at the next IELA partnering event in San Francisco.

How is the Philippine Exhibition Industry developing?

Although the Philippine Exhibition industry is not yet in its matured stage, the industry is slowly growing. With a new government in place, we are seeing some international organisers bringing in their trade shows or exhibition brands to Manila. We are very excited for 2018.

We are a population of 100+ million people, the middle class is growing and we have a robust economy. I believe the Philippines can be a major player for trade exhibitions in the region.

Although, the Philippines is not yet a member of Carnet ATA and exhibition customs clearance in our country is still not a walk in the park, I am optimistic that as an officer of the Philippine Association for Conventions Exhibitions Organisers and Suppliers (PACEOS), we can address and lobby for issues like this to make the participation of the exhibitors worthwhile especially for those who are bringing temporary cargos to the country t

PHILIPPINES

Mrs. Sonia Sayaman – All Transport Network Inc. (Alta Fairs & Exhibits), Philippines

How is the Philippine Exhibition Industry developing?

I am part of the Board of Trustees of PACEOS, the Philippine Association of Convention, Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers, Inc. and we are working together to make sure that our exhibition industry is being competitive with our neighbouring countries.

I am glad to introduce Ms. Lourdes "Jing" Lagandaon, President of PACEOS to give her views on this regard. “The Philippine exhibition industry is at its best compared to the last 10 years with a number of foreign organisers partnering with local organisers and more exhibitions being organized and conceptualised. The only set back of the industry is the lack of exhibition venues as the major exhibition venues are booked close to 70% of its yearly capacity. A number of international events are turned away just because of the lack of space. The Philippine government, through the Board of Investments/Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Tourism/Tourism Promotions Board, is now closely working with the private sector to slowly address these concerns. It is expected that due to a closer collaboration, the Philippine exhibition industry will grow exponentially in the next 5 years.”

How was your experience during the 2017 Partnering Event?

Being in the exhibition logistics business for the longest time, I felt so excited participating in IELA's Partnering Event for the very first time. Several reasons made me so enthusiastic to attend this prestigious event:

1.Meeting agents that I have been cooperating, corresponding, talking overseas without seeing their faces will finally be over.

2. Discussions were fruitful, informative, productive and fun, of course.

3. I had a blessed visit of different churches in Praha and a great time visiting the city!

Our company is now considering to become a member of IELA in the near future. t

SERBIA

Mrs. Tanja Ljubojević – Event Manager of Universal Express Fairs & Events d.o.o., Serbia

How is the Serbian exhibition industry developing?

In the last few decades, it has developed very rapidly. Serbia hosted a large number of exhibitions and business events. As a suitable tourist destination, a large number of tourists are attracted to these events.

The main organisations which organise exhibition in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, is Belgrade Fair. During the year in their fairground more than 20 fairs take place. Universal Express Fairs&Events d.o.o. was nominated as Licensed Forwarding Agent of all trade fairs organized within the premises of Exhibition Center and on site worker.

Also we need to mention Novi Sad fair and their famous Agricultural fair where we also assist.

Not only in these two cities is the exhibition industry widely distributed, but all over the country.

How was your experience during our 2017 Partnering Event?

It was my first time to participate in an IELA Partnering Event and I need admit that it was a great experience. As an event manager working in the logistic sector it was a pleasure to meet colleagues with whom I am working. Also I need to mention that during the event I met a lot of new partners and we started good business cooperations and friendship as well.

This IELA event is an opportunity for individuals to increase their professional interests and to improve their careers.I hope I will see you all in San Francisco. Till than feel free to visit me in Serbia. t

VIETNAM

Mrs Dung Hoang Thu – CEO of Vega Logistics, Vietnam

How was your experience during our 2017 Partnering Event?

First of all, I would like to say that we found it so useful to join the IELA events. We have joined IELA for three years now and we have seen the development year by year in terms of shipment volume and reliable partners in this industry.

Moreover, I also found many good friends who I can trust and we motivate each other not only in business terms but also in life generally. I have got a very good feeling with IELA.

My experience of IELA 2017 Partnering Event was wonderful because now I have become more familiar to other members and vice versa, people know each other more closely and are trustworthy. That’s so great.

How is the Vietnamese Exhibition Industry developing?

We are also very optimistic about the Vietnamese market: the number of shows/events per year have increased a lot during the last two years and the size of each show/event also expands. There are also many new organisers with new subjects to be held. Because there are many enterprises are moving their business to Vietnam.

For reference here are the numbers of shows taking place at SECC (Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center, the only exhibition center of Ho Chi Minh City): 2015: 32 shows, 2016: 38 shows, 2017: 58 shows

Our export has also increased, so the away games also develop. t

GED17 & GED18: The Global Exhibition Day, the day for our industry to celebrate!

IELA is a proud supporter of t he Global Exhibition Day, an UFI and IAEE initiative, created in 2016 to celebrate the ex hibition industry and t he people who work in it!

We did celebrate GED17 last June 7th with great team pictures and a nice visual of the logos we received.

Our expanded network contributed to GED17 countries countdown , filling the positions 53 to 60 and also the number 70! Great achievement!

Altogether, UFI has registered the participation of 77 countries and regions (+21% compared to GED16!) and hundreds of direct actions. 2,200 pictures promoting GED17 were shared online and the hashtag #GED17 reached more than 3 1 million people on Twitter!

IELA will soon start to celebrate GED18. Are you ready?

The kick-off will be held at IELA’s 2nd Operations Summit in Hong-Kong in February 2018, where we will carry out our first event showing IELA’s support. In the near future, we will let you know how all IELA members can get involved. Stay tuned! t

In August 2017, the Assoc iati on of t he Germ an Tr ade Fa ir I ndus tr y (AUMA) has carried out its annual study on exhibition revenues. It is based on 2016 revenues and includes exhibition organisers, exhibition hall operators, and companies that work in both sectors.

CEIR 2017 Second Quarter Index Results

The Growth of Exhibition Industry Accelerated

The Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) reports that the growth of the exhibition industry accelerated during the second quarter of 2017 after a temporary setback in the fourth quarter of 2016. The performance of the industry, as measured by the CEIR Total Index, posted a robust year-over-year gain of 2.9% (see Figure 1), compared to a year-over-year increase of 2.2% for real GDP. The industry has finally outperformed the macroeconomy for the first time since the third quarter of 2016 (see Figure 2)

Communications and Information Technology, and Discretionary Consumer Goods and Services all registered robust year-over-year gains. In contrast, Business Services as well as Raw Materials and Science posted year-over-year declines. Especially the latter failed to build on the modest gain as oil prices faltered during the first quarter.

In the second quarter all exhibition metrics recorded positive year-overyear gains (Figures 3 and 4). Real revenues (nominal revenues adjusted for inflation) posted the largest increase of 4.0% followed by attendees which rose 3.8%, whereas net square feet and exhibitors gained 2.1% and 1.8%, respectively. t

"The increase in the second quarter validates our prediction that economic fundamentals continue pointing to moderate growth for the exhibition industry," said CEIR Economist Allen Shaw, Ph.D., Chief Economist for Global Economic Consulting Associates, Inc.

UFI’s 19th Global Barometer: the digital transformation of the industry

This latest edition of UFI’s semi-annual industry survey, concluded in July 2017, shows a growing industry, currently refocussing on and advancing in digital transformation.

}Globally, the majority of exhibition companies report increases in turnover and rising profits for 2017 – but regional differences remain

}Companies focussing on the economies in their respective home markets and on increasing competition within the industry

}2/3 of survey participants have implemented at least one digitisation initiative

While the vast majority of survey participants reported increases in turnover and rising profits in 2017, top management is more focused on the economic development of home and core markets rather than on global economic growth. In addition, “competition within the industry” has become the second most important business issue. Globally, digital products and services are increasingly implemented in the industry.

Economic developments

Regarding turnover for 2017 and the first half of 2018, at least 74% of respondents in Asia/Pacific and Europe declared an increase.

In the Americas and the Middle East/Africa, the results were slightly lower: 66% of respondents in the Americas and 58% of respondents in Middle East/Africa reported increases in turnover.

“The optimism already outlined in the survey conducted six months ago remains valid, with a series of positive signs in most markets”, comments Kai Hattendorf, UFI Managing Director/CEO.

When asked about their top business issues, the “state of the national/regional economy” was considered most important, with 25% of all respondents naming this as a top business issue.

“Competition from within the industry” was considered a top business issue by 21% of the survey respondents.

Companies indicated that “global economic development” was less important than it had been in previous surveys, with only 20% of respondents naming this as a top issue.

Regarding additional top issues, “internal challenges” and “impact of digitisation” take the next two places. Within digitisation, is it noteworthy that – compared to the results from summer 2016 – the share of companies citing “new digital products” as a major topic has grown from 36% to 61%.

Digitisation - first time ever overview of activities in this field

Results show that the majority of companies have responded to the accelerating process of digitisation in the exhibition industry. The U.K., Germany, China, and the U.S. are identified as the exhibition markets who are currently most active in the digital transformation process.

Two out of three survey participants reported that they have added digital services/products (like apps, digital advertising, digital signage). This is the norm already in Germany (100% of respondents), and is also widely established in Brazil (82%) as well as in the U.S., Russia, and Thailand (73% each).

Concerning internal digitising 55% of the global respondents stated that they have changed internal processes and workflows to be more digital. The most advanced exhibition markets here are Thailand (73%), China (71%) and Germany (69%).

One in four companies participating in the survey reported that they have developed a digital transformation strategy for the whole company, with Mexico (58%) and the U.S. (45%) leading.

One in five companies created a designated function (like a Chief Digital Officer) in the upper/top management – led here by China (33%) and Germany (31%).

Finally, also one in five survey participants stated that they have launched digital products not directly related to existing exhibitions – a development especially visible in the U.K. (50%) and the U.S. (36%). t

How to become a BOM Member ?

Dear Peers, dear Friends, Dear Fellow BOM Members,

After a few years of reflection, I decided to throw myself into the fire and to be up for BOM election. I received kind support from several board members that thought I would fit the position.

It is indeed the right moment. My department is now powerful enough to allow me to spend more time and put more work and energy into IELA.

I had three minutes to introduce myself and convince you to vote for me as a new board member. As I said it was just the average duration of a song but I did not sing, I did not beat the drum but I tried to deliver a strong and genuine message to tell you how much IELA changed my professional life in giving me the idea to teach and the will to put my passion into a job I now do for 26 years.

Green–like the German Forest and a symbol for the commitment to the protection of our environment Eagle – with a sharp eye for the tiniest detail, while maintaining an overlook from a large altitude Bremen – I’m deeply embedded in the hanseatic business culture of my hometown

“Light my Fire”, The Doors: throw me an idea and I love running with it Painter – I would love to bring my ideas for prosperity to canvas and paint a bright future for our industry “Star Wars” – and I want to be a Jedi!

Chinese Fortune Cookie – go for the surprise inside A mule – I’ll be happy to carry a load all the way, but not being treated with respect, I’ll get stubborn and won’t make a move

I literally started the exhibitions life pushing crates like a lot of you I guess. I climbed all the stairs to become a seasoned professional and also to become one of the many people in IELA. Every day I contribute to inoculating the “exhibition virus” to the youngsters and newcomers that we train at the Winter Seminar in Zurich once every two years.

I have shown my full commitment to IELA by being the chair of the training working group and a regular lecturer. The next stop for me was to enter the BOM to give back what IELA gave me over the years.

I take this election as an honor and a mission and I will give everything to promote IELA and our Industry worldwide and serve wherever I might be useful.

A big thank you to the whole membership and to the numerous members that trusted me with their votes.

Do not forget that the BOM is not a closed VIP / Happy few Club ! It is open to all members willing to stand for election and help to move things for the well-being of our wonderful association, so WELCOME !

Warmest regards, Emmanuel Pitchelu t

STANDARDS & CUSTOMS WG

Dear IELA Members,

After half a year of desk work for the S&C WG I finally got the crowd together in the meeting room in Prague.

I have to admit that I was a little nervous, too, before the meeting on Sunday morning. I skipped the coffee break and made my way through the jungle of meeting rooms in the hotel to prepare for my first meeting I will be chairing for the group.

Some lonely minutes began. Only myself in the room with that big table. Will it be enough chairs for everyone to sit in or even too many… will anyone show up at all??? Checking my watch after a couple of minutes, double checking if I am in the correct meeting room… yes, room is correct but still no-one here…

Finally the crowd arrived and people did not stop to drop through the door. There were not enough chairs at the table after all but uncomplicated as we are, our business people could help themselves.

So my first meeting started and I could give an overview to the new members in the group and new IELA Members on what we have achieved within the group in the past.

The main topics which were discussed during the meeting were the newly established Security Guidelines for IELA. A draft had been sent to the existing working group members prior to the meeting for all to read through them and make comments on the guidelines.

The security guidelines were agreed to be useful to our membership and clientele, some minor amendments were made. The work about the guidelines was concluded and the guidelines are presented to the BOM for final approval.

The main topic about the IELA survey was still how we could achieve a 100% response rate to the survey. As always this topic was connected to a lively discussion within the WG and as every year we came up with a couple of very good and new suggestions to consider. These new ideas are now proposed to the Secretariat.

For our work throughout the year we have some more topics and thoughts to discuss within the working group and I am sure the group will be able to create some benefits for IELA as was and is our main goal.

CHAIRWOMAN

Dear Fellow IELA Members,

I hope you all had a nice long vacation after the Prague Congress we attended back in June so we can start the “Tradeshow Season” off well rested! As “Winter is Coming,” we say goodbye to the beaches and hello to the convention centers and fairgrounds. I am looking forward to my early morning “Non-fat Pumpkin Spice Lattes” while running around the showroom floor.

It was so nice seeing all of you in Prague and having a very successful inaugural meeting of the

“Think Tank” Working Group. I have to say the amount of members in attendance and involvement was beyond expectations and very much appreciated. The brainstorming of ideas kept on flowing and made the whole session more of a conversation. And I am very happy to report what is to come from this fantastic team this coming year!

Based on our discussions and topics we decided to have two main groups headed by project managers. The two groups are Team Vendor headed by Chris Ray (AMR Group) and Team Millennial headed by Mark Lopata (ML Intl Expo Logistics).

stream by selling space and sponsorship packages to these vendors in order for them to present their product at the “IELA Vendor Showcase.” This showcase could possibly run every other year with the “Partnering Event.”

#TeamVendor

Team Vendor will focus on providing IELA Members a resource to find prescreened and approved companies that can supply the needed services and products that are a necessity to our industry (CRM Systems, Cargo Insurance, Equipment, etc.). In achieving this goal the team is going to create an “IELA Approved” Vendor List. The Vendors on this list will be vetted by the IELA Secretariat and will offer special services and exclusive deals to IELA Members. Through this list, the team will also create a “Vendor Showcase,” where members can meet face to face with these companies to find the best fit with service options to suite their individual needs. Through this showcase, IELA can also create another revenue

Team Millennial will focus on the “Millennial Gap” in the Logistics / Freight Forwarding Industry. IELA Members have voiced having trouble, attracting, and/or retaining Gen Y to work in their companies; stating our industry is not “Sexy or Glamorous” enough and that it is hard to keep that generation motivated. Therefore Team Millennial will be working on a set of projects to help educate IELA Members about Gen Y and also educate Millennials on how “Sexy” the Logistics/Freight Forwarding Industry can be. One project that the team hope to complete by the next Congress in San Francisco is a “Millennial Forum” where Experts in Millennial Behavior and an actual Professional Millennial can help IELA Members get a better insight into what it takes to keep and motivate Gen Y employees. Another project proposed is creating an IELA Internship Program where IELA can recruit candidates from Universities that have an interest in our Industry. From there IELA Members can volunteer to take these Interns and enroll them in an intensive training program.

This will provide a more skilled workforce pool for IELA Members

to hire from. Neil Goatcher (Exhibition Freighting UK) has already taken the initiative to reach out to local Universities that have good Business Programs. The final project proposed that will take the most effort is a “Logistics is Sexy” IELA Ad Campaign. The Ad will be able to showcase the Lifestyle of an IELA Member and/or a Logistics/Events Professional. We are looking into inexpensive distribution and filming options such as Snapchat and Instagram.

I am happy to report that one project that was proposed during the working session in Prague, “The Organiser Portal” on the IELA Website has been approved and is currently in process of implementation. This Portal will help educate Organisers about appointed freight forwarder

shipping instructions; the “do’s and don’ts” for exhibitors in regards to freight forwarding, as well as the advantages on appointing an IELA Member over a courier services. Madame Chairwoman, Ms. Mariane Ewbank (Fulstanding) has already started the conversation amongst the other Working Group Chairs/Vice Chairs to complete this project. Suggestions from fellow members are always welcome, if you would like to share your input please contact myself or Alexandra with your ideas.

We hope to at least complete two to three of these projects by the San Francisco Conference. As of now we wait for some approvals to move forward with the proposed plans and we will hit the ground running to ensure implementation when approved.

Sky’s the Limit with the “Think Tank” Working Group, IELA Member’s should look forward to the positive and innovative changes coming from this team. Once again, if any of these topics and/or the purpose of the “Think Tank” WG interest you please feel free to reach out to myself to join the group and/or share a suggestion. Thank you for your continued support.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again in San Francisco and accomplishing greatness for the IELA Organization!

Cheers to our Continued Success, Tania Khodayar t

}MEMBERSHIP WG

Dear friends,

It’s been my honour and pleasure this year to take over the reins of the membership working group (MWG) and I must first extend my gratitude to the one and only Ravinder Sethi, who has lead the group for the last few years. It’s through his guidance and encouragement that I take charge of this important part of IELA with the hope that we, as the WG team, can help drive IELA forward. The first job as Chair of the group was to ask/select a Vice Chair, which in itself was not an easy decision bearing in mind the talent available but I am glad to say that Lena Widman gladly accepted my offer.

Together Lena and I are making a great team, we think alike and both have IELA’s interests at heart.

Since the meeting in Prague the BOM has decided that a “Task Force” should be set up to look at all aspects of the group right from the initial application right through to the final vote at BOM level. The Chair of this group was initially Achim Lotzwick but since then Achim has decided to stand down as chair of this group but still remains an active member of the task force. Achim suggested that I take over his role on this important group and I have been asked to chair this process, which I have gladly accepted. The other members of the Task Force include;

21st century paper applications are

“So Yesterday”. Why is it that I can book flights, apply for credit cards or obtain tickets for a concert from the comfort of my computer but when it comes to applying for membership of IELA we ask people to complete an application form, scan sponsorship forms etc. and send it all to the secretariat to start the actual process?

Surely in today’s age this can be all done online, with electronic signatures and the sponsors also completing their obligations through the wonders of the internet. The investigation of this proposed change has already begun but of course the implementation, if approved by the BOM, some way off. But watch this space and who knows anyone could be getting a link to click on to sponsor a new applicant.

Work on this Task Force has begun in earnest, there is still a lot of work to carry out but the group is agreed that we should present to the BOM a sound set of recommendations rather than just a list of ideas. We would rather be bold and decisive rather than just be a talking shop for ideas.

Talking of ideas one thing which came out of the MWG meeting in Prague was the thought that in the

I’ve always know that this group has been dynamic and progressive, it’s certainly not one to sit still and rest on its laurels. However it must be noted that, and I believe I speak for everyone in the MWG, that we will never lose sight of what IELA is about. IELA is family and like every family we have our hot talking points but at the end of the day the association has that something special that other associations can only dream of.

IELA}}REPORT8560

Dear Members of IELA,

It may come as a surprise to you that this chairman's report is being delivered by me. This is due to the decision of the Board of Management (BOM) to apply some changes in personal responsibilities. With his election to BOM, Emmanuel Pitchelu has accepted some new assignments and job responsibilities which left him no choice but to surrender the position of Chairperson of Education and Training Working Group. The designated Chairperson, Regula Winter of Agility, unfortunately has not been able to undertake her commitment as Chairperson at this time. IELA is very grateful, though, that she has accepted to continue her role as Vice Chairperson of this Working Group.

It is recognized with much regret that Emmanuel is not leading this Working Group anymore. He was great in working with the team, he introduced new ideas and projects and was a true leader in making things happen. We owe him a fantastic Winter Seminar and IELA is very grateful for all the work that has been done.

While I'm talking about the Winter Seminar, it's a pleasure to understand that the success of the event also needs to be credited to the entire team that has been running the Winter Seminar for

more than a decade. Daniel Bataller of Sempex, Jim Kelty of Airways Freight Corporation, once again contributed their enthusiasm and experience to the Winter Seminar to make it happen once again. I also bow to The Secretariat, with their endless efforts to make the Winter Seminar the prime event which it was.

The next Winter Seminar will only be in January 2019 and what will the Working Group be doing in the meantime? We are hearing so much about the IELA Webinars, The IELA Academy, Operations Summit and in Prague we have been delivered the IELA Training Manual which was written by Jim Kelty, a magnificent piece of work. These projects are so comprehensive, that a Working Group, realistically, with it's limited depth, can hardly carry them out in full. A Working Group can only deliver a certain input in an environment of team work. The lead on these projects is always with one or more members of the Board of Management, with huge support of The Secretariat.

The Training Working Group has been transformed, we have new members making up for the highest number membership we had in recent years, which is eight dedicated individuals from IELA Members from all over the world. I'm personally very grateful to all

of them for making the decision to join the working group.

We will be working on different subjects and focus on a particular subject every month:

Cultural Skills and Competence

Input Webinars

Input The IELA Academy

Input Operation Summit 2018

Input Winter Seminar 2019

Research industry related associations for their training programs (benchmarking)

Review IELA Training Manual

Look at opportunities to educate related industries on exhibition freight logistics

It's an honor for me to be responsible for this working group once again.

With those true professionals being a member of the group, and those exciting themes to be discussed, I'm very confident that we can deliver tangible benefits to the IELA Membership.

Dear friends,

Certainly, our Prague Congress was a successful one and our working group was part of it.

We had a high attendance and very lively discussions to define the new target of our recently rebranded Group. It is particularly important for me to underline the increased participation of ladies from all the regions of the world that brought huge enthusiasm and new input.

Many ideas came up during the meeting, particularly focused on the possibility of creating bridges to National Chambers of Commerce, as they are today deeply involved in the development of trade through exhibitions (as never before). I'am

sure more news will follow in the next months concerning this matter. Another point discussed during the Congress was the possibility to provide data for all our partners regarding the extent of our activity, the essential information showing externals the importance of our business.

The summer just ended and September was already very rich of different reciprocal agreements signed with key associations of the exhibition industry in different regions of the world: MACEOS, the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers, signed a MoU with IELA during the AFECA Forum in Taiwan.

Beside the MoU, a hyperlink between IELA and ESSA UK (Event Supplier and Services Association) websites was already created.

You will find more info about it in a different part of this report.

I am sure that the next UFI Assembly in Johannesburg will also definitively bring more good news and increase the visibility of IELA thanks to the great work of our Secretariat and our Chairperson as well as the one of our great IELA members in the country of the Big 5.
