Sophie Crawford, a senior at GCSU, attended the September 18th meeting in Arts and Sciences. She is a domestic student and enjoys attending the club meetings and events. Asked why she attends, she responded with, “I studied abroad for a month in Spain this past summer so that I could earn more credits towards my Spanish minor and because I really wanted to experience living in another country. I had such an incredible time studying abroad and loved learning about another culture. I decided to go to the International Club because I really missed the sense of community I felt during study abroad and I also missed being surrounded by people from other cultures. I had a good time and I think the club is a great place to meet new people and to broaden your horizons.” Sophie studied on Georgia College’s Cuenca program this past summer. To learn more about the program, check out the IEC’s webpage or visit the IEC at the Bone House on campus.
As someone who has already studied abroad I was able to share my experience to prospective students about the program I came to fall in love with.

Dr. James Callaghan, senior international officer, assists a student at the Opportunities Abroad Fair. The Fair was held on GCSU’s Front Campus on September 25th from 10-2 P.M. The event consisted of 24 tables featuring study abroad programs offered here at Georgia College, and promoting their upcoming opportunities abroad. Faculty, student study abroad participants, and representatives from each of the programs educated and offered students information on every program. The International Education Center also had a tent and table staffed by students who are studying at GCSU from out of the country, including students participating in athletics at Georgia College.
Fernando Saenz Aguilar is a senior economics major from Guatemala City, Guatemala. He was surprised by the size of the GC campus as well as the diverse student body. “There’s people from everywhere here, so it’s fun to meet people and share different ideas,” said Saenz Aguilar. He enjoys watching movies at Bell Hall, swimming in the Wellness and Recreation Center’s pool, and studying in Russell Library. Saenz Aguilar also likes the friendliness of the faculty and students, and appreciates all the friends he has made. After graduation, he hopes to use his economics knowledge to help his home country and potentially work in a public or international office.
Farah Dawood is a junior computer science major from Beheira, Egypt. As someone who had never been in the southern United States, she was surprised to receive a scholarship to attend college in Georgia, but she is very happy with where she is. She appreciates the hospitality of the faculty and students. “Everyone is so welcoming here. It can be a bit different when you’re an international student, but I have felt so welcome.” When asked what her favorite part of GCSU is, Dawood responded, “I like the buildings. There’s lots of places to hang out, study... I like the library, too.” After graduation, she hopes to become a software engineer and promote study abroad back in her home country.
Cano Krpuljevic is a first-year international studies major from Podgorica, Montenegro. He was surprised by the variety of campus organizations at GCSU and the smaller class sizes. “At schools in Montenegro, you’re given an index number, and that is how professors know you. It’s nice to not be just a number here,” said Krpuljevic. He loves the people, the activities, and the natural beauty of Milledgeville. After graduation, Krpuljevic hopes to work with the Red Cross and other organizations before working in diplomacy.
