As my time on the IFPS Board of Directors comes to its end this year, it’s a good time to reflect on the state of our industry and the major changes since I joined the board in 2013. In the mobile hydraulic market, the most influential challenge was the Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 regulation to lower exhaust emissions for diesel engines. Mobile OEM’s in construction, mining, forestry, agriculture, and other markets faced many questions. Where do we fit this after-treatment device on an already crowded machine? How do we perform more work with less horsepower? How do we control the cost of this new design? How do we accommodate the engine’s increased demand for cooling? SKILLS FOR THE CHANGING MARKET The changing market calls for skilled, technical application personnel at various levels (Machine OEM, System Integrator, Component Manufacturer). Fortunately, my employer (Kraft Fluid Systems) places an emphasis on technical training and IFPS certification to continue meeting these challenges. At no time in our company’s 45-year history has this been so visible. Mobile machines require hydraulic systems to be evaluated as never before. This requires we identify and remove inefficiencies that could consume even a small bit of precious horsepower. Helping an OEM replace a 99 Horsepower engine with a 74 Horsepower engine, without affecting productivity or performance, is a rewarding task. To do so requires technical-systems training and experience to understand the machine operation. Picking components from a catalog simply does not work. Knowledge of the system and application is vital to the success and profitability of the OEM. ROLE OF HYDRAULIC MANUFACTURERS Hydraulic manufacturers, as well, have stepped up to the plate. Our firsthand experience with innovations from Danfoss Power Solutions has allowed us to launch machine systems integrating hydraulic components, Plus+1 ™ electronic controls, and critical communication with the diesel engine itself. In some cases the Kraft Electric Drives division is seeing demand for an electric motor to replace the diesel engine as the prime mover in the hydraulic system. Technology is evolving at a rapid pace, and will continue to do so. Most likely, as unbelievable as it may seem, it will continue to accelerate in the coming years. “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” FUTURE Who will design, apply, build, and maintain these systems in the future? As the technology in our industry continues to change so rapidly, the IFPS certification program continues to train and evaluate these professionals. The newly updated Hydraulic Specialist and recently released Electronic Controls Specialist certifications are complete, thanks to the efforts of my colleagues on the IFPS committees, as well as the IFPS staff itself. As exciting as these certification updates are, they are just the tip of the iceberg of the coming attractions. While our industry stays hungry for highly skilled technical application professionals, the IFPS will continue to feed that hunger.

Art At the annual Amsterdam Light Festival, the best light artists from around the world light up the Amsterdam canals. From November 20, 2017, to January 21, 2018, visitors can once again enjoy the beautiful installations and works of art downtown, including a piece by artist Lambert Kamps. Pneumatics specialist Aventics supports the festival as a sponsoring partner.

With “Touch of Time,” a huge illuminated digital clock, the Dutch artist Lambert Kamps has created a pneumatically driven work of art. “The underlying idea for ‘Touch of Time’ came about ten years ago when I wanted to control the amount of light by removing a light source. I managed to do so with a pneumatic control: I moved a translucent plastic tube with an LED strip back and forth in a gray PVC tube so that there would sometimes be more light and sometimes less. Turns out, I found this movement much more interesting than simply looking at the light.” Since PVC tubes wear very quickly, Lambert Kamps sought professional assistance for his pneumatic project: In April 2017, he contacted Aventics to discuss his project with employees at the Dutch subsidiary in Boxtel. “The project impressed us right from the start,” reports Geert-Jan Stöver, General Manager of Aventics Benelux. “At first glance, art and pneumatics have little in common. But at second glance, you will see that pneumatics, a simple

and clean technology, offers the reliability Mr. Kamps needs to realize his project.” The display measures approximately 10 meters wide by 5 meters high and incorporates 30 pneumatic cylinders. The aluminum cylinders, which measure approximately 1 meter long and 50 mm in diameter, were custom-made by a separate third party. Each cylinder houses a translucent polycarbonate piston that contains an LED strip inside to provide the light. The pistons travel back and forth inside the cylinders (like conventional pneumatic cylinders) and the lights are switched off once the piston is retracted fully inside the cylinder. The cylinders are actuated by the Aventics ES05 valves, connected via parallel wiring to a computer that’s running a program developed by the artist to generate the visual display. The computer controller and the valves are housed in a control cabinet that sits outside to accompany the display, so the pneumatic valves needed to be durable for continuous opera-

tion in rugged environmental conditions with extreme temperature fluctuations. The air lines from the valves to the cylinders are 8 mm (from valve to cylinder) and 12mm (as ring line power supply) in diameter, and the total length used is approximately 250 meters (of 8mm line) to 500 meters (of 12mm line). The self-operating display runs off a 2.5 m3 compressor with approximately 1.8 bar of pressure, and a flow volume measuring approximately 500L/min to actuate all 30 cylinders. “With this system, we offer our customers a particularly economic, user-friendly solution for applications in industrial automation – and in art, too,” chuckles Stöver.

The general manager is particularly delighted that “Touch of Time” is featured at a prominent location, right across from the main train station, during the Amsterdam Light Festival. “Our pneumatics are in the spotlight.”

I conducted an anonymous, sevenquestion survey at the Society of Women in Industrial Distribution (SWID) at Texas A&M University, where I was a guest speaker. The survey was given to women ranging from approximately 19-22 year olds, who were enrolled in the Engineering School, pursuing a BS in Industrial Distribution. All the women were currently living in Texas (although three of the women were on work visas from China). The questions covered the women’s views on the fluid-power industry and the expectations the women had of prospective employers. Below is an overview of the responses, which give insight into the “millennial generation” of women.

Those who said yes thought the industry was challenging, and they were attracted by its technical aspects, which, they said, would allow them to think critically and continually learn. One woman described the industry as detailed but versatile. Some enjoyed the class given by the fluid-power professor at Texas A&M, and, as a result, would consider a career in the industry. A number of those who said they had not considered the industry had not done so, according to their comments, because they did not know much about it. Two said the subject of fluid power was too challenging for them.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being unimportant, 10 being very important), how important is it to you that your employer engages in company activities that positively impact the community (walks for cancer, food bank drives, etc.)? For all but one of the women, these company activities ranked at 6 or above. For 8 of the women, these company activities were a 10 (very important).

CONCLUSION

Over the past few years, I’ve heard the grumblings of many who say that the millennial generation just isn’t willing to work. However, after speaking with many bright, talented women in the SWID program, I had to question if that was truly the case. My primary purpose in offering this survey to the students was to determine what motivates this younger generation of students, in an effort to better understand their perspective. Ultimately, I have concluded that these students are not lazy or unwilling to work, but rather, the way in which they would ideally like to work is different from their predecessors. These students did not just learn technology, they were born into it. The ability to log in from anywhere in the world and work has always existed for these students, and they are eager to show prospective employers what they are capable of. It is telling that the majority of women are more interested in a company who invests in their personal growth, and offers workplace flexibility, rather than money and benefits.

ig. 1 illustrates two cylinders being used in a hydraulic system. Cylinder 1 moves the load horizontally and cylinder 2 lifts the load vertically. Next, solve for the pressure required by cylinder 2 to balance the load using a 2.5 in. bore cylinder X 48 in. stroke. Again, it is assumed the cylinder applies only the lifting force and that friction is not a factor. In actual practice, a margin is added in order to allow for system losses, friction, and the force of acceleration. Since these factors can vary greatly, depending on the system dynamics, the static pressure required to balance the load shall be used in these calculations and on the exam.

Cylinders with smaller bores could have been selected without exceeding 2,500 psi, but friction and inertia will cause the pressure to increase to higher levels. The friction that must be overcome is caused by several

factors. One factor is the mechanical friction between the dynamic seals of the cylinder and the cylinder walls and rod. In addition, as the fluid flows through the fluid conductors, pressure will drop as a function of both the internal friction of the fluid as well as the friction between the fluid and the walls of the conductors. As fluid velocity increases, and as the number of bends in the conductors increases, pressure drop increases. This pressure drop is a measure of the amount of fluid friction evident in the system. Good system design strives to minimize this pressure drop. For these calculations and those on the exam, losses due to mechanical and fluid friction shall be ignored unless they are specifically included in the problem.

Step 3: Plot the work cycle, calculate flow rates, and size components. The cylinder extension portion of the work cycle is shown in Fig. 2. Before calculating the flow rate required to extend the cylinder, the velocity of the cylinder must be calculated. For cylinder 1, solve Equation 2.5 for this value:

Hydraulic Controls and Filters FOR CUSTOM-FORMULATED CONCRETE

ProAll Reimer Mixers operate on an entirely different principle than does the typical concrete truck one might see on the road. Instead of mixing the cement, aggregate and water while on the road, a Reimer Mixer delivers the constituents to the job site in separate bins and mixes them on-the-spot. This approach offers several advantages, including the ability to deliver concrete over long distances to remote job sites and the ability to control the composition of the concrete precisely as it’s delivered, including the addition of various other materials for special purposes, such as fiber, color, and other chemical admixtures.

Additives to Concrete

The purpose of adding a colorant is self-explanatory, but other materials are routinely added to concrete to achieve specific characteristics. For example, glass, steel, synthetic and natural fibers can reduce the perme-

ability of the concrete to reduce water bleeding, help control cracking during drying, and improve pumpability, impact, abrasion, freeze-thaw and shatter resistance. To achieve the desired properties, though, the fiber component of the fiber/concrete composite must be carefully controlled, with fiber typically being 0.1 to 3.0 percent of the total volume. Chemical admixtures fall into six basic classifications: • Air-entraining - to improve freeze-thaw resistance • Water reducing – to produce a stronger concrete and to provide more consistent setting times • Retarding - to counteract the accelerating effects of hot weather • Accelerating - to counteract the effects of cold weather • Plasticizers (superplasticizers) - to increase the fluidity of concrete • Specialty admixtures – for specific purposes, for example, a corrosion-inhibiting chemical to retard corrosion of steel reinforcements.

As was the case with the addition of fiber, the proportions of each admixture must be carefully controlled to achieve the desired properties in the concrete. Coordinating the motions of the various augers, belts and valves required to achieve the exact mix specified for each batch of concrete requires a sophisticated hydraulic control system with capabilities far beyond the simple directional valve and motor arrangement used on a drum-type mixer. ProAll’s newest model, the Commander™, uses a multi-valve manifold to control the belt that delivers materials to the mixing auger in exact quantities, according to a program entered into the system’s computer control via a touchscreen. The hydraulic system consists of a pair of load-sensing piston pumps, one supplying 30 gpm for the mix-auger, and the other supplying 20 gpm to the belt circuit. A gear-type charge pump is also included in the semi-closed-loop system. Maximum operating pressure is 3,600 psi, with the mixing auger typically operating at 2,500 to 3000 psi, and the belt circuit at 1,500 psi. Control is provided by two banks of proportional valves mounted on low-profile manifolds. The precision valves needed to achieve the necessary level of control require effective fluid filtration. ProAll has standardized the Eaton HP171-0011 pressure filters for the 100 or more Reimer mixers they build each year. These are high-pressure, cartridge-type filters equipped with 7-micron, Beta 1000 elements. HP series filters are rated to pressures up to 6,000 psi and maximum flow rates of 180 gpm. ProAll also replaced the basic fill-cap style 40µm breathers on the Commander hydraulic reservoirs with Eaton MBR110 Mobile-gate™ air breathers.

Certification Testing Locations Individuals wishing to take any IFPS written certification tests can select from convenient locations across the United States and Canada. The IFPS is able to offer these locations through its affiliation with The Consortium of College Testing Centers (CCTC) provided by National College Testing Association (NCTA). To register for a written certification test: 1. Fill out an IFPS certification test application including your desired location by visiting www.ifps.org. 2. FAMTEN = Bringing New Talent to NFPA Members BY ERIC LANKE, NFPA PRESIDENT/CEO

Coming in 2018, FAMTEN is the Fluid Power and Applied Mechatronics Training and Employment Network, and its focus will be on developing and introducing NFPA members to new technical talent entering the fluid power job market. FAMTEN will do this by stacking four necessary program components in a single community: • A middle school outreach program to raise fluid power education awareness; • A high school education program to develop initial competencies; • A two-year tech school degree program to deliver the skill sets NFPA members are looking for; and • A network of industry partners with facilities near the community to provide mentorship to students and jobs to graduates. We’re pleased to report that Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) in suburban Milwaukee has been selected as the first FAMTEN tech school. Due to its proximity to the NFPA office and its dedication to implementing fluid power curriculum, we believe WCTC will be our first, best opportunity to create a successful FAMTEN Hub. NFPA has many members with facilities in Southeastern Wisconsin and Northeastern Illinois who can benefit greatly from the partnership with WCTC. Once the program is launched, NFPA members in the region will be able to network directly with fluid power students who will soon be entering the job market. Our long-term strategic goal is to build 12 of these FAMTEN Hubs in important fluid power communities around the country. The vision is to identify where NFPA members have manufacturing or assembly facilities and to align our expansion plans with education partners in those communities. It is an ambitious goal, and we won’t be able to make it a reality without ongoing donations from our members to the NFPA Education and Technology Foundation. With those donations, we plan to get company representatives engaged on our Tech School Education Committee, which will play a critical role in directing and supporting this program. If your company is currently a Silver or Gold level donor through the NFPA Foundation’s giving society, the Pascal Society, your company has already been asked to place someone on this committee. If you are currently a Bronze level donor, this may be the best time to consider upgrading your company to the Silver level and make the most of your involvement with NFPA. We look forward to launching the FAMTEN Hub at WCTC in 2018 and seeing what kind of successes and challenges come along with it as we develop the plan for other FAMTEN communities. With your support and participation, more FAMTEN Hubs across the country will connect more members to the talent they are looking for to help drive the future of their businesses.
