MATTHEW WHARTON

Early in my career I would say “the only good thing to come out of August is September.” I eventually came to think otherwise but the recent hot and dry weather we just experienced did have me reminiscing.

March and August are the two months of the year when most golf courses do not look their best. March because the different grasses are waking up from their winter dormancy at different times and rates making things to appear as if always in transition.

August because all the environmental stresses of summer (heat, humidity, extended dry weather, and/or too much rainfall) have taken their tolls and the grasses display differently how they handle or succumb to the stress.

But September is now here, which means it’s football season and we all know defense wins championships. And speaking of defense we were forced to play strong defense this past week to help preserve and protect the golf course.

We are just now entering the second growing season for cool-season grasses, but the golf course began to turn itself around during the false fall conditions we all enjoyed August 1922. Those cool mornings triggered the environmental responses necessary to begin turfgrass recovery.

MATTHEW WHARTON

So, when Mother Nature brought the real heat of summer to Lexington this past week it was imperative to protect the recovered turf. We only mowed rough once this past week instead of our normal two cuttings. Fairways, tees, and approaches also received one mowing reprieve each throughout the week. Greens were spared double mowing, and the only rolling performed was during the early morning hours. We had a small army hand watering many playing surfaces to ensure plant health was maintained without allowing conditions to become too wet. As the long, hot week ends I am proud of the team and the work they accomplished as the course continues to look better each day.

In other news you may recall we initiated a repair operation on Hole 5 week before last by transplanting turf from in front of the cross bunkers to weak areas within the landing zone and near the approach. Our plans to replace the removed grass were delayed by the recent heat wave as it prevented our grass supplier from harvesting. We will patch that area as soon as possible next week.

Some good news, our range tee after weeks of no germination due to excessive soil temperatures finally began to show signs of life! We are optimistic we will continue to see more germination as the soil temperatures begin to fall back into optimum range. The same is true for certain areas we seeded on the golf course, the seed has not germinated yet, but we remain optimistic things will begin to happen soon.

MATTHEW WHARTON

G O L F S U P E R I N T E N D E N T

I am also happy to report the herbicide treatments made last month to the areas of unwanted grasses have made an impact and these areas continue to improve each day. We have a planned fertilizer application to these areas to thicken the desirable grasses as the growing season has returned. We will alter our preemergent herbicide strategy in these areas next season, and this issue should be a distant memory.

September is a busy month for cultural practices so I would like to lay out the schedule for you so you can plan your golf accordingly:

September 9 & 10 the golf course will be closed for putting green aerification The process will include both a solid, deep tine and a hollow core, shallow tine with heavy sand topdressing.

September 16 & 17 Wehrkamp Enterprises will be on site to aerify all fairways. This is the same contractor that performed this operation in March and has been aerifying the fairways at Idle Hour for more than a decade.

September 23 will be our fall fertility bulk spread as all fairways and rough receive their annual fall feed to boost plant density and root growth as we head deeper into autumn.

Of course, we are also excited for the event on September 24, and we hope to see many of you. Now that summer is officially over, we hope you will make some time for fall golf.

Thanks for reading, and happy golfing!
