Introduction: We’re thrilled to welcome Chef Matthew Blazey to Idle Hour Country Club as our first Director of Culinary Operations.
In this new role, Chef Matthew will oversee all aspects of our culinary program including a la carte dining, banquets, weddings, and special events He will work closely with Executive Chef Dillon Phillips and the entire kitchen team, bringing hands-on leadership and a wealth of experience from both the private club and luxury hotel worlds
A Cincinnati native and graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Scottsdale, Arizona, Chef Matthew has led kitchens of all sizes across the country from Minneapolis to Arizona to Washington, D.C. In the private club space, he has served as Executive Chef at Lexington Country Club, Camargo Club in Cincinnati, and most recently, Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville. Along the way, he has played key roles in club renovations, hotel openings, and brand transformations always with a sharp eye for quality and innovation.
Chef Matthew believes in food that connects to the soul, to memories, and to the senses His goal is for members to experience dishes that spark a sense of nostalgia or familiarity, while also being presented in creative, unexpected, and thoughtful ways
Chef Matthew and his wife, Blair, are proud new parents to their daughter, Hallie, born just 9 weeks ago They are thrilled to be returning to Lexington and joining the Idle Hour family.
Please join us in giving Chef Matthew and his family a warm welcome!
Measure Twice, Cut Once: As some of you have noticed, work on the staircase outside the Golf Shop has momentarily paused. The reason for this momentary pause is to ensure that the club proceeds with this project in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible. Specifically, as this area of the clubhouse directly connects with areas that will likely be updated this Winter, the Board decided to develop a single approach for the entire area. The Board understands that having an unrepaired area of the clubhouse for the remainder of the Summer is not ideal, but believes that this strategy is a better long-term solution for the club and our membership.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we take the time to plan responsibly and ensure lasting improvements
Quote of note: “Perfection is what you are striving for, but perfection is an impossibility. However, striving for perfection is not an impossibility. Do the best you can under the conditions that exist. That is what counts.” – John Wooden
Thank you again for your continued support and enthusiasm With summer in full swing, here’s to a July filled with sunshine, laughter, and memorable moments with family and friends
And as always Go Idle Hour Gators!
In Service and gratitude, Chris
Please join us in congratulating team members Natasha Schalk and Levi Fitzgerald for earning the title of Idle Hour “Rock Stars”.
We recognize and appreciate their desire and dedication to go above and beyond in taking care of members and their fellow teammates. They embody the mission and vision of our club and consistently strive to make us a robust and welcoming private club providing the best experience that Lexington and the surrounding area has to offer. More than just great team members, their contributions make the team great!

Levi has truly come into his own this month and it has stood out to both the membership and his fellow teammates. Even after a long shift, Levi is always sure to ask if anyone else needs assistance prior to leaving. His constant positivity is a bright spot during the dog days of Summer and it certainly deserves recognition!

I was born in Hamilton, Ohio, and raised in Kentucky, though I spent my summers in Hamilton. I lived in Florida for around nine years, spending time in Orlando, Melbourne, and Cocoa
Whatisyourjobtitleandhowdid yougetintothiscareer?
My title is Accounts Receivable and Membership, and I’ve been part of the club industry since high school My journey began at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club in Melbourne, Florida, followed by Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Orlando, Florida, where I gained valuable experience. I also worked in catering in West Palm Beach, further broadening my skills. When I returned to Kentucky in 1995, I landed a position at Idle Hour Club, thanks to a recommendation from my previous General Manager, who was affiliated with the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Club Managers Association While working towards my associate and bachelor’s degrees, I balanced roles as an assistant manager in the Food & Beverage department and part-time office work on Mondays In December 1999, I transitioned to the front office, where I developed expertise in Accounts Receivable, expanded into Accounts Payable, Payroll, Human Resources, and ultimately took on responsibilities in membership management.

The club now sported a new swimming pool, its adjoining summer house, and the patio outside of the dining room had been rebuilt The greens fees were set at $10 for weekdays and $15 on Saturday and Sunday One group said that these fees were "prohibitive" The records show that the golf course costs for 1967 were $58,000, 1968 they were $64,000, and 1969 they were $79,000 There was a comment in the Board's minutes that the monthly Board meetings were lightly attended from 1966 through 1970.
In 1971 the Board approved a Regional Qualifying Round of the U. S. Open Tournament. There was also a round played by the famous Gary Player at the Idle Hour Four new tennis courts were completed in August in time for the I H Invitational Tennis Tournament
Now a word about the membership process of the Board of Governors First a sponsoring club member filled out a nomination form and then collected some statements by other members about friendship, character, ability to become a good member, and to be congenial with other members. Then, the Boards membership committee would do some
follow- up and then present the names to the full Board for a vote In the first 30 years, the Governors would pass around a small box and each member would put a little white ball or a black ball into the box After a round, the number of black balls was tallied and if one was cast, the prospect's name was turned down. In 1971 the rules were changed so that it took two black balls to turn down a prospect. There is a great story about this change concerning Mr. Rasty Wright. He really tried to keep golfers out of the club, so that 'his' course would not be crowded when he and his friends wanted to play. Thus, he usually cast a black ball for all active golfers. This grew embarrassing and was keeping some fine members out of the club, so the rule was changed to ` two' required for a turndown New membership applications began to arrive and get passed Rasty was a major factor in the early success of the club, but he was wrong on this project Years later, to further screen the potential members, a rule was passed that prospects had to be personally known by several Bo d b Thi i l d tt di kt il t with prospects and their sponsors to meet with the Board members
At this time, Mr. Bill Young, who had joined the club in 1957, was made a member of the Board of Governors He had been active in management and knew what was going on in successful board meetings He submitted some new rules of operation for the club and they were quickly adopted On a light note, one rule was retirement from the Board at age 65, but this became less important as time went by

Finances were pretty tight at the beginning of 1972 and the club had a long-term debt burden of $348,000 The Board decided to get on a more stable footing and raised the initiation fee to $ 1,500 The dues were increased on July 1st, which was the first raise in 21 years. And Senior members were assessed $1,000. each. There were 7 new members for the year and 28 Junior members plus 2 special members (usually clergy). In May the manager was terminated, and the Board prevailed on club member Dick DeCamp to take a temporary leave from his position in Alex Campbell's office to fill the vacancy. In August a new manager was hired, but he quickly was dismissed as not up to expectations- in October.
However, the club recruited a Mr. James Courtney as manager to begin in March 1973. He was a very unusual man. You will find more about him when you read his interview coming later. He had come from a manager ' s position at a top Dallas Country club and decided to take the Idle Hour job because his wife was from this Bluegrass area. He stayed for 14 years and was replaced by Mr. Chris Carton.
The annual January bondholders meeting had 18 men plus 3 ladies present Among the many items discussed was the need for a female member on the Board of Governors The reply was: ` not now, but they would certainly would be candidates for the Executive Committee' The club had 644 members in six classes of membership The Board changed the rules of membership The prospective member had to be known by at least three Board members Its membership committee would meet twice a year and when the approved candidates were voted upon by the Board, if they received one blackball, they were accepted. Two blackballs called for a second vote after discussion, and three means the candidate is rejected.
The club did not hold a 1974 New Year's Eve party because the party in the past year was a fiasco Board Chairman Bill Young had a Mr Tom Forte, President of the Club Corporation of America visit and make suggestions about the Idle Hour operation In December the initiation fee went up to $4,000 for residents and $900 for non-residents. Intermediates paid $500 and Juniors paid $100. Because of the continuing deficit problem, the Board started a policy of assessing each of the Senior members a proportionate share of the deficit of the past year. This assessment amounted to $25 per bond holder for 1974. (pretty good).
In 1978 the demand for redecorating and renovating the clubhouse was such that bids were taken and Jessup of West Palm Beach was hired to redecorate the clubhouse for $250,000. The clubhouse was also renovated and was closed from January 7th to March 1st for the job. The lady's locker room was rebuilt for $28,000 and the kitchen was upgraded for $28,000. The Grill was kept open in January. In 1979 there was an appraisal of the club's property, and the clubhouse was valued at $ 770,000, the contents at $379,000, the men ' s grill for $396,000.
Before we look ahead to what July has in store on the golf course, let’s take a brief look back at June. We continued our wet trend with sixteen days of measurable rainfall totaling four inches. Granted, that’s the driest month since March, but four inches averages to about one inch per week, and that’s about what most cool-season grasses need to survive.
We worked hard preparing the greens to perform in back-to-back weeks for The Classic and Men’s Championships. And we were pleased with the way they performed. With changes to the golf schedule and Men’s League enjoying a “half-time” we are now working hard to alleviate stress during our warmest, and most humid time of year. Our focus is to provide a smooth putting surface while we focus on plant health and limiting traffic stress.
The long, hot, humid days of July places a premium on moisture management, plant health, and traffic management. The team is working diligently to maintain our irrigation system and isolate any issues so they can be corrected quickly. Seaweed extract is added to our plant protectant applications to boost the turf’s ability to withstand stress. Traffic stakes, signage, and the like are routinely moved. For golf course maintenance, it’s that time of year where one day quickly phases into the next and before you know it, August is here.
June also saw us remove a few tree stumps, backfill with soil, and grass with sod We also sodded the abandoned landscape bed adjacent to the black tee of hole five. We had one major irrigation issue that required some assistance to repair a fused connection on one of our twelve-inch HDPE mainlines. The timing wasn’t great as it coincided with the arrival of the hottest temperatures of the year, but everyone worked diligently to get the repair made in a timely fashion and all is now well.
