MATTHEW WHARTON

Dear Idle Hour Members,

I am certain it comes as no surprise today’s message is in regard to Helene. I have endured more than my fair share of hurricane and tropical storm remnants throughout my career in Southern Maryland and North Carolina, and Helene ranks up there with her impacts.

Overall, the golf course fared well, tree damage was minimal with only seven total trees encountering considerable damage. And thankfully most are out of play. We did have lots of other limbs and tree debris scattered about the golf course which takes considerable time to clean up. The rainfall total for the storm was 4.47 inches. Considering we had received measurable rain for the five days prior to Helene’s arrival totaling 1.03 inches means we wrapped up September with 5.5 inches of rain between September 21 and 29. That is more than one month’s worth in just eight short days!

Add that total to the spattering of rain received earlier in September and the total for the month equaled 6.26 inches making it the wettest month of the year. Our rainfall total for 2024 is now up to 41.12 inches which is 2.31 inches more than we received in all of 2023.

MATTHEW WHARTON

As for other golf course related information. Our team continues to diligently put Humpty Dumpty back together. Bunkers are being machine raked to loosen the compacted sand from Helene. Leaves, sticks, and other debris are being collected and carted away. Trees are being cut up and their remnants removed from the grounds. And then there is the task of mowing. That much warm, tropical moisture saturating the soil has awakened our grasses and keeping up with the mowing will not happen until after we catch up first. Everything is being mowed and/or double mowed for the foreseeable future until the grass slows down. Fortunately, it looks as if cooler, dryer weather is moving in to our region starting tonight which will help us get rid of this nagging cloud cover so we can see some sunshine. It is what Idle Hour needs most right now.

Thanks for reading, and happy golfing!
