Q&A Identity

Everyone probably has that one look that they once had which keeps haunting them for the rest of their lives. It raises many questions like “how did I dare?” and “why didn’t anyone give me their honest opinion?” Then again, maybe the look was trendy back then and everyone more or less sported it. Here are some of Identity Magazine team members recounting the worst outfit they ever pulled off:

Q: What’s the Worst Outfit You Ever Pulled Off? A’s: “Drop-waist dresses that were trending a couple of years back. Please don’t come back not-so-dear trend.” - Rola “Trying the “Spanish” veil on.” - Riham “Once, I wore a yellow shirt on white pants, and to me this is just a no no! Never again.” - Ragui “I can’t call it the worst, but it’s indeed the weirdest. I had to wear an African Kenyan attire that my friend lent me for a traditional Johannesburg party. It was like a bed cover wrapped up and tied around the shoulder. They advised me not to, but I just had to wear pants underneath.” - Ahmed “I wore a penguin onesie to college once.” - Mostafa “For Eid, I had two jackets that I equally like, so I decided to wear them over each other. I didn’t have another option.” - Youssef “Other than that one time when I had to put on an Indian Sari for a school play, it’s the other time when I had to be Chinese for another play and wore those silky Chinese shirts. I will never be able to pull off a Chinese traditional costume!” - Karen “Wearing gold shoes, not those fashionable ones, but the ones you would look at and puke.” - Sarah “I once wore a pistachio colour evening dress to a wedding, the bright neon eyeflashing pistachio. I probably got rid of it right after the wedding!” - Sandy 8 October 2017

Some people are jealous because of the following reasons: Low self-esteem People who do not see themselves as worthy are very prone to jealousy fits. If that is your husband’s case, he feels that he does not deserve you, that you are too good for him, and that you will eventually figure that out and leave him. Insecurity An insecure person is always afraid of being dumped and of losing people in his life. The irony here is that usually the insecurity is the cause of the loss; he actually loses you because of his insecurity not the other way around.

SICK OF IT ALL by Marwa Rakha

Dear Marwa, I have known my husband for a long time before marriage. To be honest, throughout our relationship he’s always been a bit jealous and we’ve had our share of fights about it. Now, this jealousy is turning more into some kind of possessiveness. He has to question all my outfits, not to mention interrogating me whenever I’m out or whenever my phone battery dies. Things are starting to get out of hand and I know he’s doing it unintentionally or even out of love, but I’m starting to suffocate from all those trust issues. I talked to him about it, but he keeps giving me the excuse of the extreme love he has for me, and that I already know how jealous he is. Bottom line, I am sick of it!

Lack of Trust In this case, your husband simply does not trust you. The lack of trust could be because of something in your history with him, or even before him. For example, he has caught you lying, has discovered something that you intentionally hid, or has caught you in the act of flirting or cheating before. Bad Experience That person has been fooled and cheated upon before. It could be once or more; it does not matter as long as the damage has been done. The once trusting person, can no longer trust anyone, especially his partner. Questioning your actions makes him feel in control and that he cannot be fooled again. A Gaping Wound Someone who has seen, or heard, one of his parents cheating on the other, is incapable of trusting anyone. Within the hearts and minds of these people, is engraved the body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, excuses, and attitude of the cheater. They see these signs in their partners and in people around them. Over the years, they become adept interrogators and then excellent detectives. Their partners are always guilty until proven otherwise.

Only a therapist will be able to help your husband with his issues; hence, saving your marriage. If your husband refuses to see a therapist and get professional help, you will suffer further. You will eventually lose your own selfconfidence, and you might intentionally neglect yourself to avoid the guilt charges being thrown at you. In some Dear Sick-Of-It, cases, people who are always accused of cheating, end My sincere advice to you and to your husband is to up cheating. In other cases, they get a divorce, only to investigate therapy options! When a man, or a woman, is find themselves becoming obsessed with, and paranoid literally sick with jealousy, that person needs professional about, being cheated upon. help. Jealousy has many reasons and some of these reasons are buried deep within that person’s black box. If your husband refuses to get help, consider asking for a divorce.

SKINCARE FUTURISTS MEET THE FUTURE OF SKINCARE AND YOUR NEW BEST FRIENDS 2017 has been a great year for high-tech innovations. We`ve seen everything from smart footballs to self-driving cars threatening to roam the streets. However, 2017 sees the rise of an industry previously hardly acquainted with high tech at all and it is - beauty. Gone are the days when you cared for your skin only with water, soap and your favourite moisturizer. These days, T-sonic pulsations is a term you should be familiar with. Enter FOREO. This award winning (this year alone they won a whopping 16 beauty and design awards including Men’s Health Grooming Awards and Teen Vogue 2017 Acne Award) Swedish high tech brand is conquering the world. High on innovation and meticulous about ground-breaking design, FOREO has a range of beautiful beauty gadgets that will make you very popular this season. From a range of colourful electronic toothbrushes to revolutionary skincare devices for both sexes, no one will stay indifferent at the sight of these beauties. The strongest in the range is LUNA 2, a sonic cleansing facial brush boasting up to 8,000 T-sonic pulsations per minute – removing oil and grime, and residues of make-up, while also allowing skincare products to penetrate more deeply. The device, which

comes in four different models and colours (each for a specific skin type), also has an anti-ageing mode to target wrinkle-prone areas with lower frequency pulsations. The skin is revitalised, leaving the complexion naturally radiant and ready to glow. With winter just around the corner, be sure to update your routine and keep that skin glowing, all year round. Looking at Gigi Hadid's outfit, you can tell that this might be what you would wear most of the time and that’s why it looks so good. Beauty lies within simplicity. So get simple: Ripped jeans from ZARA and the H&M basic t-shirt, with a black bromper and the same flat ankle boots.

In this scene, Sandra Bullock appeared with a pencil skirt suit, a slightly open-toe pump heels and a camel colour bag. Nothing fancy, yet she still perfectly portrayed the business woman who is caught up on her work and nothing more. If you work in a corporate environment, that’s your go to look. It’s easy, simple and hassle free. Here is what you need: ASOS pencil skirt, Zara blazer (it doesn’t have to be belted) and ALDO pump heels. The open toe is optional.

Ever wondered how Sandra Bullock nailed the business woman look in The Proposal, or how Gina Torres meant business in her Jessica Pearson role in Suits? Both styles were similar even though one was too stiff and the other was laid back yet too formal; a combination that is hard but approachable. Well wonder no more, here’s what you need.

Balenciaga

Gina Torres nailed the look of a corporate attorney whatever she wore, one can’t simply pick one look but rather the style itself. Under the knee, almost ankle length, black dress spiced up with a different colour heels and a black sharp-edged purse. The most important tip is that you customize any outfit to fit your body type. Don’t let anything limit you, but rather learn to customize it to suit you.

Get the Look Makeup & Hair by Dahab Elkady & Dahlia El-halawany

Ever passed by a celebrity look on your timeline and wondered how could you create a simple neat hairstyle or achieve such a glazed look using your everyday makeup, without the need for professional makeup artists with bags full of Chanel and Dior products? We sought out a list of tips and tricks; check them out and you’ll be ready to go in no time!

Hair BUTT LONG EXTENSION Long hair is always a catchy look; Snow White had short black hair that was never noticed like Rapunzel’s! You may pull your hair up and make it fall smoothly or have a half up half down princess

CHIN LENGTH LOB Cutting your hair to your chin looks so beautiful when waving your hair with blond highlights. Give it a try!

14 October 2017

PIXIE CUT No one can ever guarantee that this boy haircut would match perfectly with every head but once it’s a match, it’s a goal! Some girls keep it for infinity once they try it! It’s a risky decision to take, but experimenting with different dos is always needed.

BRAIDS Knowing how to make a braid is a blessing for every girl! Braids are no longer the daily school hairstyles. Celebrities are now using different kinds of braids in their red carpet looks. Look out for some really unique and surprisingly simple braids.

Makeup SMOKEY EYES LOOK Well renowned model Cara Delevingne is always known for her catchy beautiful eyes. Using NYX’s Dream Catcher Palette after applying a cover stick concealer from Amanda Milano on your eyelids would give you the look perfectly. A slight use of eyeliner would also help, so you may want to try Mac’s Black Track.

NO MAKEUP LOOK Sometimes even a no makeup look can be a bit hard to achieve, but all you need to have is a collection of light colours eye shadow palette; L’OREAL Paris comes highly recommended for such use. A light Ombre Blush Powder from NYX will complete your an all natural look for a night out.

BOLD LIP LOOK You may need to focus on the burgundy colour on your lips more than your smokey eyes or your peachy blush. Start with contouring your cheeks and adding Maybelline’s mascara to get the perfect volume for your eyelashes. Steadying your lips with a liner prior to applying a dark red lipstick from Mikyaji would be ideal to finalize this look.

VICTORIA SECRET LOOK We may call it the nude look.Victoria Secret’s models are usually the ones who use it the most. Start with “babyskin” from Maybelline as a primer then apply some highlights to create a bronzy look. Most importantly is the nude lipstick; you can find infinitive skin tones and choose what suits you from NYX’s London matte lipstick creams!

How to Make your Makeup Look by Karen Shawky

Last W

earing makeup can be a hassle for a lot of ladies out there, especially if you’re going out to a restaurant or a party. Well, at the restaurant, you might end up being unable to drink normally because you’re afraid of ruining your lipstick by fading the middle area of your lips, and don’t get me started on how awfully embarrassing this looks. At a party, you may end up going to the bathroom every couple of minutes to check that your eyeliner is still put, your mascara is not crumbly and your foundation is not causing a scene by how cakey it looks. Worry no more; you will be as comfortable as ever with the following hacks:

1

+ E.L.F

Lancome

EYE-LINER LIFESAVER While there’s only one tip to lasting lips, there are a couple of them for eyeliner. It’s not very easy to keep your liner put throughout the day, but it’s applicable. First, you need to set your eyes with eye-primer and let it dry. If you don’t have a primer, you can apply translucent powder, line pencil liner, liquid liner for more sharp edges, and then trace your liner with concealer to prevent the liner from smudging or feathering. Applying waterproof mascara will help keep your liner put.

HAVING TO FIX YOUR LIPSTICK EVERY 10 MINUTES? Here’s the thing, your lipstick fades after eating, drinking, or just a couple of minutes talking. Here’s the solution: after applying your lipstick grab a tissue and place it on your lips, and with a brush dab translucent powder on it. Boom your lips are ready!

Nars Mac

3

IF YOU DON’T HAVE WATERPROOF MASCARA The ultimate mascara challenge is to keep it moist to avoid clumpiness. Why keep your mascara moist? Because that’s the key for lasting mascara. To keep your mascara moist, you need to add 5 drops of saline solution and it’s ready.

+

Applying translucent powder between coatings of mascara gives it a less clumpy full look. Also, Heat your lash curler with your blow dryer before curling your lashes. It will help keep a good curl all throughout the day. The best time to use your curler is before you apply your mascara.

Maybelline

The Body Shop

4

FOUNDATION First you need to make sure that your face is not oily, so the foundation can be absorbed by your skin to avoid having a blotchy look. Then you need to wait 5-10 minutes before applying your setting powder to avoid a cakey look later. These steps will keep your foundation looking fresh and put through the night.

+ Neutrogena Mac

5

KEEP YOUR PERFUME LAST LONGER To keep your perfume scent throughout the day without having to suffocate everyone around by spraying it over and over again, pick your spots. The perfect spots are the back of your elbow, your wrist, behind your ear and your clothes. The scent simply spreads whenever you move. As weird as this might sound, adding Vaseline to where you sprayed your perfume will keep the smell intact.

PROJECT RUNWAY DESIGNERS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? by Mostafa Heshma

Project Runway is an American reality television show on Lifetime, previously on the Bravo network, which focuses on fashion design. It’s created by Eli Holzman and hosted by model Heidi Klum. The contestants compete to create the best fashion designs and are restricted in time, materials and theme. Their designs are judged, and one or more designers are eliminated each week. During each season, selected competitors are progressively eliminated based on the judges’ scores until only a few contestants remain. The finalists prepare a complete fashion collection for the New York Fashion Week, from which the season’s winner is determined. Through multiple seasons, the program left us wondering where do these talented designers end up, where do our favourite contestants eventually go? We tracked the best ones to see where they are now! 30 October 2017

LEANNE MARSHALL After she won her 100,000$ prize, Marshall moved to New York to develop her own line. Her designs were featured in New York Fashion Week from 2008 till now. She has a lot of celebrity clients like Paula Abdul and has been featured in various magazines such as US Weekly, People and Elle. She launched her bridal line in 2011 and created an exclusive collection for BHLDN in 2014.

AUSTIN SCARLETT Maybe he didn’t win Season1, but he still made it big in the fashion scene afterwards. He won his very first challenge in the show with a classy corn husk dress. As a reward for his exquisite designs, he was named as Creative Director for couture wedding brand Kenneth Pool. In 2012, he launched a signature line of eveningwear and gowns.

DOM STREATER She was the first African-American to win the show and take home the grandest price ever of 500,000$. She also won Project Runway: All Stars Season 5 in 2016! She currently has her own fashion line, as well as famous clients including Samuel L. Jackson’s wife and Lisa Nutter. Fashion Weeks SS‘18

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of the year again! The most anticipated month has finally graced us with the INS of the Spring/Summer 2018 fashion trends. Let’s all take a deep breath and relive those priceless moments. Fashion weeks started off in full swing and we’re here to recap all the standout collections and runway looks that made our jaws literally drop. Take note girls, this is what you’ve missed.

by Sarah Sorour

NEW YORK NEW YORK! ALEXANDER WANG Nothing could equate Alexander Wang’s fashion extravaganza. He went all out this week turning the streets of Brooklyn into a runway show. The models were escorted by bus to the arena, which was surrounded by barricades that separated the audience and the runway. The show was accessible to anyone who wanted to watch. The girls left the bus, straight onto the runway as they wore party headbands to celebrate the brand.

32 October 2017

TOM FORD Tom Ford was one of the first designers to open fashion week, and boy oh boy he did not disappoint! He transformed the entire arena into a slick lounge and added lavender lighting to complete the intended ambiance. This set the tone for the rest of the week, as designers also competed for the craziest and most creative catwalk.

CALVIN KLEIN Another designer who lived up to the buzz was Calvin Klein. Kia Gerber, daughter of the legendary super model Cindy Crawford, made her first fashion week debut. She wore the diner-inspired opening looks, setting the mood for the rest of the show. Calvin Klein’s collection evoked the horrors in cinema and used prints of the iconic Hollywood photography by the late Andy Warhol.

RALPH LAUREN Ralph Lauren wanted to create a line that is inspired by his beloved vintage cars collection that were elegantly placed right in the middle of the runway. The models wore Ferrari-red ball gowns among other colors that complimented the automobiles.

HELLO LONDON!

BURBERRY Burberry was one of the most talked about brands on social media, and we have the scoop! The collection’s palette was mainly made of neutral palettes of pastel colours as well as patterns and Burberry’s signature plaid.

TOP SHOP Jourdan Dunn, Haley Baldwin and Joan Smalls were among the fashion royalties that reigned Top Shop’s catwalk. The brand’s readyto-wear garments were dominated by metallic. From the coats to the boots, the shiny fabrics came in all colours.

EMPORIO ARMANI Emporio Armani’s show started off with lounge music to compliment the elegant-feel of his collection. The runway show began with looks that included childlike prints of cartoonish sea motifs and ended with a sharper vibe of effortless tailoring of colourful suits.

TOMMY HILFIGER Tommy Hilfiger closed out London Fashion Week with a bang. Literally. He turned the entire arena into a Rock ‘N’ Roll party house. His clothes perfectly emulated the theme as his muse Gigi Hadid also showcased their collaborated 3rd collection. October 2017 33

BUONGIORNO MILANO!

DOLCE & GABBANA This fashion duo stuck to the classic Italian aesthetic that saw a lot of bold prints, black dresses and lingerie-inspired garments. The runway show was heavily based on the “Queen of Hearts” theme using ‘love’ as the main inspiration.

VERSACE Donatella Versace brought back the glamour of the 90s in the most unexpected way. Her collection was pulled directly from the years 1991-95 archives, revamping her late brother’s signature print motifs; and let’s just say that the show’s finale reunited the top of the top original 90s supermodels Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen.

MOSCHINO There’s nothing we love more than a fashion overboard, and there’s no one who can outshine a Moschino show more than Moschino itself. This season, Jeremy Scott embraced the cartoonish side of fashion by collaborating with My Little Pony. His capsule collection included an array of colourful tutu skirts, flower-inspired gowns, his signature oversized sweaters, leathers and fishnets.

34 October 2017

GUCCI Gucci’s collection embraced clashing prints that mimicked the 70s era and old school styling. Gucci’s aesthetic saw him collaborating with British artist Helen Downie on a ready-towear collection that included a mix between colorful floral motifs, prints and portraits.

EN ROUTE VERS PARIS YVES SAINT LAURENT Hundreds of spectators took the streets of Paris to watch the epic Yves Saint Laurent show with the Eiffel tower sparkling in the background. This collection was aimed for the girl who wants to enjoy life to the fullest. The models showcased the epitome of hard and soft glamour; with ostrich feathers, leathers, chiffon wear, shiny garments and lace. DIOR The Dior runway show was all about womanpower and female artists. Christian Dior set the tone of the show by leaving a copy of the great feminist Linda Nochlin’s 1971 essay “Why have there been no great women artists?” The collection featured a lot of denim-wear, polka dots, checkered garments, stripes and leathers.

CHLOÉ The collection was meant to showcase Chloé in its different times. The runway looks effortlessly depicted in the brand’s signature chic and cool style. One of the collection’s main goals was to work with the models’ personality and choose the clothes that best fit their character. The overall feel of the designs was meant for the French country girl, with each design featuring folkloric treeof-life motifs.

KENZO Embracing his Japanese roots, Kenzo started off his runway show with the story of Shinto, the god of storms who slayed the dragon beast, saving mankind from terror. Several dancers carried the eight-tailed mythical dragon across the runway, entertaining the crowd with a 30-minute performance. Overdyed denim was the key textile in Kenzo’s designs; appearing in most of the looks like overalls, crop tops and cropped carpenter jeans. October 2017 35

IDENTITYbeauty

First of all, how did the idea come about? We have been running a successful importing and distribution business of high-end eyelash brands for the past two years and it was always a dream to create our own Egyptian brand with international quality standards, but we needed to study the market first and also take our time with creating a brand identity and a brand image that can compete globally. Why is your launch collection titled ‘The Cairo Collection’? Our Egyptian identity is a key element to our brand’s core values. Egypt, after all, was the civilization that created cosmetics. Our history is full of iconic, inspirational and beautiful women. It was only a matter of time that an Egyptian brand carrying those values would be created and hopefully makes it to the international market. What was your inspiration behind the designs? Through our experience we knew exactly what the customer is looking for in their lash products; whether it’s a professional makeup artist or a woman who loves makeup and lashes. We took those designs, used better quality hair and a more durable band and priced them very wisely. What is the inspiration behind the launch visual and the packaging? Queen Nefertiti was not only beautiful, she was educated, strong, and was once Egypt’s sole ruler. There was more to her iconic beauty than meets the eye, and she truly is a timeless ambassador for Egypt with her beauty and her legacy. We wanted to create a visual that pays homage to her, but make it modern and not tacky. The beautiful Egyptian actress, Noha Abdeen, gave us the face and the features, and Nefertiti’s iconic crown turned white gave it the modern, contemporary look. The one who came up with the packaging design is actually Ahmed Mansour from Mustard Agency; he really managed to materialize the vision I had for the brand. Everything looks elegant and modern.

38 October 2017

What are your future plans for the brand? We are going to be coming out with a new collection roughly every 3 months until our line reaches 40 unique designs, and then we will be getting ready to launch a range of cosmetics using ancient Egyptian ingredients. We already started working on the formulation of a mascara that will take the world by storm. Where can we find your products? We are very selective with the stores we place our brand at, and so our first launch will be at Colors beauty stores, followed by Bloom stores, and last but not least, at Wojooh. You can also log on to our website and easily shop online starting the 5th of October.

#HanaGoesLocal by Sarah Sorour

Starting one’s own blog is nothing new but for the 32-year old Hana, this is a whole different story. Putting the spotlight on our local fashion industry gave Hana the ability and the purpose to shine. Through her hashtag #Hanagoeslocal, Hana was able to become the link between the public and our local Egyptian brands. Egypt boasts a selection of talented designers and fashion-makers that we wouldn’t have known about; be it for Hana’s enlightening blog. It is remarkable how Egyptians tend to find alternatives in times of economic crisis, and Hana is no exception. 1. Has it always been a passion of yours to recruit local brands? How did you start your business? It all started when our Egyptian pound crashed against the dollar. I remember everybody was talking about how expensive everything had become, be it fashion, schools, food etc and rightfully so. I thought hold on, why are these people not looking into our local products that were more affordable instead of complaining all the time?! And coming from having my own local retail business prior to the revolution, I knew how hard it was for the local brands or businesses to shine. To be honest, I had no plan as a business to evolve after I posted that one image of me carrying one of my favourite local brands that makes bags, “NUNIZ”. I had no clue that this one picture would get me where I am today with the hashtag. I remember my caption was something like “The Egyptian pound crashed against the dollar, and we now can look into our local products as this is their time to shine…” something like that, and at the end I just hashtaged it #hanagoeslocal Bam! The response was amazing from the followers and also the designer who called me telling me that clients were calling her asking her for the bag “Hana had posted”, and from there came #hanagoeslocal. 2. Have you thought about extending your business by enlisting international brands for example? That would defeat the purpose of what I am trying to do. I am branding my business by going local so for now I’m only going local in Egypt, but eventually I could branch out and offer other local products and you could shop by country! I don’t know, we will see. For now my whole focus is on Egypt, and I still have a lot more I have planned for Egypt that I feel I could offer these local entities, so I’m taking it one step at a time! 40 October 2017

MIRNA NAKHLA An Aspiring Fashion Designer to-be by Karen Shawky

Mirna Nakhla talks about growing up in a design-loving environment, her never-ending passion for fashion and her own favourite “Golden Age” design collection. We also got to learn about her nerve-wrecking, and consuming college days at Istituto Marangoni in Milan and how this experience pushed her to overcome her fears. The beautiful Mirna talks to us about the importance of hope, hard work and her aspiring wishes of making the world a better place, and we absolutely admire her strength and wisdom. 1. Has design always been a growing passion? Yes, I’ve always been into design. It’s always been one of my many dreams. I grew up with a love for all forms of art. As a little girl I used to draw, design clothes for my Barbies and write poetry. I was also fascinated by young actresses and singers my age, and it has developed my passion for acting and singing as well. I grew up with a passion for fashion, film and music. During my studies at Istituto Marangoni, I learned that they are all connected and they are all complementary. They influence one another simultaneously. 2. What was the reason behind your passion for design? My parents used to work in the fashion industry. They were apparel/garment quality control inspectors, and I used to tag along with them and go to T-shirt factories. I got to see the whole process; starting from the pattern making, the sewing, and dying the fabric to the ironing. I was exposed to the basic know-how of design/production. I also used to watch ‘That’s So Raven’ on Disney Channel. Raven, the main character of the series, designed her own clothes. She was a character I looked up to. 42 October 2017

NINE CRIMES by Sandra Rizk by Sarah Sorour

From an array of up-and-coming fashion designs, Sandra Risk’s Nine Crimes is definitely worth paying attention to. This ready-to-wear clothing brand has launched this summer with a new twist for the 1950’s Boho-chic style. Nine Crimes’ concept works on displaying a laid back and easy feel that surely caters to all fashionistas out there who love to mix and match. 1. What was the reason behind starting Nine Crimes Clothing? What was the inspiration? Well, my passion for sketching and making clothes started around the age of 11. Back then, Egypt did not have many stores and no international ones in specific. Shopping was never really fun; I had to play around with my closet and pimp it or embellish some pieces to get what I want. Years later, I realised how much I enjoy it and that this is what I want to make for a living. 2. What was the inspiration behind the name? I just love the name. It’s a song by Damien Rice that I’ve always been a fan of, plus when I decided the number of departments I’d like to have under the brand, they turned out to be nine. 3. How can you describe Nine Crimes’ style? Who is your woman? The one who stands out and doesn’t care what others think of her. The one who grabs attention wherever she goes. The one who’s always different. The one who doesn’t need makeup or surgeries to look good. The one who doesn’t seek to impress, yet always does. 4. What do you aspire to do with the future of your brand? Are you open to exploring other styles?

more into designing haute couture and wedding gowns. I believe we need more casual brands and factories. Also, the lack of models. We only have a few good models in the entire country and all brands end up working with the same ones which is a bit boring.

5. Which celebrities you think have the best styles?

8. Are you willing to do an exclusive design for a client?

Believe it or not, I actually know nothing about celebrities. I barely know some names, but I definitely love Rocky Barnes’ style. She’s a fashion blogger. 6. What was the most difficult situation you’ve been in while working on your designs?

No. I’m only planning on creating collections that will be sold on an online store only. Maybe in the future if I extend and start a Haute Couture Department.

To sketch something and not find the right material you imagined for it. It’s something very common in Egypt as we don’t have a wide range of options like many other countries do. Also, good tailors and workers are almost hard to find here. It’s a common struggle for all designers I guess. 7. What is a typical working day for you? Well, I use all kinds of materials in my clothes so I like to go for walks in places like El Azhar, Mosky, Ataba, Darb El Barabra and El Hussein where I get inspired and buy pretty materials and just go back and start playing around with them. 8. What is the worst thing in the fashion industry according to you? If we’re talking about the fashion industry in Egypt, then definitely it has to be the lack of Ready-To-Wear. For some reason, all Egyptian designers on the rise are

AITCH by Habeiba Hassan by Dahab Elkady

When asked about her brand she said, “it’s part of who I am, but not everything I am.” So in this interview we will only get to know that part of Habeiba Hassan, but in as much details as she would like to share. An aspiring fashion designer who is not afraid of trial and error, in fact, she sees it as a learning process. 1. When did your love for fashion designing start? When I was 12 years old, I was watching a TV program where the host was asking the guest celebrity about her daughter’s career. I remember the celebrity saying that her daughter was a fashion designer in London and then started explaining what her daughter actually does; from creating a fashion show and the backstage hassles to the actual process of constituting a whole collection. Since then I wanted to learn more about this field and how to get myself into it. I started to become very interested in the fashion industry as a whole. However, I was still undecided about what exactly I’d like to pursue in it. 2. What obstacles did you face while starting your career? And do you still face them? At first, I didn’t know where to start or how to create a team whose members believe in me and my vision as a designer. I didn’t have any work experience prior to starting my own business, AitchbyHabeiba. I had to start combining what I learned from my business major at The American University in Cairo with what I learned in Esmod Fashion School to be able to create a solid business plan for my brand. On the other hand, being a 24 year old female entrepreneur in Egypt remains the biggest obstacle that I’m still facing up until this moment. 3. Did you ever design something you didn’t actually like just to please a client? If not, would you?

FashionEtiquette by Mostafa Hesham

A

ppropriate dress, combined with basic etiquette, is the essence of the new term “Fashion Etiquette”. We form first impressions and overall judgments about people by the way they dress. If the way your company’s employees dress affects the perception of your customers or even business partners, it is important to maintain a dress code that creates a positive impression! The way you dress carries certain messages to those who meet you. Thus, a company that wants to maintain a professional image or certain status in the marketplace must make its dress code a priority. Each and every occasion or event calls for a different dress code to deliver a certain message and if you mismatch, you can sometimes give the false impression that you don’t care or disrespect the whole occasion! Here Are the Do’s and Don’ts of Mastering the Fashion Etiquette Game!

48 October 2017

1. NEVER DO A BOTTOM BUTTON If you’re a lady or gentleman in a suit, blazer or sport coat then you will have a 1-3 (rarely 4 or more) button closure on the front of your jacket. The three button coat is the classic and thus the rule on coat etiquette is derived from it. An easy way to remember button etiquette is the “sometimes, always, never” rule.
