Expand your career potential and take the next step About this course The Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced) is designed for students who wish to gain a higher degree to help them secure senior management employment in tourism or hospitality organisations. This degree equips graduates with advanced business acumen, management skills and specialised industry knowledge considered essential for managerial-level graduates. Graduates of this course will emerge as confident leaders, sensitive to complex issues and challenges that at times confront the global tourism and hotel industries.

This degree is flexible, enabling students to choose a study plan that matches their career path. Students study core business management units then select from a range of specialised units relevant to their career path including tourism management, gaming management, hotel management and convention and event management Professional placement As part of this Masters degree, students may choose to undertake a 300-hour internship (equivalent to two units) in either a paid or volunteer role. This practical experience, combined with theoretical understanding, enhances the learning experience for students who have a professional and personal interest in this high growth area.

Students are responsible for securing their internship placement and are given assistance in interview and application procedures, access to an extensive database of potential employers and ongoing support from the dedicated work integrated learning team.

Masters units The schedule provides a comprehensive study of all aspects of tourism and hotel management from both theoretical and practical ‘real world’ perspectives taught by academics with industry backgrounds.

In addition to the core units, students choose from a range of elective topics including: tourist behaviour, tourism planning, business events, event planning and design, environmental management for hotels and attractions, service management, gaming behaviour and strategic gaming management.

Students also undertake an independent research project towards the end of their study.

All student assessment methods

Assessment activities and criteria are designed for specific units and reflect Southern Cross University policy and academic best practice and trends. Assessment tasks may require individual or group submission. Many units include a written exam at the end of the study period. Exams may be open or closed book and can include essay questions, case studies, multiple-choice and short-answer questions.

Other assessment tasks include researched essays and reports, case studies, portfolios, annotated bibliographies and are submitted either electronically or in hard copy depending on the task.

Other types of assessment include online quizzes, problem resolution, in-class tests, logbooks, technique tests, portfolios, creative projects and contribution to online discussion, blogs and wikis. Assessment of activities such as fieldwork and professional experience may include supervisor observation and reflective journals and reports.

A wide variety of individual and group presentations is often a component of assessment, and may include oral, audio or video presentations.

Internship

Internships at The Hotel School Sydney provide valuable experience in observation, learning and practice in a business environment. Students are given the opportunity to integrate theory with the practice and responsibility of the workforce.

Students are prepared for internship through ‘Introduction to Professional Practice’, a core study unit written in consultation with industry professionals.

For internship, students may gain experience in any sector of tourism and hospitality and can work in a casual, parttime or full-time capacity. The program requires students to complete six months continuous service (DecemberMay) with one organisation and within this time accrue a minimum of 600 hours experience, as well as complete on-the-job and academic assessments. An academic tutor provides highly personalised attention, advice, academic supervision and mentoring of students.

Paul Weeks

Dr Genevieve Lovell

As Academic Director, Paul’s experience in teaching, learning and research is grounded in more than 20 years in hotel, motel and food service management in Australia and overseas. He has lectured in management, services management and information technology with Southern Cross University since 1991. Paul has published in academic and industry journals, and has co-authored two Australian industry texts: Club Management and Managing Convention Businesses. Research interests include IT in hospitality, education, history, convention services and club management.

Genevieve is ‘hospitality centric’ and a staunch defender of Australian service ideology. She has owned and operated pubs, cafes, restaurants and a guest house. She is currently developing a guest house/tea room/coastal Aboriginal art gallery in coastal New South Wales.

Genevieve’s research interests include; service encounter processes; hospitality skills and competencies and hospitality facility planning and design. She has published in these areas.

Joining The Hotel School Sydney in 1990, Julie remains one of the longest serving team members. Julie continues her focus on communication and tourism studies across all three years of the degree program. Julie coordinates The Hotel School Sydney’s academic learning service to develop and ensure students are supported to maximise their academic results.

On completing her Bachelor of Education at Trinity College Dublin, Jo moved through London and Spain discovering her passion for the food and beverage industry that aided her success and experience managing a number of top culinary establishments across the world. Jo facilitates professional development programs to aid high school teachers with industry updates and teaches food and beverage and environmental management.

A former chef with a vast array of experience internationally and within Australia, Kaikee brings his skills and knowledge to the The Hotel School Sydney. Kaikee works with industry using his professional links. His teaching focus is across tourism disciplines in all three years of the degree program.

Stephen has more than 18 years’ experience working in the international hospitality sector, starting with bars and event management in central London in the early nineties and culminating in running the biggest purpose built nightclub in the southern hemisphere here in Sydney. Madalyn is a highly accomplished and talented career academic and was a recipient of the Rafael Ribas Scholarship and Dux of her degree program. She was awarded first class honors in 2010. Madalyn was awarded a competitive full scholarship for her PhD which she is currently undertaking.

General Manager, Tony Patterson is a graduate of The Hotel School Sydney and Southern Cross University. His career has spanned more than 20 years in senior management roles within the hospitality and tourism industries. Most recently he transitioned into the field of education, leading a number of educational institutes that catered for both domestic and international students. Tony is recognised as an exceptional leader, with a passion for developing and motivating others. This ensures that The Hotel School Sydney students achieve a quality educational experience while the industry gains professional graduates and future leaders.

David’s previous operational experience includes management positions at the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland, and as part of the preopening team at The St David’s Hotel and Spa in Cardiff. In 2002 David returned to academia at the University of Otago, New Zealand where he taught until 2011. His teaching focus is on the social and cultural aspects of the tourism and hospitality sectors. David’s research explores the everyday spaces and practices of tourism, hospitality and leisure, along with engaging mobile methodologies to further the development of a critical understanding of hospitality.

Current publications focus on the mobilities of hospitality and tourism workers, and the role of food in the tourism experience.

Stephen Shaul

Stephen graduated from Michigan State University in the Hotel and Restaurant Management program before joining Sheraton Hotels in Hawaii then Auckland. Stephen joined his family company of Summit Restaurants as Human Resources Manager and General Manager and continued with the Accor group. Stephen has owned and operated restaurants, cafes and HMR concepts. Stephen teaches in leadership, HR and entrepreneurship with interests in structure leadership.

ABSTUDY, AUSTUDY & Youth Allowance ABSTUDY provides assistance for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Benefits for students include the payment of any incidentals allowance to assist with text book and equipment costs.

AUSTUDY Payment is an income support payment available to qualifying students aged 25 years or older. It provides income tested assistance to full-time students who are Australian citizens.

Fee-Help FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible students with their tuition fees. Eligible students include Australian citizens; holders of a permanent humanitarian visa who will be resident in Australia for the duration of the course; or the holder of a permanent visa who is undertaking bridging study for overseastrained professionals and will be resident in Australia for the duration of the course.

This enables students to defer their tuition fees, for part of or for the duration of the course. Students repay their loan through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) once their income is above the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment.

Assessing your application

Your application will be acknowledged by either The Hotel School Sydney, Southern Cross University or through your nominated agent upon receipt (and usually notified by the outcome within one week*). If you are successful, an International Offer Package will be emailed, giving details of what is required to accept your offer. If you are not successful, alternatives may be offered.

The International Offer Package includes the Offer of Admission, Information for Accepting your Offer, Offer Acceptance Agreement and the Fee Acceptance Agreement. *This time period relates to complete applications for the immediate study period.

Accepting your offer

To accept your Offer of Admission you will need to:

To study in Australia you must have a valid Australian visa.

Student Visas are temporary visas that allow people to come to Australia for a specified period to study at an Australian institution. Refer to the ‘Study in Australia’ section on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) website above.

Student visa conditions Make sure you are familiar with the conditions of your visa by reviewing the information set out on the DIBP website.

i. Carefully read through the Offer Acceptance Agreement, Information for Accepting your Offer, and the Fee Acceptance Agreement and make sure all information is correct.

Financial requirements You must have sufficient funds to cover all education and living expenses for the duration of your studies. A recommended amount can be found in the section ‘Student Visa Living Costs and Evidence of Funds’, available on the DIPB website indicated under Student visa.

iii. Sign the Offer Acceptance Agreement and the Fee Acceptance Agreement.

Cost of Living Students should prepare themselves for accommodation and living costs to be at a minimum of AUD$18,610 per year.

Please be advised that cost’s may vary depending on the location in Sydney you choose to stay.

ii. Meet all conditions outlined in your Offer of Admission by submitting relevant documentation relating to the conditions.

iv.

Pay the first tuition payment as indicated in the fee payable on acceptance on the Offer of Admission. This fee includes the prepaid tuition deposit and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the visa duration.

v. Send your signed agreements and proof of payment to int.apps@scu.edu.au

vi. Once your acceptance documents have been received and all the conditions are met (including an interview if required), SCU will issue your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE), allowing you to apply for your Australian Student Visa.

Bringing other family members You may be eligible to bring family members depending on your visa. They will be subject to an increase each calendar year and students are required to pay the new tuition fee each year.

OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) OSHC is a compulsory medical health insurance for international students studying in Australia. Medibank Private is SCU’s preferred provider. For alternative providers, please refer to health.gov.au and search for ‘overseas student cover’.

ESOS Act The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) monitor and regulate the higher education sector’s involvement with overseas students studying in Australia on Student Visas.

Higher educational providers must meet minimum standards set by TEQSA to enable registration under the ESOS (Education Service for Overseas Students) Act. This protects Australia’s reputation for delivering quality education services and the interests of overseas students, by setting minimum standards and providing tuition and financial assurance.

The ESOS Act mandates a nationally consistent approach to registering education providers so that the quality of the tuition and care of students remains high. The professionalism and integrity of the industry is further strengthened by the ESOS Act’s interface with immigration law. This imposes visa-related reporting requirements on both students and providers.

CRICOS Higher educational providers in Australia must be registered to enrol overseas students in specific courses.

Registered providers have a CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions for Overseas Students) code and a specific CRICOS course code. This registration guarantees the provider and the course meet the high standards necessary for overseas students..

Tuition Protection Service (TPS) Recent changes to the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act have further strengthened protections for international students through the introduction of the TPS. The TPS is an initiative of the Australian Government to assist international students whose education providers are unable to fully deliver their course of study.

The TPS ensures that international students are able to either complete their studies in another course or with another education provider or receive a refund of their unspent tuition fees.
