pring has arrived once more, bringing with it a sense of renewal and optimism. It has been a wonderful season here on the Northwest Florida coast, and I’m filled with gratitude for all that I have.
From its inception, VIE has always focused on the positive and beautiful aspects of life, promoting inspiration and loveliness. Our headquarters are located in an idyllic beach town, and many of our readers have a taste for luxury and refinement when they travel. This issue is dedicated to uncovering hidden gems and new experiences.
The ups, downs, twists, and turns of life’s journey (to paraphrase Dr. Seuss’s final book, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!) can lead to unexpected discoveries and awakenings. Travel has always fueled my imagination and allowed me to explore life’s nuances.
As a New England native, I am thrilled with the cover of this issue, which beautifully captures the classic charm that people often associate with one of my favorite regions in the country. The April 2025 Culinary Issue of VIE featured the stunning coastal Maine wedding of my nephew Bobby Crowley and his bride, KeYana, in an article titled “A New England Wedding Paints an Autumnal Masterpiece.” The wedding took place in the picturesque town of Ogunquit during the peak of fall foliage season and provided a long-awaited family reunion.
The Cliff House in Cape Neddick and The Dunes on the Waterfront in Ogunquit were the perfect venues for our family’s gathering. Ogunquit was named the No. 1 Vacation Destination for 2024 by Real Simple magazine, while The Dunes on the Waterfront was recently included in Travel + Leisure’s 2025 It List: 100 Best New Hotels in the World and was ranked among the Best New U.S. Resorts. Additionally, The Cliff House received a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating for 2023, the only global rating system for luxury hotels, restaurants, spas, and ocean cruises.
Discover the charm of these quintessential New England getaways in “The Dunes on the Waterfront – An Idyllic Getaway Back in Time” by Meghan Ryan Asbury and “Serenity at Cliff House, Maine” by Franco Grimaldi, both featured in this issue. I hope you have the opportunity to explore these fantastic locations that we were fortunate enough to experience.
The memories that connect us with friends and family in picturesque settings, with blue skies overhead, will last a lifetime. We are grateful for the opportunity to soak up all the beauty and love that life has to offer. Until we meet again, Ogunquit, Maine.
To life!

IN THIS ISSUE, WE ASKED THE CREATIVES: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VACATION DESTINATION AND WHY? WHAT IS A PLACE YOU’VE YET TO VISIT BUT DREAM OF GOING TO?
Art Director @jackirkendall
Amsterdam has absolutely been my favorite vacation destination so far. It had a calm, romantic vibe but still had an energetic feeling at night that created a good balance. It was truly beautiful, and the people were very nice, open-minded, and accepting, which created a welcoming environment. Somewhere I’ve yet to visit but have always dreamed of going to is Greece. I’ve wanted to travel to the islands there since I was younger. I’m really hoping I can experience Athens and island hop along the blue waters for the first time soon.
CAROLYN O’NEIL
Writer, “London Now” @carolynoneil
London is my favorite place to visit, and I’d hop the pond to see this exciting city any time of year to enjoy some of the best cuisine in the world in a city dotted with quiet gardens and filled with locals who have a super sense of humor! I’m dreaming of going on an African safari to experience the beauty and balance of nature in the wild. Of course, I’d pick a luxury safari where sunsets are served with chilled champagne.
Photographer, “Aloha: A Week in Hawaii” @skeed0_
I’ve been visiting Mozambique since I was two, and it remains one of my favorite countries. Its crystal-clear waters, towering coconut palms, freshly caught seafood, and the most friendly and generous locals have deeply impacted me. Many have just a reed hut for a house, meticulously raked
sand for a garden, and coconuts for sustenance, but more joy and contentment than almost 90 percent of people I know. A dream destination I’ve yet to visit is Micronesia. Scattered across the Western Pacific, its atolls are the picture of tropical perfection. From vibrant reefs to dramatic mountain views and thriving mangrove ecosystems, I imagine it to be an idyllic surfer’s paradise. One day, I hope to film surfers on those waves and, of course, surf them myself!
IT’S A PLACE WHERE EVERY DETAIL INVITES OBSERVATION, AND EVERY FRAME TELLS A SUBTLE STORY.
MICHAEL CHINNICI
Photographer, “Vanishing Cuba” @michaelchinnici
My family roots are Italian. Italy is a place of passion, history, and beauty in motion. From ancient ruins to coastal cliffs, every scene feels timeless. Life there is rich with flavor, art, and warmth. Whether exploring cities or the countryside, Italy captivates the senses and leaves a lasting imprint on the heart. I must visit Japan, where I believe I’ll find a sense of tradition and modernity with grace. Its quiet beauty, from misty temples to neon streets, inspires thoughtful photography. Portraits, street scenes, and minimalist moments reveal deep emotion and elegance. It’s a place where every detail invites observation, and every frame tells a subtle story.

e all long from time to time to get away from our overflowing email inboxes, the hustle and bustle of traffic, responsibilities, never-ending to-do lists, and the noise and notifications. Unfortunately, sometimes, the places we escape to don’t provide the rest we crave. Packed itineraries and crowded hotels and destinations can cause more stress. For those seeking true respite and connection with nature in a picturesque New England setting, The Dunes on the Waterfront in Ogunquit, Maine, is the getaway location you need.
While researching places to stay for my cousin’s wedding in nearby Cape Neddick, my family stumbled upon The Dunes and immediately felt a sense of comfort that told us this was the place.
As we drove onto the property on a sunny October afternoon, we were captivated by the bright autumn leaves at their peak, courtesy of the beautiful trees lining the entire driveway. The view of the Ogunquit River running alongside the dunes and ocean, coupled with quaint white cottages, greeted us with an invitation to relax. My heart rate slowed to a more peaceful pace as soon as we arrived.
It felt like I had stepped into the fictional, idyllic vacation spots from my favorite summer novels. If you’re a fan of authors Emily Henry, Nicholas Sparks, and Elin Hilderbrand or television series like The Summer I Turned Pretty and even Outer Banks, you will love The Dunes on the Waterfront. From the flower-lined cottages to the beach cruiser bikes with woven baskets, heated pool with yellowcushioned lounge chairs and umbrellas, and views of the dunes, it was all so picturesque, we could hardly believe it. No one could be in a bad mood here.
Being at The Dunes also reminded me of my childhood. I grew up in a small coastal town in the Florida Panhandle that once wasn’t tainted by rowdy spring breakers, traffic, and overpriced ice cream cones. It wasn’t so different from the one my dad grew up in, just a few hours from The Dunes in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Arriving in Ogunquit beckoned me back to those days of riding bikes to the beach to boogie board in the Gulf or jumping off the Bluefish River Bridge in the
summer while visiting my grandparents—the same bridge my dad and his siblings used to take turns jumping off when they were kids.
The freedom of summer lingered even into the fall.
The details of a stay at The Dunes are unmatched. The friendly and helpful staff go above and beyond to make sure guests feel at home and at ease. Each morning, we opened our door to a picnic basket of freshly made local coffee, tea, and pastries with a copy of the local newspaper. With nowhere to rush off to, we got to slowly enjoy our breakfast on the screened-in porch as the sun rose, listening to the ocean waves and autumn breeze through the leaves. It felt like we stepped back into a simpler era, where
“ It FELT LIKE we STEPPED BACK into a SIMPLER ERA, WHERE we COULD EMBRACE the MOMENT WITHOUT REACHING for OUR PHONES...”
“EACH HAS its OWN NAME and UNIQUE CHARM, DECORATED with an ELEVATED NEW ENGLAND COASTAL CORE LOOK.”
we could embrace the moment without reaching for our phones or wishing we were somewhere else. It was what vacations were always supposed to be.
While there are twenty-one cottages on the property, they are spread out enough that you aren’t at an overcrowded resort while close enough that you get an intimate community feel. Each has its own name and unique charm. The bedrooms are spacious and inviting, and individual bathrooms are even stocked with Santal 33 products, while the living areas, kitchens, and porches give you the space to gather. No details are left undone. Each cottage is decorated with an elevated
New England coastal core look. Our cottage, “Poppy,” came decked with greenand-white striped bedding, tastefully done shiplap, scalloped side tables, and raffia shades. It was the picture-perfect summer home of my dreams.
An easy drive down Route 1 from Portland, The Dunes is minutes from the charming Ogunquit downtown and a short trip to many beautiful towns in Maine, including Kennebunkport, Cape Neddick, and more. Most mornings, we took a jog through downtown onto Marginal Way, a paved trail that curves along the oceanfront, where we basked in the sun as we weaved into Perkins Cove and onto the beach.
Upon our return, we’d stop by The Lodge at The Dunes for freshly made smoothies, where we got to chat with the staff about the eighty-eight years of history and the upgrades that had been made since hotelier Tim Harrington purchased the property in 2023. It was amazing to hear stories from staff who had been there through the transition of ownership and how excited they were about the families who continue to return each season to make lifelong memories. Sometimes, change is hard to embrace, especially when changing to something more “upscale,” because it often takes away from the charm that makes you want to keep coming back in the first place. But in this case, The Dunes has only become more of the quintessential northeastern vacation
destination thanks to Harrington’s guidance and the beautiful work of lead designers Krista Stokes and Mark Cotto.
Embracing that charm led to my dad and his sisters sharing stories from their childhood vacations. They argued over details they remembered differently and laughed while recalling things my grandfather used to say. Being on the New England coast together brought them back to their roots, and in a way, it brought me back to mine.
Each day, we explored the nearby towns. We consumed as much lobster and as many fresh oysters as we could find (The Maine Catch and CREW were two of our favorite eateries close by). There was no shortage of unique shops in which to get lost hunting for the perfect souvenirs. Each evening, we watched the sun go down over the dunes while enjoying a bonfire setup with ingredients for s’mores and a bottle of rosé. During high tide, we were chartered to the beach along the river on The Dunes Cabana Boat. And in the summer, you can find fellow guests slowly kayaking along the river. The activities offered are perfect for a family-friendly vacation experience.

he outboard motor of the Cabana Boat purred as we glided south down the Ogunquit River. It was a brisk, sunny day with a light wind, but the barrier dune that flanked us to the east kept the water surface from getting too choppy. The pontoon hull easily dispatched any roughness on the water, making for a smooth ride. At the helm was the capable and experienced Captain Laura Rose, exuding a reassuring, calm confidence. While en route, Captain Rose highlighted some interesting landmarks and wildlife.
The Ogunquit River is a tidal river that plays a significant role in shaping the natural and geographical landscapes of Ogunquit, Maine, contributing significantly to its unique character and offering a variety of ecological and recreational opportunities. The river originates from inland freshwater sources and eventually empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The river’s estuarine environment supports extensive salt marshes, which are vital ecosystems for numerous bird species, fish, and other animals. As the river approaches the ocean, it flows south to the Atlantic Ocean between the marshy mainland and Ogunquit Beach—a three-and-a-half-mile stretch of sandy beach famous for its fine light sand and gentle slope, making it one of the most popular beaches in Maine. The Dunes on the Waterfront is ideally located midway along Ogunquit Beach, on the landward side of the river.
Within five minutes, the first waypoint of our excursion—the Beach Street bridge at historic Ogunquit—was in clear view. Captain Rose adeptly and gently navigated the boat under the bridge to the seaward side for an expansive, uninterrupted view of the river mouth. While soaking in the vibrant coastal scenery, we were captivated by Captain Rose’s story of raising her family in Ogunquit as a boat captain and, for the last quarter century, founding and operating a seafood restaurant with her sons that has become one of the town’s most popular and charming dining destinations.
After ten minutes, we were again underway, heading back toward the resort for a beachside stop before the tour ended. This time, hugging the landward marshes for a different experience. The tide was still high, which allowed us to experience the river in all its glory. The river is heavily influenced by ocean
tides, leading to significant changes in water levels and causing extreme shifts in its ecological character throughout the day. That’s why it is essential for the guests at The Dunes on the Waterfront resort to plan their beach outings. When the tide is out, the water is not deep enough for the Cabana Boat to ferry the guests back and forth, and the only way to return to the resort is by way of the public footbridge toward the marshy north end of the river, which can be time-consuming.
By the end of our almost hour-long tour, it was clear that Captain Rose could conduct these trips with her eyes closed. Nevertheless, despite the seemingly routine nature of the excursion, she remained focused on the present, dedicating her full attention to the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of her passengers. Her joyful commitment to her job reflects a rare respect for one’s profession in today’s world.
A stay at The Dunes on the Waterfront presents a fantastic opportunity to immerse oneself in the beauty of the river and its environs, so during your visit, we highly recommend exploring the beautiful Ogunquit River. For those who prefer to explore independently, The Dunes offers watercraft rentals, allowing guests to navigate the river at their own pace and discover its secrets. And don’t forget to stop by the Rose Cove restaurant for a memorable dining experience. The restaurant’s culinary delights and idyllic sidewalk café setting create an unforgettable dining experience!
The former World Woods Golf Club always stood out to me for its enchanting setting and dramatic elevation changes unlike anything I’d ever seen across Florida.

The horizon glowed with the promise of the sun soon rising into view.
symphony of stars still twinkled brilliantly in the deep indigo sky, blanketing the inky black sea alive with motion barely visible in the dim light. It was a magnificent sight that beckoned to be explored more completely. I cracked the sliding glass door and felt the cool, brisk air, but it was still pleasant. Stepping onto the balcony, I was engulfed by the coastal sounds and scents that invigorated my senses. Our corner suite was so close to the cliff that it felt like being at the bow of a ship in the middle of the Atlantic. The golden hue of dawn was becoming more prominent, signaling the impending sunrise. Somewhere between the crashing surf and the calls of seagulls overhead, the distant barks and honks of gray and harbor seals were faintly audible, their heads just visible in the pale light, bobbing like footballs in the choppy water. Without any fanfare, the sun silently burst into view, unveiling one of the most spectacular sunrises I have ever witnessed. The cliffs were coming to life!

or those who have experienced the magic of Scenic Highway 30-A in Northwest Florida, the allure is undeniable—winding pathways, emerald Gulf waters, and architecture that evokes the romance of a European seaside retreat, a Bermudan escape, or an island getaway. Yet, beyond the postcard-perfect scenery lies something even more exceptional: a level of hospitality that transforms a vacation into something deeply personal. At the heart of this experience is The All Seasons Collection 30A, a boutique property management company that, for fifteen years, has set a high standard for luxury rental services along 30-A’s east end.
Founded by Cheryl Moodie, a hospitality industry luminary with over three decades of experience, The All Seasons Collection 30A is more than just a management company—it is a concierge-style service rooted in excellence, exclusivity, and an unwavering commitment to homeowners and guests alike.
Cheryl’s journey to creating this refined approach to vacation rental management began with The RitzCarlton Hotel Company, where she was among the pioneering team members who shaped the brand’s legendary service philosophy. In 1993, she broke barriers as the first female General Manager in North America, a distinction that foreshadowed her ability to redefine hospitality at every turn.
Bringing this expertise to 30-A’s Rosemary Beach® community, Cheryl saw an opportunity to craft a property management experience that mirrored five-star hotel service while maintaining a boutique, community-first mindset. The key? A steadfast commitment to what she calls “Exclusively Rosemary.”
“My focus is to remain dedicated solely to this community,” Cheryl shares. “That exclusivity allows us to provide an unparalleled level of attention to our homeowners and the guests who return year after year. Every home under our management came to us through word of mouth—that speaks volumes about the trust and relationships we’ve built.”
Unlike larger vacation rental companies that prioritize volume, The All Seasons Collection 30A is designed to remain intimate, ensuring every guest and homeowner receives white-glove service. The company’s philosophy is built on four key pillars:
1. Personalized Guest Engagement
Promptly responding to inquiries within an hour to establish an immediate connection.
2. Impeccable Home Preparation
Every home is meticulously maintained, with concierge services available to create a seamless guest experience.
3. Proactive Guest Interaction
Ongoing communication throughout each stay ensures that every need is met.
4. A Memorable Farewell
Thoughtful touches and heartfelt gratitude encourage lasting connections and return visits.
This hands-on, relationship-driven model has earned The All Seasons Collection 30A the loyalty of discerning homeowners who appreciate the company’s meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to protecting and enhancing their properties.
Tim and Carrie Jackson, longtime Rosemary Beach homeowners and clients, attest to the difference: “We’ve worked with Cheryl and her team for over ten years, and she treats our home as if it were her own. Living in Rosemary, she is always on-site, ensuring every guest experience is exceptional. With her Ritz-Carlton background, Cheryl brings a level of service that sets her apart—there’s no one else we’d trust.”
During a family vacation, Cheryl and her husband, Douglas, fell in love with the area over two decades ago. They purchased a homesite and built

Palm fronds cascade over walls and stairwells while hummingbirds sip from giant blooms, butterflies take flight, and wild rosemary climbs toward the ceiling. If this sounds like a scene from a tropical oasis, it’s because Katherine Boggs’s vision was to create an escape that evokes peace, beauty, and beachside respite at the Rosemary Beach Inn.
Boggs, a mural artist based in South Walton, Florida— those familiar with the area might know her work from Borago Italian restaurant—was recently commissioned to work her magic in each of Rosemary Beach Inn’s eleven guest rooms and suites. Her paintings also spill down the stairwells, inviting guests to explore further as they head up to their rooms from the ground floor, which also houses the Summer Kitchen Café. The beautiful artistic additions to the inn are just one part of a grander renovation helmed by innkeeper Cameron Fletcher and owners Miriam and James Dillon.
“We’re so excited to have Katherine’s work at the inn to bring a fresh look and beautiful addition to our guest rooms,” Fletcher says. “It’s added a lot of personality to all eleven rooms, along with new furnishings and tile, linens, and upgraded amenities.”
BY Jordan Staggs
The recent updates were unveiled along with the murals at an Open House in late February when locals and visitors alike joined the Rosemary Beach Inn team to celebrate and tour the space. Each of the guest rooms and suites includes a smart TV with streaming apps available, complimentary Wi-Fi, Illy coffee pods with a Keurig, Rishi Tea with a Bodum kettle, a complimentary bag of Swell Snacks, a mini fridge, and Salt & Stone premium bath products. The lobby offers vending machines and a complimentary water refill station. Guests also enjoy the perks of staying in the heart of Rosemary Beach® with complimentary breakfast from the Summer Kitchen Café, access to the community fitness center and pool, and a complimentary beach chair setup on the private beach just steps from the inn.
Views abound of the Gulf and charming Main Street overlooking the Rosemary Beach Town Center, ensuring picture-perfect moments for every stay, whether it’s a summer vacation or holiday escape when the town is covered in Christmas lights.
The Dillons opened Summer Kitchen Café in Rosemary Beach in 1999, soon becoming a favorite among locals and visitors. They later purchased the iconic building known as “The Pensione” on the corner of Main Street and Water Street. It became the Rosemary Beach Inn in 2015, sitting pretty in its brick-red glory across the sweeping green lawn from the beach. Running the inn and café has truly been a family affair ever since, as their children Kaitlyn, Cameron, and Aidan have all pitched in to work in the café from a young age, growing up playing on the lawn and enjoying family bonfires on the beach in this idyllic place they all call home.
Cameron, who returned to the family business a few years ago and assumed the role of innkeeper in 2024, is especially proud and excited to usher in this new season of life for the Rosemary Beach Inn. “This has been the dream job I never knew I wanted until now,” she shares. “I love coming here every day, meeting our guests, and making sure their stay is the best it can be.”
James and Miriam share that updating the inn with modern amenities has been a great endeavor. They hope this will entice guests to stay throughout the year, including larger parties or wedding parties who might wish to rent the entire inn for the weekend.
Throughout all the recent renovations, the building has retained its charm. Its facade remains unchanged, with the striped awning and vintage “Pensione” marquee keeping the nostalgia alive. Inside the lobby, guests can peruse a selection of photos and news clippings telling the inn and café’s stories from over the years. Seating nooks and porthole-style windows in some of the guest rooms lend to its unique, small-town inn appeal, while Boggs’s artwork breathes new life into each one. Cheers to the Rosemary Beach Inn on a decade of providing beautiful stays in the heart of Rosemary Beach, and we hope to celebrate it for many years to come!

England Celebrates Jane
Austen’s 250th Birthday
Ladies in flower-trimmed bonnets, gentlemen in dress uniform—the fashionable strut their stuff on the boulevard, taking afternoon tea to wash down the healing waters, then dancing the night away in a gloriously ornate Georgian ballroom. It could only be Bath, that Regency jewel in England’s crown, as fashionable now as it was two hundred fifty years ago when Jane Austen was born.
By Anthea Gerrie
What was considered hip in 1775— the gorgeous golden stone architecture of the perfectly-proportioned circles and crescents, the happening Pump Room, the richly chandeliered Guildhall, and Assembly Rooms—remain top tourist attractions in 2025. And there’s no better time to see them this year with the biggest Jane Austen festival celebrations to be held this century. “It will be years before there’s another significant anniversary, so all the stops are being pulled out this year,” explains Dr Amy Frost, curator of the No.1 Royal Crescent museum whose own summer exhibition about Austen’s “complicated” relationship with Bath is sure to set the cat among the pigeons for the writer’s legions of international fans.
The author of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma (the origin story of the 1995 film Clueless), whose work also inspired Bridgerton, remains the city’s most famous resident. So it’s not surprising that the custom of parading its gilded streets in Regency costume lives on, like taking to the legendary baths and dressing up for the balls, which were the Regency equivalent of speed-dating, with beautiful daughters being pushed forward by helicopter parents to attract a moneyed match—or vice versa.
What is surprising is that Jane herself hated the cattle market matchmaking once she became a subject of it. She became as disillusioned over her five years in Bath as she had been thrilled and excited by earlier
visits as an impressionable young girl. The author who asked, “Who can ever tire of Bath?” would go on to write about “happy feelings of escape” after returning to the rural Hampshire of her childhood. But visitors never fail to be enchanted by the city, and a lot is going on this year. From costumed balls in May, June, September, and December to plays, concerts, and immersive exhibitions, not to mention the key events of the annual fall festival. These will include an expected three thousand locals and Austen aficionados from all over the world parading in period costumes they have bought at the Festival Fayre or made themselves.
It’s de rigueur to start any visit at the best address in Bath, a compact city that seems to have been dropped like a golden goblet into an undulating swathe of greenery in the English southwest. While the old town at the base is awash in Roman and medieval treasures, it is the elegant rim of the Royal Crescent, built as a suburb for the affluent to enjoy the fresh air and stylish living high above the huddled masses, that impresses and enchants with its enduring eighteenth-century ambiance.
From the eponymous five-star hotel—England’s most perfect urban hostelry with fine dining, lush gardens, and a dedicated spa—it’s a two-minute stroll to No.1, which recreates Regency living at its finest. In an immersive experience, characters come to life in mirrors, one family member conducting squabbles with the portrait of another across the room—and where a manuscript of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, The Watsons , will return to Bath in July for the first time since it was written in 1804.
Royal Crescent is also the place to start a walking tour like those Jules Mittra offers through his tour company, In and Beyond Bath—though to give me the best understanding of Austen’s life in the city, he drove me across town to start our walk in her beloved Sydney Gardens. This gorgeous tiered park above the Holburne Museum doubled as Lady Danbury’s home in Bridgerton . Within, it’s a jewel of an art gallery that less savvy visitors never reach.
The homes on Sydney Place are jaw-droppingly grand and reflect how much the Reverend Austen must have stretched his vicar’s salary to rent one for himself, his wife Cassandra, and their two unmarried daughters. He brought them there in 1801, feeling Bath was a better bet for the girls’ marriage prospects than quiet Hampshire.
The Austens’ first Bath home sits just off Great Pulteney Street, a beautiful boulevard to stroll towards England’s most picturesque urban bridge. Poor Sir William Pulteney—his grand thoroughfare got connected to the city by the bridge. Still, his money ran out before he could add side streets to complete a new district to rival Royal Crescent and its neighbor, the Circus, whose dimensions were influenced by the perimeter of nearby Stonehenge.
On the far side of Robert Adam’s Palladian bridge sit the baths whose healing properties were discovered and celebrated by the Romans two thousand years ago, before their lavish spa was built over by the Saxons and forgotten for centuries. Now renovated and the city’s greatest attraction, only the adjacent King’s Bath was open in the 18th century when ladies and gentlemen would immerse themselves up to the neck for hours in all their finery. After drying off, it would be afternoon tea at the Pump Room upstairs, still the place for the cheese toasties—Austen’s favorite treat—and a complete afternoon tea experience with live classical music. The Pump Room will be the scene of a September ball held at the height of the festival this year—the others take place in the fancy Guildhall, where at street level, Bath Markets offer all manner of treasures, from local cheeses to the rich Tibetan shawls hung to decorate the entrance by Olwen, who crosses the globe for them in an echo of the East India Company entrepreneurs who made their fortunes flaunted in Bath by importing exotic treasures. A fortune based on brioche was launched nearby in 1682 by Sally Lunn, inventor of the Bath bun, another of Austen’s favorite snacks— they are still baked and served daily in their thousands at the oldest house in town.
While high-speed trains connect Bath with London, it’s worth driving to make a stop halfway in Chawton, where the author’s delightful but straightforward residence shows how she lived her best life, penning her masterpieces after fulfilling her responsibilities, keeping the family’s tea, sugar, and wine orders topped up. Nearby Tylney Hall Hotel is a huge old pile which is the closest visitors are likely to get to Mr. Darcy’s Pemberley—many a wet-shirted modern-day Darcy has been spotted around the pool, and more cheese toasties feature in the tea offered as part of a package with bed, breakfast, and tickets to Jane Austen’s House.
A car also permits an en-route stop at the beautiful and historic Wiltshire village of Lacock, a scene of Pride and Prejudice filming locations, and where the fifteenth-century coaching inn, the Sign of the Angel, is an enticing place with crooked floors, beamed ceilings, deep mattresses, and views of the garden. It’s a simple but delightful contrast to the opulence of the Royal Crescent Hotel—and probably the overnight experience Jane Austen herself would have preferred.

ondon continues to top the charts as one of the most popular world destinations for travelers who seek iconic landmarks, rich history, and a vibrant city of diverse cultures and cuisines.
Whether it’s touring the Tower of London to gaze upon the glitter of the Crown Jewels, paying homage to the shopping meccas of Harrods and Liberty of London, taking in a spectacular stage performance in the West End theatre district or savoring sandwiches and scones at a lavish afternoon tea service (pinkies out!), London delivers for visitors with a myriad of interests and enthusiasms.
Top sights such as Big Ben and Westminster Abbey may be must-see stops for first visits to London, but there’s always something new for everyone, even in the most classic corners of history.
For instance, the collection of historic royal palaces is introducing fresh new exhibitions. Kensington Palace presents Dress Codes, a couture-clad history lesson with fashions worn by royals through the centuries, from Queen Victoria to Elizabeth II and Diana, the Princess of Wales. Hampton Court Palace invites kids of all ages to hop into literary history on “The Peter Rabbit Adventure” this summer.
If walking the halls of Buckingham Palace is on your royal wish list, note that it’s open for public tours from July to September.

Often, the best advice on where to go and what to see is as close as your hotel’s front desk. Only so much can be found in a guidebook, so the concierge team at The Beaumont Mayfair introduces guests to areas of the city they may not normally visit, guides them to unique experiences, and secures hard-to-get reservations at popular restaurants and shows.
Their best advice? Add a day in London to simply get lost and find hidden gems around every corner. The five-star hotel is a gem as well, a jewel box of art and architecture. Located in Central London’s posh Mayfair neighborhood, The Beaumont’s interiors—from the Magritte Bar to The Gatsby Room—are inspired by the glamour of the 1920s with an art deco modernist style designed by the late French architect Thierry Guy Despont.
A grand reopening followed a multimillion-dollar renovation during its tenth anniversary. Under the leadership of CEO Stuart Procter, the hotel continues to reveal new polish and improvements. Over 101 elegantly appointed rooms and suites are each tailored with a unique set of original prints, books, and paintings. Some rooms boast cashmere wall coverings!
Overlooking Brown Hart Gardens, the hotel’s exterior includes a two-story high semi-abstract sculpture of a crouching figure by contemporary artist Antony Gormley. The dark interior of the huge sculpture is the bedroom of ROOM, one of the hotel’s decadent suites.
Perhaps the finest view for anyone who visits The Beaumont is the parade of classic dishes on the menu at The Colony Grill. Tableside service of Dover Sole, Beef Wellington, and selections from the artisan British cheese trolley delight guests with an old-world flourish of skill and grace. For dessert, there’s a traditional sticky toffee pudding served with a thirty-year-old tawny port.
What’s next for The Beaumont? Transforming the Brown Hart Gardens space and opening Rosi, another addition to London fine dining.
Raffles London at The OWO Raffles.com/london
One of the most celebrated openings in recent years is Raffles Hotels & Resorts’ first London location in the Old War Office building known today as The OWO. The building complex was once home to legends such as Sir Winston Churchill (you can visit his former office and even snap a photo at his desk) and was frequented by Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond series of spy thrillers. It is long associated with espionage, as the British government’s M15 and M16 had operations there during the twentieth century.
Now, you can write your own London story while staying at Raffles London at the OWO in meticulously transformed rooms and suites. Perhaps kick off your adventure at the 007 Spy Bar? Even if you’re just walking by, peer through the sidewalk-level kitchen windows to wave to the brigade of chefs prepping for the hotel’s nine restaurants. They’ll wave back!
COMO Shambhala Metropolitan London

Shambhala means ‘peace’ in Sanskrit, and guests will find calm through a wide range of spa treatments complemented by COMO Shambhala Kitchen, featuring a nutrition-conscious menu of foods and drinks.
Set to open its doors in 2026, the first Waldorf Astoria hotel in London will arrive at Admiralty Arch, only steps from The Mall that leads to Buckingham Palace. Already written into the menu, two renowned chefs, with seven Michelin stars between them, Clare Smyth and Daniel Boulud, will oversee the hotel’s signature restaurants. Waldorf Astoria London Admiralty Arch, set within a historic building being restored to its former glory, will be yet another hotel jewel in the crown of the British capital.

One of Mick Jagger’s and the late Princess Diana’s favorite places to dine was Le Caprice restaurant near St. James Palace on Arlington Street. Led by famed London restauranteur Jeremy King since the 1980s, Le Caprice has now been renamed, reimagined, and reopened as The Arlington. This stylish restaurant with black and white portraits of celebrities by David Bailey creates a fashionably lively scene with a pianist every evening and a menu of past favorites and innovative tastes for today. Where’s the loo? Take a left at the photo of Michael Caine.
The Park
TheParkRestaurant.com
Also, King’s sister restaurant, The Park, was recently launched and is located opposite Kensington Gardens. Hello! Is that Cobb salad, lobster roll, and spaghetti cacio e pepe on the menu? With origins in American cuisine of the 1970s and a blend of Italian fare, The Park aims to please with seasonal fresh produce and a slice of key lime pie.
The Georgian at Harrods Harrods.com
Did someone say pie? Opened in 1911, The Georgian was the largest restaurant in London. Twinkling brightly again under a canopy of twenty-five chandeliers, The Georgian has added a flourish of tableside theater to glamorous presentations of afternoon tea and, in the evenings, features the pastry masterpieces of chef Calum Franklin, the acclaimed “pie king.” This is the spot for savory main dish pies such as chicken with tarragon and lobster with lemongrass. Again, the classics reign supreme in modern London town.
Chic Dogs, a new coffee-table book published by Assouline, offers a playful yet elegant look at the relationship between dogs and some of history’s most stylish figures. From aristocrats to modern-day influencers, dogs have always been symbols of luxury and sophistication. The book showcases iconic dog owners, including Coco Chanel with her poodle and Queen Elizabeth II with her beloved corgis. It also features figures like Maria Callas and Winston Churchill with their pups. Filled with beautiful photography, Chic Dogs captures the poise and charm of these furry companions, showcasing them as true cultural icons alongside their humans. It celebrates style, history, and the timeless bond we share with our dogs.

H (formerly Restoration Hardware) is known for creating stunning furniture and unique lifestyle experiences. With iconic pieces like The Cloud Sofa and an expansion into hospitality featuring twentytwo fine-dining restaurants across North America, the brand doesn’t adhere to the idea of what is “expected.” The most recent development in the RH design philosophy could be its most innovative yet. RH Three is a groundbreaking expedition yacht that embodies the brand’s signature style, exceptional craftsmanship, and a wide range of luxurious amenities on board.
RH THREE IS A GROUNDBREAKING EXPEDITION YACHT THAT EMBODIES THE BRAND’S SIGNATURE STYLE, EXCEPTIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND A WIDE RANGE OF LUXURIOUS AMENITIES ON BOARD.”
he thirty-nine-meter custom expedition yacht was retrofitted to accommodate eight guests. It features four separate cabins for maximized spaciousness and luxury. A one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio ensures top-class service and a highly curated experience tailored to each individual’s unique needs.
RH has expanded its hospitality portfolio in recent years, including the opening of the bespoke hotel, RH Guesthouse, in New York City, with six guest rooms, three suites, one residence, a restaurant, and the Champagne & Caviar Bar. The brand also launched private Gulfstream jets named RH One and RH Two. However, the company initially had no immediate plans to enter the yachting industry. The idea for the project was sparked by coincidence (or fate) when a Belgian designer contacted RH Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman after spotting a luxury yacht named RH3 for sale by an independent owner. After touring the boat with the design team in Sicily, RH officially acquired the yacht in 2019 and renamed it RH Three. From there, they began the necessary refurbishment to make the vessel a seamless addition to the brand.
Upon boarding, guests are welcomed into The Salon, the first of several indooroutdoor lounge and dining areas. This space showcases RH’s signature elegance, featuring champagne lacquer, wire-brushed white oak, caramel Italian leather, and charcoal performance velvet. These elements are beautifully complemented by custom lighting designed by PSLab, creating a striking contrast with the sleek metallic exterior of the space.
“THERE’S
NO BETTER WAY TO END THE EVENING THAN BY SIPPING CHAMPAGNE IN THE SUNSET TERRACE, THE YACHT’S HIGHEST POINT, WHICH OFFERS PANORAMIC VIEWS FOR SOAKING UP THE SCENERY.”
lso located on the main deck, the Primary Cabin offers a seamless transition from the sea to peaceful dreams. Floor-to-ceiling windows reflect the water onto the luminous lacquered panels overhead, and Swiss percale bedding and handwoven cashmere throws were selected for the most well-rested sleep.
Privacy was clearly considered during the refurbishment, as there are numerous spaces to retreat for a moment of solace. The Primary Cabin includes a private lounge and office area, while multiple indoor and outdoor seating areas are available for additional guests. Three more guest cabins are on the upper deck, each distinctively designed to emulate sand, sea, and sky.
First, toast to the evening on the Sunset Terrace, then tone up with the onboard fitness offerings the next morning. The outdoor gym at RH Three is situated on the upper deck and offers a wide range of fitness equipment. This includes Pent Fitness free weights and kettlebells (crafted from stainless steel and American walnut) as well as yoga mats, push-up bars, and foam rollers. When in port, private fitness classes can also be arranged. There’s no better way to end the evening than by sipping champagne in the Sunset Terrace, the yacht’s highest point, which offers panoramic views for soaking up the scenery.
Free-spirited passengers will fall in love with the bespoke expedition chase boat, a unique amenity not found on any other yacht of this size. This chase boat is just one part of RH Three’s extensive fleet, including sea bobs, paddleboards, carbon fiber kayaks, a wave runner, and water skiing and wakeboarding equipment. Of course, the entire collection is finished to match the yacht’s signature Phantom Grey and metallic champagne palette. It truly is a treasure trove of water toys waiting to be explored—and the Rolls-Royce engine in the chase boat ensures unforgettable day trips to hidden beaches along the coast.
RH Three is now available for private charter in the Mediterranean during the summer months and the Bahamas in winter. Rates begin at $150,000/week. Please contact Northrop & Johnson for all inquiries by visiting RH.com/us/en/three.

From green juices to red light therapy, there is no shortage of practices promising better health. However, wellness is not solely about adding new habits; it also requires refinement and rebalancing to achieve actual vitality.
An award-winning wellness refuge crowns the Santa Monica Mountain range, elevated not only in its location but also in its methodology. The Ranch Malibu is one of the most sought-after destinations in the world for a complete mind-body-soul reset, promoting a return to the core human needs of fulfillment, purpose, and peace.
Bespoke wellness experiences may be trending, but The Ranch has been well ahead of that curve. Since its inception in 2010, The Ranch has offered a comprehensive wellness program guided by the fundamental cornerstones of movement, connection, rest, and nature.
En route to the property, I catch glimpses of the Pacific Ocean as my driver navigates through the winding canyon roads. A discreetly marked entrance with the brand’s signature “R” emblem marks the gated entrance, where the organic garden and central ‘Ranch House’ sit just beyond.
One of the most beautiful aspects of The Ranch is its high level of customizability. Some guests arrive to work on body composition and weight loss. Others are craving a technology-free week or intentional rest from a demanding career. Some come with specific objectives, such as reducing caffeine or processed sugar intake, improving sleep quality, or building muscle. Many simply recognize that it’s time for renewal.
Unlike other wellness programs in the area, you won’t have to share accommodations with other guests or endure minimal amenities. Each guest is given a private ensuite cottage designed for comfort and relaxation. The atmosphere evoked childhood memories of summer camp but through a refined, adult perspective. Part nostalgia, part luxury, thoughtfulness touched every detail—including a framed photograph from home on my bedside table and bars of spearmint rosemary soap crafted from the on-site organic garden.
days at The Ranch begin early, following a routine that quickly becomes second nature. It starts with a 5:30 a.m. wake-up call, followed by a morning stretch in the property’s beautiful private gym. After breakfast, we prepare for a four-hour hike. Each trek is truly stunning, led by experienced guides who bring their unique blend of positivity, love for the outdoors, and extensive knowledge of the trails. The best part? We rarely encountered anyone outside our group except for the occasional mountain biker or hiker. It was just us and the breathtaking views—an experience of serene outdoor luxury.
After completing our morning activities, we would soak our feet and enjoy a nourishing lunch before planning our afternoon schedules. Our afternoons typically consisted of a sports massage alongside optional fitness and yoga classes. Many guests added various services, such as IV therapy, Wim Hof masterclasses, energy work, and the ultra-popular 100-minute massage. This sacred afternoon quickly became one of my favorite parts of the day—a blissful period to read in the sauna before taking on the cold plunge or journaling among the garden’s citrus trees.
Everyone gathered again for a family-style dinner, which was made brighter by the camaraderie and beautifully plated dishes. The menu ranged from pozole verde to zucchini soup and eggplant cannelloni, with each meal skillfully prepared by the talented kitchen staff and sourced entirely from the property’s organic garden. To close the evening, I habitually found myself sipping a cup of blue chamomile tea (here’s an insider secret: a small bowl of Ranch granola is a perfect sweet treat) before heading back to my cottage for a restful night of sleep.
By day two, our group mused over how natural this routine had become—a testament to our innate adaptability and the underlying current of transformation.
While some may feel excited by the daily challenge of a four-hour hike, early wake-up call, and general technological detox (there’s no cell service on property outside of the cottages), it’s completely understandable if that feels overwhelming. Know that your unique needs are valued, which is why there are dozens of opt-ins for your experience. Morning coffee and is available for those who wish to indulge, and two-hour hikes are offered daily as an alternative to the standard four-hour hike. For those who easily lose weight on a low-calorie diet, the kitchen happily provides larger portion sizes; similarly, they happily work to accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences, and recently added eggs as a breakfast menu option.
You can deep-dive the metrics to meet your health goals, including complimentary body composition scans and optional cholesterol testing, or focus solely on
how you want to feel. Moreover, the hikes are based on total time rather than speed, allowing you to choose your preferred pace to maximize your movement.
This commitment to customization and continuous evolution is one of the qualities that I found most endearing. Of course, The Ranch also adheres to its timeless values and signature experiences that make guests return year after year.
The Ranch offers a space for reflection and newness to come in. It’s a special type of vortex to simply lean into being in a world of doing. At home, few of us would allocate four hours to hiking, let alone reserve time to sit and contemplate our thoughts. Similarly, finding a community that encourages you to push your limits is rare. There is no judgment here—only support to help you move forward, face challenges, and listen to your body.
I travel often, and this is far from my first wellness retreat. That being said, The Ranch receives my highest recommendation and praise. Before leaving the property, I had already encouraged several friends and family members to book their stay. “You just need to come here to experience it!” I texted, alongside
stunning photos from the daily hikes, vibrant meals, and immaculately kept property.
I met several returning guests during my stay, which further highlighted The Ranch’s appeal. This clientele can travel anywhere in the world, many frequently visiting five-star luxury resorts, yet they choose to repeatedly return to The Ranch. Why? Its exclusive location is the epitome of privacy, offering all the proper support to disconnect and experience mind-body-soul rejuvenation. The exceptional staff, who quickly feel like family, breathtaking hikes, stunning property, and results-oriented programming all contribute to its allure.
Looking back, my time at The Ranch was one of the best decisions I’ve made for myself. In a world where life’s pace moves quicker than ever, it’s essential to carve out time to pause and reset. Be willing to deviate from your standard routine, embrace challenges, and surrender to slow moments. If you arrive with an open mind, you’ll leave feeling restored with a renewed sense of balance and the quiet luxury of feeling whole.
Reclaim your well-being at The Ranch Malibu, an award-winning, results-driven retreat designed for those seeking lasting transformation in the breathtaking setting of the Santa Monica Mountains. The Ranch’s Signature Program begins at $9,200 for a 6-night, 7-day Signature Stay. For more information and to book your stay, please visit TheRanchLife.com. Here you can also find information about the brand’s New York retreat, The Ranch Hudson Valley.
A special thank you to all the staff who made this experience so exceptional: Bobby, Vinny, Zion, Nikki, Rika, Allyson, Melissa, and the entire team!

Laguna Beach feels like a time capsule, exuding the charm of small-town living. Only a 90-minute drive from Los Angeles, it serves as the perfect weekend retreat or makes for a delightful stop on a romantic drive down the coast toward San Diego.
Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach is a historic getaway for Hollywood stars and filmmakers. Since it opened in 1948, the resort has welcomed many notable personalities. During the 1970s, when President Richard Nixon visited his home in San Clemente, the White House Press Corps stayed at Surf & Sand. Reporters conducted interviews with the President on what is now known as the Bella Vista Terrace, just steps away from the beach.
Seventy-five years later, the resort has undergone an extensive renovation to enhance the guest experience in line with modern luxury. Upon arrival,
“LUXURY can be EXPERIENCED in EVERY DETAIL, FROM the HERRINGBONE FLOORING to the SPACIOUS BATHROOM FEATURING a STONE-CLAD SHOWER and FULL-SIZE SOAKING TUB OVERLOOKING the OCEAN THROUGH SLIDING PRIVACY DOORS.”
guests are instantly greeted by the shimmering surface of the Pacific Ocean visible through the lobby, which features an inviting seating area and a spacious balcony. Just a few moments later, I find myself several stories up, delighted by the breathtaking view of the waves seen through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors that lead to a private balcony. A minimalist color palette beautifully complements the view, creating an inviting extension of the outdoors.
Luxury can be experienced in every detail, from the herringbone flooring to the spacious bathroom featuring a stone-clad shower and full-size soaking tub overlooking the ocean through sliding privacy doors. The layout was intentionally designed to create memorable moments, especially by encouraging guests to step outside to enjoy the views from the balcony or to admire the waves upon waking in the morning.
Early risers are almost guaranteed to see surfers and sailboats in the distance, accompanied by a plethora of marine life, including dolphins, seals, pelicans, and even the occasional gray whale during migration season, which runs from
December to April. Surf & Sand also owns a private stretch of beach exclusive to resort guests, perfect for enjoying warm days in the sun. Surfing lessons are available upon request.
The resort most recently unveiled updated guest rooms in the Seaview and Towers buildings and the on-site restaurant, Splashes. Located on the first floor of the
hotel, just steps above the coastline, this intimate dining experience is a must during your stay in Laguna Beach. Be sure to reserve a table on the outdoor terrace to revel in storybook sunsets, which paint the horizon in beautiful, dreamy hues.
Each plate draws upon seaside influences, creatively reimagined through innovative culinary techniques under the guidance of Chef Ron Fougeray. The entire

waitstaff was accommodating and detail-oriented, and my server, Patrick, was exceptionally personable and attentive. These factors demonstrate that Splashes is not merely a hotel restaurant; it stands out as its own unique entity, attracting a loyal following of locals, oenophiles, and foodies.
Other exciting additions include the reopening of the Aquaterra Spa and the brand-new Coastline Café, which will offer hand-crafted cocktails and coffee drinks. While these amenities make it hard to leave the property, you’re just a short stroll away from some of the best cafés and shopping in Laguna Beach. Renowned hat artist Teressa Foglia’s shop is located directly across the street, and other favorites like Bear Coast Coffee and Rye Goods bakery are almost necessities with exceptional offerings and friendly staff. You’ll wander past numerous ice cream shops, swimwear stores, specialty boutiques, and barefooted local kids heading to the beach with surfboards in hand.
If a drive down the California coast is calling your name, be sure to include Surf & Sand in your itinerary. Within minutes, guests can easily access beautiful hiking trails, the Pacific Ocean, and downtown Laguna Beach. The location is also ideal for further exploration, as it is close to Dana Point, Newport Beach, and San Clemente.
As time ticks on and the tides turn, the soul of this Laguna Beach legend remains. The next wave is here—refined, reimagined, and eager to build upon a legacy of seaside luxury.

rowing up in South Africa, Hawaii was one of those far-off places that seemed a world away to me—a paradise I could do little more than dream about. I’d been privileged to travel around South Africa and its neighboring countries, but Hawaii was a destination in a league of its own. I had heard so much about the peeling waves, the picturesque landscape, and the local culture. It became a bucket-list trip for me, and to say I was excited to finally visit this year would be an understatement of epic proportions.
My mother is American, and we visit my extended family in the US occasionally. We spent the Christmas holidays in 2024 with my grandparents, longtime residents of Florida in the coastal area known as 30-A. It’s incredible how much more accessible my Hawaii dream felt when I was on American soil, and through a remarkable series of events, my dream came true. As an eighteen-year-old surfer and aspiring cinematographer fresh out of high school, I boarded a plane for Maui armed with a deep quest for adventure, an arsenal of digital, film, and video cameras, and my currency: a genuine love for people and a strong ambition to pursue film and cinematography.
Every day during the trip, I was treated to a different part of the island. From Hana to Haiku, Black Rock Beach to Molokini, and Honolua Bay to Haleakalā, I discovered backyard waterfalls, swam with dolphins, and trekked through rainforests.
A fisherman casts his line into the deep blue Hawaiian sea, his movement steady against the rugged lava rocks. A young figure stands nearby, soaking in the peaceful rhythm of the scene. Fittingly, since we were at Kiawe Beach, a Hawaiian Kiawe tree (thorn tree) stretched its branches toward the horizon, framing the tranquil view.
Left: The image captures a striking contrast between the endless sapphire water and the expansive sky, interrupted by the sunlit outcrop of the south side of Molokini Crater. Shades of yellow, brown, and white layer the rock face, each striation telling a story of time and transformation. Within the stone, natural leading lines draw the eye downward, guiding it back toward the ocean—where the crater’s ancient past meets the ever-moving present.
Right: Shot on analog film using Cinestill 400D, I was drawn to the silhouettes and the way the orange halation would play off the late afternoon light. In this frame, wispy clouds brush across the summit of Haleakalā while lava rocks break through the shimmering Pacific below. Palm trees sway over lush flora, framing a quiet and dreamy beachfront residence. It felt like a scene that captured so many of the elements that define Hawaii—pristine water, huge mountains, palm trees, and vibrant flowering plants.
Left: Taken at Kiawe Beach, this photo captures a young family of three boys and, with them, a quiet reminder of the simpler things in life. A child climbs a twisted Kiawe branch, reaching for a new perspective, while just below, someone sways gently in a hammock, the ocean breeze brushing past. There’s something timeless in scenes like this— moments that call us back to curiosity, play, and the joy of exploring the world with those we love. It’s about never losing the childlike urge to climb higher and see the world differently.
Right: Snapped from a moving car window along the legendary Road to Hana, this shot came together in a split second. As the dense jungle gave way to a break in the trees, the waterfall revealed itself—framed perfectly by the lush Hawaiian foliage above and below. The leaves in the foreground and canopy above act as natural leading lines, all drawing the eye inward toward the falling water. It was one of those fleeting moments where preparation met instinct—and Hawaii delivered.
Left: Shot at Black Sand Beach, this image caught my eye because of the strong contrast between the two palms standing tall amid dense foliage and the ocean stretching endlessly behind them. The monochrome treatment strips away distraction and emphasizes shape, texture, and balance— the jagged volcanic rock, the delicate fronds, and the soft blanket of coastal flora. These two trees felt like sentinels, rooted in place, watching the everchanging sea.
Right: This tree immediately caught my eye—stripped of bark, its surface was almost sculptural. I wanted a backdrop that would echo that smoothness and let the form of the tree speak for itself, so I framed it against the sky. The result was this dramatic silhouette, a dance of shadows and shape. The branching lines seem to fracture the image, like veins or lightning, there’s something visceral about them. They sprawl and fork unpredictably, like nature’s own calligraphy etched against the sky. They become even more abstract in black and white—less tree and more symbol—while the smooth trunk anchors everything in a quiet strength.
Left: This photo was very special to me. It was one I felt captured Hawaii in all its beauty, with breathtaking sunsets overlooking the Pacific Ocean and no other land in sight for many miles. I almost felt like I was at the edge of the world. Looking up from the path and seeing the way the branches and leaves curved just right, I remember thinking, “Well, nature has created a picture frame.” Just as that happened, a wave rolled through, perfectly positioned in the center of it all.
Right: This photo was taken during a turtle snorkeling trip. We watched these turtles dive deep and then slowly, effortlessly, rise back up to the surface for air. I wanted to capture that floating sensation—that weightless moment— so I positioned myself beneath them, looking up as they glided toward the light. The way they moved through the water felt almost like a mirage, suspended in blue, with soft light rippling above and the texture of the ocean floor falling away below.
It was the perfect mix of everything I love—making new friends, experiencing different cultures, surfing waves I’d seen in just about every surf film, and documenting the week in my own

INTERVIEW BY JORDAN STAGGS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL CHINNICI
ichael Chinnici, a visual artist born in Brooklyn, New York, in the late 1950s, grew up in a creatively rich environment. His mother was a talented artist, sculptor, and painter, while his father was a jeweler who designed and crafted fine pieces, had a passion for carpentry and woodworking, and enjoyed photography. These artistic interests greatly influenced Michael from a young age as he explored various creative endeavors throughout his childhood. He painted, designed and built custom guitars, customized cars, rebuilt engines, and played in rock bands, among other hobbies.
“My love for photography began at age eleven in the basement darkroom of my parents’ house,” he recalls. “I was fortunate to have access to my father’s Nikon cameras, which allowed me to explore the craft from an early age. However, instead of pursuing photography as a profession right away, I chose to follow a creative path in design, advertising, and marketing.”
While pursuing his university education in design and advertising with photography as a minor, Chinnici says he hoped to be a creative director in
an ad agency, with photography as a personal passion rather than a profession. By the age of twenty-two, he established his first design studio, which evolved into a full-service ad agency by the time he turned thirty. At thirty-seven, he launched Icon Digital, New York’s first digital photo studio, as a natural extension of his creative ventures. “The ad agency had grown to about sixty employees when I sold it in 2000 to pursue photography and photo-centric travel,” Chinnici shares.
That’s when his hobby evolved into a creative career designed around pursuing his passion and telling unique stories. “This evolution wasn’t something I mapped out from the beginning, but photography was always there, waiting for the right moment to take center stage in my life. Now, it’s at the heart of everything I do— whether through capturing powerful visual stories, curating books, or leading photography adventures around the world.”
We were thrilled to learn about Chinnici’s stunning new photography book, Vanishing Cuba, and to catch up with him to talk about its origins, his vision, and where he hopes to travel next.
VIE : HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY? WHAT DRAWS YOU TO THIS TYPE OF WORK?
MICHAEL CHINNICI: I’ve explored and studied many forms of photography, never confining myself to just one—whether it’s street, commercial, studio, landscape, or photojournalism. A camera is simply a tool, and while mastering every genre is nearly impossible, I believe in pushing creative boundaries and embracing a diverse approach.
At the heart of my photography is storytelling and emotion. The most powerful images evoke a feeling and speak for themselves. A strong sense of aesthetics is equally essential—simplicity, balance, and intention all play a role in creating compelling photographs.
I’m particularly drawn to documentary photography and environmental portraits, where storytelling takes center stage. While a backstory can enhance an image, the best photographs don’t need words to convey their message. While I appreciate the beauty of landscapes, sunrises, and sunsets, they often lack a unique narrative. These scenes are captured endlessly and can be replicated by anyone standing in the same spot. However, a documentary image—like that of a seventh-generation Icelandic rancher tending to his horses—tells a deeper, more personal story that can’t easily be repeated. It’s these moments, rich with authenticity and meaning, that truly inspire my work.
VIE : WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR GORGEOUS NEW BOOK, VANISHING CUBA?
MC: First, thank you for the kind words! For years, people encouraged me to create a book on Cuba, but my response was always the same: “When I find a
few free months.” If it hadn’t been for the unexpected downtime during COVID, Vanishing Cuba might have remained just an idea for several more years.
One day, I finally decided to take a serious look at the project. I spent the next month reviewing thousands of images from my twenty-four trips to Cuba (a number that has now exceeded forty). As I curated the photos, revisited my notes, and relived the stories behind each moment, I began to see the book take shape in my mind. That was it—I was committed. “When do we print?” I joked.
Of course, the journey was just beginning. Having never published a book before, I soon realized the immense challenge ahead—figuring out how to bring this vision to life. It was a learning experience, but one I embraced wholeheartedly.
VIE : HOW DID YOU TEAM UP WITH RED OCTOPUS PUBLISHING AND DECIDE TO CREATE MULTIPLE EDITIONS?
MC: I never intended to work with a traditional publisher. Maintaining complete creative control was essential to me, and no publisher would have invested the level of resources I did to produce Vanishing Cuba. Publishers follow a formula, and their budgets would have been significantly lower than what I envisioned for this project. In that sense, Vanishing Cuba became a passion project rather than a commercial venture.
The book is entirely self-published, and partnering with Red Octopus Publishing was a natural fit—because I created it. I took my marketing consulting company, Red Octopus, and expanded it into a publishing division. It made far more sense to publish under this brand than my name.
As for creating multiple editions—why not? With my background in the print industry from my ad agency days, I knew we could produce different editions while making the numbers work.
• The Silver Edition is the standard version—though nothing about it is standard. It’s a high-quality production with no expense spared, made possible by printing in larger quantities to keep costs manageable.
• The Deluxe Edition is a slipcased, signed, and numbered edition, limited to 500 copies. It’s an elegant collector’s piece and makes an impressive gift.
• The Reserve Edition is the ultimate collector’s edition, produced in limited numbers. It features a unique book design, a handcrafted clamshell box, three signed and numbered prints, and a certificate of authenticity—every detail is meticulously crafted.
What truly sets Vanishing Cuba apart is the printing process. This is not a standard four-color, six-color, or digitally printed book. It’s an eleven-color masterpiece, offset printed on ultra-high-quality Italian paper using stochastic separations.
That’s why the Silver Edition weighs nine pounds and the Reserve Edition eleven pounds. It’s one of the most exquisitely printed photography books ever produced. You can read more about the printing process on VanishingCuba.com.
VIE : YOU HAVE TRAVELED THE WORLD, CAPTURING IT THROUGH YOUR LENS. WHAT MAKES CUBA SO UNIQUE?
MC: Cuba’s decades of isolation have made it truly unique—a place that once felt like an absolute time warp. Though that is gradually changing, the essence of Vanishing Cuba lies in capturing what remains of this fading world.
What sets Cuba apart most, in my eyes, is its people and culture. There’s something incredibly special about Cubans—kind, generous, unassuming, and refreshingly authentic. They are open to having their lives documented in a way that is rare, especially in today’s modernized world. While you often find this openness in poorer societies, Cuba is different because its people are remarkably intelligent and well-educated.
Beyond the people, Cuba offers a visual feast unlike any other. Its stunning yet crumbling architecture, iconic classic American cars—many held together by ingenuity alone—outdated manufacturing techniques, and an old-world service industry all create photographic opportunities that simply don’t exist anywhere else.
VIE: HOW DOES IT FEEL WHEN YOU SEE YOUR WORK OR BOOK DISPLAYED IN SOMEONE’S HOME?
MC: Seeing my work displayed in someone’s home or office is an incredible feeling. I love it when people send me photos of Vanishing Cuba in their spaces. It’s a deeply personal book, filled with passion and a piece of my life, so knowing it resonates with others in such a meaningful way is truly rewarding.
Many have told me that after reading and viewing the book, they feel as if they’ve traveled to Cuba themselves. One recent comment that stood out was, “The pictures are marvelous, and in many cases, it feels as though you can walk right into them.”
Perhaps the most powerful responses have come from Cubans and Cuban exiles. Some have cried with joy, telling me I made their country look and feel more beautiful than they ever realized. Others have been moved to tears by its raw authenticity. A Cuban friend once told me, “Michael, I walk these streets every day, but I’ve learned to tune it all out. You opened my eyes to a sadness I try to forget.” Moments like these remind me of the profound power of photography—to capture, to reveal, and to stir deep emotions in ways words sometimes cannot.
The launch of Vanishing Cuba was met with incredible excitement—from the photography community, my peers, and friends around the world. To date, more than thirty-five articles have been written about the book, and it has been added to the library collections of every Ivy League university and many of the world’s
most prestigious libraries, including Oxford, Cambridge, The Getty Center, and more. Sales have exceeded expectations, and we anticipate selling out within the next year.
Holding the book in my hands is always a special experience. I hand-assemble the Reserve Edition collector’s books. I personally handle the prints, sign and seal the certificates of authenticity, and prepare each edition with care. Because of this, I interact with the book often, yet I have yet to sit down and re-read it from start to finish since it first came off the press. One day soon, I’ll revisit it with fresh eyes.
VIE : HOW DO YOU THINK PHOTOGRAPHY TELLS STORIES IN A DIFFERENT WAY THAN PAINTING, DRAWING, OR VIDEO? WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT TELLING STORIES THIS WAY?
MC: A photograph is a raw, frozen moment in time—captured with authenticity, whether on film or digitally. It preserves reality in a way that no other medium can, allowing the viewer to step into a fleeting instant and experience it as it was.
A painting or drawing, while also a still image, is an interpretation of reality shaped entirely by the artist’s vision. They allow for vast creative freedom—exaggeration, simplification, or even complete reinvention of the subject matter. Video, on the other hand, is a completely different storytelling medium. It unfolds over time, providing a fuller, more immersive narrative. It engages the senses differently, incorporating movement, sound, and pacing, which adds to its entertainment value and depth.
What I love about photography is its honesty. In Vanishing Cuba, every image is authentic—none are manipulated. The only adjustments made are the standard enhancements in Lightroom, as any professional photographer would do in the editing process. There’s only one photo in the entire book taken with a strobe flash. Everything else is captured as it was, in natural light, preserving the truth of the moment. That’s the power of photography—it doesn’t just tell a story; it freezes reality, allowing it to be relived again and again.
VIE: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE VISITING CUBA FOR THE FIRST TIME?
MC: Keep an open mind and embrace the experience—it’s unlike anywhere else you’ve ever been. Visiting Cuba is more than just a trip; it’s an adventure, full of unexpected moments that make it both challenging and unforgettable. Things don’t always run smoothly—power outages, transportation delays, or limited resources can happen—but that’s all part of the authentic Cuban experience. If you go with the right mindset, you’ll find beauty in the imperfections and appreciate the resilience, warmth, and ingenuity of the Cuban people.
If you’re an American traveler, be sure to follow the U.S. Treasury Department’s OFAC regulations for legal travel to Cuba. It’s a common misconception that travel there is complicated or restricted, but as long as you comply with the
guidelines, you’ll be just fine. Many also assume Cuba is dangerous, but in reality, it’s one of the safest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Violent crime is rare, and visitors often remark on how safe they feel walking the streets, even at night.
To make the most of your visit, immerse yourself in the culture. Stay in casas particulares (private homes) instead of hotels, engage with locals, and explore beyond Havana—there’s so much more to Cuba than its capital. Be present, embrace the slower pace of life, and let Cuba reveal itself to you in its own unique way.
MC: I’m currently working on my next book, though I haven’t officially announced the details yet. The early phases of book creation—curating, editing, and designing—are just as exciting as they are challenging. It’s a meticulous
process, but one that I truly enjoy as I shape the visual storytelling into something meaningful.
On the travel front, I have several incredible photography adventures lined up. In addition to leading workshops in Italy and across Europe, I’ll be traveling to Romania, Angola, Rajasthan (India), and the Azores. And, of course, I’ll be returning to Cuba multiple times throughout the year. If you’ve ever wanted to experience these destinations through a photographer’s lens, I’d love for you to join me on one of these journeys!

WHILE TRENDS COME and GO ALONG FLORIDA’S SCENIC HIGHWAY 30-A, TRATTORIA BORAGO has SPENT an IMPRESSIVE NUMBER of YEARS DOING ONE THING EXCEPTIONALLY WELL: FEEDING PEOPLE LIKE FAMILY. SOME RESTAURANTS BECOME LOCAL FAVORITES THANKS to THEIR DESIGN, THEIR MENU, or VIBE; BORAGO is a RARE BLEND of ALL THREE.
Tucked into the heart of Grayton Beach, this culinary hot spot is marking its twenty-fifth anniversary of offering guests consistently good cuisine and growing deep roots running through the local community and beyond.
Since its opening in March 2000, Borago has been ideal for enjoying date nights, family gatherings, and apéritifs. The soft glow of the lights and the buzz of patrons at the bar create an unassuming charm complemented by the true mastery happening in the kitchen. With a menu including specialty cocktails, appetizers, pasta, and entrées (plus an ever-iconic off-menu item regulars swear by), there’s a reason diners return time after time. With favorites like three-meat bolognese with cheese tortelloni, wild mushroom ravioli, veal meatballs, fresh grouper
Niçoise, and pan-seared scallops, every dish feels like it was made for a Sunday table—wholesome, satisfying, and shared with love.
The restaurant itself can’t receive all the praise, though. The institution’s heart comes from its founders: current chef/owner Michael Dragon and the late Chef Mark Anton. The VIE team had the privilege of dining there recently and chatting with Chef Dragon about the establishment’s past, present, and future. He credits a lot of the success to Borago’s incredible staff and their innate ability to treat patrons like family. While his vision for the future of Borago is everevolving, he noticeably kept Chef Anton frontof-mind with every word. The plaque honoring the late co-owner stands glimmering and proud just beside the restaurant’s front entrance.
As they enter the restaurant, guests are met with the moody and intimate bar, which emits an inviting hum. Beyond, the main dining room opens up to a
“WHILE HIS VISION for the FUTURE of BORAGO is EVER-EVOLVING, HE NOTICEABLY KEPT CHEF ANTON FRONT-OF-MIND with EVERY WORD.

welcoming area fit for a familiar meal. With its soft lighting, big windows, and intricate murals by local artist Katherine Boggs, the restaurant balances upscale and casual with all the mastery of a familystyle trattoria. The front of the kitchen is partially visible beyond a pony wall decorated in Italianinspired tiling, creating a warm, homey vibe that evokes the heart of Italy.
In a world where plenty of restaurants come and go, Borago’s roots have been firmly planted in the 30-A restaurant community. It has remained essential to Grayton Beach for twenty-five years—even surviving a fire that displaced the restaurant to a couple of temporary locations in the 2010s. Locals rejoiced when it returned to its villa-style home fronting the scenic highway and bike path. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why dining out, trying new foods, and finding community is so magical. Cheers to a quarter century of Borago and all the appetites and hearts it has fed. The next chapter is sure to be just as delicious!

INFLUENCES FROM THE TUSCAN FARMLAND AND SICILIAN SEASIDE JOIN FORCES IN ANOTHER BEACHSIDE HAVEN, THE AREA KNOWN AS SCENIC HIGHWAY 30-A OR SIMPLY “30A” ALONG FLORIDA’S GULF COAST.
Lola Coastal Italian resides there in the bustling town center of Seacrest Beach, attracting locals and visitors alike with its signature pizza, fresh seafood, select-cut steaks, and delectable pasta. The brainchild of Chef Tom Catherall, one of the world’s few certified master chefs, Lola has become a 30-A staple since its inception in 2020. Now celebrating the five-year milestone of this casualyet-refined restaurant, Chef Catherall, co-owner David Richard, Sr., and their team are thrilled to announce an overhaul of the space, menu, and wine list at Lola.
“We’ve loved serving the community these past five years,” says Chef Tom Catherall. “Now we want to make some changes and improvements to elevate the experience for our regulars and draw in new customers to see what Lola is all about—the finest local and sustainably sourced ingredients, great wine, and authentic Italian ambience.”
The menu updates include a new array of topquality steaks alongside all-time favorites such as Lola’s pizzas, pappardelle pasta, jumbo lump crab cakes, and Chef’s famous garlic bread. Meanwhile, an upscale interior makeover brings new life to the dining room, boasting a partially open kitchen
where guests can get a taste of the action, a bar boasting high-end wines, beer, specialty cocktails, and a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. New seating and tables were added in March, and guests can enjoy alfresco dining on the terrace as they watch the sunset and passersby.
While Lola is nestled in Seacrest Beach between Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach on 30-A, just a short drive away, you’ll find Aja 30A, Catherall and Richard, Sr.’s hot spot for elevated Asian cuisine and nightlife, located at 30Avenue. With a diverse menu boasting freshly rolled sushi, nigiri, and sashimi, craving-worthy appetizers, fresh seafood, ramen, Thai curry, and other Asian favorites in an upscale, vibrant space, Aja 30A has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors since opening on December 31, 2022. Fittingly, its first public event was a New Year’s Eve party, welcoming the new spot for DJs, dancing, fine liquor, and good food to the area with a bang. Weekends at Aja 30A are loved by patrons seeking a place for dining and an upscale late-night atmosphere on 30-A.
Thanks to the overwhelmingly positive feedback and support of the community who love Aja 30A, Richard and Catherall hope to expand the concept into new markets within the near future. This includes the Atlanta area, where Chef Catherall formerly owned and operated twelve unique dining concepts across fifteen locations through his hospitality group, Here to Serve Restaurants. Helming iconic spots including Azalea, Tom Tom’s, and Twist, Chef Catherall is known for shaping the Atlanta dining scene before he moved to 30-A.
“Expanding to Atlanta is something we’ve talked about from the beginning,” says Richard. “With Chef Tom’s insider knowledge of the area and our goal of creating unforgettable dining and nightlife experiences worthy of any major metropolis, it just makes sense. I love Atlanta, and the chefs and restaurants there continue to raise the bar with incredible quality and atmosphere. We hope to bring Aja into that market and to create connections between there and our 30-A community, as the two are so intertwined.”
For now, the duo’s expansion starts at home: the 30-A community can rejoice that some of their favorite Chinese dishes are now available for
delivery right to their doorstep through Mr. Chan’s Kitchen. This new ghost kitchen from the Aja 30A owners and team offers classics like Szechuan shrimp, hot and spicy beef, lettuce wraps, General Tso’s chicken, and more, elevating your typical Chinese takeout with the finest ingredients and preparation. Mr. Chan’s is currently available to the area through the 30AGrub2Go food delivery mobile app.
With their sights set on the future, it’s onward and upward for Catherall and Richard as they continue striving for excellence and providing guest experiences worth talking about on 30-A and beyond. Stay tuned to see what they will cook up next!
