ENIS LAW broke numerous scoring records, smashed the British transfer record three

times and won countless trophies in a career with both Manchester clubs, Huddersfield Town and Torino. However, the 74-year-old insists none of these gave him more satisfaction than running out for Scotland in front of a capacity crowd at Hampden.

As the national stadium once again welcomes the Lawman on a night of tribute and nostalgia, the 55 times capped legend of our game admits he’s been counting the days for a return to his spiritual home in Mount Florida.

He said: “I achieved a wee bit of success in my career but there was nothing better than being selected to play for my country. All of the other games I played, for Manchester United and the rest of my clubs were fantastic and winning titles and cups were brilliant moments but there was nothing like playing for your country. That was the realisation for me of a schoolboy dream, it was the pinnacle and there was nothing better. “ I have had the great privilege of playing alongside some unbelievable players. Back then we had fantastic players, it was just unfortunate we didn’t qualify for World Cups.

In fairness in those days it was quite difficult to qualify as only one team qualified and you were playing against the cream of Europe such as Germany, Spain, Czechoslovakia or Poland Most of these countries had fantastic players so it was always so difficult.

An atmosphere of uncertainty permeated the board rooms and committee rooms of Scottish football during the opening weeks and months of the First World War. A patriotic fervour, actively encouraged by the government, had gripped sections of the general public and an ever growing chorus of voices poured scorn over the professional football industry. The popularity of the people’s game was viewed by some as having a detrimental effect on the war effort, distracting tens of thousands of potential recruits. Such was the pressure being placed on football’s governing bodies that the Scottish Cup competition was suspended and motions were raised within the Scottish FA Council to suspend professional football altogether.
