reetings fellow bovine enthusiasts. We have come to my second favorite time of year; pre-fall. The weather is cooling down a little, the calves are all nice and fat, fair week has passed, and I only have two more articles to write. Oh, and college football is back—go Aggies! Yes, the maroon and white ones. Not the blue ones. Tsk tsk.

So, while I have your attention, I would like to talk a little about giving back. I know for the most part I’m preaching to the choir; as cattlemen and cattlewomen, we are probably one of the most generous groups out there. In fact, let’s take a minute and see how many ways I can think of. First on my list is all the producers who are engaged in the Idaho Cattle Association (ICA), National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), Idaho Beef Council, and Public Lands Council (PLC). These are the foundation of our industry, and without members giving their time and financial support, we would have nothing.

It always amazes me how most people are very willing to help out if asked, and many don’t even need to be asked. I think most of this comes from having been raised to help out and being helped out. I can remember many a fair when I got help trimming my steer, or help with the slightly more athletic one that my parents told me not to take. I’m sure you have all seen this steer at the fair, he unloads with several large men holding 30 foot lead ropes and a nose ring. He is herded to the stall where a chain is snapped to the tie pole and then everyone breathes easier until the next one comes in or this one has to be moved. In all my years at the fair I have only seen one steer get lose on the midway, and after an hour of chasing was finally corralled and taken home. No, it wasn’t mine but if you look back in the books 25 or so years you can figure it out.

We always had help from our families and neighbors with 4-H and FFA. They were our leaders, helpers and supporters, but most of all were good role models for we kids growing up. They taught us to help out others and expect nothing in return, even though we almost always got more help back. Then as I got older I started to see how many other people gave back, through community involvement by being on the school boards and road boards, through church events and school activities. I know there are a few people who do this for fame and glory, but most are just giving back.

After college I started to see the importance of getting involved and starting to give back to many of the organizations that I grew up with. I would sponsor a walk-a-thon, buy Girl Scout cookies (Samoas are my favorite), Little Caesars pizzas, and the list goes on and on. I did this because it was my way of giving back — just like many before me had done when I was selling the pizzas or looking for sponsors. As I got older, I started to get more involved with the cattle industry and saw the need to give back to the organizations where I made my living. ICA was a perfect fit mainly because most of the people involved we there to pay something forward. The last 15 years or so I have seen more generosity in our industry than any other. We will donate to Beef Counts to feed the hungry, belt buckles to the 4-H and FFA kids, time and labor to help out neighbors, and if ever there is a disaster we are always first in line to help out our fellow ranchers.

So, as we head into fall, take a moment to ask yourself, ‘am I giving back enough to repay all the times I have been helped out?’ Well, that’s it for now. I’m off to go watch my Aggies play, and just a heads up—if you’re trying to get a hold of me around the 10th of October, it might be tough. I will be on my annual pilgrimage to College Station to make sure that the young Aggs don’t forget that we old Aggs still rule and can whoop it up just like we used to.

Chicken and Clear Liquor

A

man ordering chicken for dinner is about the same as a man drinking clear liquor with fruit in it. It just doesn’t seem right to me, yet I’m concerned that it is becoming more and more common.

Just recently, I was out at a nice establishment for dinner. As my wife and I surveyed the menu, a young couple on a date was seated at a table next to ours. I have to admit that I noticed the young man had done well with the conformation of the date he acquired. What happened next really disappointed me. He ordered chicken.

Who goes out for a nice piece of chicken?! I failed to notice when the waitress brought his dinner to his table, but I can imagine it was marinated in some tropical sissy juice and served with an orzo salad. No potato. No whiskey. More than likely his Caribbean-pineapple-mango-papaya-margarita chicken and raisin orzo salad was accompanied by a cucumber infused clear liquor mixed with more tropical juices as his beverage of choice. I shrugged at my wife and told her, “He’s going home alone tonight.”

The fundamentals on the supply side of record cattle prices are fairly selfexplanatory, at least for those of us involved in the cattle industry; we have the lowest herd sizing in 60 years. However, what about the demand side? Obviously exports continue to be a significant driving force in the economics of the cattle industry, and Uncle Sam’s consumers keep spending the Washingtons, Lincolns, and Jacksons for the most part.

Something to stop and ask yourself, while basking in these record prices, is ‘how expensive is too expensive, and what is the longevity in our consumers?’ Unfortunately, while beefing up for this record price presentation, I had to stop and ponder another 60 year low which isn’t very positive. Domestic per capita consumption of beef is the lowest in 60 years. And decreasing.

Coupling this fact with the anecdotal observation that I made about the unashamed chicken-eating man, it alarmed me. Sometimes it is easy to ignore what you are eating when everything is covered in gravy. This is certainly something to ponder as we participate in national conversations about increasing our resources to market beef, trade or traceability.

Feeder Update

A

n article concerning any aspect of the cattle business this year will reflect on the unprecedented appreciation in cattle prices. This impressive market has benefitted everyone selling any kind of animal in the beef production line. Our cattle herd in the United States continues to operate at record low numbers while the demand for our product continues to surge around the world, creating the “perfect storm” for the market we are witnessing now.

For the cattle feeders of the world we have sold fat cattle through the spring and summer at levels that were previously unheard of, which has been exciting. However, as you all know, replacing those cattle in our feed yards at some reasonable level has been nearly impossible.

No matter the market, cattle feeders still have to battle ongoing environmental issues, such as water quality and air quality. We had some good discussion on those topics at our feeder council meeting and golf tournament in McCall last month. Thank you to all of those feeders in attendance.

Another issue cattle feeders continue to monitor is country of origin labeling (COOL). Most recently in this arena, the U.S. Court of Appeals denied the meat industries’ preliminary injunction to prevent the implementation of COOL. Therefore, COOL will move forward as it is written, forcing packers to create new labels or limit which cattle they choose to slaughter. Like all regulation, this passes additional cost to the consumer, who really has the final say with their dollars.

Other things to consider in this exceptional market. 95 percent of the world’s population lives outside of the U.S., and from 2009 to 2050 the world will need to double its food supply. According to those statistics, as cattle feeders, the demand for our product should remain strong. As was stated earlier, our cattle numbers in this country are at 1951 levels, and with the implementation of COOL there is limited access to slaughter facilities that will slaughter imported animals. Corn prices have decreased substantially over the last year, which will help to efficiently add more pounds to a limited supply of fat cattle. Purebred breeders over the last 30 years have done an outstanding job enhancing the positive traits and eliminating the negative traits demanded ultimately by what our consumers want on their plate. However, in order to help meet those additional requirements on our food supply, cattle feeders will need to have access to all the safe and effective technologies that are available.

“Race for the Steaks” 5K and 15K Run The first annual Race for the Steaks 5K and 15K is premiering in Boise on October 11th, 2014. The race is presented by the Idaho Beef Council and is in partnership with the Boise YMCA. This is the first time that the Idaho Beef Council has partnered with the YMCA. Tim Severa, the YMCA Boise Area Sports Director commented on the partnership, saying, “The Treasure Valley Family YMCA is very excited to work with the Idaho Beef Council on the inaugural Race for the Steaks 5K & 15K races.

These new races are truly a celebration of the best that Boise has to offer: the beautiful Boise River, our awesome greenbelt system, the gorgeous Bethine Church Trail, and it is all topped off with a Tri-Tip steak! It does not get any better!”

The Race for the Steaks is a unique event featuring an evening start of 4 p.m. for both distances and a full tri-tip dinner for all participants. The run will begin and end in Ann Morrison Park and participants can plan to enjoy a beautiful fall evening along the Boise River and Boise Greenbelt.

“We are so excited to have a race presented by the Idaho Beef Council,” said Judy Hinman, Chairperson of the Idaho Beef Council, which represents Idaho’s beef producers. “Idaho’s beef industry ranks in the top three of Idaho’s agriculture industries and is an important part of our economy.”

Race for the Steaks is open to all athletes age 10 and up and costs $35 per racer. In addition to the dinner, participants will also receive an official Race for the Steaks running shirt.

Generations Typified by county fairs, involvement in the cattle industry is in the blood.

howing cattle at the fair is somewhat of a rite of passage in my family. For several generations of Marchants and Schumanns, the fair has been looked forward to as the event of the year, closely rivaling—if not surpassing—Christmas. The fair provides a magical combination of feelings of community kinship, new and old friendships, pride in animal husbandry, and industry solidarity.

The smell of the barn, the food, the early morning feedings and late night rodeos, and the kids with their animals all work together to create memories of which unrelenting nostalgia is born. Just recently, I was in the throes of preparing for the Twin Falls County Fair. My oldest daughter turned 9 this year, which meant she was old enough to complete a beef project for the fair. Not wanting to push her into reliving my old dreams, I was pleased when last winter she announced as matter-of-factly as the sun rises, she would be taking a steer to the fair. In her short lifespan, she has already been to enough fairs to appreciate them and to catch the fever.

My husband, Jason, who has been forced to celebrate his birthday at my home fair in Cassia County for as long as we’ve been married, is a relative newcomer to the cattle showing world.

While visiting at the Cassia County Fair a couple weeks ago, my cousin asked Jason if he was ready for our first fair steer experience.

Jason’s reply included a slight degree of hesitation. At which point

my cousin, who currently has four kids with beef projects, laughed and warned him, “Watch out, it gets in your blood.” As proven by five generations of cattle showing in my family, once it gets in your blood, it is hard to ignore summer’s call to participate in the fair.

For the ranch-raised kids, the fair is the reward at the end of a long summer full of hard work. For the kids who are a degree or two removed from day-to-day production agriculture, yet still find a way to bring an animal to the fair, the experience plants in them a life-long appreciation for agriculture. That kind of dedicated industry support cannot be bought. For both, the fair provides the reward for the hard work of a beef project and teaches the kind of values that can be learned in no other setting. For the public who attend the county fairs in droves across the country, the fairs satisfy their innate desire to get back to their agrarian roots, no matter how many generations removed, and reminds them of the importance of our industry.

Show barn politics aside, the fair is representative of all that is good in our industry and shows the promise for a continued future.

In the midst of all the troubling issues facing our industry and the seemingly constant attacks on our livelihood—whether from an over-reaching government, extreme activists, or even from Mother Nature’s unpredictable ways—the county fair serves as a reminder of why we fight. We’ve got a world to feed, rural economies 3 to uphold, and open spaces to maintain, but most importantly, we’re raising the next generations of Americans who understand the value of a hard day’s work and the power of personal responsibility.

Risky Business: Feeders Find Ways Around Obstacles, Both Short and Long Term adapted from story by Miranda Reiman, CAB® Industry Information Assistant Director “The market is screaming for feeder calves,” said Dan Basse, president of AgResource Co., at the 2014 Feeding Quality Forum in August.

“It’s going to take five to seven years for herd rebuilding to catch up with demand and for profitability to return to the feeding sector.

Cows hold the opportunity.”

Scott Brown, University of Missouri ag economist, said during herd rebuilding the numbers show it pays to focus on quality.

“Quality can become a risk management tool for the industry in the long run,” he said.

“Investment in the genetics of that herd will pay dividends.”

When feeders get good cattle into the yard, it’s important to take care of all of the details to make sure they’ll live up to their potential.

Fred Vocasek, senior laboratory agronomist with Servi-Tech, talked about the importance of feed testing.

“Too many people just go by the NRC [Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle] tables and assume corn silage is average,” Vocasek said. “Our data shows it ranges from about 7.5 to 9 percent crude protein and there are other differences as well. We can look up an average range over time on many feedstuffs by the first 3 numbers in a zip code, so a producer can see where his feed ranks in the area.”

Feeders need to know these variables, he said, as load content could vary widely, especially if equipment fails to provide an even delivery to the bunk.

Employee skill and dedication are also important factors for consistent cattle care. A panel of feeders discussed hiring and retention, sharing their tips for keeping the best talent on the team.

“Employees want to know that what they say matters,” said feeder panelist Anne Burkholder of Will Feed Inc. All panelists said successful manager-employee relationships include good communication, clear expectations and a way to provide feedback.

“It’s also important to pay feedlot workers enough to have a good quality of life,” Burkholder said.

Some feeders rely on websites and job listings, others on university connections and networking, but many agreed that good employees come from good employees.

“We have to embrace technology, but do consumers like technology? Not really,” he said, mostly attributing that to their lack of experience with technology as it relates to food.

But there are other areas, like energy and water consumption, where we might be able to make improvements and those are really the areas where we want to target our efforts to help make the industry more sustainable in the future,” Stackhouse-Lawson said.

Some of the areas where the industry has already made improvements include major reductions in emissions to soil, air and water as a result of the installation of covered lagoons in packing plants.

Those lagoons, many of which are also designed to capture and convert biogas to energy, lead to reductions in electricity use and add to industry sustainability. Those improvements offset other areas where efficiencies and improvements are more difficult to achieve or quantify. The research also found there are many areas where additional study and assessment work is needed.

“It’s important to remember that this science is still relatively new and evolving,” said Stackhouse-Lawson.

“There are some aspects of beef production where it’s difficult and often very expensive to benchmark sustainability. Measuring the intangible value that is created by the open space and wildlife on a ranch or the effects of wildfire mitigation that are the result of good grazing practices are things that we are still working on.”

Researchers are working on new tools to benchmark current and future improvements in some of those areas. Those measurements will add to the science and future sustainability assessment work, she explained.

Although the number of consumers selecting this answer is still a small minority, it is statistically significant in the sense that most of these consumers have this attitude towards ground beef. Ground beef is not only one of the most price sensitive products in the

Cattle Growers Have Opportunities to Lock in their Profits from Unprecedented Cattle Prices

by Brett Crosby, Custom Ag Solutions As cattle inventories steadily declined over the past several years, most market experts expected 2014 to be a year of high cattle prices. Still, many in the industry have been surprised by the high levels prices reached. People have been calling a top to the cattle market for a long time, only to see it make another run higher.

How high the market will go is anybody’s guess, but two things are fairly certain: 1) The market will eventually find a stopping point and then correct lower and 2) Virtually every cow-calf producer is in profitable territory at these price levels.

Working from these assumptions, prudent cowcalf producers have opportunities to take steps to capture profitability at these levels.

For the 2014 calf crop, prices can be protected several ways. Producers trying to lock in prices in a profitable environment have long used forward contracts through video sales or order buyers. Managers of larger operations have included futures and options contracts in new! their price risk management strategies as well.

Recently, producers who sell less than one load a year, and who have historically had limited risk management options, may utilize the Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) program, administered by the USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) and delivered by local livestock agents, to insure against market downturns.

Video sales have been very active this spring and summer, suggesting producers may have already contracted their 2014 calf crop. There is certainly nothing wrong with this strategy, as it’s hard to lose money by locking in a profitable price. Anecdotal evidence suggests that a much Out with the old; in with the new. early video sales also means that fewer calves will be available this fall, and feedlots that are looking for inventory will have to pay even higher prices. In the former scenario, producers who are contracting calves now will be very happy with their marketing strategy, but if the latter scenario develops, these same producers may leave some money on the table.

Producers who trade futures markets can use put options to protect themselves from a market downturn without limiting the upside potential of a rapidly rising market. Of course, the downside is that this protection isn’t free, and near-the-money puts on fall contracts are going to cost between $3 and $8 per hundred-weight, depending on the strike price and contract month. Options farther out of the money are not as expensive, but don’t provide as much price protection, i.e. the market has to fall farther before the options are in the money and start paying off. Also, futures and options are no price guarantee, as basis may vary with market conditions. Futures and options may be the best alternative for producers who are willing to risk some downside in exchange for capturing value if the market continues to climb.

LRP insurance is another way to protect against a market downturn. As with options, LRP protects the downside price risk. The insurance pays if the CME Feeder Cattle Index falls below a predetermined level, similar to a strike price with options.

A significant benefit of LRP for cattle producers is the opportunity to tailor the policy to the size of their operation by purchasing on a per-head basis and the insurance premium is partially subsidized by USDA. The 2014 cattle market has been remarkable. Since January, front month feeder cattle futures have risen nearly 32 percent, and they have climbed 70 percent since hitting their 2013 lows last summer.

Live cattle are similarly 30 percent higher than they were at the same time last summer, and boxed beef prices are over 25 percent higher than last July. At the same time, even at these price levels, exports have increased, suggesting that demand for U.S. beef is healthy. This is all good news and reason for optimism regarding prices in the near term.

We learned in 2008, though, that markets can change quickly, and good prices now are no guarantee that prices will be good this fall. With prices this profitable, employment of some sort of price risk management strategy is the right call.

A System for Success

One step in the process of supplying American Wagyu Kobe beef includes Snake River Cattle Feeders in southeastern Idaho.

L

ooking around Snake River Cattle Feeders, it appears to be a typical feedyard. Cattle at the bunks, cowboys riding pens, the sound of the feed mill in the background. However, looking closer, the cattle themselves tell a slightly different story.

“Our program is unique as we’re building 100 percent of our own supply,” says Marshall Jensen, manager of Snake River Cattle Feeders in American Falls. “We have a full-blood Wagyu herd where we raise bulls. We find producers to contract with who either lease our bulls or use our Wagyu semen to breed their Angus or English-based herds to produce an F1 cross.”

Snake River Cattle Feeders buys back all the calves from the producer, including steers and heifers to be fed exclusively for Snake River Farms, a branded beef program owned by the Agri Beef, Co. Producers do not retain any replacements.

Another difference in the cattle besides their genetic make-up is the days on feed.

“While a typical feedlot turns over cattle every 140 days, these cattle stay on feed an average of 500 days,” Jensen says.

“We ship cattle every Thursday, based on numbers the marketing department gives us,” Jensen says.

Carcasses are graded on a Japanese scale, which include Silver, Black and Gold. All three categories have intramuscular fat with at least slightly abundant marbling—on our U.S.D.A. scale—and greater.

Another notable difference Jensen appreciates about the half-bloods he feeds is their heartiness.

“We had 900 350-lb. bawling calves in last year and didn’t lose a single one,” he says.

“They are so hearty. We only have about 1 percent death loss total. Once they get past the first 60 days, they are usually good to go.”

Feedyard fundamentals Snake River Cattle Feeders was the first feedyard Robert Rebholtz, Sr. purchased as he was building the Agri Beef Co., business.

He took over ownership and management of the yard in 1968, making improvements and turning it into a profitable part of his cattle feeding operation. In the 1990s, Agri Beef was seeing a niche market developing for the highly marbled beef coming from Wagyu cattle in the Kobe region of Japan. At this point, the Agri Beef, Co., imported purebred Wagyu cattle, started developing their own purebred herd in the United States and established a brand of beef called Snake River Farms. Snake River Cattle Feeders nows feeds all of the cattle used to produce Kobe beef for the brand.

“Nearly all the feed purchased for the yard is from within an 80-mile radius of here,” Jensen says. “We have to purchase dry distillers grains from the Dakotas. We

contract with 8 to 9 producers to grow high moisture corn. With short season varieties, producers in this part of the state are able to raise corn.”

In addition to purchasing many local feedstuffs, the yard has a composting consortium where they supply the compost to put directly back on the corn fields.

“The farmers in the group actually own the compost, equipment and turner,” Jensen says. “They buy it back from us. They have to buy fertilizer anyway and this gives us a way to recycle the manure from the feedyard.”

Compost takes about 9 weeks to mature, and gets turned once a week. Jensen says it has to get hot enough to kill the weed seed then it gets spread back on the crop fields.

“They like to bring people up through the program,” Jensen says. “I started out feeding cattle, then worked as operations manager before taking over as manager. I have done many of the jobs the other employees are doing now, so I can relate to them.”

Jensen says, like most people in the cattle business, every day is a little different.

However, typically he gets into the office early, talks to the office staff, checks commodity markets, then heads outside.

“I’m very hands on as I would rather be outside helping the cowboys move pens or whatever needs done,” he adds. “I’m only in the office 20 percent of the time. That’s the way I like it.”

Agri Beef Co. is employee and animal focused, Jensen points out.

“The company has a STAR Commitment, which means they are committed to sustainability, total quality, animal well-being and responsibility,” he says. “Our priorities are employee safety, cattle well-being and cattle performance.”

and an evaporation pond all connected by underground pipes so water can be moved around if needed. Water is sprayed morning and night to keep the dust down, and cattle are bedded in winter for their comfort. These are just some of the ways the company stays focused on its goals.

Creating supply Jensen works closely with Garrett Tschida and Whitt West, both of AB Genetics.

Tschida manages the fullblood Wagyu herd, while West is the director of procurement and genetics in the livestock division.

He works with producers who raise the halfblood cattle for the Snake River Farms program. AB Genetics has several hundred bulls in inventory and leases them all over the West.

“This system is based on relationships,” West points out. “We have to cultivate those relationships.”

While the company has tried advertising in the past, they have found most of their producers either find them because a neighbor is working with the company or a current customer recommends a producer to the company.

“95 percent of our referrals come from family or friends of current customers,” he says.

Working with the Snake River Farms program is also a much slower process than a typical client/feedyard endeavor.

“It’s a back and forth trust relationship,” West says. “They turn out the bulls and have to trust that we will be back the following year to buy back those calves. We get everything put down in the contract. It’s nice being affiliated with a company and program with integrity.”

AB Genetics continues to look for more producers utilizing English-based cow herds as partners to produce cattle for the program.

“We have found the Angus or Britishbreed crossed with the Wagyu give us the best carcass quality,” he says.

West spends time at the producers’ place either at the beginning of the process or when calves are shipping. Producers decide whether they want to lease bulls or use artificial insemination to breed their herd.

Most producers use the bulls on their firstcalf heifers as they have a low birthweight.

“We’re always looking to find more producers to work with,” West says. “We have been able to offer a premium for their calves. Producers range in size from those with 10 cows to upwards of 3,000.

Bovine Temperament: A Feedlot Focus Researchers examine how temperament of cattle could affect their immune function and carcass merit. story by Katie Allen, Kansas State Research and Extension

A

s a new load of weaned calves enters the feedlot, workers prepare to process the calves upon arrival.

Processing would likely include vaccinating these calves to prevent respiratory disease

and treating them for parasites, among other regular processing procedures. Many handlers would acknowledge that calves with more docile, or calm, temperaments are much easier and safer to process.

Cattle producers of all types—from the cow-calf, stocker and feedlot sectors— historically have selected for and preferred to manage calmer animals not only because they are safer for handlers to be around, but they also seem to gain weight faster and have fewer health issues.

Recent research involving many universities, including Kansas State, examined the genetics of bovine temperament and how it relates to two important aspects of production: immune function, specifically animals’ susceptibility to bovine respiratory disease (BRD), and carcass merit. It found, as previous research has also indicated, that temperament is a moderately heritable trait producers can select for in their herds.

Bob Weaber, beef breeding and genetics specialist for K-State Research and Extension and one of the researchers on the project, said this study showed that animals with a more favorable temperament gained better on feed compared to more excitable animals.

Because of this, they were overall more mature at harvest and seemed to have carcass fat, which is desirable to an extent for better quality grades. But, at extreme levels, the extra fat is undesirable for both quality and yield grades.

Temperament and its relation to the disease component of the study was a little harder for the researchers to separate, he said, and yielded some somewhat surprising findings.

About the study Weaber worked with many other researchers on the project that was led by Mark Enns, professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University. They collected data in 2007 and 2008 as part of a large study to look at the genetics of feedlot cattle health.

“It was an involved project in that it took a lot of human hands to pull off,” Weaber said. “We processed data on more than 2,500 head of steers fed in southeast Colorado during those two years.”

It took the researchers about five days to process the cattle upon arrival at the feedlot, he said. Ultrasound information helped the researchers determine the animals’ body

composition, both when they were placed on feed and at subsequent processing about 80 days into the feeding period. The researchers also collected temperament data at these times and monitored the animals closely for disease, specifically BRD, at all times.

The researchers measured temperament in two ways: chute score and exit velocity.

The chute score scale defined by the Beef Improvement Federation www.bifconference. com/bif2012/proceedings-pdf/05randel.pdf ranges from 1 to 6, where calmer animals are at the lower end and most aggravated cattle, the ones Weaber said “test every weld on the squeeze chute,” are at the higher end.

“In this case, most of the animals scored 2, 3 and 4, which is typical of beef cattle categorization in the United States,” he said.

Exit velocity was calculated based on the time it took an animal to cover a defined distance of 6 feet, after it was released from the chute.

Additionally, a blood sample from each animal was taken during processing to examine concentrations of cortisol and interleukin-8 (IL-8). High levels of cortisol indicate stress in cattle, while high levels of IL-8 show a more active or functional immune system, Weaber said.

Health component’s surprising results At first thought, producers might desire low levels of cortisol and high levels of IL-8 in their cattle, Weaber said, as these cattle would likely be calmer and have stronger immune responses. However, this study found that concentrations of IL-8 had a positive relationship with animals classified with BRD, while concentrations of cortisol had a strong negative genetic relationship with BRD—an interesting and unexpected finding of this study.

Weaber said he understands this finding to mean that a strong immune response could cost an animal a lot of energy. Animals with strong immune responses, and higher levels of IL-8, might generate fevers and have other negative responses that could affect performance.

“Animals that get sick, manage the disease in a more moderate way and tolerate the infection, versus those that have a large immune response, actually perform better,” Weaber said. “These animals don’t spend as much energy fighting the disease. They do it sufficiently, obviously, and survive the incidence of BRD.” The results of this particular project helped stem a larger U.S. Department of Agriculture Temperament continued to page 26...

In this study www.brdcomplex.org/Index.html, researchers are doing a series of inoculations on animals to make sure each one is exposed to BRD disease pathogens and then monitoring how they respond to it.

Another surprising finding of the research that challenged interpretation, Weaber said, was the second chute score observation on the animals that occurred 80 days into the feeding period, as it related to BRD incidence. The researchers found that animals of higher chute score, the ones with less desirable temperament, had a substantially lower incidence of BRD. Observational data from past studies, he said, has shown that animals respond differently to handling over time. Some animals acclimate to human handling when they have positive experiences and become easier to handle.

“I wonder if the animals that had BRD early in the feeding period, which is when most of them did, were handled more and had lower chute scores the second time around,” he said. “That might create that inverse relationship we observed in the data.”

Carcass merit somewhat expected The researchers found that animals with genetics to be more temperamental, based on chute scores, typically had genetic merit for slightly heavier carcass weights, slightly larger ribeye areas, numerically lower, more favorable yield grades, but slightly worse marbling scores compared to calmer cattle. Those were all relatively weak relationships though, Weaber said.

Stronger relationships, he said, existed between carcass merit and concentrations of cortisol and IL-8 in the blood. These results were somewhat different than the relationships observed between carcass merit and temperament scores.

“We found animals that had genetic merit for elevated cortisol upon arrival at the feedyard were associated with genetic merit for lighter carcass weights at the end of the feeding period—an indicator they weren’t expected to perform quite as well,” Weaber said. “They also were genetically associated with slightly lower marbling scores and smaller ribeye areas.”

IL-8 concentration from a genetics standpoint, he said, was positively associated with hot carcass weight and marbling score, meaning those cattle with higher immune response had the genetic potential to be heavier and fatter. IL-8 concentration did not have a relationship with ribeye area and had a slight positive genetic association with yield grade, meaning it related to less desirable, higher yield grades.

“All of this suggests that more excitable cattle will weigh and gain less throughout the finishing phase than their calmer peers,” Weaber said.

Information you can use Weaber recommends that cattle producers practice low-stress animal handling through Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training.

Being gentle and moving animals slowly pays dividends both in the learned behavior of the animals and the subsequent elevation levels of cortisol and stressors that impact an animal’s immune function.

“The more things we can do right in handling of cattle above and beyond what their genetic predisposition may be certainly helps,” he said.

...my week as a cattle feeder MONDAY I arrived at M/M Feedlot just before the first shipment of heifers. Owner Kent Mann took me out on his Gator to meet Noe, Eric and the other cowboys. Then I took my place on the fence and watched as the heifers were unloaded from the truck and turned out into the corral. When the dust settled, I was waved off my post. Now I was actually

going to be helpful. Or at least that is what the cowboys thought.

The cattle needed to be weighed and given shots, and I was just the girl to run the chute. I was doing pretty well, albeit a little slow, so at the encouragement of my mentors, I sped things up. With the speed came my face clasped in my hands and “Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!” as the four fellas laughed at their buddy chasing down the bovine and corralling her back through the chute. Eventually Noe handed me the vaccination gun and sent me to the other side of the chute. At which point I apologized to each beast that came through the chute when I got the stink eye for giving them a shot.

They were very patient with all of my questions and misguided references to gender (because all animals are male in my mind, apparently), and explained every step of the process—why and how, and the why of the how—as we went along.

TUESDAY I was back at the feedlot early the next morning with no idea what was in store for me, but I quickly found out. Tuesday is artificial insemination day at M/M Feedlot. My tour guide was a petite and bow-legged man. Thinking I was just going to follow along behind and see how the job was done, you can imagine the stunned look and raised eyebrow when I was handed a shoulder-length glove and a bottle of Dawn dish soap. “Oh, this is where this is going,” I thought.

I donned the glove and added a good squirt of soap to my hand, then followed my companion through the gate. He explained the straws and how to place them, then walked up to the first “little lady” and lifted her tail. “It relaxes them when you talk to them,” he said, as he talked up the heifer’s self-confidence.

Because, obviously. His reassurances were, from time to time, replaced with gentle renditions of ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers’ and other hymns.

Then it was my turn. He talked me through the birth canal and right into the uterus. “Act like you own the place, Britany. It won’t hurt them.” That’s just the problem—I DON’T own the place.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” became my mantra as I slid my arm through the warmth and deposited semen into 350 Dulcineas, Charlottes and Carlottas.

WEDNESDAY On Wednesday I was back with the cowboys.

After fielding a dozen questions about why I wasn’t married yet, I followed Noe and Eric over to the med pens, where we checked scours and pink eye and administered the necessary antibiotics. So, I’m practically a doctor now, as long as you need a subcutaneous injection of penicillin.

Next, we headed over to walk corrals. Walking corrals allowed us to check the cattle for any symptoms of illness or infection, and causes very little stress on the animals. Of course, as memories of my five-year-old self being chased around the yard in a swimming suit, arms flailing, by a Holstein came rushing back to me, it took me a minute to be equally low-stress.

THURSDAY Preg-checking Day. I was confident. I had, after all, just inseminated 350 heifers two days ago. Even if I didn’t “act like I own the place,” I felt fairly sure I knew my way around. And I had it on good authority it only takes two good swipes to get the poop out. The vet handed me a glove. Another one of those that went all the way up to my shoulder. I pulled it on over my sweatshirt sleeve and waited. The vet handed me another glove. I was puzzled. I already have one of these. Maybe I should put this one in my pocket for late--.

“Put it on over the one you’re wearing,” was my instruction.

Double-bagging it, eh? This may not be a good sign. I slid my hand inside and pulled it up, just in time to have the vet alligator clip both to my sweatshirt. This is serious business. Again, I thought I would probably just be following the vet around. Maybe feeling out the area on a couple of the girls just to learn the business.

Wrong again. I followed the vet through the gate and stayed close behind him. You had to practically have a running start to be able to reach deep enough to feel the

embryo. In an animal as large as a heifer, it is still amazing to me that 36 days into gestation, the baby isn’t any bigger than a petite green pea. “Can you feel it?” I was asked, halfway through the 400 heifers we hoped had settled.

“Yeah!” I exclaimed excitedly. He’s actually pregnant.”

News Makers Idaho Cattle Association Hires Membership and Productions Manager The Idaho Cattle Association (ICA) has hired Dawn Schooley to fill the organization’s position of Membership and Productions Manager.

Schooley was born and raised in southeastern Colorado, youngest of three, into a multi-generational cattle and horse operation.

Schooley graduated from Montana State University in Bozeman, where she earned a bachelors degree in Animal Science. Schooley has worked on ranches in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, as well as for the United States Department of Agriculture, and in the Animal Industries Division of the Idaho State Department of Agriculture. Schooley currently resides in Marsing, enjoys spending time with family and friends, roping and going home to Colorado and New Mexico.

“Dawn’s cattle industry experience and background will prove to be invaluable in growing the organization and providing the highest quality and most relevant events experience possible for our members,” said Wyatt Prescott, Executive Vice President of the Idaho Cattle Association. “We are excited to have her on board with us and expand our ability to make membership in our organization as valuable as possible.”

Media Tour and Field Day in Lemhi River Valley to Showcase Chinook Salmon Thanks to conservation efforts by local ranchers, Chinook salmon are running in the Lemhi River at the highest levels in more than 50 years. Not since 1960 have the fish in the upper and lower Lemhi River Valley reached population levels this high.

Carl Lufkin of Leadore, credits land management practices around the riparian area to private use.

“We manage our public lands well, but we can do better,” he says. “If we managed public lands the way our private lands are managed, we would have some really impressive changes.”

Efficient irrigation systems, tributary connectivity, and easement protection are just some of the practices employed by ranchers in the Lemhi River Valley.

“The important take-away here is that ranching does have a positive impact on fisheries,” Lufkin says.

The Idaho Cattle Association and Idaho Rangeland Resources Commission are hosting a media tour Sept. 17, in the area to showcase the positive impact ranching has on Idaho’s fish population.

Tending the Herd Mike Simpson is serving his eighth term in the House of Representatives for Idaho’s Second Congressional District.

Mike serves on the House Appropriations Committee. He is the Chairman for the Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development. He also serves on the Interior and Environment Subcommittee and the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee. These committees have jurisdiction over funding for a number of programs critical to Idaho, including the Department of Energy, the Department of the Interior, the Forest Service, our National Parks, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Smithsonian Institute.

What accomplishment are you most proud of in your years in public office?

From the standpoint of passing something that seemed difficult, if not impossible to accomplish, I am most proud of our effort to successfully delist wolves. From the standpoint of economic impact to Idaho, I am most proud of our efforts to protect and grow the mission of the Idaho National Laboratory as one of the world’s preeminent nuclear energy research and development laboratories.

What piece of legislation this year do you think is the most beneficial for the cattle producers in the state?

Whether through the appropriations process or through the authorizing committees, I believe the most beneficial legislation currently before Congress includes both the Grazing Improvement Act and efforts to reform the Equal Access to Justice Act. Having said that, I believe the most beneficial legislation we should be working on are reforms to NEPA and ESA.

What prompted you to get involved and continue in public office?

I ran for the Blackfoot City Council in 1980 as a way to help my community and serve it in some capacity. At the time, I never dreamed I would run for the legislature, much less for the U.S. Congress. As a dentist and small businessman, I hoped I could bring a perspective to local, state and federal government that I felt needed a greater emphasis. In Congress, I certainly strive to represent the interests of small, rural, western states where agriculture, water, state’s rights, and public lands are so prominent and important.

It is immensely rewarding to represent the people of Idaho in Congress and to work with my colleagues in the Idaho Congressional Delegation every day on their behalf.

How can cattle producers effect change in the government?

First, I believe cattle producers specifically, and agricultural producers generally, are among the most effective advocates for their industry in all of America. I am always impressed by the insight, perspective and commonsense that Idaho agriculture producers bring to Washington, D.C., in each of their visits. If I were to suggest just one thing that could effect change, it would be to encourage you to work with your counterparts in other states, specifically those east of the Mississippi River, to share your perspective with their representatives in Congress. It is really crucial that we find a way to educate representatives of the larger population centers on the real impacts of NEPA, ESA, EAJA, and other federal legislation on farmers, ranchers, small businesses, and families in the West.

Congress is becoming more urban and less rural with each new census. So we have to focus on how we reach out to members of Congress who might not represent rural areas, but can appreciate the challenges we face in the western United States and in your industry.

I am ready to help you with that effort in any way that I can.
