Everything is Better With Some Cows Around

by Wyatt Prescott, ICA Executive Vice President The Corb Lund song, “Cows Around,” seems to explain what most of us already know.

Well everything is better with some cows around Livin’ in town sometimes brings me down Let me bestow this western blessing that I have found May you always have cows around The best way to keep cows around for the next 100 years is by engaging with all your cattle colleagues this July 1418 in Boise. Our centennial celebration will bring together cattle producers, industry friends, government leaders and agency officials, as well as the urban consumer for conversations about how to keep those cows around for another century. Our beef producing family only turns 100 years old once, and this week is sure to be a celebration you will be proud to be part of.

The differences in issues from 1915 to 2015 are set simply by perspective. What was seen as radical then may be commonplace today and certainly vice versa. One hundred years ago our industry was battling land and water rights, finding the best way to protect our natural resources, and the best practices for animal health and nutrition. Those issues haven’t changed.

Other news headlines today detail controversy over a confederate flag flying above the Charleston, South Carolina capitol building, while 1915 announced the Supreme Court’s acceptance of the charter of the Ku Klux Klan. President Woodrow Wilson refused to prohibit the immigration of illiterates in 1915, while President Obama’s recent immigration reform has left our industry wondering what comes next. The Federal Trade Commission was organized a century ago, and just a few weeks ago the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Trade Promotion Authority. The Germans first used poisonous gas in warfare in 1915, and today environmental groups are claiming manure is equally toxic, attempting to regulate it as a hazardous material or solid waste.

1915 saw the first Jewish governor, Moses Alexander, taking office in our very state, and the U.S. House of Representatives rejected the proposal to give women the right to vote. Japan had claimed economic control of China in 1915; this year China was ranked the third most powerful country in the world with Japan coming in at fourth during the G7 Summit in Germany. Alexander

Graham Bell, in New York City, called Thomas Watson in San Francisco, completing the first trans-continental telephone call, and the first wireless message sent from a moving train was received at a station. Today, we can make international phone calls, instantly send text and picture messages and emails, check social media, and track cattle using RFID technology through a hand-held computer we call a smartphone.

Round steak cost $.23/lb at the grocery store 100 years ago and averages $6.18/lb today. A loaf of bread set you back $.07, whereas today it runs $2.50. One hundred years ago you would have paid $.34 for a dozen eggs, but today you’ll pay $1.99. That cost is on the rise with the Avian flu spreading through poultry farms in the United States. A gallon of milk was just $.36 then, and now hovers around $2.09. Ford Motor Company rolled out its one millionth Model T, which cost $.15/gallon to fill with gas. At the Chevron on the corner by our office, regular fuel is priced at $3.05/gallon today.

Simply put, it goes back to the old adage, a man that is hungry has one problem and one who is fed as many.

Today, do-gooders are trying to boot Alexander Hamilton from the $10 bill, Donald Trump is running for president, and the valuation of something called a Fitbit doubled in its first week of IPO. Those of you who have been around the better part of this last 100 years never would have pictured the world in which we are living today, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to understand it better. So, let me share a few urban tricks I have found helpful since living in town to help you get the most out of your time in Boise in July.

In a crowded bar, always order a drink for each hand. Don’t take the time remaining on your parking meter lightly.

Resist the urge to run over bicyclists. Expect drivers to turn into the far lane. Use exact cash to purchase over-priced coffee to avoid the awkward tip. Never smell dreadlocks or accept a hug at a hotdog stand, and lastly, remember there are two kinds of people in this world: those who like Neil Diamond and those who don’t. If you follow these few urban tips then you are sure to enjoy the Annual Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show as we celebrate our association’s centennial in Boise July 14-18. I look forward to seeing you all there, as we work together to feed the future and always have cows around.

One Hundred Years Ago

the constitution and by-laws of an Idaho livestock organization were drawn up in a little meeting in Mackay, and with that the start of the United Cattle and Horse Growers Association of Idaho was born. A few decades later the name was changed to the Idaho Cattlemen’s Association. Today that tiny organization, that at one time only had two currently paid-up members, has grown into the Idaho Cattle Association, which has united more than 1,000 members throughout the state.

This July we have the opportunity to come together as feeders, ranchers and industry supporters to celebrate what that little band of producers did one century ago. We will be celebrating a monumental milestone for the association, but even more than that, we will be celebrating you. We Celebrate the tenacity and determination, endurance and perseverance that have kept this industry viable. We celebrate the heritage we have of early mornings and late nights and hard work in between. We celebrate an industry our state, region and country were built on and could not survive without.

We invite you to join us in Boise, July 14-18. This is your chance to commemorate a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. This is an opportunity to see old friends and make new ones. It is a week to learn from industry experts and social trendsetters. Join Us for the annual J.R. Simplot Memorial Golf Tournament, the Boise Bolo Tie Blowout, and the Great Steak Gala. Forever United to Feed the Future Esto Perpetua. The phrase was adopted as Idaho’s official motto in 1890, appears on the state seal, the state flag, and the 2007 Idaho quarter. But what does it mean?

As the story goes, these were the last words uttered by ancient theologian and mathematician Paolo Sarpi, in reference to his beloved home of Venice. At the time, the Latin words were translated as “Mayest thou endure forever!” However, when Emma Edwards Green, the only woman to design a state seal, set about drawing up the mocks for Idaho’s emblem, she interpreted the words to mean “It is forever.”

Whether you choose Sarpi’s interpretation or Ms. Green’s, Esto Perpetua encompasses what we believe and for what we stand. Our association has reached a significant milestone, yet we continue focusing on the future. ICA has been a pillar of support and defense for 100 years, and we want to keep the association around for another century. No, make that two centuries. At least.

Following the Cattle Baron’s Bash on Tuesday night, Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter will be kicking off Wednesday’s meetings.

During the past eight years in office, Gov. Otter has exemplified his commitment to the cattle industry; constantly going to bat for Idaho’s cattle producers. He has signed bills into law and established committees and agencies to improve our industry and keep it alive forever. Gov. Otter has championed on our behalf to curb wolf predation, buoy up resources to maintain sagebrush conservation, and poured

support into agricultural education. He and his wife, Lori, live on their ranch in Star and are active members of ICA. The tenacity our heritage was built upon is exactly what keeps us riding into the wind. This year we have the opportunity to be inspired by Mike Schlappi, who demonstrated the same flavor of determination to overcome odds to achieve his dreams. Just as we don’t allow the BLM or EPA to stop us in our pursuits, Mike found a way to circumvent his unexpected physical disabilities to win gold medals in the Paralympics, become a world champion, earn his Masters of Business Administration, and earn induction into the Hall of Fame.

Sometimes the best lessons can be learned from someone outside your own realm and foreign to your way of life.

Through Mike’s expertise, the realistic and workable strategies he brings to the table will add a little more hardware to your toolbox, offering you a perspective that will enrich your operation and help it endure forever.

Maybe Paolo Sarpi’s, “Mayest thou endure forever!” is a more accurate translation of the Latin phrase. It is a hopeful plea, and some days, when your herd takes a hit from disease or fire or drought, your last shred of hope is all you have to hold on to. But the interpretation of Emma Edwards Green speaks to the determination, perseverance and confidence that you and those who came before you have had to start each new day with purpose and resolve. Esto Perpetua. It is forever.

Three Generations and a Supermarket Three generations and a supermarket. That is what separates the average American from the ranch and feedlot. It may be difficult, or even impossible, for us to comprehend how a kid at a table in any American city can’t explain where the food on his plate came from. The urbanization of America has made it more and more difficult for cattle producers to market their management practices and their product , even though Idaho’s cattle producers and urban consumers are concerned about the same things—sustainability, nutrition and animal safety.

Herd Health Today and Tomorrow From the days of trailing cattle to market to now using EPDs and genetic technology to make bull selections, the beef industry has advanced by leaps and bounds during the past century. With the value of beef at a recordbreaking high, our momentum will continue to propel us forward, but only if we take advantage of all the tools in the toolbox.

The Idaho Cattlemen’s College, which is brought to convention by Zoetis, will provide you with these tools and will teach you how to use them to your full advantage.

Cattle Genetic Specialist Larry Gran will teach producers how to compare phenotypic traits with DNA results.

Twelve heifers will be onsite at this year’s convention and participants will have the opportunity to visually evaluate the heifers and make replacement selections based on their observations. Once those selections have been made DNA results for the heifers will be revealed and utilization tips and tricks will be discussed.

During the last 100 years, feeding cattle has become a true science, and Dr. Gary Sides will discuss heifer nutritional development programs. Feed efficiency is just as important now as ever, and you’ll take a deeper look into the benefits of developing a solid nutrition program from weaning to preg checking.

With producers working to maximize the reproductive potential of their herd, but continuing to face issues like bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), it is increasingly important to evaluate which vaccination programs provide the most protection to both the herd and pocket book.

Dr. Neil Rimby and Dr. Scott Jensen from the University of Idaho will educate producers on current marketing aspects of nonreplacement stock. They will also provide a summary of 13 years of heifer feedlot performance data from the University of Idaho’s A to Z Retained Ownership Program.

This data will help producers evaluate which road to take to meet your overall objective.

It is often a difficult decision whether to retain ownership of heifers or benefit your bottom line by selling the heifers through auction or private treaty. After attending the Idaho Cattlemen’s College, you will have a few tips and tricks in your back pocket to call on down the road.

Convention Speakers Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has been serving as Idaho’s governor since 2007. During his time in office, Governor Otter has exemplified his commitment to the cattle industry; constantly going to bat for Idaho’s cattle producers. Prior to taking office, Governor Otter served three terms in Congress representing Idaho’s 1st District from 2001 to 2006.

When elected to Congress, Governor Otter was serving his fourth term as Idaho’s Lieutenant Governor. Governor Otter is a father of four and a grandfather

of six. He is married to the former Lori Easley of Kimberly.

Tom has also held the position as Director of Market Research for CattleFax and the Director of Analytical Services for Emerge Interactive.

Tom is the founder of Top Dollar Angus, which was introduced to the beef industry in the summer of 2014. He and his wife reside in Brighton, Colo.

Brooks Dame grew up in Ontario, Ore., and started his company, Proof Eyewear, in his garage in 2011. He grew the business from a laptop and a few pairs of sunglasses to what it is today. Just four years later, Proof Eyewear is an international success with retail outlets in more than 20 countries and celebrity customers including Beyoncé and Karl Malone. Convention Speakers Glen Klippenstein was the founder and operator of Glenkirk Farms for 27 years, showing and selling seed stock in 50 states and 22 countries. Glen was CEO of the American Chianina Association, Chairman of the National Beef Promotion and Research Board, and served as Director of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Glen was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on the Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation Board.

Brian Klippenstein has worked in the cattle business from Canada to Argentina. After earning his degree in Business, Economics, and Public Policy from George Washington University, Brian spent 26 years on Capitol Hill.

He is currently the Executive Director of Protect the Harvest.

James E Risch currently serves as Idaho’s 28th Senator, with 40 years of experience in elected office.

Senator Risch was elected to the United States Senate in November of 2008, after serving as Idaho State Senator, Lieutenant Governor and Governor.

He currently serves on five senate committees, including the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, giving Idaho a continued voice in legislation that dramatically shapes the West. Senator Risch and his wife live on a ranch outside of Boise, and are longtime members of the Idaho Cattle Association.

Representative Raul Labrador was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Las Vegas, Nev. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, he earned his law degree from the University of Washington in Seattle and established a successful law practice with offices in Boise and Nampa. Representative Labrador served as an Idaho Legislator from 2006 to 2011, and was elected to Congress in 2010, where he serves as Idaho’s District 1 representative. Convention Speakers Brandon Woolf grew up working on his grandfather’s dairy farm in Whitney, Idaho. He began in the Idaho State Controller’s Office as an intern in 1997, and was appointed chief of staff for State Controller Donna Jones in 2011. Woolf was appointed temporary acting State Controller by Gov. Otter in May 2012, a position made permanent in October of the same year. He was elected by the people of Idaho to the position of State Controller in 2014, and was sworn in for his first full term in January of this year. He and his wife, Janalee, have three children.

Travis Arp, Ph.D, is the Technical Services Manager for the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), covering the Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

Travis started with USMEF in October, 2012, where he is responsible for technical related market access issues and working with USMEF members, USMEF foreign offices, and the U.S. government to improve market access for U.S. red meat exporting companies.

Dr. Arp received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri in Agriculture Economics and Public Policy in 2008. He then worked on a Master of Science degree in Meat Science at the University of Florida, conducting research on animal stress effects on meat quality. After completing his M.S. in 2010, he completed a Ph.D. in Meat Science at Colorado State University in 2012. His dissertation research focused on growth promoting technologies in beef feedlot cattle and the effects on carcass yield and beef quality. Dr. Arp’s family owns and operates a purebred and commercial cattle operation in north-central Missouri, and is originally from Madison, Wis. Brian Oakey, Deputy Director In March 2007, Brian became the Deputy Director at ISDA. Brian’s duties as deputy director include advising the Director, Chief of Staff and administrators on policy related matters and representing the department in interagency and constituent negotiations as assigned by the Director. He previously worked with the Idaho Attorney General’s office representing and advising the ISDA on legal matters. He received a B.S. degree in Animal Science from Brigham Young University in 1999, a Juris Doctorate degree from Drake University in 2002 and a Master of Laws degree in Agricultural Law from the University of Arkansas in 2003. While attending law school Brian served as the Drake Agricultural Law Society President and the Editor-in-Chief of the Drake Journal of Agricultural Law.

Convention Speakers Dr. Bill Barton is the Administrator/ State Veterinarian, for the Idaho State Department of Agriculture, Division of Animal Industries. He joined the ISDA as a veterinary medical officer in December 2006 and was appointed State Veterinarian in February 2008.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Barton co-owned the Donnelly Veterinary Hospital—a mixed animal practice in Donnelly, Idaho—until 2005. After selling his practice, he moved to Boise, Idaho.

Dr. Barton was raised on his family’s ranch in the Three Creek area of southern Idaho and northern Nevada. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science. He received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Kansas Sate University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989.

His professional memberships include the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Idaho Veterinary Medical Association, The United States Animal Health Association, and The National Assembly of State Animal Health Officials. Dr. Barton is a past-president of the Western States Livestock Health Association.

Dr. Barton is the proud father of a son and daughter, both attending the University of Idaho.

Barry Burnell has been the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality’s Water Quality Division Administrator. since August 2004. Barry has a bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science from the University of Minnesota, and has completed graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin – LaCrosse.

Barry has worked for the DEQ since August 1990. Prior to being appointed to the Water Quality Division Administrator position he was the Ground Water Program Manager (February 2004 – August 2004), Life Sciences, Discipline Lead (1999 – 2004); Watershed Protection Supervisor (1996-1999); and a Sr. Water Quality Analyst (1990-1996 Water Quality Bureau).

Did You Know: Computer Companies, Beef Producers Share Common Need?

Both Industries Must Keep Up with the Millennials

by Idaho Beef Council n 1985 a product called Windows was developed by Microsoft, a small company that would go public the next year. The Apple Macintosh had been invented the year before.

At about that same time, beef producers were developing a self-help program called the Beef Checkoff Program, which was part of the 1985 Beef Promotion and Research Act. Collections on the $1-perhead mandatory program began in 1986.

In Idaho, the checkoff is now $1.50-perhead after the Idaho Legislature passed an additional $0.50-per-head checkoff in 2009.

While beef and bytes wouldn’t seem to have much in common, the computer and beef industries are more similar than you think.

They both must appeal to today’s consumers, and make sure they stay relevant in a fast-changing world.

industry has developed: ways to communicate with a millennial audience wanting immediate response. Today in the beef industry it’s doing it with a digital marketing campaign that targets consumers with messages through their computers and smartphones. Unlike mass media, the campaign focuses on individuals needing beef information, or who would benefit from specific beef information.

With banner ads, search advertising, a Facebook page, collaboration with other websites and other cuttingedge techniques, the checkoff is reaching the targeted millennial audience.

Changing with the Times Throughout its history, however, the Beef Checkoff Program has used a variety of strategies to boost beef demand. Since it was instituted 29 years ago, the program has been responsible for numerous successful efforts that have improved consumer attitudes about beef. Here are five:

• Food safety was a key industry concern when the Beef Checkoff Program created a Blue Ribbon Task Force on E. coli O157:H7 in 1994. Checkoff-funded research since then has led to multiple interventions throughout the beef supply chain, helping reduce microbe-causing illnesses to levels surpassing government goals.

Consumer confidence in beef was again further tested in late 2003, when a case of BSE was found in the U.S. cattle herd.

Thanks in part to the Beef Checkoff Program, confidence rose from 89 percent before the case was found to 91 percent immediately after.

Exports are important to the success of U.S. beef, since 96 percent of the world’s population lives outside of the country’s borders. That’s why the checkoff helps promote beef in 80 different countries worldwide. Beef exports represent about 18 percent of carcass value, according to Cattle-Fax, and in 2014 were valued at $7.13 billion, which was an increase of 16 percent over the previous record set in 2013. That’s almost $1 billion in added beef exports. Cattle-Fax says exports add $300 to the value of a fed U.S. beef carcass.

• New beef products were the focus of the industry through its checkoff in 2003. By 2004 all major packers were harvesting the shoulder clod, which produces the Petite Tender, Flat Iron Steak and Ranch Cut Steak. By 2005, foodservice outlets had sold 47 million pounds of Flat Iron Steaks – which surpassed the Porterhouse Steak in foodservice volume. Overall during the year, 106 million pounds of Beef Value Cut steaks were sold, helping to increase the value of undervalued cuts. Introduction of the Flat Iron Steak and Denver Cut alone added $50-$70 to the value of the carcass.

• The “Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner” campaign was introduced in May of 1992 with advertising that featured the voice of actor Robert Mitchum. By 1994 the campaign had reached 98 percent of consumers 25 times. Though it has a different communications focus, the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner theme remains popular today, with a key website providing a foundation for recipes, tips and
