Brian Edward Fedewa, age 72, of Portland, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2025.
Pamela Pontius, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the age of sixty-four on Thursday, March 6, 2025. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Edith and Roderick McQueen, and her brothers, Roderick and Rick McQueen. Pamela is survived by her children, Mandy Johnson (Mike Dubay), Jamie Schafer (Darren), and Douglas Thursby (Krista); her grandchildren, Justice, Miguel, Aleister, Emily, Ameliana, Nikolai, Linaea, Nelliel, Makayla, and Thomas; and her great-grandchild, Aries. She also leaves behind her cherished cat, Darlin’. Born and raised in the South Bend/Osceola, Indiana area, Pamela later moved to Michigan with her family, where she became deeply involved in the community. Family meant everything to Pamela. She dedicated herself to caring for her loved ones, whether that meant taking care of them in times of illness, attending her grandchildren’s activities, or enjoying simple moments with her family, such as Goodwill shopping trips or relaxing with her beloved cat. Pamela had a passion for fashion, jewelry, and all things “pretty.” She took great pride in looking classy, and her favorites were blush pink, purple, gold, and houndstooth print. A skilled seamstress from a young age, Pamela honed her craft as she grew older, eventually owning her own bridal and formal wear business. She made the wedding dresses for all three of her children and countless Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. Each Christmas, she lovingly made pajamas for her grandchildren and used any extra funds to donate pajamas to Toys 4 Tots. Pamela often referred to her sewing ability as a “God-given talent” and used it to bless her family and others.
Pamela was raised in the Pentecostal faith but later became a devoted Catholic after finding a sense of belonging at Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Ionia. She became a passionate greeter at her parish, always welcoming others with a warm smile and open heart. Her faith was a central part of her life and was truly her identity. Despite facing challenges of her own, Pamela always had a special place in her heart for the less fortunate. She was especially moved by the plight of the homeless and worked tirelessly to help them find shelter, housing, and resources. Through her partnership with Saints Peter and Paul’s Friends of Jesus, she made a difference in the lives of many. Pamela will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but we take comfort in knowing that she is now at home with Jesus, one of the “lucky ones.”
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Thomas Brown at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 434 High St., Ionia. Rite of Committal will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, Indiana. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Tuesday at the church. A luncheon will follow the Mass in the Apostles Hall. For those wishing, memorial contributions may be made to SS. Peter and Paul Friends of Jesus, c/o Ionia Ministerial Association, 434 High Street, Ionia, MI 48846 in memory of Pamela. Online condolences may be made at www. lehmanfuneralhomes.com.

If you’re just beginning your career, what are your financial priorities?
You might have student loans to deal with. And you may even be thinking about saving for a down payment on a house. These are certainly significant issues, and yet, you shouldn’t ignore your long-term goals, such as retirement — which is why you may want to get started as an investor. And as you invest, consider these suggestions:
1. Take advantage of your opportunities. Even while addressing your other concerns, such as loan payments, you may well have space in your life to invest — if you take advantage of the opportunities presented to you. For example, if you work for a business that offers a 401(k) or other retirement plan, try to put in as much as you can afford, or at least enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. And you may find that contributing to a traditional 401(k) or similar plan is more affordable than you think, as your contributions may be deductible, lowering your taxable income.
2. Think long-term. Some people
make the mistake of seeking shortterm gains by trying to “time” the market — that is, they try to “buy low and sell high.” While this is a great strategy in theory, it’s almost impossible to follow, as no one can really predict market highs and lows. The most successful investors follow a long-term strategy and don’t jump in and out of the market.
3. Know your risk tolerance. Your investment choices should be based partially on your risk tolerance. Typically, the more investment risk you take on, the greater the potential reward, but it works the other way, too — riskier investments can result in greater losses, at least in the short term. You need to find a risk level with which you are comfortable. Also, your risk tolerance can change over time — when you get close to retirement, for instance, you might want to invest more conservatively than you did when you still had decades ahead of you in the working world.
4. Diversify your investments. The financial markets affect different investments in different ways, which means that, at any given time, some investments
will perform better than others. But if you only owned one type of investment or asset class, your portfolio could suffer if a market downturn had a particularly strong effect on that investment or asset. By spreading your investment dollars among a range of investments, you’ll have more opportunities for success, and you can help reduce the effects of market volatility on your holdings. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.
5. Prepare for the unexpected. You don’t always know when you’ll face a large expense, such as a medical bill or a major home repair. If you’re not prepared, you could be forced to dip into your longterm investments, such as your 401(k), to pay for these costs. To help avoid this problem, you may want to take steps such as keeping a cushion of cash in your portfolio and building an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account. By putting these moves to work, you can help yourself make progress on an investment journey that could last a lifetime.
While it certainly can be fun to visit a pub and raise a pint in honor of St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, such efforts are not necessarily a family-friendly way to commemorate the patron saint of the Emerald Isle. Thankfully, there are plenty of activities for children and adults that focus less on imbibing and more on hands-on fun so everyone can be involved equally. Crafting often fits that bill. The following are some unique craft ideas to celebrate the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. Many of these projects include items you may already have around the house.
SHAMROCK KEY CHAIN
Find your favorite salt dough recipe and use a shamrock cookie cutter to cut out the shape of a lucky clover. Poke a hole at the top where you can connect a key ring. When the shamrock is dried and hardened, paint it in a vivid shade of green. Attach keys, a school ID or anything else to the key ring, or simply hang it from a backpack.
LEPRECHAUN HATS
With a little green paint, green card stock and construction paper in black and gold, anyone can create
miniature leprechaun hats. Paint the toilet paper tube green, then wrap the bottom in a strip of black and place a gold “buckle” made out of a rectangle of gold or yellow paper. Glue the tube to a round of green card stock, and voila, you have a perfect leprechaun hat for decorating a room or table.
Easy rainbow craft
Grab some fruity O-shaped cereal and let kids sort the colors into red, orange, yellow, green, and purple. Glue rows of these colored cereal rings onto a piece of white cardstock to make the rainbow. At the base of the rainbow, glue some cotton balls to serve as the clouds.
BEADED BRACELETS
Visit a craft store and stock up on small green, white and gold beads, as well as some bracelet wire or poly string. Spend a few hours making bracelets that everyone can wear with their green attire for St. Patrick’s Day. The bracelets also can be given as gifts.
SHAMROCK SLIME
Those who can find green glitter glue and shamrock confetti can turn their favorite slime recipe into one worthy of St. Patrick’s Day.
Incorporate some of the marshmallows from a favorite “lucky” cereal brand into the mix of rice cereal treats to give them a rainbow-inspired upgrade.
POTS OF GOLD
If you have leftover plastic witches’ cauldrons from Halloween, paint them gold and use them to store foil-wrapped chocolate coins. Otherwise, tie green helium-filled balloons to the cauldron to make a perfect centerpiece.
St. Patrick’s Day crafts get the entire family in on the fun of celebrating the Emerald Isle. TF253722
