PREFACE First I like to thank everyone for their positive reactions on the first ICPBC magazine. The ICPBC magazine is the magazine for and about ICPBC Professional Bitfit Consultants and everyone that is interested in horses welfare. The first magazine was mostly in Dutch. This time it will be mostly in English. The Dutch part you will find from page 16 Since the last magazine a lot has happened. More and more people awknowledge the bennefits of a ICPBC Bitfit Consultant: A bitfitter with a whole body approach. There is a lot of interest from country’s all over the world (UK, Australia, South Africa, America, New Zealand, Mexico) thank you so much for your interest! In the Netherlands we have been busy promoting the ICPBC, since the ICPBC is the only college that has a founder with experience in both years of bitfitting and years of treating horses with muscle therapy , cranio sacral and osteopathy. So the links she can make between the horses body and the influence on the bit make sure students will get great insights.
What else? The promised information for students internationally. The main subject of this magazine is the tight noseband. A lot has allready been said about tying the noseband in horse welfare studies all over the world, but why is it not banned yet and when is the noseband too tight? Experts in their field like grand prix judge Paulien Knols, dentist and chiropractor Madelon van der Krocht, grand prix rider Laurien van der Meer, FEI steward Elisabeth Williams and more will share their opinion Happy reading!

ICPBC THE ENGLISH YEAR COURSE
We are proud to have so much attention from all over the world. The first year allready started succesfully and it took a while to get everything translated in English. As promised we will give you the information about the English version. Most probably we will start in May 2017. We know there is always a lot of travelling involved when you want to gain knowledge in another country. Therefore the English version is the same in content but longer modules, so less traveling is involved. The English version has a larger e-learning part than the Dutch one. This will give you the opportunity to study more at home. The hand on modules will be given in the Netherlands preparing you with the most difficult bitfitting cases like tongue-problems, horses with bit trauma, fitting double bridle, examinating the hyoid, cervical spine. You can read more about this in our course catalog, which is now available info@icpbc.com When you don’t want to become a Professional Bitfit Consultant and you are a physiotherapist or Veterinarian it is also possible for groups to organise CPD courses in your own country or come to the Netherlands

PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT How is the bit positioned in the horses mouth? How does the bit influence the movement of the tongue? Is the tongue pushing against the bit? Is the tongue pulled up? Why is the horse doing this? How does the shape of a certain bit fit the individual horse? The more you practise te more you learn. DENTAL KNOWLEDGE
You don’t need to be a dentist to become a good bitfit consultant, but you do need to recognise certain dental problems that can have a major eect on how the horse is accepting the bit. Daan Staller our dentis; teacher at the Academy of Equine Dentistry, IAED examinator, NvVGP examinator. Certified at the AED, IAED,NvVGP, IGFP. has a broad knowledge of what is important to know as a bitfitter. He sees a lot of damage in horses mouths caused by bits and bit handling. .
The reason Daan is willing to share his knowledge in our programm is because we look from a broad perspective when it comes to bitfitting. We do not create salesmen. Having Daan in our team keeps us focussed on always thinking ahead. Will this change of bit better the horse or are there also disadvantages. Those things are important to know!

STUDY TOGETHER Our students have different backgrounds, but one thing is for sure, they all choose ICPBC because they have horses welfare in mind. There is always opportunity for sharing knowledge.
OSTEOPATHIC INSIGHTS No horse is the same and every horse needs an individual approach. The way a horse reacts to the bit has to do with the horses posture. The ICPBC shares osteopatic insights and learns her students to put as much information as possible into a bitfitting consult. The link between the horses mouth and the body we find in the TMJ (Tempo Mandibular Joint). This joint is important in compensation patterns of the horse and can explain a
lot about how a horse reacts on a bit. When we understand how the body works, we can train better. We create welfare for the horse by making sure that the recommended bitis working in good harmony with the horse.

THE NOSEBAND TIGHT OR LOOSE?

Laurien van der Meer is a Dutch grand prix rider. She and her partner run their own equestrian facility: Het Podium which means The Stage. Het Podium is located in a little town called Starnmeer which lies between Zaandam and Alkmaar. Their main business is training horses from start to grand prix level and coaching competitive riders located at their facility.
THE RIDER
The past few years I have been thinking a lot about all the discussions that are going on in the dressage community. One of them is the use of the noseband. As a competition-rider I am confronted with the situation that judges give penalties when a horse opens its mouth. Of course I understand that in the ideal situation, the mouth of the horse stays closed during all the exercises. But here is the catch: you can MAKE your horse to keep his mouth closed by tightening the noseband! So a lot of horses, which try to open their mouth, are being prevented to do so by the tightness of their nosebands. That is artificial harmony‌. But, you do not get the penalties for an open mouth, so it pays off. The riders who do not want to tighten their nosebands (because it inflicts damage and pain to a horse) are confronted with more frequent penalties than riders who do not care about the wellbeing of their horses and just pull that noseband tight. I would say: artificial harmony is NO harmony! I would rather see a horse that opens its mouth because there is still space in the noseband to do so, than a horse that is not even able to open its mouth at all. But the second group always gets the higher scores because their problem is concealed. And that is not what I call Fair Play or a level playing field!

THE RIDER
The only solution to this problem and the only solution to establish a level playing field regarding to this subject, is to make rules on how tight a noseband may be and also to uphold these rules. And this means active supervision on competitions: a standard noseband check before or immediately after the test. This being said I would also like to point out that some judges tend to be too focused on the mouth of the horse and give an insufficient mark whenever they see an open mouth, probably just because that is the easiest way to go. But it does not always mean the horse is protesting or that the rider pulls on the reins too hard.

Some horses open their mouths really easily and other horses never open their mouths, not even when you pull the reins as hard as you can. If the noseband-rule is implemented, judges will be confronted with a lot more open mouths and need to be able to distinguish the good from the bad. As if judging was not difficult enough already… But that is a whole new discussion!

TYP HIER OM TEKST IN TE VOEREN On paper we all agree the noseband was originally intended to help the riders rein aids, to prevent the horse from opening its mouth too wide and refrain itself from the riders hands, thus making schooling of the horse easier, and occasionally safer for both. In current days however the noseband is being used as a complete restrictive instrument, not to help with the schooling but to subject the horse to training without any dialogue between horse and rider. An open mouth was indicative of a horse with mental or physical imbalances which was refraining itself from the riders rein influences. The open mouth is subjected to negative dressage test scores, giving reason for riders to try and prevent this from happening, not only inside the competition arena but also on the training premises. Through time the open mouth of the horse was seen as something that had to be prevented at all times and at all costs and is not considered a form of communication by the horse anymore. Riders and trainers look past the reason for opening the mouth and only prevent its occurrence. We should not exclusively consider the opening of the mouth a method of avoiding reinaids but also as a feedback for all the given aids and a feedback for the used method of schooling and training the horse. In an effort to prevent the horse from opening its mouth the noseband on various occasions will restrict and influence a lot of biomechanical aspects of head and neck posture and limb movement of the horse. Various nosebands work in different ways but too much restriction on maxilla and mandible will give the same results.
We can look at these influences in a static and a dynamic way. We can look at which structures of the head are being directly influenced by the noseband; skin, fascia, muscles, blood vessels, nerves and eventually even bones.
TYP HIER OM TEKST IN TE VOEREN Theses influences are clearly seen and illustrated in common anatomy pictures and recent dynamic studies(2,3,4). The development of anatomical nosebands show a better understanding of structures of the equine head and neck (5). A dynamic approach of interpreting function of the noseband will tell us that the noseband when used improperly influences breathing (drop nosebands), restrict tongue movement (and swallowing) thus restricting the hyoid bone, this influences all its muscle attachments (for example the m. omohyoideus (connecting the supscapular fascia and the basihyoid) the m. sternohyoid and m.sternothyroideus (connecting with the sternum) thus directly influencing the action of the forelimb (5), it restricts the caudorostral movement of the mandible. The caudo-rostral movement of the mandible is necessary for the horse when bringing its head down. The mandible needs to be capable of gliding in relation to the maxilla. This directly influences the m. Sternocephalicus and it's origin on the sternum.

Common restrictions for this movement are dental pathologies (for example; abnormalities of the incisors, hooks, ramps, protuberances of the cheek teeth and excessive transverse ridging of the cheek teeth) but the overtightening of the noseband will also prevent this motion. Making it impossible for the horse to have a normal rostro-caudal movement will result in adaptations in the horses body in order to still compel to the various asked head and neck positions in dressage training. Without the gliding motion in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) the horse will compensate in various cervical areas. Depending on the asked head and neck position the horse will (over)compensate in C0-C1, C3-4 areas as well as lower cervical areas, this will also influence the cervical thoracic junction (CTO/CTJ), depending on the angle of upright head position. The influences of this restriction on for instance the connecting fascia throughout the horses body and the influences of the overcompensating areas on the musculature can be understood and should be taking in on aspect when looking at individual horses. Damage to the area of the noseband in the cheekmucosa can be seen regularly on dental inspections, this is commonly seen when a horse hasn't had regular dental maintenance, but it is even possible with proper dental maintenance to see damage of the cheek mucosa with over tightening of the noseband. It would most certainly benefit horses if riders were more aware of the structures they influence when (ab)using the noseband and to look further past keeping the horses mouth closed.

THE STEWARD

Elisabeth H. Williams is FEI Dressage Chief Steward level 3 and FEI Dressage Deputy Steward General. Elisabeth is a well known chief steward of the FEI. About noseband tightness Elisabeth is clear: It used to be much worse. It is not so much an issue anymore. This off course is a good sign. It differs a lot between different countries, but it is better than it used to be. To get through the noseband check, you have to fit two fingers in. This is messured not at the top of the naselbone but more to the side. Off course the check depends on how thick your fingers are. The two finger recommendation was open to interpretation and therefore removed. An important yardstick for measuring the tightness is look for bulging around the noseband. When the skin of the horse is bulging; the noseband is too tight. Padding is also important. If the horse has extra padding under the noseband on the naselbone and onder
the chin, this changes the tightness on the sides of the bridle. Without extra padding it feels more tight. As a steward it is important to watch the groom. The groom is not allowed to loosen up the noseband or wiping the horses mouth before the bitcheck. Elisabeth thinks professional bitfit consultants would be great to have in the United States of America because both she and her college Walter Bagley (on picture) see a lot of bits that are way to big or too small. If the bits would be fitted correctly maybe more nosebands would be loose and mouths would be less open. There is definitately a need.
THE JUDGE Pauline Knols is a grand prix judge and internationally operating dressage instructor. As a judge she sees tied nosebands on a regular basis in the competition arena. What is her opinion about this subject?
I’am a proponent of riding with a more loose noseband than regularly seen. When the noseband is tight, opening of the mouth and tongue problems are concealed. Therefore it is more difficult to judge. Not every movement of the tongue or opening of the mouth is wrong and as a judge you should know the difference between bit-handling problems and situations in which a horse is just concentrating on a difficult exercise. The noseband is not made to conceal issues and problems of the horse. As a judge I can recognize the really tight nosebands by far. These horses tend to shake their heads a little from the left to the right. But since there are no clear rules my hands are tied.

There are many studies done about noseband tightness in competition. Lately researchers found out that only 7% of horses in competitions had noseband tightened to within the recommended limit. The issue is that the recommend limit is not as clear as it looks. A lot of welfare organizations who have the best interest with the horses, just like a lot of us judges and riders, have made recommendations, but without clear and solid rules we cannot make a change. The FEI removed the guideline that required a two finger size gap to be present under the horses’ nosebands arguing that the measurement was imprecise. The two finger rule does leave a lot of space for differences in application. Not every finger is just as thick, not everybody uses the same place to measure. When you put your fingers more to the sides of the noseband, the noseband can still be tight on the nasal bone. You also see people measuring with two fingers next to each other instead of on top of each other. According to the shape of the individual horses head,

band that is pressing on the cheekbone). This cannot be comfortable.
On some horses the noseband will be so loose with the two finger rule correctly on the nasal bone that there is no use of the noseband at all. So even with measuring correctly the two finger rule will not always give comparable results.
Any rule that is open to a number of different interpretations will give discussion. To avoid discussion you need explicit) rules. As a judge I have to work with rules.
You see the same with the height of the noseband. We learned the noseband should also be two fingers under the cheekbone. At least the cheekbone is pretty easy to find on a horse, so this is a little bit less interpretable. Still you see a lot of horses with a nose-
Off course I also have my own interpretation of how tight…. or better to say how loose a noseband should be, but as long as it is not prescribed clearly, my hands are tied… and in a lot of times…….so is the noseband!
Without clear and solid rules we cannot make a change.

DE FEDERATIE VERTEGENWOORDIGER
Paul van der Nat treedt naast verschillende bestuurlijke functies binnen de KNHS met grote regelmaat op als federatievertegenwoordiger bij nationale concoursen in verschillende disciplines.
Met verwondering en verbazing zie ik soms de meest bijzondere optomingen en bitten voorbij komen waarvan ik mij vaak afvraag of zij het effect hebben die de ruiter of amazone verwacht. Het valt mij tevens op dat (veelal verkeerd) gebruik en verwachtingen uit onwetendheid voortkomen. Het doel is in vrijwel alle gevallen erop gericht om letterlijk de mond te snoeren van het paard en niet paardenwelzijn. PHOTOGRAPHY:InStyle Graag schets ik hier enkele voorbeelden die ik recentelijk ben tegengekomen. Als eerste is het gebruik van de lage neusriem weer in opkomst. (Inter)nationaal rijden zeer veel pony combinaties (dressuur, springen en eventing) met deze lage neusriem. Het gebruik van deze neusriem op zich is prima en vriendelijk, maar verkeerd gebruik (en dat komt helaas steeds meer voor) is niet in het belang van paardenwelzijn. De twee belangrijkste vormen van onjuist gebruik zijn een neusriem die TE laag om de neus ligt, waardoor de neusriem niet meer op het neusbot ligt. Dit uit zich onder meer door snuiven en opgezette neusgaten. Het andere probleem is het gegeven dat met een lage neusriem gepoogd wordt om het opensperren van de mond te voorkomen. Dit leidt tot veel te strak aangetrokken neusriemen,waarbij het (bijna) niet meer mogelijk is om twee vingers te plaatsen tussen het neusbot en de neusriem.
Het laatste zien we ook bij gebruik van de hoge neusriem. In combinatie met het gebruik van een sperriem wordt vaak de sperriem zo strak aangetrokken dat ook hier de twee vingers nauwelijks tussen de riem en het paard kan worden geplaatst. Als er geen sperriem wordt gebruikt zoals bij het gebruik van een stang en trens hoofdstel, moet de hoge neusriem deze functie overnemen teneinde opnieuw te voorkomen dat de mond zich openspert. Hierbij doet zich nog iets anders voor. Het gebruik van stang en trens is bedoeld om het paard met verfijndere hulpen te ondersteunen in zijn oefeningen. Hierbij is het van belang dat beide bitten vrij kunnen bewegen in de mond en op de goede plek liggen. Strak vastgehouden stangen die ook nauwelijks kunnen schakelen, dragen hier niet aan bij. En al helemaal niet als de stang bovenop de trens in de mond ligt, zoals ik onlangs heb mogen vaststellen op een tweetal concoursen in de subtop.

DE FEDERATIE VERTEGENWOORDIGER
Hoewel in de springsport gebruik van optomingen niet in eerste aanleg zijn gericht op het voorkomen van het opensperren van de mond, zijn er wel zeer veel verschillende bitten en hoofdstellen in gebruik gericht op het beter laten springen van het paard. Ik zie daarbij de meest bijzondere “buitenboord” maaksels voorbijkomen. Hierbij is het niet altijd objectief vast te stellen of paardenwelzijn gediend is, daarvoor ontbreekt (ondanks scholing) ook bij officials de kennis.
Moeten we niet gaan nadenken over een trendbreuk, zowel nationaal als internationaal?
Het gebruik van de verschillende harnachementen en bitten is regelmatig trend gebonden. Als topruiter A iets nieuws gebruikt, zullen fans vaak volgen. Of zoals een Nederlandse top springruiter ooit na afloop van een concours zei, als we als Nederlandse equipe allemaal weer met een gewoon trens hoofdstel gaan rijden, volgt het grootste deel ons voorbeeld. In bovenstaande schets ik dat te strak aangetrokken neusriemen in het algemeen worden toegepast om te voorkomen dat de paardenmond zich opent tijdens de proef. In de dressuur willen we dat beeld graag zien, een gesloten paardenmond. Als paardenwelzijn steeds belangrijker wordt en een te lage of te strak aangetrokken neusriem niet vriendelijk is, moeten we dan niet gaan nadenken over een trendbreuk, zowel nationaal als internationaal? Waarom zou een paard tijdens een oefening niet zijn mond mogen openen of het puntje van zijn tong naar buiten mogen steken, als hij zijn best aan het doen is? Als mens doen we dat toch ook; wie kent bijvoorbeeld niet die prachtige actiefoto’s van Michael Jordan met uitgestoken tong als hij aankomt vliegen voor zijn zoveelste ‘Air’-dunk!

Veel mensen snoeren de neusriem aan omdat het paard de mond opent. Een vraag die je jezelf als eigenaar moet stellen is of het paard de mond opent vanuit inspanning, verkeerd lichaamsgebruik, te zware teugelvoering, een ongunstige bouw, lichamelijke blokkades of vanwege ongemak op het bit. Zolang de oorzaak niet wordt aangepakt is aansnoeren een lapmiddel. Een middel wat het eigenlijke probleem verbergt en nieuwe problemen creĂŤert.
lar joint) en ook zeker het kopstuk, waaronder zich de aanhechting van het lig. nuchae bevindt. En wat te denken van de oren waar het kopstuk strak tegenaan wordt getrokken, en dan vooral als het kopstuk ook nog eens anatomisch niet helemaal mooi klopt.
Als de neusriem te strak zit zie je dat de huid rond de neusriem opbolt. Dit zorgt vaak weer voor beschadigingen aan de buitenkant van de mond en wangen omdat de bitringen hier sneller langs schuren. Ook de hele dikke neusriemen zijn daarmee niet altijd handig.
Helaas is een twee vinger regel gemeten vanaf het neusbeen niet consistent, zelfs niet als iedereen even dikke vingers zou hebben. Bij het ene paard zal de neusriem dan mooi zitten maar bij een ander zo los waardoor aan de gehele functie van de neusriem voorbij wordt gegaan.
De structuren onder de neusriem zoals huid, fascia, zenuwen, boedvaten en bot zijn niet de enige die onder spanning komen te staan bij het aansnoeren. Vergeet niet dat een hoofdstel een geheel is en door het aansnoeren het hoofdstel ook strakker komt te liggen langs de jukbeenderen, over de TMJ (tempo-mandibu-

De start.... Het was natuurlijk een hele stap om vanuit PassendBit een opleiding te starten. Maar wel een logische stap. Er was vraag naar een opleiding en ikzelf had behoefte aan collega’s in diverse regio’s om bij individuele aanvragen naar te kunnen doorverwijzen. Voor één paard naar het puntje van Nederland rijden is vaak niet haalbaar. Van belang daarbij was het niet gebonden zijn aan enig bittenmerk en het breder kunnen kijken dan alleen naar het bit. Een ICPBC professional bitfit consultant kan dit en leert de linken die gelegd kunnen worden vanuit het lichaam naar het bit en andersom. Alle ervaring opgedaan in de afgelopen jaren met Passendbit wordt gedeeld. Er wordt niet opgeleid tot bittenverkoper van een bepaald merk of merken, maar er is een duidelijk welzijnsperspectief. Dat vind ik belangrijk en gelukkig zie ik dit ook terug in de eerste groep die
nu bezig is met de opleiding. Uiteindelijk trek je als opleiding ook die mensen aan die bij je visie passen. Iedereen bedankt voor het vertrouwen en natuurlijk hun stem! Omdat de opleiding nog jong is, zijn wij dan ook super trots op de vele positieve reacties en is de 3e plaats in de horse product of the year nominatie een kers op de taart. Vooral omdat wij de meeste publieksstemmen hebben gekregen. Dit is wat voor ons telt! Jullie vertrouwen en jullie mening en ik kan het niet vaak genoeg zeggen: Iedereen bedankt!!!

In Holland and Belgium, Natascha van Eijk has made a full-time profession of bit fitting horses and educating people about bit-related problems. Natascha also specialises in muscle therapy and manipulation of the spine.
hoosing the correct bit for your horse is part science, part trial and error, and largely part experience. There are other aspects of the horse, such as physical challenges, that can cause problems with accepting the bit. Natascha is able to address these issues, since muscle therapy and manipulation of the horse’s spine are also part of her profession. Bit fitting is essential for any horse belonging to any discipline, competitive or not. In this series, Natascha van Eijk will take you through some aspects that will make you more aware of how a bit should fit and how proper bit fitting can make a difference to your horse’s comfort and rideability.
Understanding the horse’s mouth There are numerous types and variations of horse bits available, and choosing the right one is not always simple. It all starts with knowledge of the anatomy of the horse’s mouth. A horse may not respond the way we think he should to a given bit
The bars
In Holland especially, you will see that the horses are bred with very small and fine little heads, but their tongues are proportionately bigger most of the time. With a thick tongue that takes up most of the horse’s mouth, there’s not a lot of room left for the bit. The ideal that a thicker bit is kinder just simply doesn’t work for these horses. They need a thinner bit or a more curved mouthpiece to be the most comfortable. The way to check if your horse has a thick tongue is to lift up his lips when the mouth is shut, as shown in the picture. If the tongue is bulging between the teeth, then the horse has a thick tongue.
The space where the bit rests on the horse’s gums is what we call the bars. This toothless area is often found injured or bruised as a result of the wrong choice of bit or by incorrect bit handling. Check the bars by running your finger over them. I mostly use my thumb for this. My advice is to keep your thumb low and not stick it up while doing this, especially when close to the first molar. The bars should feel smooth and flat. The width of the bars is important for choosing the correct bit, especially if you are using double-jointed bits. The middle part of the bit shouldn’t be wider than the width of the bars. Most horses prefer a middle part that is just as wide or smaller than the width of the bars.
The palate
choice. This is because each horse is an individual. Different bits apply pressure to different areas and every horse has different sensitivities. To know which area is the most sensitive, a professional bit fitter will have to come out and assess the horse’s mouth, and will feel for sore spots. Checking the mouth is something you can also do yourself. It takes experience comparing a lot of horses to know if, for example, a palate is excessively low, low or normal, and more importantly if the palate is an extremely sensitive area for your horse. Let’s start to get a good picture of the most important components of the mouth so that choosing a bit becomes an easier task.

The tongue
The area on the roof of the horse’s mouth is what we call the palate. Some horses have low palates and almost no arch, while others have a lot of arch. The more space the better when it comes to bit fitting. The thickness of the bit is determined by the space that is left between the tongue and the palate. A commonly made mistake with a thick tongue is choosing a bit with a high port to keep the pressure off the tongue. It is important to make sure that there is this extra space between the tongue and the palate for this high port, or else the horse will start ‘stargazing’ as a result of the bit pressing against the palate. During a bit fitting, the sensitivity and bruising of the palate can tell me most of the time which bit is used by the rider.
Mouth fissure When it comes to how high you should hang the bit, most trainers tell you that when a bit is adjusted correctly there are two wrinkles in the corner of the horse’s mouth. This is not always true. It depends on the length of the mouth fissure and the skin of the lips. Tougher skin will wrinkle less than thinner skin. I suggest you use your best judgement and experience with what works for your horse. Just make sure the bit is not too low.
Trial and error When you have an idea of the horse’s anatomy, you can start with test-riding a certain bit. The anatomy can only tell you what does or doesn’t fit

in the horse’s mouth; it cannot tell you the horse’s preference, nor the rider’s preference. While riding with another bit, your horse will let you know if the bit is an improvement or not. During the time you spend testing the bits with your bit fitter, you will notice which bit is the most comfortable for both horse and rider. After that you should have at least a 10-day trial to see if you are really happy with the bit, but most of the time the horse is right the first time.
PHRYSO Help from a bit fitter As a professional bit fitter, I will help you to make the correct choice if you are not sure. Watching the horse in movement gives away so much information. A lot of people forget that tension and discomfort in the mouth transfer directly to the muscles of the neck. When the muscles of the neck are tense, lateroflexion of the neck is more difficult. The shoulders will move less freely and the back will be prevented from being raised, which will end up in incorrect hind leg movements. In the long term, horses will get muscle spasms and other impacts on the musculoskeletal system. For these reasons, bit fitting is of utmost importance for any working horse.

Er was het afgelopen jaar veel aandacht door verschillende gerenommeerde paardenmagazines voor de bitfit consultant en de ICPBC. Een teken dat vooral in Nederland het aanmeten van een passendbit al gemeen goed aan het worden is. Er verscheen een artikel over Bitten en lichaamsgebruik in Dressuurmagazine. Een artikel over ICPBC en het biftitten bij Friezen verscheen in Phryso en een uitgebreid artikel over welzijn en bitfitten verscheen in de Hoefslag. Internationaal verscheen de ICPBC in HQ magazine Zuid Afrika met artikelen over bitfitten, de opleiding en wonden die kunnen onstaan door verkeerd bitgebruik en voorbeelden hoe deze te voorkomen. In CAP magazine Belgie verscheen een uitgebreid artikel over het werk van een ICPBC professional bitfit consultant.

Presentatie op het evenement van Paard&Lifestyle / Dressagepro
Naast diverse presentaties bij verenigingen en dressuurstallen, was de ICPBC aanwezig op het evenement Masterclass van Paard&Lifestyle. De ICPBC gaf een presentatie over het onderwerp, hoe beĂŻnvloedt stang en trens de aanleuning. Vanwege de diversiteit van de groep is het belangrijk dat het programma van de modules van de ICPBC aansluit bij de behoefte van de groep. Per jaargang wordt er door middel van evaluaties zo veel mogelijk afstemming gezocht met de groep. Bestaat de groep bijvoorbeeld uit een groep fysiotherapeuten dan kan er een module toegevoegd worden met hands on behandeltechnieken die goed toe te passen zijn bij tongproblemen.
Het correct aanmeten van de trens en ook stang en trens is behandeld. De komende modules zullen meer ingaan op de specifieke aanleuningsproblemen zoals tongproblemen, hoofd/halsproblematiek (gegeven door Henk van der Veen dierenarts aan de Lingenhoeve), de invloed van de ruiter op het bit (door Saskia Heijkants) en alle andere factoren die van belang zijn om bitgerelateerde problemen te kunnen oplossen met diverse gastdocenten.
De leerlingen van de jaargang 2016-2017 hebben ondertussen de eerste 3 modules gevolgd waarbij al diep in de anatomie en biomechanica van het paard is gedoken. Tandheelkunde is gegeven door dierenarts en tandarts Daan Staller en behalve uitleg over tandheelkunde kregen de studenten de mogelijkheid een paardenhoofd in een gedeeltelijke dissectie te onderzoeken.

Linda Mulder: De ICPBC is een zeer waardevolle toevoeging op mijn werk als instructeur en paardensportmasseur, mede ook door de diepgang van de opleiding. Met de kennis die ik opdoe vallen weer vele puzzelstukjes op zijn plaats!! Ik ben dan ook blij dat ik voor deze opleiding gekozen heb!!
BITTEN EN HARNACHEMENT EEN MOOIE COMBINATIE
Jeanette Drent: Ik ben razend enthousiast over de opleiding. De kennis die ik opdoe is behalve voor bitfitten ook te gebruiken in mijn dagelijks werk als zadelmaker. Een correct hoofdstel heeft namelijk ook een enorme invloed op hoe de inwerking van de bitten is en een passend zadel is weer van grote invloed op een goede aanleuning. Kortom alles komt hier samen.

Chrissy Fens: Ik ben inmiddels al jaren actief als dressuur instructrice in mijn regio, eigenlijk wilde ik mij meer gaan verdiepen en specialiseren, maar er waren zoveel en tegelijkertijd zo weinig opleidingen welke aansloten bij mijn wensen en verwachtingen. Bitfitter ‘worden’ was iets waar ik eerder al over na had gedacht, maar de toen bestaande vorm van opleiding leek mij te weinig uitdagend en diepgaand dus had ik het naast mij neergelegd.
DE EERSTE JAARGANG
Ik ben van oorsprong HBO verpleegkundige en dus heb ik kennis en affiniteit met anatomie, fysiologie en processen binnen het lichaam. Maar mijn echte passie ligt al jaren bij de paarden en mijn lesklanten waarvoor ik ook altijd net dat ‘stapje meer’ voor probeer te doen. Ook als KNHS official heb ik geleerd om het paard te beoordelen in hoeverre hij of zij presteert als ‘happy athlete’. Om mijn achtergrond uiteindelijk te kunnen gaan combineren met de paarden leek een droom. Getriggerd door de invalshoek van de International College voor Professional Bitfit Consultants, besloot ik mij in te schrijven voor deze opleiding, een sprong in het diepe en werd zowaar geselecteerd! Spannend was het wel, deze ‘nieuwe carrièremove’. Ik ben best kritisch als het gaat om opleidingen, het moet me wel uitdagen en van dusdanig niveau zijn dat ik mijn best moet gaan doen. Hoe dichterbij het eerste weekend kwam, hoe nerveuzer ik werd, mijn verwachtingen waren immers door mijn enthousiasme torenhoog. Maar… het overtrof mijn verwachtingen. Het was al snel duidelijk. Natascha weet veel, heel veel. Hoewel het eerste weekend voornamelijk anatomie was, gaf Natascha’s enthousiasme ons de motivatie om net zo in de stof te duiken. Ook de andere lesdagen werden gevuld met interessante gastdocenten en lag het niveau hoog. Natascha’s intentie is duidelijk om ons niet alleen te ontwikkelen tot Bitfitters maar vooral goede, onderlegde, Professional Bitfit Consultants die verder kijken dan naar het bit alleen. Vaak wordt er terug gerefereerd naar het gehele paardenlichaam ‘whole body approach’ en worden er connecties gemaakt met de osteopathie en craniosacraaltherapie. Ik voelde me vanaf dag één thuis in deze opleiding en wist al snel dat dit was waar ik al die tijd naar op zoek was. Mijn enthousiasme voor het vak is alleen maar groter geworden en ik weet zeker dat ik, door deze opleiding en de inzet van Natascha als coach, mijzelf ga ontwikkelen tot dè Professional Bitfit Consultant die ik wil zijn en tevens een betere instructeur.

NU EEN AANTAL MAANDEN VERDER IN DE OPLEIDING KAN IK ECHT ZEGGEN, IK WIST NIET DAT IK ZO WEINIG OVER MIJN PAARD WIST! EN HET TRIGGERT ME ALLEEN MAAR OM MEER TE WETEN TE KOMEN!
Kristel van Duren - Bodewes Als Grand Prix amazone, instructrice en ZZ-Licht jury, denk je al heel wat te weten over het hoofd van het paard, het bit en alles wat daar bij komt kijken. Vaak werden er vragen over het bit aan mij gesteld waar ik geen onderbouwd antwoord op kon geven maar meer uit ervaring sprak. Ook ik gebruikte de bitten die ik toevallig nog in de kast had liggen, liep het paard er niet op, probeerde ik pas een andere. Als ik in de winkel naar al die verschillende bitten keek, dacht ik alleen maar; “wat hebben ze nu weer bedacht!�. Met een Zware Tour paard wat een tongprobleem heeft, heb je inmiddels al heel wat geprobeerd en adviezen opgevolgd, maar allemaal zonder resultaat. Ook heb ik in het verleden iemand erbij gehad die aan bitfittingen deed. Die keek helemaal niet naar de mond van mijn paard, maar gaf meteen aan dat het merk wat zij had pas echt goed was. Uiteindelijk bleek dat ik zelf toch op de goede weg was en het niet aan het merk lag. Natuurlijk had ik inmiddels ook van alles uitgeprobeerd, maar nooit erbij gedacht waarom het bit wel of niet goed voor hem zou zijn. Het spookte wel altijd door mijn hoofd dat het probleem niet in de mond zat, maar uit zijn lichaam moest komen.

Ook als jury kom je vaak zaken tegen die je eigenlijk niet wilt zien. Tuurlijk wil je er wat van zeggen maar als je het niet goed kunt onderbouwen, kun je beter je mond houden. Het probleem van mijn paard en van de lesklanten en de problemen die ik als jury tegenkom spoorde mij aan om me er meer in te willen gaan verdiepen. Alsof het zo had moeten zijn kwam de opleiding van ICPBC op mijn pad. En meteen greep het mijn aandacht omdat het veel meer inhield dan het veranderen van een bit. Nu een aantal maanden verder in de opleiding kan ik echt zeggen, ik wist niet dat ik zo weinig over mijn paard wist! En het triggert me alleen maar om meer te weten te komen! Het is ook ongelooflijk hoeveel Natascha van Eijk allemaal weet en zij het ons probeert te leren. Zelfs de anatomie is absoluut niet saai! Ze mag van mij iedere week wel een bijeenkomst houden en ik ben erbij! Daarnaast zorgt zij voor hele kundige gastdocenten, zoals o.a. Daan Staller, Henk van Veen en Saskia Heijkants met elk hun eigen specialisatie. Met de informatie die ik nu al weet kan ik het antwoord op de vragen van mijn lesklanten al veel beter onderbouwen, maar ook zeker in de toekomst het welzijn van het paard helpen te verbeteren als instructrice, als jurylid en straks ook als een icpbc professionele bitfitconsultant !

Pamela Schuurman De ICPBC sluit qua lesstof mooi aan bij wat ik tijdens mijn opleidingen cranio sacraal therapie en sportmassage voor paarden heb geleerd. Het bitfitten kan als mooie aanvulling functioneren om de klant dadelijk een totaal concept te kunnen aanbieden, gezien veel paarden door verkeerd bitgebruik cranio sacrale problemen kunnen krijgen.
