The Project
Hospitality visionary Liz Lambert announced that her team has joined forces with ICON, the leader of advanced construction technologies pioneering large-scale 3D printing, and BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, world renowned architecture firm - to reimagine and rebuild El Cosmico.
Currently a unique 21-acre campground hotel in Marfa, TX. The relocation and expansion of El Cosmico to more than 60 acres will showcase entirely new architectural approaches made possible by large-scale 3D-printing including domes, arches, vaults and parabolic forms. The innovative development will feature El Cosmico guest accommodations in addition to new hospitality programming including a pool, bathhouse, and shared communal facilities.

The Visionaries
“I have had a vision for the evolution of El Cosmico for many years that includes several spaces that add to the experience for guests, locals, and homeowners. In collaborating with the revolutionary thinkers at BIG and ICON, not only do I get to fulfill this dream, but we get to do it using this 3D printing technology that marries the oldest principles of raw earth-based building with a futuristic technology that works more quickly, sustainably and efficiently than modern construction. What’s more, the innovation and beauty of the types of structures we can build extends far beyond the box.
I’m excited that we get to explore this incredible work right here in our own little cosmic landscape under the stars in far West Texas.”

El Cosmico Today
The original El Cosmico is located on 21 acres on the edge of Marfa, Texas. Celebrated hotelier Liz Lambert, the creative force behind Austin’s Hotel San José and Hotel Saint Cecilia, has collaborated with a team of visionary artists and builders to create and artistic campground of vintage trailers, yurts, tents and other nomadic accommodations. More than simply a retreat from the modern world, Lambert’s vision has been to create a living laboratory for artistic, cultural and community experimentation. To that end, the property regularly hosts concerts, art classes, and skills-building workshops.
El Cosmico Reimagined
Located on 61 acres, the future El Cosmico will include 97 accommodations, new hospitality programming including a pool, bathhouse with hammam, restaurant, event spaces, and private residences, known as Sunday Homes.

Sunday Homes
Situated on the new El Cosmico site, Sunday Homes offer the chance to live at the intersection of nature and the arts and culture that define El Cosmico.
Breaking free from the limitations of traditional construction, the curved walls are made possible by the capabilities of ICON’s 3D-printing technology while adding strength and beauty to the overall structure. Sunday Homes are contained within their own circular modules. The kit of parts builds a unique, cloud-like floor plan from the sum of the combined circles.

In its new incarnation, the property will reflect designer Liz Lambert’s long-held vision for the full expression of El Cosmico. Here, the guiding principles of El Cosmico – interconnection, exploration, and opportunities for collective joy –bloom into an ecosystem of amenities that elevate those pursuits.
At the heart of the property, physically and spiritually, will be a central pool and a bathhouse with hammam, sauna, hot tubs, cold plunge and four treatment yurts.
Expanded workshop space is being developed to grow the get-your-hands-dirty offerings that El Cosmico is known for, as a space for artists and residents to explore their creativity, and to offer a flexible space for events. An elevated communal kitchen and firepit are elements of life at El Cosmico that will be re-envisioned for the new property.
A new 4,658 SF structure will be home to a restaurant and bar as the entry point for visitors to El Cosmico overlooking the majestic Davis mountains and serve as a place for residents and locals to gather around the table. The culinary vision will be led by a multiple James Beard Award-nominated chef and native Texan.

GQ: MARFA’S TRANS-PECOS MUSIC FESTIVAL IS THE EPICENTER OF CHILL STYLE
“Every year, a few thousand artists, musicians, and long-haired Texas country boys, bound by the love of good music and great times, descend onto the far-out West Texas town of Marfa. Held for three days and three nights at the psychedelic campground El Cosmico, the Trans-Pecos Festival is famous for its vintage travel trailers and safari tents. Food trucks and a ferris wheel tuck in alongside these photogenic dwellings—it’s a very specific vibe.”
Trans-Pecos Festival of Music & Love
The new El Cosmico will offer a magical setting for weddings, retreats, concerts, seasonal festivals, and other community and private gatherings. The facilities are capable of accommodating groups large and small for everything from intimate affairs to seated dinners for a few hundred guests, with in-house catering services from our award-winning chef. The event structure at the main house will be weatherized, heated and insulated, making it a year-round facility.
El Cosmico will continue to hold its annual Trans-Pecos Festival of Music + Love. The festival hosts a weekend of live music along with workshops and activities, a vendor marketplace and much more. Past artists include St. Vincent, Cat Power, Fiona Apple, Andrew Bird, Iron & Wine, Sleater Kinney, Wilco and many others.
The Trans-Pecos Festival of Music + Love has been the El Cosmico family reunion for 17 years and will continue its annual tradition in its new home.
Far West Texas
Marfa
Marfa, Texas sits at a unique crossroads of rural Southwest culture and international art mecca. The town is equally influenced by its cattle ranching legacy, its proximity to Mexico and the vibrant migration of artists from big cities who have been drawn to Marfa since the early 1970’s for its serenity and mystic quality of light. Here you will see a real cowboy and a major work of art in the same afternoon. What is now desert was once ocean, dinosaur homeland and Apache territory. There is talk of an inexplicable, elusive phenomenon of lights. Marfa sits amidst some of the Southwest’s best natural and built wonders, including Big Bend State and National Parks, McDonald Observatory, Chinati Hot Springs, the Davis Mountains and Balmorhea State Park.
