World first for Tenerife HOUSING ESTATE WITH A DIFFERENCE
L
ooking for a house with a real difference? There’s a new housing estate open for viewing at the ITER (Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables) park in Granadilla, houses individually designed by some of the world’s
leading architects, each one unique in its layout and structure. The launch of this innovative estate took place in the park, which is already home to a large number of projects creating and promoting renewable energies sources. Present,
among others, were Granadilla mayor Carmen Nieves Gaspar Rivero, Island and regional presidents Ricardo Melchior and Paulino Rivero along with many international experts in the fields of renewable energies and bioclimatic dwellings, including one of the pioneers in the latter field,
Professor Gerr y Wrixon from UCC in Ireland, Dr Jos Beurskens, President of the Dutch Energy Research Centre, and architect Carlos Morales and his wife Princess Alexia of Greece. This is the first bioclimatic village in the world, consisting of 25 houses, built following specific criteria, taking into account the climatic conditions of the place, using recycled and recyclable materials, etc, and optimising the environmental conditions including renewable energy
integration, water and waste processing. The project to construct the village is a promotion sponsored by Tenerife Cabildo, ITER and the Architectural Association of the Canar y Islands (COAC) which was launched in 1995 inviting proposals from architects all over the world. Almost 400 projects from professionals in 38 different countries took part in the contest and the winning building was La Geria, designed by César Ruiz-Larrea. Overall the 25 chosen houses come from teams based in Spain, Italy, Belgium, the UK, France, Denmark, Finland, Venezuela, Mexico and the USA. Continues on page 2
