Will La Palma site the TMT telescope after all?

The mayor of Puntagorda in La Palma, Vicente Rodríguez, has set everything in motion to prepare for the eventuality that the newest super telescope will be built in La Palma after all. The Thirty Meter Telescope, known simply as TMT, will be the most advanced and powerful ground-based telescope in history and the largest optical/near-infrared telescope in the Northern hemisphere, by far.

Will the new super telescope be located in the Canary Islands after all?

Elite British University comes to the Islands The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), has opened a research ‘laboratory’ in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Its aim is to work with the various Canary Islands and international contacts to develop intelligent digital solutions and promote the Islands’ potential. Renowned worldwide, this university has already produced 19 Nobel Award winners and 52 Heads of State. The establishment of the research laboratory is supported by both the Island Council and the Canary Islands Government. “This initiative will allow the Canary Islands to take an important step towards the internationalisation of our economy by building a multifaceted economic model, generating new sources of income and skilled jobs” said Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo during his visit at the end of March.

Continued from front page Also present was the senior Director of the LSE, Christian Thiel. Island President Antonio Morales underlined that the London School is to be housed in a building provided by the Island Council which they acquired for €2.5 million. “We are just putting the final touches so that this prestigious British public university, which has already formed 52 state presidents in its rank, can be up and running. It will enhance the island’s external image. It’s an investment in the future” Morales said. Canary Islands President Clavijo sees the LSE as an opportunity to develop great potential and attract the investment of international companies. Numerous multinational companies have already expressed their interest, including four specific enquiries from Wingcopter, Dronemasters, Zipline and Mastercard. In addition, 80 per cent of the LSE students come from outside Britain, which will make the Canary Islands better known as a business location abroad. “We are delighted to be working with the Canary Islands. The archipelago is in a unique

Research University The London School of Economics and Political Science is a global centre for economics and applied science. It’s involved in over 200 projects in 90 countries, regions and cities. In 2014, Research Excellence Framework classified the British School as one of the world’s leading research universities.

Continued from front page La Palma was one of five areas of the world which were tested for potential location of the telescope, but Hawaii actually won the contract. However, ongoing difficulties there have led to La Palma being in the forerunning again, to the point that Mayor Rodríguez sounds pretty convinced that the island will soon be its home, explaining confidently that: “In consultation with the organisers, we assume that the application for a license will be submitted in April and that the first instalment of €70,000 will follow”. However, negotiations in Hawaii continue. Unfortunately, the planned site, Mount Mauna Kea, is a sacred place to local indigenous people and opposition to the telescope’s installation is growing in ferocity. “The protests are even stronger than at the beginning of the discussion and have even reached some North American universities. This is very unpleasant for the organisers,” explains La Palma’s mayor. “We have done our homework in the last few weeks and prepared everything for licensing. We have also made some modifications to formal and technical content that were requested by the central government. This super telescope would mean new jobs for us, population growth and the attention of astrophysicists at the international level,” he explained. One of the agreements is that for 70 years, scholarships will be given to secondary schools in the area. “The preparatory phase is coming to an end to finally clarify the future of the telescope. If the problems in Hawaii go on, as is to be expected at the moment, the chances on our side of the Atlantic of winning the contract will increase. We expect to have the start of the licensing process on the table in April, and the project will be welcomed with open arms here, by citizens and the authorities alike,” Rodríguez stressed.

The University was founded in 1895, attached to the University of London, and is now one of the most prestigious faculties in economics and social

sciences in the world. The vast majority of the students do not come from Great Britain, which underlines the international n character of the LSE.

Corruption is not a trivial offence

Jail for ex-Santa Cruz Mayor Last week, the Supreme Court confirmed the sentence ordered by the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Provincial Court against the former Mayor of Santa Cruz Miguel Zerolo. He must serve seven years behind bars for corruption. No further appeal can be lodged against the verdict, and Zerolo entered Tenerife II prison on April 1. The judge considered it proven that a property, which was sold to the Santa Cruz City Council for tourism projects in the area surrounding the Playa de Las Teresitas in 2001 at a price of €52.5 million, was sold at a price far above the estimated value, to the detriment of the Santa Cruz City Council. The ex-mayor's comrades who were also sentenced for corruption are Juan Víctor Reyes, exsecretary of the City Planning Department (four years and six months), and José Tomás Martín González, former manager of the City Planning Department (four years). The two entrepreneurs and sellers of the Las Teresitas beach development, Ignacio González Martín and

Entrepreneurs and politicians wanted to ‘rehabilitate’ themselves at the expense of the Santa Cruz City Council, using the land directly behind Playa de Las Teresitas

Antonio Ramón Plasencia, each received five years and three months for embezzlement of public funds. The judge ruled that they had acted in full awareness of the detriment that would be caused to the City Council which even had to increase its budget to accommodate this

transaction. In addition to the prison sentences, those convicted may not hold public office for a period of between seven and 17 years, depending on the sentence. The six are also required to pay the Santa Cruz City Council a fine of over €61.7 million. Eight years have now passed from

the first trial to the final verdict, but justice has finally been done. For all those who hold public office, one thing is at least certain now: cronyism and corruption, as in the past, are no longer possible today. At the very least, those who are discovered must reckon with the hard hand of justice. n

Tándem wants to emphasise the natural form of the human body

In times when we see magazine covers full of supposedly impeccable beauty, which have actually only been processed with Photoshop, and others which have been posted on Instagram, Facebook and other social networks, the exhibition with over 450 photos by artist José Tándem brings a refreshingly shameless look at the human body. The photographer, who was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1967, breaks taboos, shows the human body with all its weaknesses and the scars left behind by life. Overweight or anorexic, with cellulite, tattoos, scars following breast surgery, breastfeeding mothers or even a transgender born in the wrong body. It shows young and old bodies of people aged from 18 to 72 years. Tándem animates the viewer to find a body in this exhibition that resembles their own. "This exhibition is the

and on advertising campaigns. Everyone knows that the flawless bodies shown there do

and computer programs. And although we all know that they are transformed with technol-

ogy, we always take these bodies, which are unreachable, as our role models. Young people, in particular, orient themselves on this and not reaching the ideal of beauty can lead to great frustration" explained the photographer, who now wanted to depict the human body from a different angle, with all the signs of the times that are quite normal and simply belong to it. "In the end, we are all the same and have our quirks. If you recognise this, then my work over the last two years and of the many people who stood in front of my lens has really paid off" says the artist, who wants to encourage people to see beauty even in imperfect bodies. The exhibition can be seen until April 19 at the La Recova art centre in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It’s open from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 11am to 1pm and 6pm to 9pm, and Sundays n from 11am to 2pm.

CITES violation

Animal fragments found at a finca

Thanks to a tip from a private individual, officers of the Guardia Civil Seprona Environmental Protection Unit began investigating a 65-year-old man from San Miguel de Abona. On his finca at Aldea Blanca, several animal fragments were seized which are particularly protected as endangered species by the international Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Since the owner could not prove that he had obtained these specimens legally, a complaint was filed against him. The officers seized the prepared body and the shell of a hawksbill turtle, as well as a green sea turtle, various large corals, numerous crustacean shells, several shark skeletons and a seahorse, in fact a complete showcase filled with ‘marine prey’. In addition, several pieces of wood from Africa and South America were confiscated. Guía de Isora

A renewed Easter display

Guía de Isora’s Easter floral tributes are innovative and interesting

Between April 18 and 21, no less than twenty-one floral art installations will once again represent the Passion of Christ in the streets of Guía de Isora's town centre. The event, considered unique in Spain, has been running for 11 years and continues to gain in popularity. Carlos Curbelo, master florist and director of the ‘Pas-

cua Florida’ celebrations, expressed his happiness with the event’s development since its inception, and was pleased to announce further additions to the programme. These include a prelude to the activities on April 13 with the ‘Amor Omnia Vincit’ experience, a fusion of arts that Curbelo directs together with the also master florist Jordi

For Lorena Medina, Councillor for Culture, the yearly event is "one of the great cultural offerings of the municipality, together with MiradasDoc". Medina explains that "this year we have the added complication of the pedestrianisation works in the urban area, but municipal technicians are working at full speed so that people who come, and there are more every year, enjoy the cultural event to the maximum.” Carlos Curbelo continued by saying that Pascua Florida is "completely integrated into the processional route of Holy Week and is nourished by it, but it’s also true that it’s become an alternative for many people who approach this religious celebration from another point of view. It is a different way of knowing and undern standing the Passion".

New advertising platform

Wonderful Tenerife experiences

The Tenerife Island Council recently launched a new promotional space through its website www.webtenerife.com, specifically targeted at wine and ecotourism offers. These activities are aimed specifically at people who want to fill their holidays with special experiences and encounters. For example, a guided tour with cheese tastings in Teno Alto, a climbing tour in the Barranco de Los Arcos, a trip to do some stargazing, a visit to a banana plantation or a workshop on mojo or gofio production. The Turismo de Tenerife website receives around four and a half million visitors every year, who can now be redirected to this new page with just one click. Alternatively, those interested can also go directly to experience.webtenerife.com. The site is available in Spanish, English, German, Russian, French and Italian. On request, the various activities can also be booked directly. The aim is to give even smaller, unusual n holiday ideas a space in order to be more visible.

‘Pimps’ arrested

Photo: Policía Nacional

The National Police have arrested three people in Lanzarote who apparently sexually exploited young women from their native country, Nigeria. The trio also included a woman who apparently captured her own daughter from Nigeria to make use of her on the holiday island. The ring was discovered after one of the victims filed a complaint. She came to the island as a minor and claims she was forced into prostitution to work off her supposed debt for travel and smuggling costs of €20,000. The women from Nigeria all came from poor backgrounds and were of course promised a better life in Europe. As soon as they arrived, they denounced that their passports were withheld and they had to ‘buy’ them back. Two women were freed in the course of the arrests. One told police she had to try to enter Spain with a passport issued in Greece in the name of a third person, but the forgery was discovered at Madrid-Barajas airport and she was returned to Nigeria. The woman was apparently taken to Libya overland and put into a rubber dinghy, where the passengers were picked up by the Italian authorities and taken to a refugee camp. From there, it seems the pimps based in Lanzarote contacted her again and brought her to Lanzarote by air, once again with forged documents. Once she arrived, she claims she was sexually exploited. As part of the investigation, two apartments were searched and numerous false identity documents and other pieces of evidence were seized. Officers also found an accounts book listing the bookings and income made by This Nigerian woman allegedly the young women. n prostituted her own daughter

Tenerife - camper paradise? ing people are expected at the weekend. We are campers ourselves and can't understand how waste water can be discharged directly onto the road, and waste-holding tanks can simply be emptied onto the verges. This has been achieved because of the great freedom they have! For the tourism federation, or whoever is responsible for the construction of campsites, these are the signs of the times. We have needed proper camp sites for over 15 years. In Los Cristianos, from the Calle Playa Graciosa to the sea, similar conditions prevail. It is even worse on the way from Los Silos to the Teno lighthouse, where

The association Yescape - the largest platform for the rental of residential and camping vehicles, was mentioned recently in Island Connections. Obviously, however, they have not discussed the circum-

stances on site. My report concerns places in Tenerife, for example in Palm Mar: in two small streets with a total of 28 parking spaces which can be used for residents and promenade visitors, 17 camp-

there were about 80 campers last weekend, who partly disposed of their garbage in the cactus hedges and then made their way back home with leaking sewage. There is simply a lack of regulations, such as a weekly certificate of disposal for emptying the holding tanks (we only know one filling station that has a disposal station) and tightened controls with severe penalties for leaving garbage behind. Tourists and local walkers feel disgusted. To underline this letter to the editor, I attach two pictures that illustrate what is described. Many greetings, Marianne H. Tuareg rock from Nigeria

Three strong women from Nigeria with powerful music

These women have broken through all the boundaries to which women in their homeland, Nigeria, are normally subject. They grew up in a nomadic community in the middle of the Sahara desert, without electricity and running water and material possessions, in the bosom of a people firmly bound in ancient traditions, where women have few rights and are still circumcised. It’s a wild and exhausting life. Fatou Seide Ghali, one of the few guitarists in this African country, hid there in the midst of it all and taught herself to play her brother’s guitar. Today she is on the road with her successful trio Filles de Illighadad. Their music is a kind of Tuareg-Rock, a mixture of traditional elements, Rural-Folk, Avant-Rock and After-Folk, a blend which is strong, expressive and crosses over boundaries. They redefine the role of women in their society, cross borders and convey the beauty of their country, and they do it in their own powerful way, which does not hide behind men, but redefines the image of women of their generation and their homeland. The concert will take place on April 6 at 9pm at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna. Tickets are available for €10 and €15 at the box office or via www.entrees.es. n

Improved coordination and screening

Unaccompanied young immigrants

Francisco Candil, the Canary Island Government Deputy Minister for Social Affairs, Carmen Morales, the Canary Island Commissioner for the Protection of Minors, as well as representatives of the Gran Canaria and Tenerife Island Councils, the Juvenile and Foreigners’ Prosecutor’s Office, and the Policía Canaria recently discussed measures to improve the protocols for the care of young immigrants in an inter-institutional working meeting. Minors, as soon as they enter Spanish territory, are subject to the law regarding the protection of minors and thus automatically have the right to stay and are cared for in special accommodation among their peers. At present, around 300 young immigrants who arrived to the archipelago without their families are being cared for in the Canary Islands. Youngsters in this age group have the best chance of not being deported, so immigrants are happy to state that they are under 18 years of age, apparently, around 30 per cent of the claims are untrue. Therefore, all cases are assessed to try to determine how old the refugees actually are. In case of doubt, a medical examination will provide a final assessment. Until clarification is received, questionable persons whose age is estimated to be higher are accommodated separately as it’s deemed preferable that adolescents and adults do not live together. The young immigrants receive language and school lessons or are prepared for a working life. At the age of 18 years they have to leave the receiving centres. In most cases, they then gradually move into a kind of assisted living until the young adults are able to stand on their own two feet. n

Mother sentenced to four months in prison

Attack on teachers for poor grades The court at Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura has sentenced the mother of a student to four months imprisonment and a fine of €4 a day for 20 days. The incident in question took place on March 25 when the interim school reports were being collected. A mother who did not agree with the evaluations of her child became very aggressive towards the teacher. Her partner encouraged her not to sign the school report. The situation heated up so much that the mother attacked the teacher physically. She inflicted scratches on her arms and bruises on her neck. After the woman's partner also tried to join the attack, another father intervened and separated the opponents. The Teachers' Association ANPE Canarias welcomed the verdict. They provide psychological and legal advice to their teachers, something that unfortunately is increas-

ingly necessary. In the school year 2017/18 the teachers' defence system was activated 147 times. There were a total of 75 aggressive attacks in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 72 in the province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Twelve of the cases took place in kindergarten, 49 in primary school, 73 in upper

secondary school, 11 during vocational training courses and the rest in other forms of training. The teachers' association supported the recent ruling as an important signal. It has long demanded that the teacher be regarded with an authority equal to that of police officers and doctors in order to guar-

antee their integrity. More and more often parents aggressively express their displeasure at their children's poor performance and actively attack the teachers instead of questioning their own children. From the teachers' point of view, the ruling makes it clear that parents must respect teachers. n

Falling visitors numbers – opinion

Photo: Ashotel

The end of the story depends on us However, what nobody really expected and that has caught us wrong-footed, was the collapse of the Nordic market. It was a surprise to us. And not only us, but also to the tour operators, who are looking at each other and wondering if anyone knows what’s happening, because one thing is clear: something is happening, especially in Sweden. The managing directors of the major tour operators mention some possible motives: warmer temperatures this winter, the devaluation of the Swedish and Norwegian krona/krone with the associated reduction in purchasing power and concern about the environmental impact of one's holiday. We must be careful, this last point may sound banal, but we should take it very seriously. The other points are self-regulating

- bad weather or a better economy. But if the environmental idea is strengthening in people's minds, we must be prepared and have answers. We have to be careful and as hoteliers we have to be aware that our environmental footprint should be minimal. That is why our authorities should also support initiatives in this direction. Ashotel strongly supports the installation of a photovoltaic plant that will allow us to become more competitive. Not only in terms of energy savings, but also in terms of being able to claim that we are the first holiday destination whose hotels cover their energy needs thanks to our wonderful sun. This should be seen as a national strategy and we should not waste time. But back to the tornado. It’s true that the situation has deterio-

rated, but it’s no less true that we still have very good figures - results that we would have thought spectacular five years ago. How quickly we got used to the good times! And what nobody can deny, not even the tour operators, is that despite the fact that we all know that the situation is stabilising, Turkey is strengthening, flight connections are falling and the European economy is suffering ... the truth is that the hotel infrastructure on the islands is much better prepared than during other crises. We have made a great effort to renovate our hotels, to differentiate ourselves, to improve our hotel offer and also the complementary offer. All this allows us to be optimistic and to confirm that at the end of the film this ship won't sink, but will write another success story with us n as protagonists.

Thief caught at the port By Jorge Marichal President of Ashotel (Tenerife province Hotel and Holiday Association) Almost all of us were aware that tourism in the Canary Islands would not always boom and we have already seen that the situation is beginning to normalise.

What we didn't expect were the current circumstances, which are tantamount to a positive tornado of problems. We knew that Brexit, or rather one-doesn’t-know-when-Brexit, would significantly affect the British travel market for Tenerife and Lanzarote. We could have guessed that the great demand for Turkey, which is

currently reviving in Germany, will be reflected in the Canarian sales figures and the loss of the airline Germania has not exactly helped. Islands such as Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria are currently experiencing a significant drop in bookings, with double-digit declines for the coming summer and winter seasons.

Expensive hug A 26-year-old Romanian man was recently arrested at the Santa Cruz port after he arrived on a ferry from Gran Canaria. Two animal carcasses washed up in one week

Stinking animal freighters Twice in the course of one week, employees of the communities and the environmental protection office in Granadilla de Abona were called out to salvage dead cattle that had been washed ashore by the Atlantic. The first find, a dead bull, was discovered by bathers at Playa de La Jaquita in El Médano. Only two days later, a dead cow was washed ashore in the industrial area on the coast of Granadilla de Abona. Last year, the two internationally renowned windsurfers Daida and Iballa Ruano from Gran Canaria discovered a cow floating in the water while training in Pozo Izquierdo and distributed the photo via their social networks. It’s thought probable that the animals came from so-called live cattle transport on freighter ships. They come from South America and pass the Canary Islands. Most live cattle deliveries are to Turkey and the Arab world, but if an animal dies during the laborious crossing, it’s simply thrown overboard. The

Works by later composers such as Viktor Ullmann and Ernst Krenek will also be given an opportunity by the opera season's Artistic Director Alejandro Abrante, to be heard and become more widely known.

"The response to our opera performances so far has been great, even in the current season which is not yet over. The fact that the three performances of Turandot were fully sold out in mid-March and that the audience congratulated the artists with standing ovations shows how successful the operas are" explained Island President Carlos Alonso at the presentation of the programme, where Island Councillor for Culture José Luis Rivero was also present. for the coming season, he has announced that the age limit for the special rates for subscriptions or for individual performances for young people will be raised to 30 years. "The fundamental pillars of the opera programme are the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and the Tenerife Auditorium. This project is at the forefront of the operatic world and can be compared to large international stages" says Alonso. Another very important part of the opera programme is the training of young singers through Opera(e)Studio. "This is where great artists are trained, some of whom are now in international demand and often return to our stage. Of the 70 singing talents who have been trained with us, 40 are already professionally successful. We are a role model in this respect" explains Abrante. The opera season begins on October 24 with L'elisir d'amore by Gaetano Donizetti. It’s a co-production with the Teatro Comunale di Bolognia, the Tbilisi Opera and the Ballet State Theatre. Four performances are planned. From November 19 to 23, Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto will be on the programme with the star guest artist being the Italian baritone Leo Nucci. The first trimester of the coming season will end with two operas composed by two artists from the 20th century. The theme of total power will be sarcastically staged, on the one hand with the opera

Der Diktator by Ernst Krenek, which he wrote in 1928 in fascist Italy, and on the other with Der Kaiser von Atlantis, composed in 1943 by Viktor Ullmann and based in a concentration camp. In March 2020, Lucrecia Borgia, another Donizetti opera, directed by Silvia Paoli, is on the programme. She already inspired the Tinerfeñan audience in 2014, 2015 and 2017. On April 25 and 26, Rinaldo by Georg Friedrich Händel will be staged as an opera for the whole family that is suitable for children. La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi is planned as a kind of 'mobile pocket opera' that will be performed in several boroughs. The opera La Tabernera del Puerto by Pablo Sorozábal will conclude the season on June 20. There will

The La Gomera Island Council has ordered more than 7,500 specimens of plants typical to the region to be planted on both private and public land in order to prevent soil erosion, especially in the south of the island, and the spread of invasive species. It will also promote the targeted distribution of native plants and the densification of the thermophile (supporting relatively high temperatures) forest which is rich in Canarian and Macaronesian endemic plants. These include sandalwood, wild olive, Phoenician juniper and white rubber trees. The freshly planted forest is intended to help retain water in the soil and mitigate the consequences of climate change. Over 200 pupils from various schools on the island took part in the planting campaign, which is n open for public participation.

The guardian's task is to ensure the welfare of the person being looked after, their rights and the protection of their assets. The typical profile among the 1,791 residents is as follows: about 63 per cent are women, almost half of whom are Level III care patients in terms of dependence. Around 62 per cent of the over-65s have cognitive disorders and 56 per cent need special care due to mental n or sensory impairment.

No family support for senior citizens A recent study undertaken by the non-profit organisation Adepsi, analysed the support network for seniors who live in homes for the elderly in Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, and who have been taken into care by the Government because they can no longer care for themselves and have no family support. The study involved 31 of the 33 homes for the elderly on the two islands. They reached the conclusion that there are increasing numbers of elderly people who are no longer aided by their families. This means that they receive hardly any visitors and suffer from a lack of social contacts, an important aspect for the physical and mental wellbeing of the elderly. Spanish Festival in London

The contract for the London Spanish Festival was recently awarded for the second year running to the company that organises Tenerife markets and other events, Baratillo Los Verdes SL.

Last year’s Spanish Festival was massively successful and will once again be held at one of the top tourist destinations in London and the UK – the Portobello Green area of the

Portobello Road Markets district, which attracts over 13.1 million visitors a year from all over the world. A spokesman for the Tenerife organisation said that, as well as being awarded the prestigious Tenerife award for tourism by CIT Sur, this much sought after contract has been won by what has been suggested as being “possibly the finest market organisation in Europe” The spokesman also expressed thanks to all the traders and tourists that are attracted to their markets year after year, and went on to state that “receiving such a prestigious acknowledgement in our very special field is credited to the traders who

Woman attacked after religious event

Strangled in the street Two 20-year-old men were recently arrested, one in Santa Cruz and the other in Arrecife, Lanzarote, for strangling a woman on the street in Santa Cruz with the intention of stealing her belongings. The victim had met her tormentors shortly before during a religious event and afterwards she wanted to visit a family member. Since the victim does

not live in Tenerife, the two young men offered to accompany her. On the way, while taking a break on a bench, one of the men strangled the victim from behind, while the other kicked and punched her, until they were able to take her valuables and disappear. The victim was initially disoriented by the attack and her lack of local knowledge, until she managed

to get help from a passer-by, who called an ambulance and the police. The two men, who were identified during the course of the investigation, had, as they later admitted, already targeted their victim at the tram stop and followed her to the location of the religious event, where they gained her trust. Both suspects are now n in custody.

attend our events both in Tenerife and the UK.” The Spanish festival in London is solely for Spanish traders and Spanish owned companies and, shortly, over 500 invitations will be sent by organisers inviting them to this year’s gathering in the famous Portobello Road on June 23. It is one of the best attended and most prestigious events for any business, municipality or corporate organisation that wishes to increase their association with English tourists. If any trader in the Canary Islands wishes to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact the company’s Spanish office, BLV S.L., by emailing: n nstenerife@yahoo.com.

Australian birds under threat

Black cockatoos at Loro Parque

Loro Parque has recently added a group of young black cockatoos to its ‘Australian aviaries’. Four of the species are on display in the Park for the first time, and one of them is in danger of extinction, so its presence will contribute to the awareness of visitors about the need to protect wild species and their habitats in the natural environment. Some of the birds that have joined the exhibition have arrived directly from Australia, and others have been born in the Loro Parque Foundation breeding centre, where you can find many of the specimens that make up the largest reserve of species and subspecies of parrots in the world. The facility, which is specially equipped for cockatoos, is a free flight aviary with great visibility to observe the activity of these majestic birds and allows visitors to see the birds flying almost in their natural environment, while enjoying the enrichment of their ambience with logs, eucalyptus and other elements that keep them physically and psychologically active, as well as food from their country of origin. All the Australian cockatoos found in this space, where they practice their flight and get stronger, are young specimens and in the future, they will be able to reproduce. This imitation and creation of their surroundings at Loro Parque reflects the company’s commitment to constant innovation. Thus, this new space allows these birds to develop their muscles and interact with each other, which is a perfect indicator of animal welfare. n

Britain and the Canary Islands Britain shares a rich common history with the Canary Islands, and in particular Lanzarote, as illustrated in a book by author Larry Yaskiel. Called The British Connection To Lanzarote And The Canaries, the book was recently launched in the Larry Yaskiel presents his publication The UK at the pres- British Connection To Lanzarote And The tigious Cervantes Canaries at London’s Cervantes Institute Institute in London. Yaskiel, born in London in 1936, has been resident in Lanzarote since 1979. A renowned producer and music manager for many years, he is currently a journalist and editor for the Lancelot Island Journal and has produced one of the most in-depth looks at the ties between the two regions to date. The book delves into key moments and players from the fourteenth century right through to the twenty-first, including the conquest of the Islands, maritime hostilities between Spain and Britain, commercial relations with wine, fruit, shipping, industry and tourism, and links with influential people such as Winston Churchill, Francis Drake, William Shakespeare, Horatio Nelson, Agatha Christie and The Beatles. Showing fascinating insight into recent and past events, the project has the full support of the Lanzarote Council, with the president of the island, Pedro San Ginés, attending the launch in London. During the event, the author spoke about his research experiences, especially thanking historian Agustín Pallarés, who guided him through the first steps of investigation. n

Geothermal resources

Nemesio Pérez, Antonio Morales and Raúl García Brink (l-r) presented the positive results of the first phase

"If we could find useful geothermal resources on our island, it would be like winning the lottery" said Gran Canaria's Island President Antonio Morales at a recent press conference in the capital. Together with Nemesio Pérez, Director of the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute Involcan, and the Island Energy Councillor Raúl Garcia Brink, he recently presented the results of the first phase of the study. About two years ago, the first steps were taken to gen-

erate electricity from water heated by the earth and examples of this can be found in France, Germany and Iceland. If thermal water at a temperature of around 150 degrees Celsius is found, it could be used in a binary cycle power plant, as the system works from a temperature of 105 degrees. The first phase, in which €535,000 were invested, most of which was financed by the Island Council, and €100,000 by Involcan, consisted of a geophysical, geo-

chemical and geological survey. "This is comparable to a blood test and X-ray examination of a human being" Morales explained. The result is positive and proves that there are usable water resources, especially in the south and south east of the island. In a further step, which will consume another half a million euros and take about one and a half years, three points are now to be determined at which test drillings will then be carried out in a final phase.

Each of these wells is expected to cost six million euros to dig and must therefore be well placed. They will penetrate two and a half kilometres into the earth. What is important for the researchers is the location of the usable water and how easy it would be to extract it. The simpler it is, the more economical the project will be. "The costs of geothermal energy are roughly comparable to those of wind energy. Together with the use of the wind and sun and the Chira-Soria hydroelectric power plant, geothermal energy could be an important step towards supplying us with mainly self-sufficient energy from renewable sources" explained Brink. "Geothermal energy has been treated like a stepchild with ignorance and inactivity in the Canary Islands. The geothermal potential of the island has been known for a long time, but the institutions did not want to know about its use. The situation is different in the Azores, where more than 60,000 people are already supplied with electricity generated from geothermal sources" Pérez remarked ironically. In Gran Canaria, the second phase is now under way in order to identify as precisely as possible the most promising points n for test drilling.

Intergenerational project

One, two, three... tell me again

Within the framework of the project 1, 2, 3. tell me again, the Tenerife Island Council has launched an intergenerational programme to strengthen the links between the younger and older generations, for the benefit of both. The Ansina socio-cultural dynamisation programme is being carried out in cooperation with primary schools and homes for the elderly. It’s intended to stimulate the exchange of experiences and knowledge and the organisation of joint activities, involving two collectives which despite their age differences, have a great deal to say to each other. Such activities are also considered to be a key element to active ageing. In a first meeting of primary school classes from Santa Cruz and La Laguna at a retirement home in their city, stories and poems were read, and together they created a short story and some illustrations, during which above all, they laughed together. The Ansina programme has been in existence for almost 30 years and is based on four cornerstones: a healthy lifestyle, social awareness, participation in social life and learning, and active leisure. In this way, the physical, psychological and social well-being of senior citizens is promoted continuously and in a varied manner. In addition, senior citizens are integrated into society. Ansina looks after more than 200 senior citizens’ centres where they regularly carry out various programmes to revitalise everyday life for the residents. n Photo: Cab. Tfe

Home wanted for a three-legged cat

A quiet forever home is urgently needed for Yasmina, a two-year-old female cat. Until now she has lived wild in a ravine in Puerto de La Cruz, but unfortunately when she was found it was discovered she had an open femur fracture. Whether it was an accident or she was beaten is not known, but subsequently her right hind leg had to be amputated. Currently she is in temporary care at Romántica I. Now Yasmina, who is tame, sweet and calm, is urgently looking for a permanent home. She can be a bit anxious when she first meets new humans, but she soon becomes very relaxed. Due to her handicap she should only be kept indoors or possibly with access to a closed terrace. She needs to be the only cat in a household because in contact with other cats she would become a victim too quickly due to her disability. If you are interested in offering Yasmina a home, please n call 649 844 435.

Dangerous pills sold as food supplements

Drug sales network The National Police, in collaboration with the customs authority have dismantled a criminal network, arresting 18 people and confiscating 400,000 dangerous pills which were being sold as food supplements. They came from China, were offered on websites and sent by post to Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the UK. Particularly dangerous was the fact that two preparations were mixed with Tadalafil and Sildenafil, which are said to help with erectile dysfunction. These additives remained unmentioned on the labels and were therefore a danger for people who present an intolerance reaction to the enzyme phosphodiesterase-5. The investigators started to watch a web page offering illegal medicines, camouflaged as nutritional supplements under different brand names. In collaboration with the Spanish Agency for Consumption, Food Safety and Nutrition (AEOSCAN), after

initial investigation, the suspicion arose that the mastermind of the sales activities was working out of Santa Cruz in Tenerife. They also discovered that the person was using multiple websites as sales channels. After following several leads, the police found out that the neuralgic centre of the gang, with several pseudo-entrepre-

neurs, was in fact located in Tenerife. The group operated from the island and maintained a logistics centre in Elche in the province of Alicante for storage and distribution of orders. As part of the investigation, 19 house searches were carried out and 18 people arrested, of whom 11 were in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, five in

Alicante and one each in Las Palmas and Granada. Officers seized 400,000 pills, €50,000 in cash, 27 mobile phones and 22 laptops. In their report, the police underlined that these were not only illegal products, but "preparations that posed a high health risk to consumers due to undeclared combinations and active ingredients". n

We love Lagarto Brasserie! ing. The tuna, served raw, was seared at the table with very hot charcoal and then topped with frozen ginger sorbet – a perfect marriage of flavours. In fact, my companion described it as an erotic experience! We paired the starters with a fine

By Carlos Verdecia Venture Restaurants have become a staple of culinary excellence in the south of Tenerife and a favourite food destination for tourists and locals alike, so it comes as no surprise that Lagarto Brasserie has made such an immediate splash in the area. Situated in La Caleta with a stunning view of the ocean, you’re welcomed into a large open space with a relaxed atmosphere, live mellow rock music and simple elegance in the decor. Balint, a pleasant and very knowledgeable manager, led the way for us, explaining the menu and layout of the restaurant, which includes a full bar, open kitchen and a well stocked wine cellar with selections from Tenerife, the Spanish Peninsula, France, Germany, Italy and Argentina. A large selection of Champagnes, Cavas and premium beers is also available. “A simple concept with a modern twist,” is how Balint described the restaurant, but bear in mind that this is no ordinary brasserie. In developing Lagarto, close attention was paid to the latest culinary tendencies around the world while remaining faithful to the brasserie tradition. Here, Mediterranean dishes are in perfect harmony with signature meats, Asian delica-

cies and Vegan recipes. Yes, you read correctly. There is a whole section in the menu titled ‘Vegan World’. As far as starters go, among them you can delight yourself with King Prawn and Guacamole on Toast or a Steak Tartare

‘American Style’. We decided to go with the King Crab Cakes, which were crispy on the outside yet tender and perfectly textured on the inside. That was followed by a Tuna Tataki that became the star of the even-

priced. We tried the au gratin spinach, the rustic creamy potatoes and a surprising South American dish called Humitas, which are deep-fried corn buns with ricotta cheese. Chef Francisco Alamo explained that

they try to add a touch of world cuisine to traditional recipes. Alamo, who comes from Chile, also indicated that sourcing quality products is a priority at Lagarto. To finish, we ordered a dessert cornucopia that is described in the menu as ‘The Sharing Trio’. Basically, it’s a half portion of their most popular offerings: Blueberry Cheesecake, Coconut Pineapple Mousse and Tiramisu. A sweet and perfect way to end the evening. Chef Alamo and his team are reimagining the brasserie concept by adding creative new ideas that bring prime comfort food to a whole new level. So if you are in the mood for

a casual culinary experience that will shake your senses, visit Lagarto Brasserie. You will not be disappointed. n

ADOPT, DON’T BUY

Animal charities’ round up ing the animals’ care and are essential to ensuring our K9 dogs and cats have everything they need to make their time at the refuge as comfortable as possible. Adoptions We have many beautiful dogs waiting for their forever homes. You can see them on our website at www.k9tenerife.com. Or visit the Refuge on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas, any day between 10am and 2pm. Alternatively, call us on 667 638 468 or email info@k9tenerife.com. You will also find stories of our dogs’ antics on our Facebook page at Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker or K9 Tenerife. Also, to see daily photos of the walks that take place at K9, ‘like’ the facebook page Voluntarios del Refugio K9. The lovely Esperanza is waiting at K9 for a new home

K9 Meet the lovely Esperanza, pictured here. She was brought to K9 a few months ago by one of our volunteers. He’d spotted her wandering the streets and spent five days trying to rescue her, finally managing to bring her to us. She was extremely shy, scared and thin, and we named her Esperanza (Hope). While she’s still very nervous and shy with new people, she’s begun to show her personality and is a really sweet and gentle girl. When the volunteers arrive in the mornings, she jumps out of bed to say hello and you can tell she’s happy to see us. Otherwise, Esperanza the Podenco is often curled up in her bed as the noise of the dogs and all the new people can be a bit overwhelming for her. She would love the chance to be taken to her forever home, and once she knows and feels comfortable around you, she will begin to show you affection and her wonderful tender nature. Please come and meet her. With patience and taking the time to get to know her, you’ll not be disappointed.

Ways you can help We always appreciate any help. You could buy our merchandise at the refuge, you can sponsor one of our wonderful sponsor dogs via our website, you can donate money either via our website or in cash at the refuge, or food and other items which help us look after our dogs and cats. Also, you can become a volunteer dog walker by calling us or simply popping by any day during our opening hours. Remember to keep an eye on our website or Facebook page (information below) for any fundraising events which you may like to attend. Also, why not come along to our charity shop in Alcalá? Shop till you drop Please note we are no longer holding car boot sales in Los Gigantes, but you can visit our shop in Alcalá Plaza Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm. Donations of quality household goods, clothes, books, shoes or other items are very welcome as well. Call 646 561 035 to arrange collection of larger items from all local areas. All proceeds go towards fund-

Cats Welfare See some of our kittens at Don Perro Vets, Las Chafiras (tel: 922 735 824), and Yaiza Vet, Los Cristianos (922 169 381). As well as kittens, we have several adult cats from 18 months to seven years old. All adults are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. All cats go on a week’s trial in your home so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. If you adopt two kittens together then initial injections, microchip and neutering is free for the second one. Adopt a black kitten or two and both will receive the above treatments free. Contact us at www.cats-welfaretenerife.com or ring/whatsapp Sharon on 662 524 006 or Sandra on 671 282 773 (for English, Spanish and German, after 6pm). Alternatively, message us on Facebook or visit our shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino), open seven days a week, 10am until 6pm.

idents of Los Geranios apartments in Los Cristianos who’ve made a fantastic donation of dog food to the refuge. You are all very special and have big hearts for helping the dogs. On that note we would like to thank each and every person that helps the dogs at the refuge. You are all fantastic. We’d like to remind you that a single bite from an infected mosquito can give your dog heartworm, which can lead to a very slow and painful death. We can never stress enough the importance of treating your dog to prevent this occurrence. Over 60 per cent of dogs that arrive at the refuge test positive for heartworm. It’s a very costly treatment and uncomfortable for the dog but one of utmost importance to prevent further pain and suffering. We have over 230 gorgeous dogs of all shapes and sizes looking for loving homes. We don’t charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a clean bill of health

ADOPTION SUCCESS

Lucky in love There are many hundreds of dogs and cats on the island looking for new homes, with each of the refuges working to their limit to ensure that abandoned animals have as good a life as possible. That’s why it’s always good to hear a heart-warming story of success, such as the tale of this gorgeous chap pictured here, called Chico. He’s been living at Acción del Sol for a whole 10 years, after being picked up from the streets of Granadilla at just two years old. He’s a lovely natured dog, but for whatever reason nobody wanted to take him home – until recently, when an older couple spotted him on the AktionTier website and fell instantly in love with him. We are all really happy that finally he will have the life he so deserves. Contact the Acción del Sol refuge on 664 321 219 between the hours of 8am and 5pm if you would like to meet any of their dogs, or see the other refuges on this page for further future furry friends. n

How you can help Besides obvious needs such as food, water and veterinary care, a little attention is all the dogs here want. They love going out for a walk so please do come and take one out if you have time, they really will appreciate it. We are also desperately looking for people travelling to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Berlin or Frankfurt who would be prepared to escort a dog. All that’s needed is a little time at the airport: all necessary paperwork and handling of the dogs is done by AccionTier staff. Please do call us on 664 321 219 or 602463242 between the hours of 8am and 5pm if you can help in any way, or visit us on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 2pm to 5pm, and Saturdays 1pm to 4pm. We’re situated directly under the wind turbines, from exit 52 on the TF1 north bound, just after the El Médano junction. Head for the windmills on the coast and we’re located in the buildings on the right hand side. Sport for special people

A swim around the island Wheelchair-bound Carmelo Santana Sánchez is fully in his element in the water

To circle Gran Canaria once in the Atlantic means to cover about 190 kilometres. The physically challenged sportsman Carmelo Santana Sánchez has set himself this task for next October. Together with the sports club Sin Barreras Sport Driving and Telde Councillor for

Sport Diego Ojeda, the second stage was recently decided at Playa Melenara. "This is a great project, especially as it involves an athlete from this collective who wants to meet this challenge. Of course we support that. Carmelo is an excellent swimmer with a lot of experience, especially when

it comes to competitions in the open sea" explained Ojeda. To reach his goal of swimming once around the island, Carmelo has divided the course into eleven stages. The starting signal will be given at Playa de las Alcaravaneras in Las Palmas. From there he will swim to Playa de Melenara, then further to Bahia Arinaga, Bahía Feliz, Playa El Pajar, Playa Mogán and then even further on the west coast to La Aldea, Agaete, Sardina del Norte near Gáldar, El Puertillo, Playa de las Canteras and finally back

to the starting point. Eleven days of swimming that will be exhausting. Ojeda also praised the Sin Barreras Sport Driving club. "It is committed to making challenged athletes more visible and perceived. Sport with people from this group therefore becomes ever more normal in the eyes of the public. Because the sport excludes no-one, it’s all the same whether there is a motor or a psychological handicap. This club honours these values with respect and solidarn ity" said Ojeda.

CD Tenerife

Magical night in the Heliodoro as Tenerife beat leaders By Chris Todd The Blanquiazules have hit good form just at the right time, an epic, thrilling 3:2 victory over league leaders Osasuna was followed by a deserved draw at high flying Albacete. The gap now between CD Tenerife and the drop zone stands at seven points but with ten games still to play in the Spanish Second Division they cannot rest on their laurels in the slightest. This April 5, Tenerife face another stiff test at home to Sporting Gijón who themselves need to win to gain ground on the play-off zone, so it should make for a fierce contest. The recent improvement in results has taken pressure off manager Jose Luis Oltra but in the summer the club will need to decide whether he is the man to take us into next season or not. In his favour he is a very popular manager with the players and fans alike. He took over the role in September so the team is not exactly to his blueprint and for next season he will have an increased budget to work with mainly due to the sale of Jorge Saenz to Valencia. Against his name has been the inability to win any away games (Tenerife is the only team in the professional leagues not to have won away) and if we cannot stop that cycle next season we will not achieve anything. However, there is still plenty to play for this season and

with a certain Canarian derby on the horizon (the weekend of May 4/5) nothing is certain. The day and time of the derby should be known soon but rumours point to a May 4 match with a 6pm kick off. The club recently announced ticket prices for the derby against UD Las Palmas and they are on balance very fair. Season ticket holders gain free entrance on the day which was welcomed as it was thought that an extra charge for the ‘Day of the Club’ would be added. Prices for the General Public have been increased from €13 to €30 in the Popular end, but there are special offers. For instance there is a mini-season card that allows entrance for the remaining five home games starting at €65 (so €15 a game including the derby) or existing season ticket holders can buy up to four tickets at reduced rates. Whatever happens, it’s likely to be a sell out and even though both teams will probably not have anything to play for at either end of the table, a passionate affair is always guaranteed. 22/03/2019 CD Tenerife 3:2 Osasuna What a match! What a comeback! It was one of those nights that you can look back on and say “I was there”. Osasuna were flying, top of the table, seven points clear in the direct promotion zone, highest scorers and on a run of four straight wins.

Isma López in only his third game at the club scored two goals, his first after 78 minutes and the winning goal on 83 minutes to bring the house down. With the score now at 3:2 Osasuna tried to equalise in the final minutes but the Tenerife defence held firm to record an important and thrilling win. 30/03/2019 Albacete 2:2 CD Tenerife Albacete are rightly named the ‘revelation’ team of the season in the second division. For a relatively small club they’re punching above their weight sitting proudly in third position and a play-off place is certainly possible. However they will be kicking themselves for dropping two points against Tenerife who once again left it very, very late to equalise. The blanquiazules took the lead after only six minutes

when captain Suso smashed a shot under the Albacete keeper. The home team, unbeaten this season in the Carlos Belmonte Stadium, fought back and equalised through a looping header on 27 minutes. The second half started badly for the blanquiazules as they conceded again but there was not much Dani in goal could do to stop the thunderbolt from Bela. At 2:1 the game dragged on but Tenerife sensed that they had another goal in them, they had done it so many times before this season. Malbasic hit the bar and Racic blasted over, it looked as if it wasn’t going to be our day. But on 90 minutes Serbian Malbasic latched on to a long through ball and coolly finished to make the score 2:2. It was a deserved point for Tenerife and an important morale n boosting performance.

The Tenerife players were euphoric after their epic win

The first half had a good vibrant pace. Tenerife were playing some decent football and creating the odd chance but Osasuna were a different class on the attack. A fine move by the visitors ended with Ibañez scoring from close range on 26 minutes and two minutes later their lead was doubled through Brandon. The half time score was logical in a way but did not really reflect the play, which was fairly even. Osasuna incredibly had never won a league game on the island and it appeared that

the voodoo was going to be broken. However, little did we know what lay ahead. Just after the hour mark Tenerife pulled a goal back to make the score 1:2 and the whole mood of the game changed. The closing stages of the game belonged to Tenerife, they knew that manager Oltra’s position depended on it. When out of favour striker José Naranjo came off the bench on the hour mark most fans did not get too excited but he was in inspired determined form. But the goals came from an unlikely source! Happy herb gardening!

Many herbs are happy in pots

Tips

Sow annual or biennial herbs such as parsley and coriander at intervals of three to four weeks to ensure a continuous supply of fresh leaves. Don’t fertilize herb plants too much or they will produce lots of lush growth, but with little flavour. Pinch off tips every now and again to inspire the plant to grow bushier and to stop annual herbs, such as basil, from blooming; energy spent on seed production means less for leaf growth. Dead-head others as the flowers start to fade. Pick herbs in the morning when the fragrant and flavourful oils are at their best and harvest the full plant just before they bloom, as it is then that they are at their most delicious. n

Generally speaking, herbs prefer a sunny, sheltered location with neutral to alkaline soil and good drainage, though there are a few which thrive in shady conditions and moist soil, such as chervil, parsley, meadowsweet, mint, lemon balm and chives. As with everything, it’s a case of checking out a plant’s requirements and doing your best to replicate them. Your reward for a little simple care of your herbs will be an almost constant supply of delicious leaves that can be nipped off as and when you need them, and perennials such as thyme, sage and rosemary can be harvested all year round.

Out in the garden For your very own herb patch the first thing you need to do is prepare the ground. Your aim is to create a sandy, welldrained soil of moderate fertility. If you have heavy clay you can easily create a free-draining and fertile bed by digging a hole 35 to 45 centimetres deep and placing a five to ten centimetre layer of crushed stone or coarse sand on the bottom. Before returning the soil, dig through some organic

matter such as manure, compost and green waste, as well as a little coarse grit and/or sand. When you refill the beds lay the mix a bit higher than the original level to allow for settling. If the soil is very acid, simply add a little lime.

Plan it out If you take the time to make a plan, you will get to know your herbs better before you start and can have lots of fun positioning your plants. First of all make a list of herbs that you're most likely to use and include a description of their height and spread, foliage and/or flower colour, as well as their spacing, soil, light and water requirements. Then make a sketch of the shape of the bed, preferably to scale (for example, 2cm on the sketch equals 1m on the ground). When deciding how to arrange your herbs, one of the first things you need to know is whether they are annual or biennial, such as basil, coriander, parsley, dill and chervil which grow quickly, or perennial like oregano, mint, thyme, sage, rosemary and chives, which are slower growing

Cooking with your own fresh herbs is a great feeling

Herbs can make a wonderful addition to any garden, patio, rockery or balcony. They are quite easy to maintain and will grow happily in most areas, and several, such as rosemary, sage, thyme and lavender are even useful for coastal gardens.

They even make wonderful tea!

and require a more permanent abode. The two different types will probably have to be kept separate, as areas that hold annuals will need to be reworked more often. Plants also need to be arranged according to height. Ideally, island beds (that can be accessed from all sides) shouldn’t be any wider than 1.5m. The tallest herbs go in the centre, progressing to shorter ones around the outside. A border bed (reachable only from the front) shouldn’t be much wider than 75cms. Place the tallest plants at the

back of the border and the lower ones in front of them. Care should be taken in planting coriander and continental parsley close together as both seed copiously and can become mixed up as they have similar leaves. Plants can also be arranged to their best aesthetic advantage. For instance the silver-grey foliage of lavender or sage provides a wonderful background for bright flowers; herbs with colourful leaves can make any bed even more interesting; and low-growing plants such as chives and thyme can make a great path edge.

You could also arrange the plants to form a distinctive pattern or to highlight a special feature such as a fountain, garden seat or birdbath. Also, bear in mind that herbs like mint spread very quickly and will need to be contained. Simply plant them in the ground in bottomless pots with the top of the pot level with, or just above, the soil surface.

Indoors and containers The majority of herbs will also be quite happy in a nice pot or container. Relatively deep ones are best, especially for larger plants such as rosemary, and make sure that the container has effective drainage. Thyme, lavender, and rosemary will all thrive in a pot in the garden or on a balcony, whilst chives, parsley, basil, coriander, marjoram, dill and mint will even grow well in a sunny spot indoors. Cheap, useful and the perfect plants to start out with – why n not give herbs a go?
