Join in the Arona Carnival Zebras, giraffes, lions, snakes, elephants, natives and anything else that can be associated with the jungle will be brought to life during the Carnival in Los Cristianos. The Jungle is the theme of the 2019 Arona International Carnival, which takes place from March 21 to April 1. Long after the official Ash Wednesday, the party people of the island will once again plunge into a colourful hustle and bustle together with the holidaymakers. Last year more than 125,000 people were drawn to the south for Arona’s Carnival, setting a new record, and a similarly active participation is expected this year. The streets will become a jungle filled with rhythm, colourful splendour, imaginative costumes and above all lots of good humour. It’s best to simply leave everyday life behind and instead conjure up a creative costume and let yourself be carried away by the cheerful activities on the street. The heart of Los Cristianos will throb to the samba beat with most events taking place outdoors in the Carnival pre-
cinct, opposite the Valdés Center. The first highlight will take place on March 23, when the Carnival by Day begins at 12pm with a Wig Festival and musical accompaniment by the radio station Europa
FM. The opening procession takes place at 7pm starting from the CC Gala shopping centre in Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina in Playa de Las Américas and heading towards the Oasis shopping centre in Avenida
Las Américas. Drum and samba sounds, plus colourful dancing groups, are bound to infect the crowds with their party mood. Continued on page two

The election of the Senior Queen of the Arona Carnival takes place on March 25 and on the following day, the Infant Queen will be selected. Both galas are well worth watching. The main gala for the election of the Carnival Queen 2019 will take place on March 28 at 9pm, where both the ladies’ fantastic costumes and the candidates’ charisma will be judged. The creations are always an explosion of the imagination of the designers
who created them. The final Queen to be chosen will be elected on March 29, when it will be time to select the most fab Drag Queen. This contest will reveal unbelievable transformation talents and amazement and enthusiasm are guaranteed. The crowning finale is dancing until dawn to live music by the orchestra Wamampy, or to the music offered by top local DJs. On March 29 from 12pm, the Carnival by Day will pro-
vide great entertainment for the whole family and national and international artists will perform on the ‘Los 40’ stage. The best Carnival hits will be honoured with a musical beach tour at 8pm and from 10pm the orchestra Deliciosa and The Regueton Band will warm up the evening. Those who manage to be awake again by morning can visit the exhibition of classic and antique cars from 11am, or the pet Carnival competi-
tion at 12pm. But even if you are a late starter, you should be in Los Cristianos from 4pm at the latest if you don’t want to miss the grand Carnival Parade - Coso Apoteósis which runs from the Paloma Beach complex via the Avenida Juan Carlos I to the Los Cristianos cultural centre. Carnival groups from all parts of the island will come together to enjoy the party atmosphere once again. The parade culminates in a mega
dance party with live music. On April 1, Carnival will end symbolically with the burial of the sardine. Weeping and wailing widows and widowers will be dressed in black to mourn the end of the Carnival, when the figure of the sardine will be taken in procession to be burned on the Los Cristianos beach. This closes Carnival 2019, but in September the samba groups will return to the streets to announce the n 2020 Carnival.

Warning to parents
Momo Challenge on children‘s mobiles The Canary Island Government has issued an urgent warning to parents whose children have a mobile phone. Several times while children have been connecting to harmless videos like Peppa Pig and the popular game Fortnite, apparently a game called Momo Challenge has appeared which is highly dangerous. First, the children receive a Whatsapp message which they are forced to open. There the mother ‘Momo’ presents herself, and she forces them to undertake certain tasks. Children who do not react at first are insulted and put under pressure. The tasks they have to accomplish include, for example, watching shocking pictures and videos. In the end, however, Momo demands that the child commits suicide. If the children do not want to participate, they are terrorised. Who knows how much of the world of reality and fantasy are connected in the child’s psyche, but it is clear how much the child can be damaged and manipulated. This ‘game’ began in the USA and has spread virally from there in the social networks. The author is not yet known. The CEIP Barranco de Las Torres primary school in Adeje recently warned the parents of their students: “We found evidence of Momo among our students. Please check your children’s mobile phones”. Several English schools in the Canary Islands have also contacted us and warned against Momo. This is combined with a general warning about the risk associn ated with unlimited access to social networks.

La Esperanza tragedy averted
Last minute rescue Guardia Civil officers recently rescued a family, the parents and two children, from certain death by smoke poisoning, presumably caused by the open barbecue in their apartment. A call from a woman who apparently could not explain herself too well and was on the verge of collapse, was received by the emergency call centre at the beginning of March. She claimed to be from La Esperanza in the borough of El Rosario. However, she could not give an exact address and only named some nearby shops. The woman was the only member of the family who remained conscious as her husband and two children had already passed out. Due to their detailed local knowledge the officers were able to locate the apartment quickly. Inside, they heard the voice of a woman stammering irrational sentences. All windows and doors of the house were locked and in addition secured with

bars, which made it difficult for the officers to gain access. They finally managed to open a sliding window to the room where the woman was located. After being given oxygen, the woman became a
little more coherent. The officers asked her to open more windows and pass the keys through the bars so that they could finally gain access. At that moment the fire brigade and ambulances arrived.
Together they were able to save the family of four and take them to the HUC University Hospital in La Laguna, where their carbon monoxide poisoning was treated in a n hyperbaric chamber.

Graffiti disfigures the landscape
Stop the graffiti! This is the response of the Gran Canaria Island Council to the graffiti sprayers on the island. This is not a friendly request, but it points out that graffiti is an attack on public and private property, which can be punished with severe penalties. The Gran Canaria Island Council signed the European Landscape Agreement PTE5 in Florence in the year 2000. This plan includes, among other things, the removal of billboards and posters that have already destroyed the landscape. Often the graffiti is even tagged by its authors, and now whoever the individuals are behind the fantasy names is the subject of a police investigation so that they can be called to account. Cleaning such disfigured walls, façades or even greenhouses incurs a considerable public cost. In the course of landscape conservation, bulky
waste from private and public properties is also being cleared. The island council will invest a total of around €40 million in the initiative over the next few years. It is, of course, particularly annoying when over-painted graffiti is brought back to life by the artists, creating an endless cycle of smearing and cleaning. That's why it has been decided to take action now with all the authorities’ n deterrent force.

During the last dance evening for the party-goers, the choice of themes for next year’s carnival was announced, which residents and visitors could have a say in via an Internet vote. From among eight proposals, The Flirtatious 50s was the chosen theme with a quarter of all votes cast. A total of 4,286 people took part in the vote. The murder of the boy, who had come from China a few months earlier to live with his father, his new wife and their child, was the cruel end of a martyred existence. The stepmother mistreated and beat him several times, even to the point when bones were broken, all this while the father, who worked all day as a cook, was away from home. She concealed this from the authorities by simply keeping him absent from school without an excuse on such days as the worst of the damage could be seen. The chain of violence caused the boy to freeze at any criticism from his stepmother and to endure everything she dished out until his tragic murder on May 8, 2016. At first she beat the child with her fist for 40 minutes and then showered him with cold water. The maltreated boy went to bed and stayed there until the stepmother came back later with a 25-centimetre shovel with a metal blade and hit him again. At first he had tried to snatch the shovel from her, but then he simply held still.

"That made me even more angry. I hated him" the stepmother explained during the trial. She hit him again and again and consciously wanted to inflict pain on him. Then she left him lying in bed for hours, where the boy suffered an agonising death because of his injuries. Then at around midnight, about an hour and a half after the boy had taken his last breath, she called the emergency services. The prosecution considered it proven that the woman struck the child with particular malice and harshness, well aware of the danger it posed to his life and limb. It was also aggravated by the fact that it was a matter of parental dependence and betrayal. Her
arguments "I only thought of my own son" or "The boy did not want to learn and did not respect me" or "I only wanted to improve his future through austerity" were not accepted by anyone in the courtroom and the maximum sentence of 25 years for murder and another two years for repeated child abuse was demanded by the prosecution. The father, who claimed not to know about the beatings and the 65 unexcused days absent from school because he had always been at work, was sentenced to two years in prison for neglecting his parental duty of care, and child abuse by failing to help. The stepmother’s sentence is yet to be n announced.

The police are investigating a 31-year-old driver from La Palma who was on his way to Santa Cruz de La Palma via the new Túnel de la Cumbre in the borough of Breña Alta. He was caught in a radar trap while he was speeding along at 182 km/h. Exceeding the speed limit by 92 kilometres per hour is far from being considered a trivial offence. Such a frenzy represents a substantial traffic risk, which is strictly punished. The Guardia Civil traffic division immediately requested the help of colleagues who stopped the speeding car. The driver must expect a prison sentence, a fine and the withdrawal of his driving licence for between one and four years. Be warned, traffic checks, and speed checks in particular, are being carried out in order to reduce the number of accidents on Canarian roads. These road safety checks are part of the strategy of the Guardia Civil Action Plan 2011-2020. n

Luis Padilla, the Canarian Government’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended a ceremony in March dedicated to the Canarian people who were instrumental in the founding of San Antonio in Texas. A statue, a sculpture by Armando Hinojosa, representing the founders of the town and portraying a Canarian couple in classic costume with a A homage to the Canarian people Franciscan priest and a prison soldier was inau- in San Antonio gurated, and it stands in one of the main squares in the town which was last year officially named the Plaza de Las Islas Canarias. The Canarians emigrated to America in the 18th century to escape the poverty in the archipelago caused by poor harvests. One of the expeditions founded the town of San Antonio and set up a municipal government, led by President Juan Leal, which they called the Cabildo. To this day, Canarian descendants are united in an association in the Saint Bernard Parish and every year they remember the festivals of the islanders. This year the guest was the folklore group Timayba from Lanzarote. An estimated 50,000 people also with Canarian ancestors live in the neighbouring state of Louisiana. In the last decade, the Canary Islanders Heritage Society in Louisiana has been especially responsible for bringing the old traditions and festivals back to the forefront and preserving them. n

Currently, one Local Police officer and one technician from the local council have each been trained as drone pilots while a third is currently undergoing further training. This is to

The drone is equipped with two cameras, a normal image camera and a thermal imaging camera, which are of inestimable value especially when searching for missing persons. respond to the plague due to pressure from the public. In mid-February, biologist David Hernández, in collaboration with Apinsa, was commissioned to carry out a study on
the real distribution of termites in the borough. This study was financed with €30,000 from the local budget. A further €200,000 is to be made available to affected residents
so that they can renovate their houses and free them from termites, with a sum of approximately €3,000 estimated per house. An urban contact telephone line has been set up. In Arona, a biologist was contracted at the beginning of March to confirm that the termites are present in the green area of the Avenida Las Américas, as suspected, in order to initiate targeted action against the insects. The plague control technicians and the biologists confirmed that the termites are present on the coast of Tacoronte at Valle Guerra near La Laguna and in Arona, in a very limited area. Possible occurrences in Candelaria and Puerto de Santiago are currently under investigation, but are considered rather unlikely. Another possible hotspot is the PIRS plant in Arico, where island waste has been incinerated since 2005. It cannot be ruled out that contaminated material which was simply disposed of
by house owners, has arrived and that the insects have settled there. That is why expert Miguel Gaju considers it important that the PIRS plant should also be examined for possible traces of termites. Additionally, earth masses, depots, wood or plant remains, which could be used to spread termites, should be specifically controlled. The faster the experts act, the more efficient the fight against the plague can be. The Reticulitermes flavipes species are termites that live underground and can build gigantic tunnel systems of up to 5,000 square metres. They also expand their tunnel systems into wood, ceilings, floors and walls. In this way, they provide themselves with food. However, it is precisely this widely ramified network that can also be used to kill the termite population with poisoned baits. If you suspect that termites have settled in your area, you can contact your local n council at any time.
La Palma
Action plan in case of a volcanic eruption La Palma Island Council, through the Emergency and Citizen Participation Bureau led by Carmen Brito, has commissioned the development of an emergency plan in the event of a volcanic eruption (PAIVPAL). The plan is to be drawn up by scientists from the University of La Laguna, in collaboration with volcanologists such as Carmen Romero Ruiz and Cayetano Guillén Martín. It will list what needs to be done before, during and after a volcanic emergency and how the public as well as the emergency services should behave. Among other bodies, the activities of the Red Cross, the fire brigade, the police forces and the civil defence unit are included. In addition, a sub plan, involving a possible evacuation, is being prepared. As soon as the action plan is ready, which is expected to be in a few months' time, it will be made public. This will make La Palma the first island in the Canaries to publish a concrete emergency
plan. The recent light, unnoticeable earthquakes remind us that the archipelago is still volcanically active and that an emergency plan makes sense. The better each individual is prepared, whether a member of the public or of the emergency services, the more efficiently and faster can action n be taken.

At last, all the political authorities concerned, the Island Council, Canary Island Government and local councils, have united to declare war on the invasive species of termites (Reticulitermes flavipes) which are affecting Tenerife. A specific action plan to eradicate the insects is to be drawn up in consultation with Miguel Gaju Ricart, a Spanish expert in zoology at the University of Córdoba. Gaju has already successfully fought termites in a village near Palencia. The strategy for Tenerife will be defined during several working sessions with the councils in the affected communities of Tacoronte, La Laguna and Arona. This includes educating the public so that they can discover termite infestations as quickly as possible, report them and combat them in a targeted manner. In the same way, technicians from the local councils are to be trained to deal with this problem. An important part, which still has to be clarified, relates to disposal, since there is no special incineration plant in Tenerife as there is on the Spanish Peninsular. Spain's central government has also been asked to help with this issue. It would be possible, for example, to set up containers in which local residents could dispose of their affected wood

Successful Interpol detentions The Guardia Civil recently arrested one of Spain’s ten most wanted criminals in Bulgaria. The man is accused of being a member of a criminal organisation which smuggled cocaine from South America to Spain and Europe and laundered the money obtained. The Spanish national had been the subject of an international detention order issued by the Spanish judiciary in 2013. He had been unmasked as one of the masterminds of the gang during Operation GOBE, in which 150 suspects were investigated. He was mainly responsible for importing cocaine and laundering the drug money. He received the goods in Spain, paid for them and distributed them. Thanks to help from the public and the coordination of the Guar-
dia Civil with Bulgarian colleagues and the Sirene Border Offices of both countries, the wanted man was located in the port city of Varna, where he had been living for some time. He had put on about 50 kilograms in weight to change his appearance and he was considered dangerous and potentially armed. At the time of his arrest, he was on the verge of leaving for Venezuela. His flight there, with forged documents, was scheduled for a few days later.
Successful international police work Last year, the Guardia Civil UCO Department arrested 201 people wanted by the Spanish or foreign authorities on the basis of international or European detention orders. In the previous year,
there had been 159 such arrests. Particularly noteworthy are the cases in which foreigners fled to Spain and were arrested. Some 26 cases are known from Germany, 23 from Romania, 19 from Italy and 17 from France. Guardia Civil officers travelled several times to different countries to identify and arrest fugitives wanted by the Spanish authorities for crimes committed in Spain. A total of 24 suspects were arrested in Colombia, Romania, France, Argentina and Sweden. Of last year’s detainees, three were for murder or homicide, two had abused minors, 16 were wanted in connection with drug trafficking and belonging to a criminal organisation, nine for fraud, three on charges of money laundering and the others for various other serious offences. n

Fire brigade called out less The balance sheet with regard to the activities of the professional fire brigade in Tenerife looked positive for 2018. The fire fighters were called out 4,063 times, about ten per cent less than the previous year. In 1,754 cases, the three most frequent reasons for deployment were to actually extinguish fires, in 609 cases people or animals had to be rescued and on 528 occasions doors needed to be opened. According to the assessment by José Antonio Valbuena, the Island Councillor for Security, the decline in the number of fires is associated with increased reconnaissance and preventive work. Javier Rodríguez, director of the professional fire brigade, pointed out that other important factors had also been tackled in the past year. For example, the firemen's clothing had been renewed, new vehicles were purchased, a training plan was implemented and a hall in Güímar was purchased in which an additional fire station is to be built in

The remaining operations were spread over various causes of fires. After fires, rescue operations and door openings, the fire brigade was most frequently deployed to help in accidents. They also had to intervene in building damage, 31 times in connection with hazardous materials and several
times due to damage caused by water seepage or weather phenomena. Looking at the operating times, the period between 8pm and 10pm, especially on Saturday evenings, can be regarded as the fire brigade rush hours. The month with the most operations in 2018 was August. Almost 90 per cent of all fire fighting operations last year were covered by the professional fire brigade and the remaining ten per cent by the voluntary fire brigades stationed in Adeje, Santiago del Teide, Güímar and La Laguna. The capital, Santa Cruz, is at the top of the list in terms of the places where the fire service was most frequently requested, followed by San Miguel and La Laguna, which are jointly ranked second, and then La Orotava and n Icod de los Vinos.

Lifebelts for dangerous coastlines
In Lanzarote, the Consortium for Safety and Emergencies, in collaboration with the KrogagerFonden Foundation chaired by Rune Soren Eilif Knude, has begun to install lifebelts on dangerous stretches of the coastline. In total, the foundation, which is associated with Club La Santa, intends to install 60 such lifebelts, on the coasts of Tías, San Bartolomé, Yaiza and Arrecife by the beginning of the summer. In an emergency, they can be thrown to a person in distress at sea so that he or she can stay afloat until the emergency services arrive. The installation began in the bay of Barranoco del Quiquere in the borough of Tías. In Yaiza, Tinajo, Teguise and La Graciosa these safety measures have already been implemented. Coastal sections have been selected that are not covered by a lifeguard service, but are frequently visited by bathers or anglers. The locations have also been based n on a study carried out by emergency service staff.

Missing person statistics The province of Gran Canaria, along with Catalonia, Galicia and Andalusia, is one of the regions in Spain with the highest number of open cases of disappearances. The statistics recently presented by Spain's Minister for the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska cover the period from 2010 to the end of 2018, which indicate that the highest risk of simply disappearing is in Barcelona, Gran Canaria, the Balearic Islands, Murcia and Málaga. During the period under review, a total of 174,883 people disappeared in Spain. The majority of cases, 58 per cent, were male and 66 per cent of the missing persons cases relate to minors. Of the those, 163,405 were found a success rate of 93 per cent. However, the whereabouts of the remaining seven per cent remains unclear. Sometimes the family members remain missing for years, which places a particularly heavy burden on their relatives. During the presentation of the study in Madrid, Minister

Grande-Marlaska stressed the great importance of the assistance from fellow citizens in clearing up many cases, and cooperation with the public is essential, especially with regard to the disappearance of children and adolescents. Contrary to popular opinion, the disappearance of a person should
be reported as soon as possible. He stressed "It’s not correct that only after 24 and/or 48 hours a missing person report can be placed. The faster the police know, the faster they can react adequately" thus clearing up a widespread misconception. The first few hours can be crucial.
The Minister took the opportunity to refer to the 116000 hotline, whereby missing persons can be reported directly. The National Centre for Disappeared Persons (Cndes) advises relatives in several languages, helps to initiate the necessary steps and supports the family during the search. The App Alertcops enables the direct reporting of disappeared persons via mobile phones and can also enable the geographical location of the person. The reasons for these disappearances are many. Some people disappear deliberately after an argument in the family or in their immediate environment, but for others there can be other reasons beyond their control and especially in these cases, it’s vital to act quickly and perhaps save lives. The SOS Desaparecidos platform, which can be used to quickly distribute missing person reports, also represents an important element in the search. Fortunately, many reports turn out to be n false alarms.

Sports shoes for Equatorial Guinea For the sixth time in Lanzarote, the 'Zapatillas Solidarias' (Solidarity shoes) project is collecting used but well-preserved sports shoes or trainers up to March 25. The initiative was launched in 2013 by the basketball club, Club de Baloncesto Conejero and the Guinea Basketball Federation, supported by the Hermanos Martínez Foundation. Together they will hold a campus in Malabo and Bata for the poorest children and youngsters. When they realised at the beginning of the cooperation how poor the sports equipment in the African country was, the idea was born to help. It was very successful, from 150 pairs of sports shoes in the first year, approximately 2,000 pairs of sports shoes were distributed to the children and young people last year. This year, a high participation in the fundraising campaign is also expected. Within the framework of the

Puccini‘s Turandot
The last opera by Giacomo Puccini is set in the Orient, and the plot is based on an old Persian poem. It tells the story of the cruel Princess Turandot, who will only marry the prospective groom who can solve her three riddles. Those who fail must die. Musically, Puccini has created a masterpiece with this opera that is characterised by arias such as Nessun dorma, In questa reggia and Signore, ascolta, which have also conquered the stages of the world outside opera. Giampaolo Bisanti from Milan will celebrate his debut as musical director with this performance. He has been the musical director of the Petruzzelli Foundation in Bari, Italy since November 2016 and is known for his sensitive musical interpretation. The opera cast will be accompanied by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, OST, and the Tenerife Opera Choir. The leading roles will be played by Tiziana Caruso as Turandot and Carlo Ventre as Calaf. The National Police recently arrested a man in Santa Cruz who is accused of the armed robbery of at least three supermarkets in Santa Cruz and La Laguna. He followed the same pattern in all three cases, which is why investigators quickly surmised that one perpetrator was responsible for all three robberies. He went to the supermarket, put a balaclava over his head at a suitable moment to hide his face and threatened the employees at the tills with a knife. He helped himself to the daily takings and made off in a car. It was the escape vehicle that led the police to the 33-year-old suspect. They used the number plate to identify the owner and located him in Santa Cruz. During a search of the vehicle, the knife with which he threatened his victims was found. In addition, the clothes the man had worn during the robberies were still in the vehicle. The suspect has already been convicted several times previously for other offences and has now n appeared before the magistrate.

Five cultivation tables have recently been set up on the terrace at the Vallehermoso retirement home in La Gomera, where strawberries, lettuce and culinary herbs such as parsley, oregano and marjoram are being grown. The raised beds are at a height which enables the residents to easily work on them while sitting or standing, without much effort. “More activities are planned. These include meetings between senior citizens and pupils, and activities in disability and family centres. We want to create a space for exchanging information and cultivating values that are part of our identity” explained Rebeca Escuela, the councillor for local development. “In this way, we want to contribute to preserving the rural traditions and culture. We want the participants to see themselves as part of a project to preserve our culture and the history of our people” she said. The activities, which also include gastronomic events and lectures on the medicinal use of traditional plants, are n grouped together under the Red Terra initiative.

Positive energy balance In the last four years, the Canary Island Government, led by President Fernando Clavijo, has succeeded in giving an important boost to clean energy production. Wind energy, in particular, has taken a major step forward on the islands in the last three years during which €335 million have been invested in wind farms. This has increased capacity by 253 megawatts and created 2,282 jobs. The Canary Islands Government is supporting 753 energy efficiency and renewable energy projects with over €23 million to benefit communities, households and businesses. As a result of the conversion to green energy, the Canary Islands have emitted 1.8 million tonnes less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This is equivalent to the emissions of 1.5 million cars travelling an average of 10,000 kilometres. At the same time, the cost of crude oil consumption was reduced by €1.4 million. Compared with a car that consumes an average of 10 litres per 100 kilometres, it’s equivalent to 22,000 circuits around the world. The increased conversion to renewable energies and thus to an energy model of the 21st century was one of the priorities that Clavijo set for his term in office. "On the way to a more sustainable archipelago, we have taken up the fight against climate change in three points: The use of as much renewable energy as is possible with current technology, optimising consumption through savings and energy efficiency, and introducing fuels that are less polluting" Clavijo said. "The Canary Islands have become a pioneer in a region that makes the least use of wind energy. Capacity has almost tripled, from 164 megawatts in 2015 to 417 in December 2018," added Minister for Economy, Industry and Commerce Pedro Ortega. In Gran Canaria, a major project already underway is the hydroelectric power station at the Chira Soria reservoir, with a capacity of 200 megawatts. By Chris Martin As British expats, many of us came to live in Tenerife for similar reasons. The great weather and the low cost of living combined with daily flights to the UK, having UKTV at home, and a thriving international community all make Tenerife a great place to become an expat - but it’s not all sunshine and roses. It can be difficult to find information on important topics such as: Do I have to change my driving licence? What kind of healthcare am I entitled to? Which is the best school for my kids? A look on social media will throw up plenty of answers, but very few of them are useful or even accurate answers. Lots of unqualified people are only too keen to tell you “the best
way” to do everything, whilst qualified people will almost always charge for their time. Also, we can’t be expected to go to an accountant or solicitor for advice every time we need to do something. Many people struggle to learn Spanish, which complicates things further.
cerned about the way animals are treated, others want to be able to speak their own language in government institutions such as the employment office. Lots of local Canarian people have exactly the same concerns as us, they don’t like abusive contracts or being run
off the road either, the difference is that they know how to change things. If we were back in the UK, we would know where to direct our complaints to get something done, whether it be the local police station, or writing a letter to their MP (yes, people still do that!) Which highlights another difficulty about living here - not knowing who to turn to when we have a problem. We simply don’t have a voice. Many of us bring professions, trades, and skills from the UK that could help solve the problems around us. Some of us have been living in this community for 10 or 20 years, and know it as well as many of the locals. We as Brits form a large community here in Tenerife. We are a sizeable chunk of the population. We pay our taxes, we abide by the laws, we can be productive members of Tenerife society, but we haven’t imposed ourselves on local politics, so we don't have a voice. It doesn’t have to be like this. In the next two articles in this series, I’ll be covering why and how to get our voices heard, so we can change the things that we don’t like about our beautiful new home, and make it even better for all who live here. n
Increasing passenger arrivals
More than 3.5 million passengers The eight Canary Island airports welcomed a total of 3,586,108 passengers in February. Compared to last year, this represents an increase of around 0.7 per cent. Whilst the number of national arrivals increased by 9.5 per cent to more than 1.2 million passengers, international arrivals decreased by 2.3 per cent, but still reached more than 2.3 million, providing booming business for airport shops and ancillary service demands. Gando Airport in Gran Canaria had the highest passenger volume and, with over 1.1 million arrivals, it was able to maintain the previous year’s level. The Reina Sofía Airport in southern Tenerife ranked second with a slight increase of 2.7 per cent and 953,642 passengers. Third in February was the César Manrique Airport in Lanzarote with over half a million passengers and a slight increase of 0.9 per cent. The airports of Gran Canaria, Tenerife South and Lanzarote rank third, fifth and eighth in the overall balance of the Spanish airports managed by Aena. In terms of the archipelago, Fuerteventura, Los Rodeos (Tenerife North), La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera followed, with only Fuerteventura suffering a decline of ten per cent. La Gomera Airport recorded the highest growth of more than 76 per cent with 4,469 passenger arrivals. Overall, the number of passengers welcomed by the Canary Island airports in the first two months of the year has increased to 7,338,962, 1.2 per cent more than the previous year. It’s not only passenger handling that is showing a positive trend. In February, more than 2,679 tons of merchandise was transported, which represents an increase of over ten n per cent.

Long live the nightlife! The business association CEST Sur and politicians will debate the design of nightlife provisions at the first national congress, Spain Nightlife. Undoubtedly, a good leisure offer at night enriches a holiday resort. Amongst other
things, the prizes for Triple Excellence in Nightlife were awarded during the congress. This means that these venues are outstanding in three areas, they combine safety, acoustic quality and outstanding service. There are currently
seven restaurants with these attributes in Tenerife: Roca Negra Sunset Club, Bar Harry's, Le Club Playa Fañabé, Calma Cocktail Bar & Mirador, Monkey Beach Club, Magic Lounge Club and Marina Bay Sunset Bar.

These lucky puppies are doing really well after their traumatic start and will soon be ready for adoption from Acción del Sol
Acción del Sol Though two of the eight puppies that were dumped in a plastic container outside Tegueste church a while ago didn’t survive, the other six are doing extremely well thanks to the nutritious food and proper medical care they are receiving. They will soon be up for adoption, and it will be great for them to go to loving homes after their traumatic start in life. We’d like to remind you that it’s obligatory to have your dog micro-chipped and registered at your local town hall, and with the correct updated telephone number so you can be reunited with your dog should they get lost. It saves a lot of time and stress for your beloved pet and yourselves. We are completely full and reaching crisis point, with over 230 gorgeous dogs of all shapes and sizes looking for loving homes. From Yorkshire terriers to Dalmatians we have every type imaginable ready for adoption. We don’t charge for
adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, micro-chipped, heartworm- and flea-free, has a passport and is sterilised, the last one being compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife. How you can help Besides obvious needs such as food, water and veterinary care, a little attention is all the dogs here want. They love going out for a walk so please do come and take one out if you have time, they really will appreciate it. In addition, we always need items for the animals and refuge, such as products for our clinic and cleaning products and utensils, building materials, dog toys, leads, etc., tinned food for our elderly dogs, puppy milk, and dog jackets for when our dogs travel by flight to Germany, as well as materials to help with our educational programme (pens, paper, glue, play-doh
and crayons). Every donation is greatly appreciated. We are also desperately looking for people travelling to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Berlin or Frankfurt who would be prepared to escort a dog. All that’s needed is a little time at the airport: all necessary paperwork and handling of the dogs is done by AccionTier staff. Give me a chance! A few months ago, in November, it was a typical day at the K9 refuge. The kennels had been cleaned, our dogs were fed and walked and they were starting to settle for the night. However, the front gate then opened and a young couple came in with a small dog. She was introduced as Scrappy and automatically tugged at everyone’s heart strings. Due to personal circumstances, the young couple had to surrender Scrappy to K9, and there were tears all round when the realisation hit that they were leaving her. It was a very tough decision for them. When they left, Scrappy was settled into one of our kennels but of course this little girl was very confused and a bit fearful. She was defensive and barked and growled at first. She had no idea why she was suddenly left at K9. But just the very next day, one of our volunteers took her for a walk and her personality began to shine brightly. Scrappy is a terrier mix and is 10 years old. She currently shares a kennel with three other dogs who are all a lot younger than her. Although she is 10, she still runs around and acts like a young dog and has so much love and affection for us all at K9. She is still a little wary of new people and needs people to take their time with her, but once she knows you, the love she gives you is priceless. She is a joy to walk on and off lead, as she stays right by your side and is always waiting for a chance to be cuddled and made a fuss of. The younger dogs she shares with at the moment are all very sweet, but their excitement and energy can sometimes push Scrappy to the side, as it can be a bit too much for her. She is looking for her forever home and would make the perfect companion. She is a little fearful of children so ideally a child-free house would suit her best. Give Scrappy a chance and we promise you will not be disappointed. If you take the time to get to know her, she will be your best and forever friend! Lifesaving success extraordinary abilities and became Spanish Champion for the fifth time in a row after winning the gold medals in the 100 metre combination and the 50 metre towing as well as the silver medal for the 4 x 25 metre relay. Soon he will also compete in the Spanish Swimming Championships and the International Lifesaving Championn ships in France.
At the XXXIII Spanish Lifesaving Championships held recently in Torrevieja, Alicante, the Canary Island participants came out with honours. The Club Natación Martiánez from Puerto de La Cruz is the new Spanish champion in the Juvenil category. In addition to this team title, there were also outstanding individual achievements. A total of eleven new national records were set. For example Sergio Calderón González, from the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife, improved the national record in towing
a 100 metre dummy with fins to 00.46,86.
Top scores for CN Martiánez Daniela Alonso Melián, Paula María Álvarez Callejón, María Rodríguez Rodríguez de la Sierra and Andrea Esther Sosa Hernández set a new record of 01.36,63 in the four by 25 metre relay in tow. An absolute top class tow in the solos by María Rodríguez Rodríguez de la Sierra, who went all out to win the best individual performance. She took the gold medal in six
categories. The performances by Álvaro Merino and Louka Vanhoucke, who placed the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife in seventh place overall, are also worth mentioning. Thomas Holzendorf swam over 200 metres in the super lifesavers category and won an important bronze. The club Shaka Surf Life Saving from Santa Cruz debuted in the competition and reached a remarkable 20th place. Fair play, respect and equality The Canary Island government led by President Fernando Clavijo and the Spanish Olympic Committee, represented by its Managing Director Alejandro Blanco, signed an agreement in March to launch a joint campaign. The main aim is to promote Olympic values such as equal rights for men and women, inclusion, mutual respect and solidarity, and to nip any form of violence in the bud. In this sense, sport also has an educational component. In this way, especially those who start young are led from childhood into a mentality in which there is equality between women and men and in which violence, whether on or off the pitch, is not tolerated. In January the Canary Island Government decided to promote sports activities including marginalised groups such as the elderly and those with physical or mental challenges. Sport not only promotes physical well-being, but is also important in terms of participation in social and cultural life. For their part, the Olympic Committee sees an interesting area of cooperation especially in the field of eSports. The agreement with the Olympic Committee complements other Canary Island Government projects which are being carried out in close cooperation n with the Sports and Tourism Directorates.

By Chris Todd It’s no secret that CD Tenerife are the Draw Kings this season with 15 draws from their 30 matches played. They simply have not been good enough in certain areas of the pitch, especially in the attacking area hence the low goals tally, although to their credit many times they have shown spirit and determination to earn points. The blanquiazules do boast three players, Luis Milla, Racic and Jorge Saenz that would arguably walk into any team in the Second Division but the rest of the squad are on the whole very average. They are the type of players that are either on a last swansong or others who are younger and need a few more seasons under their belt. Sometimes we seem to be like the United Nations of good causes, helping players with their career rather than planning a good solid well balanced group. Frustratingly the sole aim now is to avoid relegation and from there on in start the planning for next season. However the six point cushion between the team and the drop zone is still too close for comfort and with runaway league leaders Osasuna visiting the Heliodoro Stadium in Santa Cruz on March 22 the games do not get much easier. The kickoff has been set at 8pm and will be live on Gol tv. But
better still try and get to the match, the team really needs the fans’ backing now (prices from 13€ to 31€). CD Tenerife are unhappy about being given yet another Friday night fixture, the sixth since December and they made an official complaint to try and switch the game to their preferred Saturday or Sunday slot. The league were not in a lenient mood however and the Friday night football continues with the following game against Sporting Gijon also scheduled for a Friday night. Manager Oltra, although still popular with the supporters, appears to be playing on a game to game basis to keep his job. I think it would be a mistake to sack him at this stage of the season with twelve games remaining. We ‘should’ stumble over the line with Oltra but a change now to a new manager could go one of two ways. Surely it would be too much of a risk but you never really know with this board and President. The rumour mill suggests that meetings have been held to find a replacement so we will see. Brexit seems quite well organised compared to this. 16/02/2019 Alcorcón 1:1 Tenerife The small Santo Domingo Stadium in the Madrid suburbs had been made into something of a fortress for the home side with nine wins from their 14 games played. Alcorcón are enjoying a decent enough season and were sit-
ting on the edge of the play-off area. With the backing of over 200 supporters Tenerife knew that they really needed to win after too many draws recently and for the first time in many months the team was back to full strength. The game started at a frantic pace, Dani pulled off a fine save to deny Alcorcón early on but it took a non-existent penalty to break the deadlock on 29 minutes. Tenerife defender Alberto slipped in the area and was struck on the arm by the ball and even though he had his back to the play the referee awarded a penalty. Scandalous decision! Burgos converted to give the lead to Alcorcón. If the home side edged the first half it was Tenerife that controlled the second half but as has often been the case, all the nice build-up play rarely
ended up with a shot on goal. And if you don’t shoot you don’t score! However, just as it looked as if another away defeat was on the cards up popped Nano to head the ball into the back of the net to equalise. It was some moment for the local lad and his celebrations diving into the visiting Tenerife fans behind the goal earned him a yellow card, which rules him out of the Osasuna clash. Not a clever move with Jorge Saenz and Racic already ruled out due to International duties. The 1-1 result was, on the whole, a fair result. Tenerife can be pleased with the fightback at a tricky stadium but they know that they will need to convert a few more of these draws into victories to secure their survival sooner rather n than later.
