Where’s the danger? The Special Plan for the Protection of Civilians and the Monitoring of Flood Risk Sites (Peinca) was presented earlier in the year and entered into force in mid-August. Under the plan, specialists have identified the weak spots that are threatened by possible flooding on all the Canary Islands. That may seem strange at first on the islands of eternal spring; however, though it may not rain often, it can really pour down when it does. This means that within a very short time, ravines, drainage channels and some roads can develop into swift-moving rivers that shift cars and flood homes. This is why particular importance is attached to cleaning the ravines and ditches during the dry months to clear the run-off paths. Continued on page two

Close Encounters of the Third Kind will fill the auditorium
Between September 21 and 29, the Fimucité International Festival of Film Music will once again offer classic and contemporary interpretations of well-known and popular melodies to an eager public. Based in Tenerife for the last 12 years, for the first time one of the concerts will also take place in Gran Canaria, thus integrating the neighbouring islands into this popular cultural event. This year the focus is on the great composer, concert and orchestra
pianist Jean Michel Bernard, who will perform at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna on September 21 and at the Teatro Guiniguada in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, on September 22. Recently chosen by Steinway & Sons as the manufacturer’s official artist, recognising his expressiveness, improvisational strength and charisma, he is also Ray Charles’ official pianist. The Japanese soloist Kimiko Ono will be on stage with him. The concert programme Tócala otra vez, Jean Michel (Play it again,
Jean Michel), will inspire the audience with a self-interpreted journey through the classics of film history and a repertoire that includes themes from The Pink Panther, Forrest Gump, Schindler’s List and Taxi Driver, as well as many of his own compositions which made movie history in the films La ciencia del sueño and Human Nature. Further highlights of the festival include an evening of romantic film music by The Pop Culture Band with Addicted to Love, conducted by Gon-
zalo de Araoz, on Saturday 22 at the Teatro Guimerá in Santa Cruz. The repertoire will include songs that were made popular by Spanish artists Raphael, Imperio Argentina, Karina, Marisol and Manolo Escobar. On Sunday 23, a programme for Spanish television will be recorded at the same location under the title Cine de Barrio en Concierto, with singers Esther Ovejero and Fran León and pianist David Quevedo. The specialists have given points to the various boroughs according to the level of possible risk. Above 40 is high risk. There are a total of 13 boroughs in the Islands that are in that category, most of them located in the Eastern Province in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and include San Bartolomé de Tirajana, where the risk is extremely high with 111 points. In the Tenerife province, only Santa Cruz de Tenerife with 75 points, El Hierro’s Valverde with 51, Adeje with 45 and San Sebastián de La Gomera with 41 are considered at risk. Past history is taken into consideration when assessing possible road flooding, other at-risk areas may be due to their geomorphic structure and sometimes man-made changes, and the ravines and some coasts are also a danger zone. The first may see dry gorges turn into raging rivers that take everything with them on their way, and with the second the coasts can experience the results of an open door to the sea when the tides are running high. In addition to the risk to people living in these danger zones, the possible damage to the environment or of an economic nature is also under consideration. The main area of operation under the Peinca Plan is to have a risk map ready in order to be prepared for all eventualities and thus be able to act quickly. Particular attention is paid to keeping at-risk areas clean as a preventative measure. n

Canary Islands President, Fernando Clavijo, announced the introduction of a new residents’ discount for public transport in rural areas from October. It’s intended to contribute to sustainable development and to improving the quality of life. After the 75 per cent reduction for air and ferry traffic between the islands and the Spanish mainland, public transport is now set to become more attractive again too. The Canary Islands Government will provide 30 meuros towards costs and the distribution of the discount cards will be handled by the individual Island Councils. “The discounts for Canarian residents will enable people who live in the capital cities of Las Palmas or Santa Cruz, for example, but work in the south, to travel to work every day by bus and save money compared to using their own car” said Pablo Rodríguez, the Canarian Minister for Transport and Public Works. “Projects like these contribute to equal opportunities, progress and quality of life for all” commented island president Fernando Clavijo... The introduction of the discount card has absolute priority, because it allows the islanders to use the bus and tram services in an economical way, so that public transport becomes a real alternative to the private car again” Clavijo added, thus reducing carbon dioxide emissions and the burden on Clavijo and Rodríguez (l-r) at the the environment too. n presentation

Unidentified aircraft parts found in the sea At the end of August, aircraft components that appeared off the coast of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria near the El Atlante monument caused quite a stir, sparking fears of espionage, an attack or even, in some quarters, an encounter with a different species! However, it soon became apparent that the unmanned flying object was from Earth, but where it came from was still unclear. First suspicions that it could have originated from the nearby model airfield in Los Giles were shattered due to the size of its parts. A sea rescue recovered two propellers, one of the two engines and the central part of the hull, which were covered with algae and molluscs, and transported them to the León y Castillo jetty in the port of Las Palmas, where its origin was finally determined. It was owned by the Portuguese company Tekever Autonomous
Systems. "This is a model of an AR5 aircraft built for reconnaissance flights on the high seas. It's not a spy drone. We tested the model in Peniche, north of Lisbon, in April this year and lost it. We assumed that it was on the bottom of the sea", explained Ricardo Mendes, director of the manufacturing company, upon request. Those responsible for the tests were very surprised that parts of the light aircraft had appeared 1,350 kilometres off the coast of Gran Canaria. The drones developed by the company are among the world market leaders and compete with well-known manufacturers from the USA and Israel. The value of such an aircraft depends primarily on the technology it carries. In some cases, sensors worth over a €1 million are installed. They can be used, for example, to detect pollution from ships, to moni-

tor territorial interests at sea or to locate people. This means that the valuable cargo is not generally installed until the aircraft's technology is mature, hence the tests. Tekever is one of the world's pioneers in this
field. The AR5 model can fly at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour for around 20 hours with a low load. With a payload of 50 kilograms, the flight capacity is reduced to approximately n twelve hours.

In the Canary Islands, on average one in eight women will develop breast cancer in the course of their lives. That diagnosis affected 1,132 people last year in the archipelago. In Tenerife alone, more than 300 mastectomies have to be performed every year to treat the disease. For women, this loss is often difficult to cope with. The city of Arona, through the Walk for Life Foundation, has now joined the The BRA Project initiative, which allows An initiative for women affected by breast cancer
Farewell Víctor Victor, a 50-year-old diving specialist and known familiarly as ‘El Portugés’ was a popular figure for many years at the Centro de Buceo Margullar diving school in Arinaga, Gran Canaria. On the penultimate Friday in August he was preparing for the second dive of the day, but collapsed suddenly on the Paseo de Arinaga having suffered a cardiac arrest. Two nurses who happened to be nearby and the local lifeguards
immediately started resuscitation and were able to bring the man back to life. He was taken to the Hospital Insular in an ambulance and was released a few days later. However, less than a week afterwards he was found dead in his apartment. A blocked vein probably led to another heart attack. His colleague Juan sadly said, "We were caught out. In all these years he has never complained of heart problems or any other

pain. I spoke to him on the phone the night before. He was dead in the morning." Victor's ashes will now rest on the seabed forever, just as he had wished. The diving school

Diving instructor suffers heart attack

Every year, the Walk for Life Foundation organises a march through the city centre in the southern communities of Arona and Adeje to raise funds for cancer research and to support patients and their families. Last year, over 5,000 people took part in the initiative. The BRA project is one of the ventures

On the last Thursday in August, a young girl was in distress in the sea at Playa Salinetas in the borough of Telde in Gran Canaria. Thanks to the attention and professionalism of a lifeguard, she came out of the water alive. During a tour of the beaches, Saro Sosa, acting councillor responsible for the beaches and their safety, thanked the young lifeguard for his efforts. She emphasised that thanks to the work of the lifeguards, people can bathe safely, and they also keep a watchful eye during summer festivals and sporting events. Last year, the lifeguards had to intervene and rescue 389 times on the beaches in the Telde catchment area. Fortunately, there were no fatal Sosa thanks the lifeguards n incidents.

During the weekends, visitors will be offered typical Canarian folklore performances, on Saturdays in Parque Santa Catalina and on Sundays in Parque Doramas. There is also an art and crafts market every Sunday in the old town of La Vegueta in Plaza del Pilar Nuevo - an attraction that’s intended to tempt passengers to take a stroll, enjoy the scenery and shop. During the 2018/19 cruise season, 239 stops by 51 different ships are expected
in Gran Canaria. The liners Aida, Mein Schiff 1 and TUICruises, among others, will be arriving this year. Around 600,000 cruise passengers are welcomed every year to the island. For 87 of the stops, the port of La Luz is the shipping company's base port. This means that the passenger changeover will take place there. After their cruise, holidaymakers often spend a few more days on the beach or on a boat trip and slowly get used to life on dry n land again.

The season of cruise ships, which sail in the Canary Island waters mainly from October to April, will begin soon. At that time of year, when it becomes uncomfortably cool on the northern routes or in the Mediterranean, the sun still shines on the Central Atlantic and warms the sun-hungry win-
ter holidaymakers. In order to be well prepared for this influx, a new information point is currently being built between the accesses to the Santa Catalina and Wilson piers and the El Muelle shopping centre in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It’s compact with an open plan design, a glass front, a green
façade made with artificial grass, and gives the appearance of a snail which has just slithered ashore out of the water. In the light-flooded interior, passengers will be welcomed at one of two desks and advised on how they can arrange their stay in Gran Canaria according to their preferences. The new
office is to be completed and set into operation by November at the latest. In addition, information signs will be installed over the course of the autumn to show the newly arrived cruise passengers which attractions can be reached within a radius of one and a half kilometres. Hippos find new home up to 30. Usually, the females take over the dominant role in the herd and they will undoubtedly thrill visitors with their cheery antics. Sadly, these charismatic animals are also threatened with extinction, mostly because their habitat is dwindling due to mining and the felling of trees, and they are also widely hunted. Their population has halved in the last 30 years. The presence of both species in Loro Parque is intended to educate visitors to the issue of species protection and the conservation of natural habitats. n
At the beginning of September, Loro Parque in Puerto de La Cruz became home to two new attractions: Pygmy hippos and ring-tailed lemurs. Adela and Malela are the names of the two pygmy hippos, who came to Tenerife from Germany and the Czech Republic. The hippos, which are at risk of extinction, are
vegetarians and feed mainly on leaves, ferns, herbs, roots and fallen fruits, as well as marsh plants occasionally. Unlike most animals, this species uses its lips instead of its teeth to eat food, and their new habitat was modelled on the natural swamps of their homeland. Another unusual feature of the spe-
cies, which originates from the African continent, is that, unlike common hippos, they do not bear their young in the water but on land. Nevertheless, the young animals can already swim immediately after birth. The ring-tailed lemurs, from Madagascar, are very social animals that live in groups of

For the third year running, the Arona in White festival will bring together people aged over 55 for an evening of entertainment and fun. Open to both residents and visitors, the action will start at 7pm on September 7 and take place in the Plaza del Pescador in Los Cristianos. Over four hours there will be a range of shows, live bands and local food. The motto of the event is ‘getting older actively’, and is intended to promote social interaction and healthy living. Surge in demand for fivestar hotels
Demand for five-star hotels rose by over 17 per cent
The evaluation of the tourism statistics for the month of July showed 540,904 holidaymakers in Tenerife who were accommodated in hotels or holiday apartments. Compared with July last year, this represents an increase of 4.3 per cent. In the first seven months of 2018, around 3.3 million holidaymakers were registered, roughly the same number as
in the previous year. Tourists staying in hotels increased by 0.8 per cent and those using accommodation other than hotels by 11.6 per cent. The high demand for hotels in the luxury sector is particularly striking. Overnight stays in fivestar hotels rose by over 17 per cent, while demand fell in the three and four star categories. A look at nationalities shows that the national market grew

by 8.5 percentage points and the international market by 2.7 per cent. The Germans in particular were ahead with an increase of 16 per cent. They were followed by the Irish (11 per cent), the Dutch (3.3 per cent), the French (2.2 per cent) and the Italians (1.2 per cent). The markets in Eastern Europe, the Nordic countries and Switzerland also showed positive trends. The British market declined slightly by 0.8 percentage points. The Belgians (minus 7.7 per cent), Austrians (minus 8.9 per cent) and
Russians (minus 14.9 per cent) suffered major setbacks. In terms of the distribution of holidaymakers, the La Laguna-Bajamar-La PuntaTacoronte-Tegueste region in particular benefited in the first seven months of this year, with growth of over 45 per cent. The north in general showed a slight upward trend, which was mainly reflected outside the hotel supply. In the south, visitor numbers fell slightly by 0.7 per cent to date, while in Santa Cruz they fell n by 3.6 per cent.

A senior citizen‘s nightmare
In the early hours of one morning at the end of August, an emergency call was received from Calle ElĂas Ramos GonzĂĄlez in Santa Cruz. A woman explained that at that moment there were three burglars in her apartment who had tied her up and threatened her. She had only just been able to free herself and lock herself in her room, but the men were still in her home. Immediately a police patrol set off to help the 70-yearold. On arrival at the scene, the officers watched through a window as the three suspected burglars were coming down the stairs. The moment the trio noticed the police presence, they turned on their heels and ran upstairs to try and find another way out. However, the three burglars, aged 38, 27 and 21, were caught and arrested. The victim reported that the men had surprised her in her sleep. She woke up when they were putting duct tape on her mouth. The burglars tied her hands and feet with cable ties. They threatened and shook her to find out where she kept her money, and they turned the whole place upside down. Loro Parque in Puerto de La Cruz was recently voted Best Zoo in the World for the second year running, based on the Travellers’ Choice 2018 survey on the travel site TripAdvisor. This award followed the success of Siam Park, which was voted the Best Water Park in the World for the fifth time in a row. The recognition confirms Loro Parque’s role as an authentic wildlife conservation centre, whose pillars are education, species conservation and raising the awareness of its visitors on issues such as threats to wildlife and ecosystems. With this and many other successes in protecting wildlife on land and at sea, Loro Parque reaps the fruits of a corporate policy that continuously reinvests profits in the development of the company and in the constant improvement of animal welfare. In the past, the Loro Parque Foundation has invested over $18 million in various conservation projects around the globe. The best at Boreal The Boreal Festival, an environmental and cultural event, will take place in Los Silos between September 20 and 23 for the 11th year running. Long since evolved from its roots as a fringe event into a highly popular get-together, last year it attracted around 20,000 visitors as well as being awarded the title of Premio Fest in the category of diversity and equality: The first to have received it in the Canary Islands and Spain. Once again, the festival will offer some of the best musical entertainment for the whole family, as well as stalls, exhibitions, children’s activities, workshops, gastronomy and much more, all with an eco and equal rights message. Music plays a central theme to the entertainment, with three different stages offering a total of 25 concerts - 80 per cent of which will be given by female artists. Headliners
include Lisa Hannigan from Ireland, Marinah from Catalonia (from the group Ojos de Brujo), Baloji from DR Congo, Daby Touré from Mauritania, and the Touaregs, Les Filles de Illighadad and Tcheka from Cape Verde. French
artist Féloche, who inspired the audience at the Boreal 2015 festival, is expected by many with anticipation. London-based North American Jesca Hoop will also be giving a pre-festival concert in Santa Cruz on September
15. The exact location will be announced later. Others performing for the first time in Spain during the three-day fest include the South Korean group The Tune, Jenifer Solidade and Mayra Neves from Cape Verde, the Norwegian Siv Jakobsen, Finnish Maija Kauhanen, La Lá, from Peru, Vivi Pozzebón from Argentina, South African Bongeziwe Mabandla, North American Becca Mancari, Alsarah & The Nubatones from Sudan, the Tunisian duo Ÿuma and the multicultural combo Mambe & Danochilango. In addition, Onda Vaga from Argentina and La Baq from Brazil will be introducing themselves. Anyone who is in a holiday mood and experiencing a fresh infatuation, especially when they have been drinking alcohol, is likely to forget to use a condom and this can lead to avoidable consequences.
Condoms prevent more than pregnancy The World Health Organisation (WHO) constantly warns of sexually transmitted diseases on its website and stresses the protection that is possible with the correct use of condoms. The organisation says "It’s one of the most efficient ways to protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS". The latest data from the Canary Islands department for public health, show that this recommendation applies not only to developing countries, but is also important in European latitudes and especially in popular holiday areas. It warns of the rising numbers of sexually transmitted diseases. Last year the number of cases of typical venereal diseases increased dramatically and men are particularly affected. In 2017, 232 people (2016: 177) were diagnosed with the gonococcal infection known as gonorrhea, 88 (2016: 37) with chlamydia

Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Treponema Pallidum. It enters the human body through the mucous membranes and spreads through the blood stream. The disease runs in phases. At the beginning, skin changes are most noticeable, but if left untreated, the bacterium can damage the internal organs and even lead to death. HIV infection is transmitted by the HIV virus and is the only one of these sexually transmitted diseases without a cure. This makes it all the more important to avoid infection. Thanks to modern drugs, patients can now keep the disn ease under control.

British holidaymakers traditionally make up the bulk of tourism on Tenerife, ahead of the Germans. Last year 2,065,000 British tourists came to the largest Canary Island and in the first half of this year 965,000 British tourists have already visited Tenerife. A sample of about a thousand families was asked about their preferences and decision criteria via the ‘On the beach’ travel website. The result showed
that most voted for Tenerife as a top beach holiday destination, ahead of Mallorca, Costa del Sol, the Portuguese Algarve and Gran Canaria, which occupied places two to five. Cyprus, Lanzarote, Costa Blanca, Ibiza and Turkey followed – making a total of three Canary Islands in the top ten in this survey. The study didn’t only concentrate on the destinations, but also covered the criteria by which the holiday destination

Former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (PSOE) spent the whole of August in his holiday home in Lanzarote. When he arrived at the annual meeting with socialist party colleagues at the Bodega La Florida in San Bartolomé, Zapatero declared "This island is the best place I know to relax, feel good and enjoy life, especially because the people are so kind and the landscape is so incomparable. It would only take me one small step to remain here." Local and regional comrades and the Secretary General of the Canary Islands Socialists, Ángel Victor Torres, got together for the annual summer meeting. Torres is considered a likely candidate for the Canary Islands' presidency in the next elections. Zapatero not only talked with his party colleagues, but also listened to the needs of the so-called
'Kellys' and the Platform for Decent Housing. The hotel cleaners (Kellys) are currently fighting under this name for better working conditions in the hotel industry and the recognition of back pain as an occupational disease, amongst other things. And the issue of affordable housing has become an existential issue for many islanders, because in Lanzarote too, the rental prices have become unaffordable for the local people due to holiday apartment platforms. Zapatero commented "This is an historic moment, because the objective data and the general political and social reality in the country mean that there is a good chance that another socialist could become President of the Canary Islands." He added "Even if it is not easy to improve the archipelago, because these islands
already have so many qualities, a socialist leadership would do the Islands good". Angel Victor Torres emphasised that "The socialists currently have the largest number of mayors in the Canary Islands, they preside over the Canary Islands Association of Municipalities and hold offices in various island councils. A socialist presidency would be different and the Islands would benefit".
Holidays in paradise Zapatero's preference for the volcanic island of Lanzarote was awakened on his first visit in 2003, shortly before he won the general elections and became Spain's prime minister. As prime minister, he spent several weeks in August 2005, 2006 and 2009 at the listed building La Mareta in Costa Teguise, a Royal Resi-
dence after King Hussein of Jordan gifted it to King Juan Carlos of Spain. Three years later in 2012, after his loss at the polls, he chose Puerto Calero in Yaíza to recover and since 2013 he has chosen Famara, in the north west of the island. He rented a bungalow in the small Los Noruegos development for years and last year he bought a holiday home there. After renovation work, the Zapatero family was able to spend their holidays in their own summer residence for the first time this year. It has views of the small island of La Graciosa, the rugged Risco de Famara massif and the extensive beach of Famara, which is especially appreciated by surfers. The former prime minister is often to be seen jogging there. He also appreciates the simple, lovable idyll of the place and likes to visit local restaurants with his wife Sonsoles Espinosa, who is a passionate diver. Their daughters Alba and Laura were not present this summer. During the last visits of the former prime minister, who is still protected by Guardia Civil bodyguards and police officers when he is on the island, their poor working conditions were a recurring topic of discussion. They had to take care of the politician's safety in the scorching heat, under a parasol. With the purchase of the summer home, the situation has also improved for them. A small, air-conditioned container office with sanitary facilities is now their workplace whilst the 57-year-old politician is in Lanzarote with n his wife.

No more free hand luggage It’s only been about seven months since Ryanair changed its baggage rules and now the airline has made another modification which will enter into force on November 1. Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer explained “From November 2018, we will introduce a new, cheaper 10kg checked-in baggage allowance and change our hand baggage regulations to avoid delays in boarding or take-off. Customers with Priority Boarding will continue to enjoy two free carry-on bags. All other customers (without Priority Boarding) may take a free (small) piece of hand luggage on board and those who wish to check in a second larger piece of luggage weighing up to ten kilograms can prebook from eight euros. These new regulations will speed up the boarding process and reduce flight delays. These changes will not affect 60 per cent of customers and we expect the remaining 40 per cent to opt for priority boarding or a 10 kilogram checked baggage item, or travel with just one (free) small piece of baggage, as 30 per cent already do today.” You should be aware that the new rule also applies to existing bookings made from September 1. The Irish airline charges eight euros for each piece of hand luggage weighing up to ten kilograms if it is booked with the flight reservation. Subsequently, it costs €10 or €25 if it is only registered at the airport. Hand luggage will be transported in the cargo hold as normal baggage and must therefore be checked in. If you want to avoid this, you can pay a surcharge as a Priority Customer or pay up for the categories Flexi Plus, Plus or Family Plus and you may then take the additional piece of luggage on board. But be careful: there are only 95 priority seats per aircraft. All other passengers are only allowed to carry one free piece of hand luggage, which must not exceed 40x20x25 centimetres. This corresponds to a handbag, a backpack or a laptop bag. activists invade dolphin show
Just minutes before a dolphin show began at Loro Parque, three radical activists, Ronny, Renate and Peter from the Vegan Strike Group organisation, suddenly jumped into the dolphin pool on the last Sunday in August to protest against the keeping of dolphins and other marine mammals in captivity. They demanded the closure of the park. Thanks to the trusting relationship and the close connection between the animals and their trainers, it was possible to prevent the dolphins from becoming scared and panicking. You can never predict an animal's reactions at such times. It could have been that they hurt each other unintentionally in fear or excitement, or even one of the activists or their trainers. Two dolphinarium staff jumped into the pool, pushed the activists ashore and they were taken away. For the Parque, an incident of this kind not only means an unpleasant interruption of daily activities, but is above all associated with other consequences. Among other things, the seven million litres of water in the basin must be drained and replaced as a precautionary measure to prevent possible water contamination. The public reacted rather calmly and waited patiently, whilst

at the same time they clearly expressed their indignation and rejection of such activities. In a press release, the Loro Parque management expressed their thanks to those present and for all the support they have received in response to the report on social networks.
Animal protection or media staging? Those who take the trouble to take a closer look at the Vegan Strike Group, which, as the group emphasises, is behind ‘peaceful’ protests, will only find Facebook and Twitter accounts and a Dutch website
with a post office box address at Stiens in the Netherlands. There appears to be no foundation, no commitment to environmental protection projects, no accounting of donations, no transparency. The group has existed since July 2013 and has apparently set itself the goal of fighting against the supposed abuse of dolphins, whales and sea lions and bullfighting. They have boasted that the incident in Puerto de La Cruz was the 14th protest action in dolphinariums worldwide. That's exactly what you can see on the social networks: They travel around the globe to create as much media attention as possible against various institutions and bullfighting arenas to raise funds. If anyone is hurt in the process, all the better, as that makes their heroic role appear even more superior. While the activists claim that they were able to leave the park unharmed through the staff exit, eyewitnesses say that they left the park in the back of a National Police car.
Questionable animal welfare In an official statement, Loro Parque management suggested to the activists in the name of so-called animal protection that they look to the approxi-
mately 100,000 sharks which are hunted annually for their fins, mutilated and then tossed back into the sea in agony, or the loss of rapidly dwindling forests and the contaminated oceans and thus the habitat of many species. An official statement said, "We have invested more than $18 million in animal welfare projects worldwide in recent years. Those who call themselves activists for animals and in this frame commit such radical activities only to attract media attention, should rather be asked what they themselves have achieved for nature and what economic contribution they have made to the protection and conservation of wildlife." Ostensible animal welfare actions may play well in the media, but often have dark consequences. Spectacular liberations of minks and squirrels, for example have led to severe disturbances of the ecological balance in certain areas. The activist Ric O’Barry released two dolphins in Florida who were not prepared for life in the wild. One died almost immediately, the other had to be rescued, as it was injured and malnourished. This case was taken to court and O’Barry was sentenced to pay the maximum penalty for the seriousness of the incident: $50,000. n

A press release issued by the local party ‘San Juan de la Rambla Somos Todos’, which is targeting the public stated “The island council and our local council have allowed the former flagship project Mirador de Mazapé to become a plundered ruin in a disastrous state.” The former restaurant with spectacular panoramic views directly over the steep cliff has been closed to the public since 2013. In the spring of this year, plans were announced by the Island Council to convert the building into a tourist hostel. So far, however, nothing has happened. How could it be that this property has been destroyed and literally plundered? Has this vandalism been reported? What happened to the equipment, chairs, tables, cables, power lines? Who took all this? These are the questions being asked of the politicians of the San Juan de La Rambla council and the Island Council. After all, the building was constructed with taxpayers’ money. In this regard the local party also denounce a possible “embezzlement of public funds”, claiming that the owners, the Island Council and the local council, have not fulfilled their responsibility to protect and maintain this building. n

EU survey closed
Will summer time soon be forever? British Summer Time was first introdued in 1916 and has seen many changes through the years. In 1996, the regulation, which was intended to save energy but has always been controversial, was applied throughout the EEC. In mid-August, EU citizens were able to vote on what they think of the issue of time change and how they want it to be handled. Whilst other surveys on nature and animal welfare issues have so far mobilised a maximum of half a million EU citizens, the topic of summer/winter time has prompted around 4.6 million Europeans to give their opinions. However, the Germans seem to be particularly interested in this. Three million votes alone came from them. The result of the survey is clear: around 80 per cent were in favour of stopping the clocks forward/clocks back cycle. Most people apparently wish for a permanent ‘summer time’. Even though the survey was not a referendum, EU Commission President JeanClaude Juncker spoke out in favour of taking the opinion of those questioned into account and campaigning for it in the

Foreign species invasion The number of exotic animals found in the wild on the Canary Islands is increasing, with one of the latest discoveries being a raccoon in Arona. The variety of creatures that are imported legally, or illegally, into the archipelago as pets is quite extensive. Unfortunately, whilst some escape their con-

and even a puma, which was brought into Tenerife when very young on paperwork stating it was a domestic cat. Just as with the overwhelming numbers of dogs which are abandoned throughout the archipelago, these animals are often thrown out and left to their own devices, as their own-
itat, as in the case of several families of California snakes that have spread around Valsequillo in Gran Canaria. Invasive species can seriously harm endemic animals, preying on them and forcing them to change location, or even reducing their numbers significantly. The invaders can
damage farmland and livestock. They can even unbalance the feeding habits of local animals so much that flooding can become a risk as certain areas become choked with undergrowth. Most of the animals that are caught in Tenerife are taken to the Fundación Neotrópico wildlife sanctuary in La Laguna. There they will find medical treatment if necessary, and will be cared for until a new home can be found. Some, such as sea turtles, can be released back into the wild, others will be sent to zoos. Some will stay at the centre in La Laguna forever. None are put down. Employees at the centre also help capture animals as well as train workers such as police officers in subjects like the correct handling of snakes. The borough of Arona is leading the way when it comes to dealing with the situation, thanks to an ongoing collaboration with the Fundación Neotrópico – a situation which has arisen thanks to the area’s high incidence of uninvited visitors. Incidentally, though humans are usually to blame for the introduction of exotic species, some of them make their own way here, crossing entire oceans through busy shipping traffic. Also back in June, nature photographer Santiago López González de Ara discovered a blue tang surgeon fish in the port of Santa Cruz, which is more usually found in the Caribbean. Birth of a new cultural event
SUMA Festival in Santa Úrsula
Right after the holiday period, Santa Úrsula will see the birth of a new cultural event. The special aspect about it is the direct interaction between the artist and audience. From September 13 to 16, the northern community will be filled with concerts, parades, Batukada drum groups, workshops and competitions. Mayor Juan Acosta explained, “This new project was created to celebrate the artistic talents in our midst and of all ages, especially those who sing or make music, but also those who write, photograph or recite poems.” Groups like Compañía Pieles, Naturally Gospel, L’Rolling Clarinet Band, Barrios Orquestados, Yeray Rodríguez, 101 Brass Band and Bloko del Valle are on the programme of the Suma festival. Lanzarote water taxis Los Lobos islet off Fuerteventura is a desertisland attraction which can only be reached by the general public by water. The number of visitors is supposedly limited - only 200 people are allowed to be on the island at any one time. However, according to the coastal authorities, up to 1,300 visitors are on the site on some days. They emphasise that there is no control over the activities, that the visitors are not safe and that in the event of an accident the responsible municipality La Oliva is. As a result, the local authorities asked their police department to investigate the legality of the current activities. The operators of the nine water taxis, which transport up to twelve people at a time from Fuerteventura to the small island off the coast, are

defending themselves. They claim to be professional and experienced and underline that they have been operating for years without acci-
dents or other complaints. "Only last year we sat around a table and set clear standards to ensure the safety of passengers mooring in our water
taxis in the small port. If these directives are now insufficient, it’s not our fault. Because of our professionalism, and for our guests and our commit-
ment to good tourist service, we are the first people interested in ending this controversial discussion," said Alien Alonso Gil, spokesman for the water taxi drivers. The taxi drivers are defending themselves from being blamed for the controversy. They emphasise that they have all the official permits necessary to carry out their activities and also to fulfil all conditions for the needs of the visitors to the Natural Park on this small island. In addition, they all have the necessary certificates, permits and insurance that a sea captain would have to present. They rejected the proposal to moor at the outer pier for safety reasons. This structure is considered far too old and under-maintained. Nevertheless, they are not only rejecting the criticism, but they are seeking constructive solutions that are fair to
all. One point of contention, for example, is that the bathing area is not clearly separated from the area in which the boats pass. The taxi drivers' proposal is a concrete separation of both areas, as is already being done at Playa de Waikiki in Corralejo. They also proposed a coordinator ashore to control the number of visitors and operations. In the medium term, the water taxi operators agreed to invest in a floating dock in front of the outer quay as a possible entry and exit option assuming their administrative input is to be reduced. The proposals put forward by the water taxi experts demonstrate the willingness to talk that exists in order to find a solution that is acceptable to all and which, moreover, does not jeopardise the 56 jobs that are currently attached n to the activities.

Satisfied passengers in Las Palmas The Guaguas Municipales public bus transport company in Gran Canaria's capital Las Palmas seems to be very popular with its users. The service carries around 34.7 million passengers annually and each year a selection of them is asked for their opinions and suggestions for improvement. Last May, 2,481 passengers aged 14 and over completed the survey. The result was encouragingly positive as they gave the
company 7.94 out of a possible ten points. The highest rating was given for the app called Guaguas LPA, with a score of 8.38, and for the friendliness of the bus drivers, with 8.21 points. In third place with a grade of 8.17 was the proximity and good accessibility of the stops. Five out of a total of 17 queried attributes were considered to have improved compared to the previous year. These include information available via the app, the cleanli-
ness of buses, coordination of transfer lines, the temperature on the buses and fares. The number of younger passengers between the ages of 14 and 18 years old was striking this year, increasing by almost three percentage points and now standing at almost eleven per cent. Most bus users take eight to 14 trips per week and the majority of trips are undertaken by young people who have completed n upper school.

Night harvest success
Silver Medal for La Grieta Months category. At the trade fair, which was held in Trabanca in the Spanish province of Salamanca, over 500 wines from Spain and Portugal were submitted to the expert jury. Undoubtedly, it was Bodega La Grieta’s long agricultural tradition and enthusiastic general overhaul a decade or so ago which brought them to the tasters’ attention. The estate covers 15 hectares of vineyards, most at an altitude of over 500 metres above sea level. The vineyards have an ungrafted rootstock made up of the old European vines that
have adapted perfectly to the climate of Lanzarote. Most of them are 100 years old, yields are low and the ripening time is long, but the results are spectacular. The harvest usually begins at the end of July and lasts until October. The unique and special quality of the wines is due to a combination of the local microclimate, special grape varieties and the volcanic soil. The grapes are carefully transported to the winery in small boxes of 20 kilograms each, where they are manun ally selected again.

Preparation: 1. To begin, lay out the chicken breasts, add basil and chilli oil, salt, lemon, oregano and paprika. 2. Cut the avocado into cubes, fill the breasts and make them into long rolls. Sear them in a pan covered with garlic. 3. Finish in the oven. Cut into slices, adjust salt to taste and serve with crunchy pieces of cured cheese. Back to day to day. Love n life.

Over two tons of food was donated
The Marcha Atlética in honour of the Canarian patron saint, Virgen de Candelaria, on August 15 is a tradition on this feast day. This year the race began in the Parque La Granja in Santa Cruz and took the athletes to the Basilica in Candelaria, the home of the ‘Black Madonna’.
This run, in her honour, has no competitive character, but is undertaken in the name of solidarity - instead of a registration fee, a kilogram of nonperishable food was required. In this way, more than two tons of food donations were collected this year from around a thousand athletes. Apparently many were prepared to give a little more. The donation was recently handed to Father José Ramón Enjanio of the Dominican Monastery. In cooperation with the local Catholic Cáritas organisation, the food has now been distributed to individuals and families in need in the n community.

Top cuisine conference Culinaria Tenerife 2018 will be held in Adeje between September 25 and 27, uniting some of the Islands’ top chefs with invited international guests for an exciting three-day gastronomic event. Now in its second year, it will take place at the Costa Adeje Tourist Development Centre (CDTCA), and will host 40 talks and workshops covering a wide variety of aspects of cooking, cocktails and dining room service. The intense programme will have emblematic Canary Islands’ products as its main theme, and will include traditional techniques such as fermenting, smoking, germane meat cuts and aging, and tuna filleting. Each event will provide the professionals in attendance with an updated source of knowledge as well as the opportunity to share experiences. Highlights include ‘Coffee in the Indigenous kitchen’, by
Marcos Tavío, Abraham Ortega and David Brandao. Various speakers will also provide a bold vision of the times on a variety of subjects, including presentations by prominent representatives of the Basque Culinary Center and the Mugaritz Restaurant. Further talks will include ones given by many more chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants, including Erlantz Gorostiza (MB, two stars), Susi Díaz (La Finca, Elche, Alicante, one star), Oliver Peña (Enigma restaurant, Barcelona, by Albert Adriá, one star), Javier Aguiar (Tickets, Pakta and Hoja Santa restaurants, Barcelona, all with one star), and Juan Carlos and Jonathan Padrón (El Rincón de Juan Carlos, Los Gigantes, one star). rium, will begin on the same day, with Andrea Bernardi and Fernanda Fuentes from NUB (which is located in La Laguna and has one Michelin star), who will focus their presentation on fermented fish. Follow-
ing this, Miguel Navarro from La Gomera will detail his experience as head chef at the Es Fum restaurant in Mallorca, which also carries a Michelin star, in a presentation entitled "Cooking around the Islands".
Workshops will include ‘Chicken: tips and culinary versatility’ by Alejandro Bello and Samuel Hernández, ‘Pasta and rice, face to face’ by Simone Milico and Pau Bermejo, and ‘Atlantic Cuisine’ with Jorge Peñate,

K9 Wonderful Whitney Whitney was abandoned at the refuge overnight and is looking for a new home. She is a female pointer who is approximately nine years old and is very friendly and affectionate. She was a little overwhelmed by the other dogs at the refuge but is very good with people. She loves to go for walks whenever she can and wags her tail nonstop. Unfortunately, she has been diagnosed with mild heartworm but will receive full treatment while in our care. Ideally, after she has received this treatment, it’s better for her to recover in a warm and quiet home. Apart from this, she is perfectly healthy and would love a home where she can live out the rest of her days peacefully. Ways you can help If you wish to support the K9 animal refuge and contribute towards the safe rescue and adoption of abandoned dogs and cats of Tenerife, we would be very appreciative. With the weather warming up it’s extra important to take care of your dog, as a single bite from an infected mosquito can give them heartworm, which will lead to a very slow and painful death. We can never stress enough the importance of treating your dog monthly with special drops to their neck or with a tablet or a yearly injection to prevent this occurrence. Over 60 per cent of the dogs that arrive at the refuge test positive for heartworm. This means a very costly and uncomfortable treatment for the dog but one of utmost importance to prevent pain and suffering to the dogs in our care. Also, please remember to ensure your dogs aren’t left unsupervised in cars, even for a short time, as the temperature can rise extremely quickly, causing unnecessary stress, illness, and even death. We advise walking your dogs early in the morning and later on in the evenings to avoid the heat of the day and the high temperature of the pavements that can burn your pet’s paws.
In addition, please ensure they have plenty of access to shade and cool water. We would also like to remind you all that it’s obligatory to have your dog micro-chipped and registered at your local town hall. It is always much harder to contact the owner of a dog if it arrives at our refuge without a chip and it can cause your dog a lot of unnecessary stress. With more than 230 gorgeous dogs looking for new loving homes, please do come and visit us to see if maybe one is for you. If you are thinking of getting a dog please adopt, don’t buy. We don’t charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a full clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, microchipped, heartworm and flea free, has a passport and is sterilised, the last one being compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife. How you can help We are often asked how people can help. We need many things for the animals and refuge, such as products for our clinic and cleaning products and utensils, building materials, dog toys, leads, etc., tinned food for our elderly dogs, puppy milk, and dog jackets for when our dogs are flown to Germany, as well as materials to help with our educational programme (pens, paper, glue, play-doh and crayons). Every donation is greatly appreciated. In addition, we are desperately looking for people who are travelling to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Berlin or Frankfurt who would be prepared to escort a dog. Back to the wild! Animal print has returned to fashion - well, it never really lost popularity at all, but leopards and tigers have both had a reduced presence for some time. It's different now, from dresses to sweaters and coats to accessories, the jungle animals are on their way back! national hiking and mountain festival. A total of 18 guided walks of various levels of difficulty from the most demanding to routes for the whole family are on offer. The starting point will be the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de La Palma. The festival is aimed at local hikers as well as visitors who come especially for this event. In addition to the beauty of nature, the tours offered are oriented towards elements such as the protection of monuments and ethnological curiosities. The Island Councillor for Sports Ascensión Rodríguez explained "We want all hikers to have the opportunity to enjoy the island, whether they are
untrained or experienced hikers or want to go walking with the whole family. There’s nothing quite like swimming below the massive rock faces of Los Gigantes to make you feel tiny. On October 28, the popular competition, Travesia a Nado Murallas del Infierno, will take place. This is the third time the event has been held and three categories are offered. The ultimate discipline for experienced open-water swimmers covers 12 kilometres, from Punta de Teno in the northwest to Playa de Los Guíos in Los Gigantes. If this challenge is too great for you, you can register for the 6.5-kilometre distance which begins in the bay of Masca, also with the finish at the Los Gigantes’ beach. What is special about this course is that the participants can gain points for the Canarian open-sea swimming championship, Copa Canarias Aguas Abiertas. The last category covers only one and a half kilometres with both the start and finish at Playa de los Guíos. Young swimmers aged 14 years and over can take part in this shorter competition, provided they can provide proof of their parents’ approval. The minimum age for the other two distances is 18. CD Tenerife 2:2 Deportivo de La Coruña After two away draws in their first two matches of the season the blanquiazules made a welcome return to the Heliodoro Stadium after the summer break. The new pitch looked to be in a first-rate condition as the faithful took their places once again on the terraces and renewed old acquaintances. Season ticket sales surpassed the 10,000 barrier in the week and the attendance for the first home game was a respectable 12,139 despite live TV and the fact that many fans were still away on

counter-attacked and scored what they thought was the winning goal through Borja Valle at 91 minutes. A wave of disbelief swept across the stadium as the visitors hardly deserved a victory. But there is something about this Tenerife side (unbeaten now since April) that lifted them to create one last assault on goal. A long out-swinging free-
kick by new boy Naranjo was met at the far post by Jorge Saenz and all he had to do was nod the ball into the goal to equalise with the last kick(or header) of the match. The referee blew for full time straight afterwards and in a way it felt like a win for Tenerife. Perhaps the 2-2 draw was a fair reflection on overall play. Tenerife certainly showed that they can match the big boys in the second division this season and that was just as important as the result. The matches don’t get much easier for CD Tenerife. On September 8 at 5pm at 5pm they face a very tough match away to Malaga, another ex-La Liga team. Then on September 12 (kick off 9pm) they face Cádiz in a one game Spanish Cup tie before three days later returning to league duties with a home clash against Reus on n September 15 at 5pm.

Women‘s world championship From September 22 to 30, the Women’s World Basketball Championship will be held in Tenerife at the Quico Cabrera Stadium in Santa Cruz. Councillor for Sports, Verónica Meseguer, explained “We are making good progress with the preparations and after the baskets, the latest generation of video display panels will be installed so that every spectator has a good view of the scores at all times”. A small tournament, which will take place on September 15 between the teams from Spain, Japan, Australia and China, will act as a dress rehearsal. The group matches will be held in Santa Cruz during the World Cup. The stadium has a capacity for around 4,500 spectators. The remaining group matches and the final will take place at the Pabellón Insular Santiago Martín in La Laguna which can accommodate 5,100 spectators.
