he question as to whether CB Canarias would be able to take up their place in the top basketball league in Europe, was always in the balance.
Their most pressing need was to raise €4.5 million for the admission fee and bond required by the ACB. Hopes were dashed when the Canarian government refused to put in writing the amounts the club would be due to receive in the coming four years. Without that, the written promises by La Laguna council and the Cabildo were not considered sufficient for the bank loan and it seems that a last ditch attempt to take out an expensive insurance policy to cover possible payment default also failed. CB Canarias sadly admitted defeat. A merger between CB Canarias and Tenerife Baloncesto should have gone through over a year ago and fans are critical of the Cabildo for not forcing Tenerife to comply with the merger conditions. Had the merger happened Canarias would not have had to fork out the admission fee to the ACB but could have used the one deposited by Tenerife years ago. The loss means that teams of the ilk of Madrid and Barcelona, and their substantial fan base, will not be visiting the island in the near future. Another opportunity lost, for the players, the club, the fans and the Islands.

he British Consulate in the Canaries has announced major operational changes, effective of 1 July under the banner of A New Direction. In a press statement, the Consulate affirmed, “we seek to improve the way in which we serve both British residents and tourists and recognise the need to adapt to meet the challenges of the current economic and social climate. The focus of Consular work in the future will be on providing additional support to victims and preventing the consular cases of the future. We need to allow Consular staff to dedicate more time to victim support, emergency assistance cases, and outreach work. “To this end, we will be moving all non emergency and non-time sensitive work to our Consulates in Las Palmas and Santa Cruz and delivering these services to the public on specific days only. Our current surgeries on Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the south of Tenerife will be replaced with regular outreach visits to these areas.” Maria Leng, British Consul

for the Canaries said, “we need to adapt our opening hours for non-emergency enquiries to allow our staff the time to dedicate to those most in need. Up until now, the staff dealing with these cases
could be interrupted at various stages by customers requiring certificates or making general enquiries. The new arrangements will allow consular staff to concentrate front line resource on outreach
work, emergency assistance cases and victim support.” As a result of the changes public opening hours from 1 July will be limited to Tuesdays and Fridays, 8.30am to 1.30pm.
