Chef, Juan Carlos Padrón of Santiago del Teide, with his brother Jonathan as sous chef, has just scooped the second prize in the prestigious Chef of the Year national competition.
The brothers own and run a small family restaurant in Los Gigantes. Juan Carlos worked first with his father and then did on-the-job training in top restaurants in Toledo, Madrid and Carcassonne as well as attending numerous courses including one in the world-famous El Bulli restaurant. He won his place in the final in June of 2011, but it wasn’t held until the end of last month. Amongst the tempting dishes on his winning menu were stuffed mackerel cannelloni with a sauce made from homesmoked mackerel skins and sea bass with Iberian ham mayonnaise. Juan Carlos told us regretfully that they wouldn’t be competing any more as they’d had to close for a week to be able to do so. “I think we’ve achieved something important in being runners up in the national competition, it’s very important for us,” but now it’s time to rest a little and dedicate some more time to the business. The competition is presided over by world famous chef Martín Berasategui, but Juan Carlos has no doubt who his culinary hero is, “my father, he’s the one who showed me everything”. Their restaurant is in Pasaje de Jacaranda, off the one-way circuit in Los Gigantes and specialises in everything from the simplest of dishes to the most avant garde, using the best they can find of fresh, mainly local produce and organic vegetables. 922 868 040. Clinic chief arrested international beauty life
W
ith the rumour machine in overdrive concerning the position of the head of the International Beauty Life Clinic in Callao Salvaje,
Adeje, the company issued a press release to clarify the position, stating that the clinic will remain open. Two days after the detention and questioning of
an Italian, D. T. who has headed up the team at the clinic, staff told Island Connections that they “knew nothing” about the recent police proceedings against the individual in question, but we were told most emphatically that all the staff there “are fully qualified and are registered with all the relevant colleges”. While the staff preferred not to be named or photographed, they assured us that as far as they were concerned they would be continuing to work within their individual fields and the clinic doors would remain open. The statement issued a day later on behalf of Grupo International Beauty Life Tenerife said that the detention of the individual, “accused of four possible
crimes of falsifying documentation, ongoing fraud, practice of a profession without proper qualifications and an offence against public health, and who is out on bail, does not affect in any way the rest of the staff at the centre…who are continuing with their work with no links or connection to what has occurred”. They also said that the clinic itself “meets all legal requirements”, and will continue to offer the range of specialisations that it has carried out up to now. There has been, understandably, more than some consternation among the public, and Island Connections has received a number of emails and calls from different people with views and allegations concerning
the individual. More than one member of the public has been supportive of the man in question (“ver y professional, nice and attentive”) and the clinic services, while others have alleged misinformation and voiced suspicions. One reader told us, “this doctor treated me for months with laser treatment for varicose veins in my legs, and told me 10 treatments and they would be gone. I had 20 treatments and the veins are still there...I was not happy, so I never went back”. The head of the province’s College of Medicine, Rodrigo Martín told local press that in his time as president “this is the most serious case of its kind that I can remember”. Martín revealed to the Diario de Avisos that just a few Continued on page 2
