esidents in the normally quiet Santa Cruz neighbourhood of Vistabella are still trying to come to terms with the unbelievable tragedy that struck on Tuesday 13th of December.
C
ould Overseas Imports have picked a better time to open their new Iceland store? Probably not. Certainly as far as the first customer, Patricia Bellas from Yorkshire was concerned this was perfect.
Shortly after 4pm a woman went to the door of one of the homes to visit her niece and nephew, aged 11 and five – instead she found their bodies, covered with blankets, dead, and their mother with stomach wounds in a state of hysteria. As we go to press police are still trying to discover what happened in the previous 48 hours when it would appear the mother of the children smothered both of them. The authorities have said that the mother, aged 40 has a history of depression, and was being held under guard in the psychiatric unit of a local hospital following the macabre discovery, while her partner, who is the father of one of the two youngsters, was also recovering in hospital after it is suspected he tried to commit suicide by jumping from a balcony as police rushed to the scene. The family of the father of the older child has already said this could have been avoided and that the children should never have been left in the care of their mother, with their grandmother saying on local radio those who gave her custody of her dead grandchild should be in prison.
Patricia, along with her friends, were queuing all morning waiting for the new shop to open and was delighted to receive a bouquet of flowers from owner Bryn Robertson as the first shopper down the stairs. Bryn’s son Jesse, who was also celebrating his ninth birthday, did the ribbon cutting honours. Patricia and the many others who were in the new Iceland on the first morning, were not just there to browse. They were there to shop, and for many residents and regular Tenerife visitors, it was a bit of a party, as they recognised staff from the Las Chafiras and Los Cristianos shops. The new store, which is in the CC Paraíso Royal, below Perfumería Safari, in Playa de las Américas, is excellently designed, with diagonal aisles, wide and well lit meat and bread sections, a café, well placed freezers and, as you would expect, a superb range of the kind of produce you love from home, particularly welcome at this time of the year when its nice to add those extra special Christmas touches that only a store like Iceland can provide.
