he Arona lifeguards who have admirably continued their vigilance of southern Tenerife beaches despite many months without receiving their salaries have rightfully received a great amount of support. And, it seems, not any one of them is being forgotten. When it was suggested to Live Arico PAWS that they might be able to donate some dog food to Sebastian, lifeguard Verónica Rodríguez’s dog, not only did Sebastian receive supplies, but he was helped with necessary injections and the lifeguards themselves received donations of food which had been given by PAWS, Marjan Howard, Andrea Silver of Studio Five, Elaine Bishop Rose, Andrew Blake and Sharon Edens and a very generous and sympathetic public.

The human bones were used along with animal remains, including a giant snake skin, to decorate the “altar” and for “protection from the spirits”. The arrest came after an undercover police operation in which officers filmed several of the ceremonies, held in a remote part of Icod, and this isn’t the first instance of this kind of crime in the name of the Santería sect that is an apparent amalgamation of Roman Catholic and African practices.

The 40-year-old, who is originally from La Gomera, is accused of holding regular satanic rites to “baptise” new members of her sect by slicing their arms with a sharp instrument and spilling their blood on an altar filled with the heads of various animals, sacrificed specifically for the occasion. She is also charged with opening tombs in Santa Lastenia, a Santa Cruz cemetery, to steal human bones for use in the initiation rites, for which the new members had to pay sums of €600 - €700. Sub-
