As we go to print, the regional Minister for Health, Brígida Mendoza is in a meeting with her fellow Health Ministers from other regions and the Spanish Government’s Health Minister, Ana Mato, hoping to reject the proposals for increased prescription charges. Under the proposal, pensioners would have to pay for 10 per cent of their prescription needs, they currently have free prescriptions, and workers’ costs would increase to 50 per cent instead of the 40 per cent they pay at the moment. Those earning over €100,000 per year will pay 60 per cent. The system is already being condemned as unworkable by pharmacists. Before entering the meeting, Mendoza called the proposal, “socially unjust” and called instead for better housekeeping. “This proposal is unfair on Canarians,” she insisted, “it penalises the patients, it penalises the sick. There are other means. Methods which are already in place in the Canaries,” she affirmed, underscoring the region’s place as the top
