Visiting Bishop

he Right Reverend Doctor Geoffrey Rowell, the Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe paid a flying visit to the south of the island recently.

Given the size of his diocese, it’s difficult to see how he could spend much time in any one place as he’s Anglican Bishop for the whole of mainland Europe, Gibraltar, Morocco and the area covered by the former Russian Soviet Union. However he was kind enough to spend some time with us before going on to the business of the day, which was the confirmation of four new communicants in the chapel shared by the Anglican congregation in Los Gigantes. His main cathedral is in Gibraltar and there are secondary cathedrals in Valetta in Malta and Brussels. The diocese as it stands has existed since 1980 when two areas were amalgamated and that and another merger means that the Bishop now has three Bishop’s crooks or crosiers to choose from. The one he travels with is adorned with

gold and amethysts and engraved with the name of the first person to receive it, who donated it and the date, June 4th 1913. “It’s almost coming up to its centur y,” the Bishop remarked, light the heartedly demonstrating to me why this

crook was the one he travelled with. “Look it comes apart,” he showed me as he pulled the curved top off. I was amazed at the far flung nature of his responsibilities and remarked that he must spend a great deal mag of time in az MAR

planes, “you could say that” the Bishop smiled. He was in the UK before coming to Tenerife, the Bishop’s Lodge is in Crawley in Sussex, and was due to be in the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar almost immediately. Apart from that, destinations this year so far have included

Scotland, Malta, Nice, Venice, Costa Azahar, Chichester, Woking and Oxford. I asked if he got out as far as Russia often, “as often as I can,” he responded. Last year he celebrated Easter there, that most important event of the Christian calendar, in Saint Andrew’s Church in Moscow and then attended a Russian Or thodox overnight ser vice as a guest where he was impressed by seen another member of the congregation, Vladimir Putin. “There were a lot of other obviously very high up Russians there too, but I didn’t recognise them,” he said disarmingly. This year he will be spending Ash Wednesday in Liubliana in Slovenia, followed by visits to Trieste, Venice, Padua and Corfu, but this well travelled clergyman posed patiently beside one after another of the congregation to immortalise the moment in front of yet another camera. “It’s one thing they don’t warn you about when you become a Bishop,” he laughed, “all the photographs!” Continued on page 3

A flight from Tenerife South to Seville early on Tuesday February 25th was delayed by several hours following the death of a passenger as the aircraft was about to take off.

The man, in his early 50s, suffered a heart attack minutes after he boarded the 06.50 Ryanair flight 1961 to Seville. Despite frantic efforts to revive him by a doctor and a student nurse who were also on the flight, he died shortly afterwards.

Reporting of the tragedy has included conflicting accounts of the first aid treatment given to the dying passenger and details of alleged delays in the arrival of two ambulances. Selu Vega, who was sitting in the row immediately in front of the deceased and his wife and witnessed the scenes at close hand, has published a detailed account on the internet, including photographs, to denounce what he described as the lack of appropriate equipment on the aircraft and the unprofessional response by the crew.

However, others on board have disputed the claims and described them as sensationalist. Full details of the passenger’s version of events (in Spanish) can be found on http:// www.tremendoviaje. com/2011/02/22/muertepasajero-ryanair/
