NOMADLAND AT FILMSCENE IN THE PARK PHOTO COURTESY OF THE CITY OF IOWA CITY.

WE’RE BACK. Well, we were never really gone, always finding the path ahead by our projector light. We made pandemic pivots to virtual shows, drive-up popcorn and movie parties. We started a podcast and took the movies outside, new traditions to carry forward. And you were there with us, helping to sustain us through movieless months with your contributions, popcorn munching and words of support. Looking back, our last In Focus issue, from March 2020, is a relic of a past that wasn’t. This issue, now in your hands, holds promise for the future. Though some things are a little different, much remains the same. And even more, we’re planning for a better future with improvements to our Ped Mall space and a recommitment to mission based programming that serves a diverse and growing community. Thanks for being with us, even in the dark hours, always watching for the light ahead. We’re glad to be back, and we’re glad to welcome you back too.

Andrew Sherburne FilmScene Co-Founder Executive Director

THE BEST PLACE TO GO BACK TO THE MOVIES Our commitment to the best presentation standards, the brightest picture, and the clearest sound means that FilmScene is not only the most comfortable place to watch a film, but the best moviegoing experience. With lobby improvements, new cinema seating, and new projection equipment, FilmScene at the Ped Mall is better than ever, with a consistent commitment to the best experience across all five of our theaters.

BRINGING BACK YOUR FAVORITES Beloved series like Vino Vérité, The Picture Show and Pride at FilmScene are all coming back, in a thoughtful and intentional way. We’re also making sure that our dedication to inclusivity and accessibility, evident in our African Diaspora, Reel Representation and Open Caption screenings, are part of our reinvestment in mission-based programming.

MADE POSSIBLE BY YOU All of this is possible thanks to you, our members. Your support through annual membership and your encouragement, attendance, and cooperation every time you come to the theater ensures that we are moving forward in unison. We thrive and succeed together. This is community cinema, and we’re glad to be back.
