NEW SEATING AT OUR REMODELED FILMSCENE ON THE PED MALL

THE STARS ALIGN AT FILMSCENE Connecting through cinema — that’s what we do. Whether you crave classics under the stars, or a festive celebration of new cinema, the big screen beckons. The outdoor season is upon us. To mark a full year back at the movies, we’re going to a galaxy far far away for our kickoff screening of the FilmScene in the Park season Memorial Day weekend. We have a full slate of free movies every other Saturday in Chauncey Swan Park. And for those seeking a more eclectic—and decidedly more raunchy—outdoor experience, we’re bringing back an entire season of rooftop films with a few specialty series: Blood & Butts, Neon-Noir, and more. And to keep you cool, we’ll have a strong slate of new films and select classics in our theaters including a couple of screenings presented on 35mm film! Save the date for the Refocus Film Festival, running from October 6-9. The Refocus Film Festival is a four-day festival that celebrates the art of adaptation. Through thoughtfully curated film programming, multidisciplinary performances by local artists, and opportunities to make personal and professional connections, Refocus brings to Iowa City a vibrant, wholly unique annual festival that spotlights source material—literature, journalism, photography, stage production, music, comedy, podcasts and more—and presents its evolution of voice, perspective and medium. At Refocus, lenses shift and stories are retold. We’re happy to see regulars return and new faces join us as we continue our journey in cinema!

THE ROOFTOP SERIES

NEON

NOIR

We’re back on the rooftop with blood, butts and neon-noir! PAGE 13

After the Hays Code was lifted and the classic noir period came to a close, neo-noir was born. From those movies a slick sub genre emerged, the neon noir. Typified by its rain soaked streets lit by the glow of neon signs, these films have a particular brand of cool all their own.

What’s in a name? Well, in this case, everything. We’ve got blood and butts to burn in these rowdy and ribald rooftop selections. From road trips to sandy beaches to kung fu vengeance neo-blaxploitation thrillers, this series delivers on its promise.

A full weekend of films, festivities, conversations, and performances, inspired by the work of adaptation, transforming one art form into another. After a long wait, our inaugural festival arrives this fall.

For four weeks, FilmScene 101 will watch the films of Elaine May to celebrate her work and legacy. May, who turned 90 in April, is one of the most formidable female directors and screenwriters who brought classic American comedies like Tootsie or The Birdcage to life. In this class, we’ll watch the four films and discuss tropes, motifs, and stylistic choices that seem particular to May’s sensibility. We’ll also discuss the term “auteur,” the history behind its incorporation into film studies, and how we might understand May as one of the few working female auteurs of the 1970s.
