FILMSCREAM 2022 We’re back with another marathon of horror films. Can you handle the 12 hours of terror?
VENGEANCE Catch the films that put cult filmmaker Park Chan-wook on the map, and see his evolution as an artist. SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2022 9.5

Are you ready to fest? Or… perhaps… do you know how to fest?

Iowa City will soon have its first multi-venue, multi-day film festival in many years. Refocus Film Festival is an immersive film festival, inspired by and in conversation with other artistic disciplines. So what sets it apart from binging your Netflix queue?

Let’s start with the word festival. At the heart of Refocus is the act of communal celebration — joining in a shared love of film.

Gather on opening night to be a part of a crowd. Share a drink with a pal and discuss the film you both just saw. Dance at the Postscript party and move your body in preparation for settling into theater seats. Join us for happy hours in the evenings and coffees on weekend mornings. Meet friends intentionally, run into someone unexpectedly, strike up a conversation with a stranger.

Of course, there’s that other word: film. Yes, there will be something projected on actual film (a rare treat!) but another dozen and a half other cinematic presentations we call films too. These films have been chosen with intention, to provoke audiences, to be in conversation with each other, to deepen our understanding of art and of our world.

See one. See more than one. See many.

And then let the film sink in. Listen to a guest filmmaker describe their work during a postscreening Q&A. Take in live music in theater before a film and let it inform your viewing experience. Drop into one of our morning Epigraph conversations to hear filmmakers and authors from the Iowa City Book Festival discuss storytelling across art forms.

And find time for a meal at a downtown restaurant. Stop into a local retailer. Linger on a street corner. The festival is as much about what happens after you leave the cinema as it is when you’re in your seat.

Oh, the details? We can’t share everything right now — oh, the suspense! — but yes, on the adjoining page we answer a few questions and prep you for some important dates.

Get ready...it’s almost time to fest, Your FilmScene Refocus Film Festival team

THREE COLORS TRILOGY

This boldly cinematic trio of stories about love and loss from Krzysztof Kieślowski was a defining event of the art-house boom of the 1990s, marked by intoxicating cinematography and stirring performances by such actors as Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, Irène Jacob and Jean-Louis Trintignant. The films are named for the colors of the French flag and stand for the tenets of the French Revolution—liberty, equality, and fraternity—but that hardly begins to explain their enigmatic beauty and rich humanity.
