Relive your hap-hap-happiest holiday memories on the big screen. Yippee-ki-yay mistletoers!

NOVEMBER | DECEMBER 2021

FILMSCENE AT THE CHAUNCEY

CELEBRATING THE ART OF FILM TOGETHER. Fall is here, and it’s almost time for the holiday season. With plenty of Oscar hopefuls in our immediate rearview and plenty more to come, there’s no shortage of amazing new films to choose from. We also have some FilmScene favorites returning including the Vino Vérité series, Fargo on the rooftop, and FilmScene 101. Award-winning Colombian author Héctor Abad Faciolince will be joining us. We’ll be collaborating with the first annual Mic Check Poetry Fest and Shelter House on special events. This year marks Donna Reed’s centenary, and we’ll celebrate the Iowan actress’ legacy with some special screenings along with her daughter Mary Owen. And we have a robust lineup of holiday classics to get you in the spirit. Although going to the movies these days—like everything—is still a bit different, we’re happy to see so many friends back and to welcome new faces to celebrate the art of cinema with us. Together we will continue to be an active community partner for the vibrant arts scene in Iowa City. Let’s make some new memories at FilmScene.

EDUCATION FilmScene 101 is a multi-week seminar taught by some of the best and brightest film-focused minds in our community. Courses focus on genres, filmmakers, eras or movements and provide participants an opportunity for deeper engagement with the moving image.

NEO-NOIR Many of us are familiar with the tropes and motifs of 1940s noir: the shadows and shadowy characters, the femme fatales, the canted angles, the mysteries, and the murder. In the 1970s, neo-noir emerged as a spin-off genre with similar narratives, but formal and stylistic changes. As the ratings system adapted in the 1960s to European film’s influence on American audience’s proclivity for sex and violence, neo-noir became more explicit, riskier, and inverted traditional gendered norms. INSTRUCTOR Hannah Bonner

TUITION $15 members/ $20 non-members

Course meets for three consecutive weeks on Tuesday evenings from 7-8pm via Zoom. Registered students will be provided with Zoom details, students must be 18+. Films will be watched by registrants outside of course meetings; find film access options below.

Film. Wine. Truth. Vino Vérité presented by Bread Garden Market and Little Village is a series featuring talented new voices and established masters of vérité filmmaking in person to present their thought-provoking, chance-taking, and visually-arresting films. Each event features a wine tasting with hand-selected pairings, hors d’oeuvres, and a catered dessert reception with the filmmaker. The series title, “Vino Vérité” is a playful combination of the latin phrase “in vino veritas”—in wine there is truth—and the filmmaking term “cinema vérité,” a naturalistic approach to storytelling which seeks to observe truth through intimate, candid realism.

SUN, NOV 21, 7PM | CHAUNCEY (2020, China) Dir. Jessica Kingdon Ascension is an exploration of the pursuit of wealth and the paradox of progress in modern China, examining the “Chinese Dream” in all its complexities. Cleverly structured in three acts to reflect distinct social strata of laborers making sex dolls on a factory floor, to the selfie-conscious middle class to the jet-pack heights of the wealthy elites. Filmed with empathy, humor and a critical eye, Kingdon’s documentary continues in the great tradition of symphonic observation, from Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera to Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqtsi, while simultaneously adding a layer of humanity to the YouTube era’s “how it’s made” fascination.
