‘A year from now, how would you like your life to be and how will you get there?’ The above question is posed to women attending a new workshop which has taken its name from the Titan goddess of the dawn – Eos – reflecting the ‘new day’ feeling that participants feel once completing the programme. The Eos Programme is designed to empower participants to take control of their life whether it is to release potential, achieve a better work/life balance, build selfconfidence, eradicate self-limiting beliefs, take responsibility or explore their values and decide what really matters to them. Programme director Jenny Eaton explains: ‘It’s been specifically designed for all women. Perhaps they are re-evaluating their life after a key shift; their children may have moved on to school or higher education.

Maybe they’ve come through a divorce or a serious illness. Or, perhaps they are facing redundancy or retirement. It could simply be that they know there is more to life and want to find their way there. The Eos Programme helps women to get hold of the reins of their lives and propel themselves forward.’ The workshop consists of two days with a four week development gap between the days. However, Eos doesn’t hand you the answers or tell you how to live your life, that’s up to you. The Eos Programme is a catalyst for gaining a clearer idea of what you want from life, developing an enhanced self-image and having the confidence to achieve those things you’ve always promised yourself! Come along to a free Taster Event to find out more. It’s an opportunity to explore, leave with some new perceptions and ideas, and make up your own mind... Gardening tips for SPRING 2012 with Mike barker

Spring, means warmer days, occasional rain and nesting birds! For lawn care, feed with spring weed- andfeed and lawn sand followed by moss removal. Increase the frequency of mowing combined with lowering the height of the cutter blades. If the dry spells are prolonged, then water the lawn before it starts to suffer. Shrub pest and diseases plague plants, so tackle them early before they take hold. Now is the time to apply synthetic fertilisers. The use of slow release fertilisers is dependent on the soil type and what the plants are indicating they require. It’s about now we can fully see what has survived the harsh winter! A continual weeding and tilthing the border allows plants growth to be unchecked and keeps things tidy. Pruning should be light and avoid pruning plants that are about to come into flower as the display will be spoiled. Forsythia and Chaenomeles can be pruned now after their early spring display. Lavenders, Santolina and Heathers can be lightly

pruned but not into older wood as this prevents re-growth. Foliage shrubs such as Smoke Bush and Elder can be pruned into shape for the year ahead. Climbers such Clematis, Rose Honeysuckle and Wisteria should be tied back before the May display. Cut back Helenium (Daisy) and Solidago (Golden rod) by half to promote branching and shorter compact plants. Fix supports around using stakes, netting or pea sticks to support perennial plants and prevent them flopping over. Lift and divide bulbs, dead-head daffodils and tulips and remove old foliage after about 40 days. Plant summer bulbs such as Lilies and Cannas and Dahlias. Sown or planted Sweet Peas will now require tying in.

Enjoy the spring garden!

Nobody’s Fuel Pit lane lass and gadget guru Suzi Perry dances back into the spotlight

W

hile she failed to reach the finals of Sport Relief’s fast-footed fundraising showcase Let’s Dance, TV presenter Suzi Perry admits she still has a keen eye on the Strictly Come Dancing trophy. The former Gadget Show babe lost out to legendary athlete and I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here star Fatima Whitbread, but would like the challenge of the reality series.

“I love doing anything for Sports Relief, which is such a wonderful charity, and maybe it’s given me a taste for Strictly Come Dancing now,” Suzi revealed. ”I think I’d relish the challenge – I suppose I just have to wait for the call now. Naturally, I’ll keep practicing my rumba and cha-cha-cha while I’m waiting by the phone!” After moving to the South of France with new husband Bastien Boosten nearly three years ago, the BBC sports presenter endures a difficult commute back to the UK every week, but admits she’d never give up her new life in the French Riviera. “It’s not the easiest of routes to work,” the 41-yearold confesses, “and it’s pretty much, every Monday morning, the drive to Nice airport, the flight to London, getting settled and sorted again and back on Friday. But we have such a wonderful life in the South of France, we’re 10 minutes from the sea, there are fresh food markets on every corner, we’ve got the Alps practically on our doorstep. I think we made the right choice. Besides, Bastien has his kids here and there’s no way we could displace them like that.”

Suzi, known also for negotiating her way around the pit lane for BBC’s Moto GP coverage, is working on a different type of fuel at the moment, lending her star attraction to the Batchelors 'Fuelling Britain' campaign. The promotion provides shoppers with a chance to win free fuel for a year, and free tanks of fuel, via an on-pack promotion lasting 14 weeks from March 1st. “It only takes a tenuous link to motoring to grab my attention! I love motoring and am passionate about cars, and these are tough times when it comes to the price of keeping vehicles on the road. The petrol prices are at their highest level ever and it affects absolutely everyone. “In other aspects of our life we can cut back here and there, but the vast majority of people are running their cars out of absolute necessity – for getting to work, getting the shopping, ferrying the kids around. There’s a romantic view that everyone can catch public transport or walk, but it’s just not practical. Very few of us have the time to be able to do that. “So, in my mind, the chance to win a year’s supply of free petrol is the best prize going.” But surely there are some handy tips that Suzi can share when it comes to helping our motors go further?

“There are small things that we can all do, and they will make a small difference... things like checking your tyre pressure. If they’re under inflated, the car requires more engine power and consumes more fuel. “And certain speeds are better for your car. If you drive at smooth speeds, you won’t use up as much fuel. In contrast, if you’re accelerating and breaking constantly, you’re wasting money. Other things like air conditioning, and having the sunroof and windows open... they’re big ‘no-nos’. And the TV star admits she’s ever mindful of the price of petrol. “I never used to even notice the price of petrol and now when I fill my car up, I swear I wince when I see the receipt. The hike is just ridiculous, everyone is affected.” Although given the cheaper petrol prices in France, we wonder if Suzi’s move to mainland Europe came with an ulterior motive?!

She is best known for playing two of the nastier and conniving characters in the soap world. But Gemma Bissix is preparing for something completely different by starring in the adult comedy Funny Peculiar opposite a host of TV favourites. John Bultitude caught up with her to find out more. There is no doubt about it. Gemma Bissix may not thank you for thinking it but she cornered the market in the nasty blonde bombshells in soap…called Clare. Whether it was Nigel’s daughter in EastEnders or the conniving businesswoman Clare Devine in Hollyoaks, Gemma incensed millions of soap fans with her game playing, manipulation and general evil.

played the super-brassy Janice Battersby in Coronation Street, Hear’say band member turned Emmerdale siren Suzanne Shaw, and Steven Blakely aka PC Geoff Younger in Sunday night TV favourite Heartbeat. And it seems that Gemma loves playing the part of Shirley Smith in the show, a character with some very definite character traits. She explained: “Shirley is great. I guess she is a little bit like Barbara Windsor in the Carry On films. Bluntly, my character is a bit of a swinger. She is a bit of a hippyish type who is into free love.”

But she is leaving that all behind to star in Funny Peculiar, a revival of Mike Stott’s classic comedy, which comes to Norwich Theatre Royal on 30 April-May 5. It follows the story of small-town grocer Trevor Tinsley, played by Craig Gazey aka Coronation Street’s Graeme Proctor. Despite having a devoted wife and a new baby, he is tempted to stray with his neighbour’s wife which provokes a series of comic situations among the members of his strait-laced community. As well as Gemma and Craig, the show’s cast-list reads like a Who’s Who of prime time TV favourites with others starring in the show including Vicky Entwistle who

22  The Iceni Guide

Gemma also loves the writing of the late Northern playwright Mike Stott who penned the comedy and relished highlighting the quirks of ordinary life. She explained: “It is a very funny play and very tongue in cheek. It is also fantastic for me to play someone a bit different after playing some evil characters.”

To advertise please call 01603 816928

The rich seam of down-toearth humour in Stott’s work is loved by the cast who have been working hard to squeeze every ounce of comedy on the show really helping them bond. Gemma said: “This play is great fun to work on. It is interesting that it only seemed to start getting funnier during rehearsals. Of course, there were some very funny lines when we were reading it but we found lots more funny lines as we went along.” And Gemma has particularly bonded with Vicky Entwistle. The two have become great friends off stage and Vicky has also inspired her with her performance too. Gemma said: “Vicky is absolutely fantastic on stage. In fact, she has become a bit of an inspiration for me. I have been watching how she works and I hope I can pick things up from her.” Gemma started acting at a very young age picking up the part of Clare Bates, daughter of Albert Square favourite Nigel, in EastEnders at the age of nine. Looking back, she believes that being high-profile at a young age was actually a good thing. Gemma explained: “In some ways, I didn’t really know any different. I started at drama school and I was still doing my GCSE’s. I suppose I really just got on with it really. I did learn an awful lot and gained an awful lot from being in EastEnders though.” After leaving the show, she ended up taking a break from the public eye and taking on a wide range of different jobs both inside – and outside – the acting profession. Gemma recalled: “I did do some odd work – an episode of Doctors and things like that – but it was really hard between the ages of 18 and 21 as I was growing up into an adult. I did a few different jobs and ran a pub. I was always

going to auditions and trying for parts but nothing really came up.” That was until the role of Clare Devine/ Cunningham came along in Channel Four soap Hollyoaks. This was a role which saw her redefine evil even resorting to attempted murder in some memorably gripping scenes. Gemma said: “It was a fantastic experience and she was a fantastic character. If I had done the things she had done in real life, I would have ended up on Death Row.” She particularly menaced the popular character Max and OB, played by Matt Littler and Darren Jeffries, leading to some gripping scenes which boosted the Hollyoaks ratings. While it may have been full-on nastiness and venom on screen, it was a different story behind the scenes, as Gemma recalls. “I got on so well with the actors I worked with,” she said. And that bonding with the cast has definitely carried forward into Funny Peculiar. Gemma said: “We all get on very well and we do go out quite a bit together. We do like going out for drinks and meals.” So it definitely seems that laughs offstage lead to laughs onstage for a show promising lots of Spring smiles at Norwich Theatre Royal.

Funny Peculiar, Monday 30 April-Saturday 5 May at 7.30pm, and Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Tickets £5.50-£22. Contains some strong language and adult humour, and is not suitable for children. Discounts for Friends, Corporate Club and Groups. BOX OFFICE 01603 630000.
