ello and welcome to this edition of The Iceni Guide magazine for the villages of NR10. I have some important news to bring this month - the magazine is now bimonthly starting with the June / July edition. We have had a full year of monthly issues starting in May 2010 and The Iceni Guide has gone from strength to strength - building on the initial distribution to expand to other villages. Many thanks for your kind support of the last year!

Beauty...............................7 Gardening.......................9 Sport ................................12 Fashion.............................14 Cover feature..................16 Books................................21 Crossword........................26 Events................................28

Each village already has an excellent parish magazine and The Iceni Guide acts as a companion to them by connecting local NR10 villages together. The magazine is a business that I run from home; and I do all the creative layout, editorial, advertising and so on. Bi-monthly publishing pattern will give me more time to make it bigger and better, whilst preserving my sanity!

Gardening tips for JUNE & JULY with Mike barker

After a quick (blink and you will have missed it!) warm, dry spring its difficult to get the timings right. But generally I recommend these actions. June means watering of the garden during the continued hot spells, giving areas good soakings. It’s best to soak around the roots of plants during the evening. One good soaking is better than lightly soaking every day. Filling borders with summer bedding plants such as Marigolds, Pelargoniums, Salvia and Lobelia brings summer colour. I always use chipped bark mulch in planting beds as it aids water retention in the soil and suppresses weeds. Mulch is best applied on damp ground, but at this time the ground state is almost dry. It’s still effective in the long term. Lawn cutting should be twice a week at the lowest cut and attention to the lawn edges should be made. In dry spells raise the cut height and let the cuttings fall onto the lawn .Feeding lawns with a high Nitrogen fertiliser will encourage growth. Watering the lawns during dry spells should be considered maybe after forking the lawn surface lightly. Any lawns not regularly watered will not fair well to feeding, it may end up scorching lawns. Flowering shrubs such as the Beauty bush, Deutzia and Philladelpus should be pruned low after flowering.Rhodedendrons should be dead headed after flowering. Climbing roses should be tied back. Suckers from the roots on Hybrid roses should be grubbed out. Lilac bushes should be cut low to allow selective regrowth. Remove suckers from

Roses. Dead head flowers and clean up Christmas rose leaves. (Hellebores). All spring bulb leaves can now be cut back as it’s around 6 weeks since flower heads have faded and been removed. Dead heading flowers such Phlox also known as the “Chelsea chop” produces new growth and flowers. This is to be carried out as the flowers fade; it encourages new growth and repeat flowering. July’s summer weather brings holidays and time away! So maybe ask a friend to maintain the garden, in particular watering plants and lawn cutting. Trickle hoses along planting beds are useful in gardens as they provide moisture at soil surface level at a sustained managed rate. Lawns should be spot treated for invasive weeds such as Yarrow and Pearlwort. Feeding a lawn with a nitrogen feed will help it as it becomes tired. Roses should be deadheaded and pruned to a bud point to encourage further flowering. Feeding Roses with high potash feeds encourages strong flowering growth. Rosa “Gertrude Jekyll” is a good example. Conifer hedges and tree suckers should be cut to shape. Hollyhocks Climbing Roses and Sunflowers are at there best now. Enjoy the long summer days with good sun protection.

SPORT

WITH

T

wo years ago, in summer 2009, I took over as Presenter of the ‘Shortcut to Sport’ show on North Norfolk Radio. It was an exciting time for me. Every Saturday afternoon I would have the opportunity to indulge my passions for music and sport, combining the two to keep the listeners entertained, as well as up-to-date with everything that was happening on the local weekend sports scene. Part of the plan for the show was to keep a close eye on Norwich City games and as a life-long Canaries fan, this was something I looked forward to immensely. On the opening day of the season, I sat in the studio full of enthusiasm… and then had to report on Norwich City’s biggest-ever home defeat, a result which left them in their lowest league position for over half a century. It was not, I have to admit, the dream start to the season I was hoping for. Just days later, a gentleman called Paul Lambert became the new manager at Carrow Road and now, as both he and I approach the second anniversary of taking over our current positions, can I once again dare to look forward with enthusiasm?

Can the Premier League possibly match up to the excitement of the past nine months in the Championship? The late goals, the two demolition jobs on rivals Ipswich Town; the slow and steady climb up the table that saw my thinking change from “I think we’ll be safe” to “we might sneak into the play-offs” to “Son-of-a-gun, we’re second” and finally, unbelievably to “WE’VE DONE IT!!!” Many people have contacted me since promotion, asking “Who should we

12  The Iceni Guide

GREG POWLES

buy?”, “Who should we sell?”, “Can we possibly survive in the Prem?” and other such questions, and do you know what my honest answer is? I DON’T CARE!!

Promotion is such an incredible achievement and it’s such an incredible feeling that I’m not going to sully that by thinking about what might or might not happen in 3 months time. On our last foray into the Premier League we went 12 games without a win, spent almost all season in the bottom three, and relegated ourselves on the final day with barely a whimper. I don’t expect similar things to happen this time around, but whatever Delia and her colleagues decide to spend this Summer, it’s hard to imagine us challenging those teams at the top of the table. Once the first whistle blows on that first August Saturday, class and money will start to tell and the cream will rise to the top. But as things stand now, until the season kicks off, we are on exactly the same points and exactly the same standing as everybody else in the division, and that is something I’d like to maintain for as long as possible. So please don’t ask me to look ahead to August, just let me enjoy what happened in April. Whatever next season might hold, it’s going to be a wonderful Summer. Greg is the presenter of North Norfolk Radio's 'Shortcut to Sport' programme every Saturday 2-6pm.

And the month ends with a brand new comedy featuring the characters from TV’s Dinnerladies. If vintage tickles your fancy too, and you are planning a wedding, you must get in touch with enthusiasts ‘A MOST CURIOUS PARTY’. They launched their first ‘Most Curious Wedding Fair’ in April with 50 exhibitors at the St Andrew’s Hall in Norwich.

A MOST CURIOUS PARTY is run by Becky Hoh-Hale. She spent two years collecting vintage items for her own wedding in 2008; and she now hires them out for weddings and other events. Becky relocated to Norwich from London at the beginning of the year, and she was surprised to find there was such a big vintage scene in Norwich.

Norfolk seems to have become a bit of a hotspot for all things retro in recent years, so it’s no wonder we have a wealth of vintage-loving devotees setting up shop here.

The Rapture by Liz Jensen Book Review by Gregory Eastlawn Richard and Judy’s Book Club was established to recommend novels that readers will love. The process is rigorous in selecting the best novels for each year. In 2009 ‘The Rapture’ by Liz Jensen was selected. ‘The Rapture’ (available for £7.99 from Bloomsbury Publishing) is an engaging thriller that mirrors possible future events. Events from ‘The Rapture’ by Liz Jensen take place in the near future, during a very hot summer. The novel is narrated from the viewpoint of Gabrielle Fox, who returns to work soon after an accident has left her in a wheelchair. She is desperate to get her life back on track. Her job is to treat adolescents at a secure psychiatric hospital in a coastal town in Kent. There she is assigned Bethany Krall, a teenager who stabbed her mother and believes she has the power to predict natural disasters. Bethany is charismatic; Gabrielle is cynical. Gabrielle tries to be nurturing, but finds herself at odds dealing with the harsh realities of her life.

meets. Religion is conveyed in the form of Bethany’s preacher father, who believes that ‘the rapture’ will soon be upon them. Gabrielle finds herself at odds with both, finding it difficult to believe in either. The novel builds upon the vulnerabilities that we find in both Gabrielle and Bethany. The events are painted in a realism that could tie it with today’s news stories. It is an engaging thriller. Tension is built over the chapters as Gabrielle and Bethany venture towards a dramatic conclusion.

‘The Rapture’ is written with chilling speculation on humanity’s future. The narration draws the reader into the world of modern psychology whilst speculating on future circumstances of a world unhinged by climate change. Scientific background and reasoning are conveyed by people that Gabrielle

Beat the recession with The Iceni Guide Testimonials: advertising works I run a local, independant, family owned business. Over the years we have advertised in a variety of magazines, with varied results. Recently, we placed a quarter page advert in the ‘Iceni Guide’. In comparison to other magazines, the response to this advert has been exceptional. The Iceni Guide advertisement has brought far more new customer enquiries and orders than anticipated. We have already agreed to further advertising with the ‘Iceni Guide’ and will definately recommend advertising in this magazine to other advertisors. Gary W, business owner.

Firstly, thank you for producing an excellent publication, secondly I would like to recommend one of your contributors. Over the festive period I unfortunately had my boiler break down, I originally contacted a number of plumbers who were either unavailable or who did not bother to return my calls. When I received my recent copy of The Iceni, I found the advert for SR Heating & Gas Service and spoke with Paul, I found him to be polite, professional and willing to carry out the required work, this was completed yesterday with the minimum fuss and I am now happy to say we have heat. Adrian Abbotts, OSR Recruitment.

Thought you might like some feedback on your excellent Iceni Guide. For months, we had been talking about getting our home freshened up, but had not found a suitable painter/decorator. In Iceni Guide, we then spotted an advertisement placed by Steve Anderson, who came, quoted, and duly did a first-class job. We could not have found a better professional anywhere - nothing was too much trouble. Eric & Barbara P, Haveringland.

I can’t praise you highly enough, the advertising has worked really well. Andy Mills, APM Blinds.
