Gardening tips for Autumn with Mike barker

Its time to rake up leaves within the garden during the dry days, in particular from the lawn as the grass will spoil. Avoid being on the lawn during wet or frosty weather as it may damage the lawn. Collection and storage of fallen leaves within a compost area will produce great leaf mould compost in around 12 months. Sealed black polythene bags filled with leaves with small holes are also useful for this. At leaf fall is the best time to inspect tree branches. And plan to carry out major corrective surgery. British standards for tree works recommends for the majority of trees late winter and early spring is the best time for tree pruning. Fruit tree pruning is also to be planned in during the next few months.Aswell as choosing new specimens for the bare root season. Conifer hedges should be clipped and left for the winter. Mowing of the lawn with an increased height of the blade should continue combined with aeration and scarification to clear thatch and moss. Seeding and top dressing of the lawns should take place; we have had a few damp months so everything is green. But repairs or new lawn work is now. The last month for turfing is usually October. Autumn lawn feed is essential now to strengthen the lawn to survive the winter months. Preparation of the soil by double digging and adding organic fertiliser in preparation for shrubs and trees planting can be followed by the planting of Evergreen and Deciduous hedges. Water regularly after planting and feed these during the spring months. Keep the soil clear of weeds. Climbing Roses should be pruned, reducing and tying in the branches. Prune out the old wood. Planting of bare root trees and fruit trees during November. Also planting hedgerows stock and consideration of hedge laying mixed native hedge rows to ensure they are stock proof. When planting trees ensure the pit is large enough to accommodate the roots, and to the

depth of the growth notch on the tree. Ensure the tree is staked low to allow the tree to flex in the wind and its bark to thicken. When staking avoid entering the root area. Place the stake on the prevailing wind side to avoid the tree rubbing against the stake. The stake keeps the root fixed in place and prevents wind rock. Significant tree work and hedge reductions should be planned and carried out over the next few months. Final pruning of deciduous shrubs should be carried out in preparation for winter. Bulb planting can still take place, something to look forward to in spring. Also insulate pots left out for the winter. Dahlia bulbs should now be lifted and stored. Tidying and pruning of perennial plants such as Lavender and Aquilegias should prevent leaf mould whilst damp. This keeps the soil clean of mould and keeps the plant healthy and looking tidy. Enjoy the autumn tree colours and autumn grasses…

The second Norwich Fashion Week returned in September and The Iceni Guide went along to the launch held at the Fusion in the Forum, and the Madhatters Vintage Tea Party held at The Library Restaurant. The first NFW was held in March, and was such a great success that organisers, Jayne Raffles from Raffles Restaurants, and Anita Vadhir from independent fashion retailer Vanilla, decided to do it all again! Key to the event is celebrating and supporting independent business in Norwich and Norfolk, which we echo here at The Iceni Guide too. The publicity also builds Norwich’s tourism profile, giving a much needed boost to business in the current difficult climate. So take a peek at the gorgeous fashion on this page and we’ll keep you posted on future events!

Hospital Babylon by Imogen Edwards-Jones Book Review by Kath Bennett It’s no secret that Imogen EdwardsJones’ ‘Babylon’ books have attracted a huge cult following: they are easy to read and impossible to put down. Her latest offering, Hospital Babylon, follows the highly successful formula she has established and ticks all the right boxes. Told by a nameless narrator, it covers 24 hours in the life of a doctor in the A&E department of a busy hospital, dealing with the mundane, the extraordinary, the hilarious and the tragic. All the books are based on research and interviews with insiders, then condensed down into a single day. In Hospital Babylon, this includes two births, a number of deaths, a series of bizarre injuries and some sadly commonplace tragedies, as well as rather a lot of flirting, drug-taking and workplace banter. The pace is relentless – A&E never empties, and as the staff battle to keep waiting times to a minimum, tempers often fray and split-second decisions need to be made. Some cases move in and out quickly and smoothly, while others, like 15 year old Marsha, who doesn’t know she is pregnant until her baby starts to arrive, or elderly June, who slips in the rain and breaks her hip, are likely to stay with the reader for some time. There is a serious message here about the constraints placed on staff by reform of the NHS, and about the workload that is still expected of a junior doctor. If

nothing else, it will certainly put you off being ill around the first Wednesday in August when staff traditionally move on to new placements, and a new set of junior doctors arrive fresh-faced and more than a little confused. As with the other books in the series this is not for the faint-hearted, in places it is stomach turning. But like A&E, the doors keep opening to admit more and more people and we move relentlessly on – and I guarantee you will keep turning the pages as they do.

Kitchen Fairy Godmother provides children’s cooking parties and bespoke cooking lessons in Norwich and the surrounding areas.

“Cooking lessons that work like a charm” Kitchen Fairy Godmother cooking lessons are tailored to individual needs and take place in the comfort of customer’s own homes. Katrina says “I want my customers to be comfortable when they are learning to cook and as the lessons are bespoke, I can take into account particularly likes and dislikes so my customers get the most out of their lesson.” Lessons available include simple home cooking, fuss-free entertaining, cooking lessons for children and for grown up kids about to leave home. Lessons generally last about three hours and Katrina will agree with you in advance what recipes you will be learning and the ingredients you will need. Katrina has also been working with community groups such as Reepham Extended Learning Community and the Benjamin Foundation to provide cooking lessons for groups.

“Let the kids cook up some magic” The Kitchen Fairy Godmother children’s cooking parties are becoming more and more popular. Parents are always looking for different ideas for birthday parties and the great thing about a cooking party is that it can go ahead regardless of the weather! During the party the children will make something savoury and something sweet for their birthday meal as well as something scrumptious for their party bag. Invitations and party bags are included and the birthday girl or boy gets their own exclusive Kitchen Fairy Godmother apron.

“Help stop fussy eating” The Kitchen Fairy Godmother has just developed a tasting chart to help parents deal with fussy eaters. The “My New Foods Tasting Chart” works like a reward chart by giving positive recognition for trying new foods.

Katrina can be contacted by telephone on 01603 469380 or 07795 417896 or emailed at katrina@kitchenfairygodmother.co.uk. More information about cooking lessons, children’s parties and the new tasting chart is available on www.kitchenfairygodmother.co.uk
