Nonhlanhla Joye is an inspiring social entrepreneur and the founder of Umgibe Farming Organics. Her journey is a remarkable story of resilience, innovation, and dedication to community upliftment
With a solid foundation in formal education, Nonhlanhla’s academic background became invaluable when personal adversity struck in 2014. After being diagnosed with cancer and unable to work, she started an organic vegetable garden in her backyard to feed her family. However, when chickens destroyed her crops, she ingeniously developed a growing system using recycled plastic bags. This system protected the plants, conserved water, and allowed her to produce surplus vegetables. She shared the extra produce with her neighbors, igniting a community-wide movement.
Seeing the potential for broader impact, Nonhlanhla began teaching others her innovative farming techniques, transforming Umgibe into a platform for empowerment. Through her efforts, countless families have achieved food security and financial independence by growing and selling their own vegetables. Her work has fostered a strong sense of community and environmental stewardship by repurposing plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfills.
Nonhlanhla’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. From 2016 to 2017, her accolades include the SABF Social Innovation Development Award, the Women in Africa (WIA) Award, the SAG-SEED Award, and the Top Entrepreneur Processing Sector Award - Agriculture and Rural Development.
