Choose Water

Sugar is a carbohydrate and occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables and dairy products. Too many carbohydrates can lead to weight gain mainly due to extra calories in the diet. Sodas and other beverages are some of the main culprits of “added sugar”. There are profound health implications related to excess body fat. Being overweight increases your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Drinking water is a healthier alternative to sodas. It allows you to hydrate without the sugars. Fruits like limes and lemons can be added to enhance the flavour. Sparkling water is a great option if you miss the carbonation of sodas. Always read the labels on the water you purchase since all waters are not created equal. There is a time to indulge in the sweeter side of life. However, balance things out with a refreshing glass of water. It does a body good, pure and simple. www.bwl.bm

Ocular Innovation

New technology gives optometrists improved insights into our eyes

Eye tests have advanced significantly in recent years and with the latest technology, patients benefit not just from faster, more accurate eye screening, but also 3D scans which show optometrists a lot more detail about a patient’s overall eye health.

Embracing new ocular technology is Wannita Smith, owner of, and optometrist at, Spexx Eyecare, who explains how the latest equipment is being used to keep Bermuda’s vision healthy.

One of the newest machines she uses is the Reading XR, which looks like a virtual reality (VR) headset and is beneficial for children who may be struggling to read due to tracking issues, when the eyes are not co-ordinating well together:

“It has cameras in the front and as the student reads, it is tracking their eye movements separately so they can see what the right’s doing and what the left’s doing and then what they do together,” she explains.

This shows her how the students are reading and how she can help them: “Are they tracking left to right as they should? Are they becoming distracted? Sometimes it is just a prescription thing and then other times you’re finding that something else is going on and they could benefit from vision tracking

exercises to strengthen that back up.”

Another beneficial piece of equipment is the Olleyes. This is a visual field screener, also in a VR headset, which assesses peripheral vision: “While the patient is looking ahead, it is mapping how far wide they are able to see while continuing to look straight.”

This device, she continues, “allows a faster screening to know if we need to do what we call the gold standard, which is the Goldmann. We screen with the Olleyes first and if it finds any defects, then we’ll book in for the longer testing in the Goldmann. So, it pretty much cuts that time down in half and helps us to determine who needs further evaluation.”

The 3D OCT machine, which is used for standard health checks, has also become more advanced: “It allows us to get 3D mapping and retinal layer checks so we can see deeper than just the 2D scan,” she explains, adding: “OCT is not brand new, but the amount of information it provides as far as analysis and reports, it’s becoming a lot more technical. So, we’re getting more information out of that OCT than five years ago.”

What does this new technology mean for patients? “The equipment allows us to see things at the earliest onset so they can be referred sooner to get the best

possible treatment for the best possible result,” she answers. “If we can see a diabetic bleed at its earliest stage, it does not need to lead to sight loss.”

With the visual field screener, she adds, “seeing peripheral changes or peripheral vision decrease, if we screen that earlier, it can get to ophthalmology earlier, so they can best manage the damage caused by glaucoma.”

Smith emphasises that people need to make time to see an optometrist and their GP, routinely: “The two should be simultaneous. Your annual physical and your annual eye exam so we can optimise your better health and either prevent these long term vision loss cases that we see, or minimise the effects of these eye conditions on vision.” She also encourages healthy eating, regular exercise and sun protection for the eyes.

For anyone concerned about finances, she advises: “There are resources available. Please call.”

In the meantime, she continues to research new technology that might benefit her patients in the future: “I’m proud that in Bermuda we continue to elevate and advance and keep current in the world of eye healthcare. That equipment all helps us to provide the best service and care for our patients that we can.”

Healthy Eating Without the Hassle

If eating well feels like a chore, you’re not alone. Between work, family, and everything else life throws at us,

healthy habits can easily take a back seat. But building a better relationship with food doesn’t mean overhauling

your entire routine — it starts with small, realistic changes.

One of the best things you can do for your health is to focus on variety. Instead of cutting out entire food groups or following strict plans, aim to include different colours, textures, and ingredients in your meals. A colourful plate often means a more balanced one — and it keeps meals interesting, too.

Listen to your body. Eat when you’re hungry, slow down, and stop when you’re satisfied — not stuffed. It sounds simple, but in a world of fast-paced meals and multitasking, mindful eating is a habit that can change everything.

And give yourself some grace. Not every meal has to be perfect — sometimes “good enough” is more than enough. What matters is consistency over time, not a single “perfect” dinner.

Whether you’re cooking from scratch, heating up leftovers, or planning meals for the week ahead, think about what makes you feel nourished — not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, too. Because eating well isn’t about rules — it’s about care.

The Phoenix Stores – For a better life.

Bright Smiles, Better Health

The Latest in Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way from its early focus on simply whitening teeth or fixing chips. Today, it’s an evolving field that blends advanced technology with aesthetic artistry to not only improve your smile but also support long-term oral and even overall health.

At the heart of this shift is a growing understanding that how your teeth look and how they function are deeply connected. A beautiful smile can boost confidence and make a lasting impression — but it can also improve bite alignment, reduce jaw strain, and prevent uneven wear on teeth.

Digital Smile Design

One of the most exciting innovations is Digital Smile Design (DSD). Using sophisticated software, dentists can now create a virtual preview of your future smile before any work begins. This helps patients visualize the outcome, while dentists plan more precise and personalized treatments. It’s a game-changer for people considering veneers, implants, or full smile makeovers.

Clear Aligners: Invisible and Intelligent

Clear aligners like Invisalign continue to surge in popularity. Unlike traditional metal braces, these nearly invisible trays gently guide

teeth into better alignment — often in less time and with greater comfort. But beyond the cosmetic benefit, straightening teeth also improves oral hygiene, since crowded or crooked teeth are harder to clean and more prone to decay or gum disease.

Teeth Whitening – Now

Smarter and Safer

Teeth whitening remains one of the most in-demand treatments, but today’s formulas are more refined. Dentists are now using lower-sensitivity gels, LEDenhanced systems, and tailored protocols that reduce enamel risk while achieving brighter results. Patients can choose between in-office treatments or custom takehome kits under professional supervision.

Minimalist Veneers

Porcelain veneers have always been popular for achieving a movie-star smile, but the trend now is toward minimal-prep or no-prep veneers. These ultra-thin shells require little to no removal of natural tooth enamel, making them a more conservative and less invasive option. They’re ideal for fixing chips, gaps, or discoloration while preserving the integrity of your natural teeth.

Gummy Smile Correction

Not everyone loves a smile that shows more gum than tooth — and cosmetic

dentistry has a solution. Laser contouring or Botoxbased treatments can help rebalance a “gummy” smile, creating a more harmonious appearance without surgery.

The Wellness Connection

Beyond appearances, cosmetic dental work can support your overall wellness. Poor bite alignment, worn teeth, and missing teeth can lead to chronic headaches,

digestive issues, and even sleep disruption. Correcting these issues not only enhances your smile but also restores balance and comfort.

A Natural Look

Perhaps the biggest trend of all? Natural is in. Patients want to look like the best version of themselves — not like they’ve had “work done.” Today’s materials and techniques allow for subtle, lifelike results that enhance your smile while maintaining your individuality

Cosmetic dentistry is no longer just about vanity — it’s about vitality. Whether you’re considering a small touch-up or a full smile transformation, the modern tools and techniques available today mean you can look good and feel even better.

Let your smile reflect the healthiest, happiest you.

4 RULES FOR A HEALTHY MOUTH

Not Just Dentists –

Designers of Your Best Smile

At Coral Dental, cutting-edge technology and all aspects of general denisity meet heartfelt care

One of the most exciting services offered by Dr. Carmen Rabain and Dr. Frances Betts is something called Digital Smile Design. Using advanced software, they can create a

preview of your future smile by taking a photo and digitally enhancing it to show the results of your treatment. “When patients see the mock-up of their new smile, some are moved to tears,” says

Dr. Rabain. “It can be a truly emotional and empowering moment.”

Both dentists bring decades of experience and passion to their work. Dr. Rabain has been practicing dentistry for 20 years, while Dr. Betts has 30 years under her belt. What unites them is a shared love for working with their hands, a deep interest in healthcare, and a commitment to making a difference in people’s lives.

“Dentistry is not just about drilling and filling,” explains Dr. Betts. “It’s about providing dental health care, relieving pain and sometimes, in the process creating something beautiful, helping people feel better, and having something to show for your work at the end of the day.”

Their dental philosophy is simple: provide excellent care, make patients feel at home, and treat everyone with the kindness and respect they would want for themselves. Coral Dental is known for its warm, friendly atmosphere where patients of all ages feel welcomed and understood. “Not everyone enjoys going to the dentist,” admits Dr. Rabain, “but we go out of our way to make people comfortable.”

Coral Dental is expanding into aesthetic and pain-relief treatments. They offer Botox for managing chronic jaw pain and migraines, it can also be used to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Other innovative services include platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) therapy, which can be used in implant dentistry for bone grafting prior to the implant placement. It can also be used to rejuvenate skin.

The team is also committed to giving back, both locally and globally. They regularly provide free dental days for patients in need and volunteer at community events. Each year, they close the practice for a week to travel to Guatemala, where they offer dental care to children in a malnutrition center. “It’s important to us that our entire team shares the same passion for giving back,” says Dr. Rabain. “And the support we receive from local businesses and our patients is incredible.”

When asked for one piece of advice, Dr. Betts says without hesitation: “See your hygienist regularly. Gum disease is a silent condition that can be linked to heart disease, diabetes, strokes and even Alzheimer’s. Prevention is key. Come for the simple stuff so you can avoid the big stuff.”

A Healthier, Longer Life for Bermuda

How CG Insurance is Bringing Blue Zones to the Island

In a world striving for healthier lifestyles and longer lives, one concept stands out for its proven success: the Blue Zones. Made famous by Dan Buettner’s bestselling book and the 2023 Netflix documentary Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, these extraordinary regions offer valuable lessons on how to live better and longer. Now, CG Insurance is taking steps to bring those same principles to Bermuda—helping to create a community where health, happiness, and longevity are not the exception, but the norm.

What Are Blue Zones?

“Blue Zones” refers to five distinct areas around the globe where people consistently live to 100 years and beyond—without the chronic diseases that plague much of the rest of the world. These areas include:

• Okinawa, Japan

• Sardinia, Italy

• Ikaria, Greece

• Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

• Loma Linda, California, USA

Despite being geographically and culturally different, the residents of these areas share common lifestyle traits: plant-based diets, strong community connections, regular physical activity, mindful living, and a clear sense of purpose, often called ikigai in Okinawa.

The Blue Zones concept isn’t about chasing youth; it’s about cultivating environments—socially, physically, and emotionally—that naturally encourage healthier choices and longer lives.

Bringing Blue Zones to Bermuda

Recognizing the alignment between Bermuda’s natural beauty, close-knit communities, and the core principles of Blue Zones, CG Insurance has embarked on an ambitious journey: to adapt these proven longevity strategies to Bermuda’s

unique culture and environment.

Jacqueline Perreault, CG’s Director of Wellness, has been a key driver of this initiative. With a background in kinesiology and extensive experience in health policy, Jacqueline has long believed that environment shapes behavior. “We want to make the healthy choice the easiest choice,” she explained. “Environmental prompts like access to fresh food, outdoor activities, and social connections drive health outcomes. Bermuda is naturally suited for this.”

CG Insurance officially introduced the Blue Zones idea to Bermuda with a high-profile event in March, hosting longevity researcher Nick Buettner— Vice-President of Product at Blue Zones and brother of Dan Buettner. The event featured a compelling keynote and panel discussion on how Bermuda could be the first Blue Zone island in the Atlantic.

The Building Blocks of a Bermuda Blue Zone

CG’s approach is comprehensive, addressing multiple pillars that underpin Blue Zone success:

1. Food Security and Fresh Produce

One major focus is encouraging the growth and consumption of local, healthy food.

Bermuda currently imports the vast majority of its food, with only about 3% produced locally. CG plans to partner with local farms such as AgraLiving to reverse this trend.

“We’re sponsoring farming and gardening initiatives to teach people how to grow food and make healthier choices,” Jacqueline said. “More locally grown food means fresher meals, better nutrition, and reduced environmental impact.”

By promoting a return to Bermuda’s

agricultural roots, CG hopes to make fresh, local produce accessible and affordable, decreasing reliance on processed imports.

2. Fitness and Natural Movement

Unlike gym-based regimens, Blue Zones residents incorporate natural movement into their daily lives—gardening, walking, biking. Bermuda’s scenic Railway Trail, public parks, and expanding pickleball scene offer ideal opportunities to replicate this active lifestyle.

Pickleball, in particular, has exploded in popularity. With more than 30 new courts being developed and tournaments popping up across the island, CG is encouraging participation for people of all ages. It’s fun, accessible, and social— ticking several Blue Zone boxes at once.

Blue zones encourage longer lives
Friends Gardening in Okinawa

Through CG’s Zest Wellness program, employees and community members are offered perks and discounts on fitness classes, stand-up paddleboarding, run clubs, and more.

3. Mindfulness and Purpose

A core Blue Zone finding is that people with a strong sense of purpose live up to seven years longer than those without.

To foster this, CG is weaving mindfulness programs into their wellness initiatives, encouraging individuals to find and nurture their personal passions. From stress management workshops to

financial wellbeing sessions, CG’s holistic strategy goes far beyond physical health. They are also sponsoring the Blue Zone Advocate Course through the University of Arizona, helping to build a community of trained advocates who understand and promote these principles island-wide.

4.

Social Connection and

Community Belonging to a community and maintaining close social ties is crucial to longevity.

CG is facilitating stronger community bonds by supporting local events, volunteer programs, and workplace wellness initiatives. They work with corporate clients small and large clients, in international and local business to help them incorporate Blue Zone-style wellness programs for their employees.

In Bermuda, where community spirit runs deep, CG sees an opportunity to supercharge this natural strength to combat rising issues like stress, loneliness, and lifestyle-related illnesses.

Community Engagement and Next Steps

The March event, hosted at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), brought together key players from across sectors:

• David Kendell, Bermuda’s Director of Health

• Patrina O’Connor-Paynter, Managing Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters

• Chris Faria, AgraLiving Institute

• Preston James, Nutrition & Life Coach

• Jennifer Wild, EVP and CAO of Clarien Bank

Together, they discussed how to tackle Bermuda’s biggest health challenges:

LIFESTYLE

rising diabetes, heart disease, mental health issues, and food insecurity.

Following the event, CG shared that it is working with the Blue Zones team to incorporate key principles into its corporate wellness programmes under its medical plan, and is exploring plans for a broader community assessment in the future — one that would involve key stakeholders to help shape healthier environments across areas like policy, education, food systems, urban planning, and the workplace.

Why Bermuda?

Bermuda is naturally positioned to succeed. The island’s compact geography, outdoor-friendly climate, community culture, and spirit of innovation make it a prime candidate for becoming the first Blue Zone island in the Atlantic.

“We already have 51 centenarians in Bermuda,” Jacqueline noted. “With focused effort, we can increase that number and improve the quality of life for everyone.”

By encouraging farm-to-table initiatives, outdoor activity, stronger social networks, and purpose-driven living, Bermuda can lead the world by example.

A Salute to CG Insurance

CG Insurance deserves high praise for taking the bold step of introducing the Blue Zones initiative to Bermuda. Their vision is not just about corporate wellness—it’s about community transformation.

Through investments in farming education, corporate wellness programs, sponsorship of sporting events, and policy advocacy, CG is showing genuine leadership in creating a healthier Bermuda.

Their commitment to making healthy living accessible—rather than a luxury— sets a powerful example for other organizations to follow. As CG’s CEO, Naz Farrow, said, “A Blue Zone designation would not only enhance individual wellbeing but also contribute to economic vitality and reduce healthcare costs.”

By putting people first, CG Insurance is planting the seeds for a future where Bermudians not only live longer but thrive—socially, physically, and emotionally.

The road to Bermuda becoming a Blue Zone is just beginning, but with CG Insurance leading the way, the future is bright—and very green.
