If you’ve visited IBB Design Fine Furnishings lately, you probably noticed construction going on behind the store. Well, I have exciting news to share. We are expanding by 45,000-square-feet! That will make our award-winning fine furnishings store and design center almost twice its original size. We expect to complete the new warehouse in the late summer of 2019 and the new retail floor space by the fall of 2019. We have lots in store for you and even more resources, all under one roof.

One of my favorite days of the year is around the corner with our third annual IBB Day of Design on Saturday, March 2, 2019. The event is always a huge hit! Guests will learn tricks of the trade from our team of talented designers, as well as our loyal vendor partners. Our designers will present throughout the day, and a range of our furniture, accessory and textile vendors will feature highlights from their lines.

It wouldn’t be an IBB Design event without sips and bites and our signature swag bag. Be sure to mark your calendars to join us.

It’s time to grab a cup of hot cocoa and get cozy, my friends! I may be biased, but I think the 2018/2019 winter issue of IBB at Home is our best yet! When I first started our magazine back in 2013, I never dreamed it would grow into what it is today. To say I’m proud of #teamIBB is an understatement. Our winter issue is 84 pages of design eye candy and tips that will inspire you for your own home.

Our cover story gives you a look into the stunning vignettes that our designers created for our Meet the Designers Open House. With a range of aesthetic styles and color palettes, there is definitely something for everyone.

All shades of green are trending in the design world, and we’re showing how you can incorporate Malachite green into your home. Our Visual Merchandiser, Meghan Sebren, gives some fabulous ideas for alternatives to use as a coffee table, and Designer Gwynn Guy offers inspiration to jump start your design projects in 2019. Jory Gattis Dickinson gives insight on how you can have custom-designed furnishings and a unique design in your home. malachite Green was definitely a standout color at the fall High Point Market. From rich hues like malachite and emerald to chartreuse and mint, we’re seeing a variety of shades of this classic color in fashion as well as interiors.

Green can give a space life and works nicely combined with a variety of other colors. We love malachite paired with cobalt or peacock blue. Here are a few of our favorite ways to bring malachite into your home’s design.

TIP: Always sample the paint in your space before diving in and painting the entire room. Just because it looks fabulous in your friend’s home, doesn’t mean it will look equally as stunning in yours. There are many factors which influence how paint looks in a space.

There is a fifth wall that most people forget about and can actually end up being the most important wall – the ceiling.

Applying wallpaper to a ceiling can be a great way to pull a room together without creating conflict or taking anything away from the design. My favorite designs are the ones that are unexpected, and wallpapering a ceiling is just that.

Gone are the days of the dreaded dull wallpaper that felt like an unfortunate mandatory element of many homes from the 80’s. I’m here to let you know that wallpaper has come a long way. You should definitely circle back to the idea of wallpaper and rethink using it in your home.

Wallpaper doesn’t have to have a crazy bold pattern or color to make an impact.

It can be a great way to introduce texture to a room and add a cozy layer to your design. I love using a beautiful grass cloth to make a room feel warm and inviting. There are some insanely gorgeous wallpapers out there that are perfect for any design project, from game rooms to master bedrooms, dining rooms to nurseries.

Think of wallpaper as a piece of art that enhances a room.

No one ever said wallpaper must be applied to all four walls of a room. Using wallpaper to create an accent wall is sometimes all you need to pull a room together. Some of the favorite wallpaper applications I have done are on the main wall in a master bedroom or on the back wall of a dining room. Even if wallpaper is only applied to one wall in a room, as long as it is the correct wall, it will without a doubt make a statement.

All design styles and all homes are unique and different, so wallpaper should be selected and applied specifically tailored to your own room and design aesthetic.

Sometimes less is more; sometimes more is more. As long as you choose the right paper and application, wallpaper is sure to be the perfect element to any design!

When designing a space, it can be fun to throw out the rules when it comes to a room’s traditional function. A study, for example, can be used primarily for work but could also be a lounging and reading sanctuary for unwinding after a long day.

THE SHAY GEYER COLLECTION I’m very excited to share a recent installation by our model home merchandising team featuring products from The Shay Geyer Collection.

My Des Fleurs fabric in the Canton colorway was used on the drapery panels as well as on two decorative pillows on the bed. I have an affinity for floral motifs and wanted one in the collection that had a painterly and more abstract feel. I absolutely love how this pattern turned out. The shades of blue on the crisp white background dress the windows so nicely around the master sitting area and draw your eye up to showcase the room’s tall ceilings. We will be introducing additional colorways in this pattern soon – so stay tuned!

Also featured in this master bedroom design is Audrey, one of the orchid arrangements from my collection with The Botanical Mix. The bright fuchsia brings a

fun pop of pink on the accent table in front of the draperies. I always love a blue and white room with a pop of pink. All of our orchids are 3D printed and even feel real to the touch. The moss is preserved and will never dry out or turn brown. They’re so lifelike that everyone does a double-take when they see them.

Create that inviting guest bedroom that says “welcome!” Have great sheets and comfy, beautiful bedding.

Collect in a basket or tray hand lotion, an awesome smelling candle, sheet spray, magazines, cozy socks and a sumptuous throw. Make a place for reading or relaxing with a comfortable chair, a table and a lamp. Complete the room with an upholstered headboard, nightstands, drapes and accessories.

You worked hard to furnish your home uniquely for your family but shopped at a big box furniture store. Big box retailers stock dozens of the exact same pieces, which precludes a distinctive design. IBB Design’s founder Beth Rafferty wanted to offer clients custom furniture available off-the-floor, and that’s exactly what our design team delivers throughout our 40,000-square-foot retail store. I’m fortunate to be one of the designers who shops markets throughout the country to buy custom-designed pieces for the store. When clients shop our stock inventory, it’s

RAISE THE ROOF Vertical lines always help in making ceilings appear higher!

Great ways to achieve this are with floor-to-ceiling length drapes and vertically framed items such as mirrors and art.

When it comes to paint, paint your walls, baseboards and ceilings the same color. You won’t be able to tell where your walls and ceiling begin. If your wall color is too dark for the ceiling – dilute the color with 50 percent white.

PERFEC TLY PLACED ART You have probably heard that you should hang your art at eye level – right? Well, at 5' tall, my eye level is a bit different than someone who is 6' tall! So, here is the "golden rule" of hanging art.

In rooms with a standard 8’ ceiling, make sure the middle of your art is 60" from the floor. Hang your art a bit higher if it’s in the hallway or entry, especially if your ceiling is high. When you are hanging art over the sofa, the bottom of the piece of the grouping should hang 8-10” above the back of the sofa. Always view your artwork in relation to the room furnishings and move it up or down to suit the surroundings.

CHOOSING A COLOR PALE T TE When thinking about a color palette for a room, consider drawing inspiration from fresh floral arrangements or a favorite piece of art. Sometimes the color combinations are unusual, but any color that exists there gives you the license to draw out and layer into your decor. Resist the temptation to select a paint color first. Even though paint can be inexpensive, start with selecting the colors for design elements that are less flexible – such as your upholstery.

Pay attention to the impact lighting has on color in the space. Spend some time in the room throughout the day, taking note of how the natural light changes.

PROPER DRAPERY LENG TH Floor-length drapery panels create a classic, tailored look. You can figure out what length your panels should be if you follow these guidelines.

1. Hang your rod approximately 1/2 to 2/3 the distance between the ceiling and the top of the window. Make sure your panel heading clears the top of your window opening and doesn’t show from the outside. Hanging panels above your window lifts the eye which makes your ceiling look higher and your space bigger.

2. Panels should just touch the floor or hang slightly above. For example, if your window opening is 72” high, the window sill is 6” from the floor, and the space above the window is 12” – your panels should be 84” long and your rod may take up 3” above that.

I’ve created so many projects this year where I’ve turned unused offices, formal living rooms and dining rooms into lounge spaces. Everyone seems to love it! With this specific space, I embraced a more moody and stylized aesthetic and have dubbed it my “Glamorous Man Cave.”

I went a little more traditional and formal on the silhouettes but made it cozier and more

inviting through the great textures on the upholstery, a beautiful anchoring rug and fun “Mad Men” inspired art and accessories. The space would be amazing for a game night with friends, a cocktail with a loved one, or even a solo evening with a good book.

GWYNN GUY gwynn@ibbdesign.com @gwynnguydesigner on Instagram My design inspirations were the beautiful watercolor silk pillows which added pops of color! They reminded me of the fabulous silk scarves of the 1960’s. I drew out the fuchsia to add to the palette that I call the "Moody Blues." The colors look rich against the black high-gloss walls. The original oil paintings are impressionistic which adds another level of color, texture and richness. Shades of blue

vases, jardinières, books and geodes complete the finishing touches in the built-in bookcases. The fabulous wood of the credenza with mirrored fronts and gold metal edging grounds the space, and the round end table ushers in more warmth with wood and veneer on top. I selected a large glass and gold coffee table with acrylic legs so the hand-knotted rug would show through.

It was a fun space to design.

PAM HOOD pam@ibbdesign.com The room’s size, shape, function, and my love for blues inspired my design. I wanted to create a comfortable, inviting living room to lounge, watch TV and entertain friends. I placed a sectional sofa on the long wall and two narrow chairs to fit in the shallow depth of the room.

I incorporated multiple shades of blue through pillows, art and chairs — and of course through the paint color!

In a room full of shutters, I wanted to display art to show it’s not limited to walls. By leaning a piece behind the sectional it added a design element.

RACHEL JOHNSTON rachel@ibbdesign.com @rjohnston on Instagram I knew I wanted to incorporate rich shades of blue and green with contrasting neutrals to make a statement in my vignette. I was immediately inspired by the amazing teal blue velvet fabric that I selected for the drapes. I love the way that different shades of blue bring natural color into a space, and in this case, keep the rich velvet feeling more organic and less overpowering.

KAY LEWIS kay@ibbdesign.com @mkaylewis on Instagram My goal was to design a space with a transitional feel through soft feminine blue and balance it with a more masculine tuxedo-style black leather sofa. The colors vary greatly in their hue but blend and mesh beautifully together. The glass and platinum metal end tables work hand-in-hand with the large multilevel wood cocktail table. I layered in some pillows and a fantastic rug with soothing art. It’s a room that invites you to come in and relax at the end of a hard day.

Having one-of-a kind original art mingled with some reproductions allows for a great blend of styles. Mixing modern and classic with lots of natural greenery creates a warm and inviting space. I designed it to feel like a luxurious flat that is perfect for entertaining but is also a relaxing space full of personality and personal touches.

I love the masculine feel, heavy in texture with a mix of materials – wood, metal, chenille and velvet. I personally enjoy creating a collage or gallery wall for art. I used a wool runner on the wall as a foundation on which to add a variety of art. I wanted my vignettes to feel at home in the West but also have a global, even tribal feel.

FAMILY ROOM

Wood beams highlight the tall vaulted ceilings and open kitchen, dining and family room concept. Crisp white walls provide a clean backdrop allowing the contrast of neutral colors, pattern and texture to take center stage. The sitting area is comprised of a large sofa, four wood-framed chairs and a large upholstered ottoman. Gray and black leopard fabric was sourced to upholster the chairs and bring pattern into the space.

KITCHEN & DINING Platinum gray was used for the kitchen cabinetry and works so beautifully with the large format gray tile floors. White quartz was selected for the island where the waterfall design helps define the counter-to-bar height transition.

We brought in a modern vibe through a dining table with an acrylic base and reclaimed wood top. The retractable windows help extend the open floor plan to the outdoors. We framed the windows in white linen drapery which adds softness to the large wall.

FORMAL DINING

We highlighted the groin vault ceiling by painting it a metallic charcoal gray and carried that same color onto the walls of the dining room and barrel ceiling. A taupe-toned wood dining table with modern lines was chosen for the room. Gray wingback chairs head the table and white side chairs with a chrome handle contrast the metallic charcoal gray walls.

The study is often regarded as a favorite space in a home. This spacious room was designed with a wall of built-in bookshelves and a gray cast stone fireplace. Wide planked engineered wood floors were the perfect selection for our design aesthetic and add warmth and texture to the room. A writing desk and a pair of wingback chairs offer an ideal setup for working from home.

MASTER BEDROOM & BATH

The master bedroom features a serene and cozy design. A light platinum grey paint envelops the room and balances out the darker, engineered wood floors. White patterned sheer drapery provide an airy and dreamy quality to the bedroom. A mirrored cabinet adds storage and helps bounce light around the room. The wood and metal king-size bed is a stylish statement.

The master bathroom flooring is another fan favorite. The chevron pattern leads your eye to a glimpse of the amazing custom walk-in closet.

All of the secondary bedrooms are very spacious. In one of the bedrooms, we created drama with the headboard to show off the room’s tall ceilings.

We positioned a desk at the end of the bed to give the room a workspace or to provide a lady’s vanity for hair and makeup.

KIDS’ ROOMS In the teen girl’s room, we had the bed wall painted in a bold design to create a focal point in the room. To personalize the room, dance photography and accessories were used to express the girl’s love for ballet.

In the teen boy’s room, neutral colors and very little pattern help convey a sophisticated and masculine vibe. The boy’s name is spelled out in metal letters on the bed wall to personalize the bedroom.

MEDIA ROOM

In the media room, we went with a modern lounge design. A black leather sofa with chrome legs anchors the back of the room. Club chairs in a cozy woven fabric were paired with ottomans for additional seating. Pattern was brought in through artwork and decorative pillows.

GAME ROOM The upstairs game room is definitely a fun hangout! The large room even features a kitchenette – perfect for popping popcorn and making snacks for game night.

We designed the room with a large sitting area and a pool table. Horizontal stripes were painted around the room to tie the spaces together.

PUMPKIN PIe baked brie INGREDIENTS • 1 pie crust • 1 large wheel of brie cheese • ½ cup brown sugar • ¼ cup pumpkin pie mix • Honeycrisp apples

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees 2. Roll out pie crust 3. Place brie in the middle of the crust 4. Top brie with pumpkin pie mix and then brown sugar 5. Wrap crust around brie and toppings 6. Place on parchment paper-topped baking sheet 7. Bake until golden brown, approximately 35 minutes 8. Serve with sliced Honeycrisp apples

CAPRESE BAKED BRIE

INGREDIENTS • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 4 cloves of garlic, minced • 1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes • 1 bunch fresh basil • Crackers or bread slices INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees 2. Place brie on parchmentlined baking sheet 3. Bake for 25 minutes 4. While brie is baking, sauté garlic and tomatoes in olive oil until soft 5. Remove brie from the oven and place on serving platter 6. Top with tomato garlic mixture and chopped basil 7. Serve with crackers or bread slices

With holiday parties around the corner, it’s time to think recipes! For some reason, appetizers are always a difficult decision. My default is a charcuterie board. It’s beautiful and easy. It became the “signature” item that I served and brought to events, so I decided I needed new go-to’s that were also crowd pleasers.

I created these Baked Brie recipes last fall, and they quickly became favorites: Pumpkin Pie Baked Brie and Caprese Baked Brie. They are easy to make and transport. The Pumpkin Pie Baked Brie

uses traditional pumpkin pie mix and brown sugar. The Caprese Baked Brie is a warm take on the Italian classic. Fresh garlic and grape tomatoes baked in a tender crust are amazing. Use my Gluten Free Pie Crust recipe that you can find on thelushlist.com for the Pumpkin Pie Baked Brie. It can be made early and frozen or refrigerated for 4-6 weeks. I’ll be making mine this week for the holidays. If you don’t have to be gluten free, readymade pie crusts or crescent dough are great for this as well.
