elcome to the very first newsle er of the 2022/2023 school year! It has been an exci ng seven weeks already since we opened our doors on Monday, 19th September 2022, when we welcomed our 393 students, 120 staff and 224 families back to School!

This newsle er will provide our School Community with a glimpse of what we have achieved so far this term, and we are looking forward to the same momentum and even more exci ng ac vi es throughout the next half of the term!

8th Annual IIS Art Compe on We are pleased to announce the theme for the 8th annual IIS Art Compe on, which is: ''My IIS: People, Places, Things''. All students are eligible to submit an entry into the Compe on with the winning entries featuring in our 2023 IIS Desktop Calendar. As we look forward to receiving lots of entries by the deadline (November 15th, 2022), here's a look back at some of the excellent artwork submi ed in last year's edi on of the Compe on:

Z‑Club The IIS “Z‑Club” is an arm of Zonta Interna onal.

Zonta Interna onal was founded in 1919 and is a leading global organiza on of professionals who are commi ed to the Zonta Interna onal Mission to empower women worldwide through service and advocacy.

The IIS Z‑Club is open to all Senior School students and offers a pla orm for them to promote gender equity through student leadership.

The current Z‑Club Execu ve was appointed earlier this term, and the members are as follows:

Student Council School Spirit Event: Denim Day As part of the fun ac vi es lined up for the term by the Student Council, many of our students came to School on Friday, 7th October, 2022, nicely dressed in denim ou its. This was an op onal, just‑for‑fun Student Council 'School Spirit Event' that had a huge turnout by our amazing students all the way from Pre‑School to Senior School. The next Student Council Event will be our UN World Children's Day Celebra on on Friday, the 18th November, when students come to School in their best cultural a re represen ng their home country!

Field Trips & Guest Speakers

Field Trips and guest speakers help bring our curriculum to life by exposing our students to real life experiences and giving them the opportunity to interact with experts in various fields and professions.

So far this term, Senior School Year 4 Physics students visited the IBDEC Transmission Sta on here in Ibadan to learn more about electric power transmission and distribu on.

As part of their Unit of Inquiry on outward appearances, percep ons, stereotypes and first impressions, our Grade 4 students welcomed Disability Rights Ac vist and parapalegic, Mrs. Joke Alonge, to School where she spoke to them about the impact of first impressions and misconcep ons on people and the community.

Our Grades 2 and 3 students have also been hard at work, learning about body systems and healthy lifestyles. They took this opportunity to invite our two School registered nurses ‑ Nurse Blessing and Nurse Esther ‑ to their classes as guest speakers. Our nurses held informa ve sessions with them about the impact of our ac ons on our body systems and our health; and also gave them excellent ps on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Last but not least, our KG students, who have been learning about the cultural characteris cs of humans, invited guests to come in and talk to them about their cultures and tradi ons. Mrs. Lola Alawode, the School Accountant, came in to talk to them about the Yoruba culture and brought in a lot of interes ng artefacts to share with the students.

Mrs. Neer Lalchandani gave a talk on the Indian culture and the Diwali Fes val, while Mrs. Taline Shahimi came in to speak about the Lebanese culture.

Health and Safety Week 2022 Monday Our students learned the correct handwashing techniques in School. Staff were trained on basic first aid and lifesaving techniques (Part 1!) by our School Nurses. We reviewed the Lockdown and Fire Alarm procedures in School and got ready for Fire and Lockdown Drills later in the week.

Tuesday “My body is my body, and nobody has the right to hurt me, 'cause, my body is my body for me!” In our Pre‑School and Junior School “Body Smart” assemblies, we learnt a catchy new song to help us remember that our bodies belong to “OURSELVES!” The Senior School “Body Smart” assembly was followed by male and female specific breakout sessions, where we covered a lot of ground, as we helped our students understand the importance of health and hygiene in the teenage years. Our termly Mental Health Drop In Clinic for Senior School students also ran on Tuesday.

Did you know that through our partnership with the Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health UCH/UI, our students have regular access to professional counsellors and mental health professionals? We are determined to break the s gma and normalize asking for help of all types at IIS! Our teachers were also trained on fire safety. Do you know the difference between these different types of fire ex nguishers? If not, ask an IIS teacher. We do!

Wednesday What a blast we had on Workout Wednesday! Our parents joined in the fun and showed their children that they, too, are ac ve and value exercise. The photos speak for themselves!

Health and Safety Week 2022 Thursday On Thursday, we focused on the importance of ea ng healthy foods and a balanced diet. We provided blood pressure check‑ups for our parents, and our staff a ended an informa ve “Diabetes and Hypertension Awareness” workshop, led by our knowledgeable School Nurses.

Friday On “Friendship Friday”, we focused on healthy rela onships in school and beyond. The Grade 4 students helped educate Junior School about Bullying at assembly, and we created “Acts of Kindness” displays around School to highlight all the posi ve ac ons taking place. This included a lovely “Acts of Kindness Tree” in Pre‑School where students posted what they are doing to make a difference. In Senior School, we par cipated in a novel event at IIS ‑ the Story Exchange empathy‑building model ‑ facilitated by Narra ve4, a global NGO commi ed to developing empathy in people across the world. Our students created story circles and, through a systema c process, shared stories from their lives with each other, developing a sense of belonging and community. It was a great experience for all and we look forward to hos ng more Story Exchanges at IIS.

We also hosted an informa ve Parent Webinar featuring Dermatologist Dr. Gold‑Olufadi who educated us on the importance of caring for the skin. You can follow Dr. Gold‑Olufadi on social media for more informa on: @skinandall_

And one last event!

On Monday, October 24th, we were pleased to host a Parent Webinar with Consul ng Orthodon st of Tos Dental Clinic, Dr. Orighoye Temisanren. Dr. Temisanren informed us about normal and mal‑aligned jaws and teeth, as well as the purpose and care of braces and dental hardware required for correc ng teeth placement, and more. Don't forget to visit your den st twice a year and brush your teeth twice a day!

A er School Clubs

A er being off the calendar for some me due to the COVID‑19 pandemic, mixed‑grade A er School Clubs are back again this school year! We are pleased to be offering a wide range of clubs including French, Yoruba, Mathle cs, Choir, Guitar, Drama, Board Games, Crea ve Wri ng, Sensory Play Time, Tumble Tots, Tennis, Football and Taekwondo! While these Clubs are op onal and not part of our curriculum, we know they are an important way for our students to develop their own interests, skills, passions, and social skills.

Mother Tongue/Home Languages (MTHL) Programme Our Mother‑Tongue/Home Language Programme is once again up and running here at IIS! The Friday MTHL Programme is for all of our students from Nursery to Grade 6.

The goal is to promote and encourage the learning of each child's Mother Tongue or Home language. Across Pre‑ and Junior School, our students have over 18 dis nct Mother‑ Tongue languages!

We are grateful to all the parents who have offered to lead a class in their Mother Tongue in order to accommodate all 18 languages through our MTHL Programme.

2022 IGCSE Results & Awards

We are really proud of our 2022 IIS Gradua ng Class and, on behalf of these students, we would like to announce their results once more, in case you missed them in our Term 1 Welcome Le er.

The 2022 IIS IGCSE cohort was very strong all around, with many other students achieving A*s and As in their subjects. Overall, ‑ 11 students a ained A*s in Mathema cs, ‑ 10 students a ained A*s in ICT, ‑ 8 students a ained A*s in Chemistry ‑ 8 students a ained A*s in Physics ‑ 5 students a ained A*s in Economics ‑ 5 students a ained A*s in First Language English ‑ All students who sat French achieved A*s in the subject!

In July 2022, IIS received a Bri sh Council Recogni on and Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award for our 2021 Cambridge IGCSEs in which we were named “Top in the World 2021”. We are sure that with our students' strong performances in the IGCSEs, we will con nue to be recognized globally as a high performing School.

Community Development At IIS, we are commi ed to suppor ng the development and growth of our wider community, as this gives our students a sense of responsibility and belonging. Some recent projects we have supported include: the ASIDO Founda on for mental health, the YMCA for youth development, the Nigerwives Braille Book Produc on Centre for resources for the visually impaired, Tabitha Home for orphans and vulnerable children, the Mercy of God Orphanage, scholarships for several needy students to university level, the WimBiz Ini a ve for menstrual hygiene, the Read to Lead literacy NGO and many more. We are able to fund these projects thanks to dona ons from our parent and staff community, par cularly when we exceed our fundraising targets through our Mathbuster Challenge.

One organiza on very close to our heart that we support is the Mercy of God Orphanage (MOGO). What makes MOGO extra special is that almost all of the children and young adults resident there are severely disabled (either mentally or physically) necessita ng constant care and assistance in the home.

As part of our commitment to them, we have paid their annual rent for the last four years with proceeds from our Mathbuster Challenge Community Development Fundraiser.

Mathbuster Community Development Challenge

Our 19th annual Mathbuster Challenge has commenced and all our students from Pre‑KG to Grade 6 have set their Mathbuster targets and have begun to work hard to master instant recall of number maths and build their confidence in Numeracy. In the Mathbuster Community Development Challenge, throughout the month of November, each child will seek sponsors from friends and family members to pledge any amount of money they can to encourage each child to achieve their goal. Once the child has achieved their target at the end of November, the Sponsorship money will be collected and will go towards suppor ng our IIS 2022 Mathbuster Community Development Project.

We are very excited this year to announce that the project we will be suppor ng this year through our fundraising efforts is the Greenfingers Wildlife Conserva on Ini a ve. This is a registered non‑profit charity organiza on that was founded in 2012 by Chinedu Mogbo. Greenfingers operates a wildlife sanctuary in Lekki, Lagos which currently houses over 120 animals. In addi on to protec ng endangered species, this organiza on focuses on educa ng people in the community on wildlife awareness.

Our goal is to raise N1,000,000.00 which will go a long way in suppor ng both the rescue animals at the sanctuary and the wildlife awareness outreach done by the Greenfingers. This helped all of our students learn more about the project and the importance of conserva on. It also le them excited to raise funds to help!

Birthdays at IIS If you are sending a birthday cake to School to mark your child's birthday, kindly ensure you also send disposable plates, napkins, and spoons or forks, otherwise we will not be able to distribute the cake to your child's classmates.

We urge parents who insist on sending in party packs, to kindly keep them modest.

Please be aware that taking photos of students who are not your own children is not allowed in School. This is to protect the privacy of our students. Personal photographers are NOT allowed in the School premises to take photos of your child on their birthday. Thank you for your coopera on and understanding on this ma er!
