Analysis of a Leaflet

o All of the information on the leaflet has been designed in such a manner so that it is easy to read and retains the readers' attention. The information has been well–spaced, condensed into a few lines so that there is not an over–indulgence in unnecessary details and bullet points have been used to condense the information and present it readable chunks, so that the target audience remains interested and are not forced to read a heavy text.

o It was imperative that the colour scheme of the leaflet appealed to both sexes and the large range of ages that our target audience covers. The background of the leaflet is a green, which, is a vibrant colour designed to attract the readers attention to the leaflet when it is on the stands, it is also reasonably neutral and does not appeal to one sex more than the other. The subheadings and headings have a blue font in order to contrast with the green font and add to the striking effect.

o The white outline, on which, the text is placed on makes the black of the main body of the text stand out.

o Quotes from magistrates have also been used in the middle and back sections of the leaflet. This is effective as it adds a personal touch, thus, is more appealing to the reader. Context for Usage: The grade levels this text is designed to prepare educators for teaching is evidenced first in its overall discussion of properly preparing students to be able to write on demand for state assessment tests. Given that such tests do not regularly take place until students are out of elementary education it is apparent that this text is directed towards teachers working with a higher age bracket. This is also further revealed in instances where teachers are directed to help students think backwards, a skill that is not highly promoted in elementary education as most children at this age level have not yet developed the capacity to think backwards. The process described for enabling students to analyze prompts is also one that would be dominantly used beyond the beginning years of education. Considering each of these factors, the aim of this text is to be utilized by teachers working with a middle school to high school age bracket.

Sometimes it seems like the computer game industry is dying, crushed to death by its own bulk. Every year more and more gaming companies get gobbled up into huge conglomerates like Electronic Arts, companies that mostly put out trash that is technically and visually impressive, but devoid of concept and content. However, there are some small gaming companies that buck the trend. While mostly just small groups of programmers and artists, some are huge unions of fans who, irritated with the dropping quality of computer games, have decided to use the power of the internet to get together and to produce games tailor–made to their personal preferences.

The first level removed from EA Games is the small gaming company. Moonpod Games ( http://www.moonpod.com/), a company made up of a small but skilled group of game makers who previously worked under different companies making other games (some well known, some more obscure), is a good representative of this kind of game producer.

Just because Moonpod is a small business doesn't mean it doesn't know its web design. The site is very well done and much more informative than even the EA site it has to be, since the company doesn't have the money to make separate sites every time it comes up with a new game.

The organization of the website itself is fairly basic. A centrally–located news column makes announcements about new features, patches, or game releases. A navigation bar on the left–hand side allows easy access to the different parts of the website, and beautiful, eye–catching screenshots on the right take one to a synopsis of the games from which they come (although the buttons on the left do that as well). The contents of the center and right–hand portions change when one accesses a part of the site specific to one of the games, changing to a synopsis of and system requirements for the game in the center, and screenshots and related links on the right. All in all, it is a simple but effective design.

Art Formal Analysis Examining the formal qualities of Homer Watson's painting Horse and Rider In A Landscape was quite interesting. I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because it was the piece I liked the least, therefore making me analyze it more closely and discover other aspects of the work, besides aesthetics.

The texture of the canvas works very well with the subject matter portrayed in the painting. The grassy hill side and the leaves of the trees are especially complimented by the canvas. It makes the leaves feel like they are slightly moving, this combined with the lack of detail itself the leaves. Perspective lines occur also in the background of the painting in the upper right in the trees getting smaller as they descend into the painting. This painting is an example of linear perspective. All lines converge at a vanishing point.

At first sight the house in the middle ground appears to be the destination of the rider, but the use of linear perspective suggests that something else is important beyond the house and the green hill.

This painting appears to take place either at either dusk or dawn, when the sun is at the horizon. Likely it is dusk, as the setting appears to be in the Northern Hemisphere and the snow in the picture residing on the left hand side of fence would suggest it has yet to melt, so the sun would be setting in the west, or on the right. So the viewer, as well as the subject, is facing south. This affects the painting in several ways. The lighting is very dramatic, the middle ground being very much more lighted than the foreground and background, therefore the colors are more saturated than the foreground and background. Greens, browns and greys are used a lot in this piece and makes it very muddy. The house really does stand out against the painting because of the contrast of lighting.

The piece is pretty balanced, it is more or less partitioned into four parts by the strong horizontal line in the middle and the road meeting with the edge of the forest vertically, the lighter areas in the top right and bottom left,
