The Benefits of The Internet

Thinking about the internet reminds me of something that was said in my history class. My professor was lecturing about the early colonies in America and how the men of that time had to sail up and down coasts in order to make maps. They had to actually draw these landscapes as they saw them. This process would sometimes take years to accomplish. I realized that the technology our ancestors used could today be accomplished in seconds versus years. I have access, at the touch of a button, to maps from satellites miles above the earth. I can go shopping without ever moving my legs and communicate with friends and family all over the world, which was once nearly impossible. What an advantage I have over...show more content...

Roswell is a city that I really have trouble with in this area, every building looks the same and all the roads sound the same. If it weren't for the directions that I received in Travelocity.com I would have never made it to pick up my prom dress last year. With school and work filling most of my schedule anything that saves me time is a lifesaver. Therefore I shop on theinternet as much as possible. For instance, when I was in high school, I hated having to drive to a book store to acquire my summer reading books. I once spent a whole day searching for one book at several different book stores all over town and the town next to mine; only to find out that almost every kid in my grade, and at every school in the surrounding counties was buying and looking for the same books. All of us were buying out and harassing the clerks for theses books at stores such as Barnes and Nobles, local bookstores such as Jillian's Books, and Walden Books. What a waste of time! There is so much merchandise , like my books, that can be purchased over the internet. E–Bay is also a place where everyday people buy and sell personal items and equipment. My brother, Ben, loves E–Bay because this is where he finds accessories to his 1972 master craft boat which he is re–building. E–Bay has introduced him to a whole new world of shopping. With out it he would still be searching for the limited items that he has

For the majority of people, it is difficult to imagine what life would be like without the internet. The world of education has also undergone tremendous change since the advent of the internet. It allows students to quickly obtain a vast amount of information on every subject. They also get the convenience of going to class and completing assignments, permitting them to schedule their time with great flexibility. Theinternet has become one of the easiest, fastest and most effective tools that can be used to explore and comprehend more about the world; however, it is not without problems. The uses of the internet by students changes their thinking patterns, distracts their attention and reduces their interpersonal skills. First of all,...show more content...

Thousands of websites are distracting students from studying time. In an experiment at Cornell University, students who used internet–connected laptops during a lecture did much worse on a subsequent test than students who did not use the internet (Carr, 2010). It indicated that using the internet in class impacts students' attention span (2010). Distractions can take attention away from learning. In fact, using the internet does not promote study efficiency, but wastes time. Furthermore, the internet damages students' interpersonal skills. Social media and instant messaging are major communication tools for students, which lead them to have few opportunities to talk in person. Recently, a multi–functional cell phone can replace a computer with internet access. There is a study in England that found that almost forty–percent of students surveyed said they could not live without their cell phones (Birdwell, 2007). Also, nearly ten–percent of students said that using cell phones caused them to lose their relationships and jobs (2007). Besides, through online education, students cannot get face–to–face instruction from professors and also lose their chances to communicate with classmates. In conclusion, the influence of internet hangs over the world of education and creates effects on thinking patterns, concentration and the social skills of students. Under the growing trend of the digital campus, the negative effects of the internet in education can be

My Internet Experience

When I first head about the Internet, the first thing that ran through my mind was that computers are going to take over the world. I have a very negative outlook. I thought people were never going to come out of their home, because now they are going base their whole life around the computer. My view was that computers were evil and they disconnect humans from nature. I never cared to even see for myself what everyone was talking about. I thought that it was too hyped and mainstream and of course I did not want to fall into the mainstream category. I assumed anybody spending that much time infront of a computer must be a total geek without friends. This all changed when mybest friend got a computer ...show more content...

I imagined a whole new world, being able to communicate, send pictures and letter instantly. All of a sudden I felt as if I was in a future Sci–Fi movie, clicking one word and having many many sites opening up to me. It was too good to be true. All those days spending in the library amongst books, files and research materials, were all under one click of a button. I laughed at myself because it all seemed so hard because I had feared the Internet world and now it was easy as pie.

As I continued my searching, I typed many different words. I found this site called "Yahoo", which you can practically find anything, anytime. It gave me a list of 7 categories. The word I had chosen at the time was "Faeries", and I got so many sites that again I did not know which one to pick. So I picked one and it was the most beautiful one of all. It had so many links and beautiful romantic pictures, along with poetry. I thought I was never going to leave the computer now. It is my new best friend and it always agrees with me and listens to me. I now knew what I wanted for my birthday present, a labtop. How quickly was I influenced! The more I searched the web, the more I realized it is infinite. I decided to choose the word Chakra. I got a list of sites and I chose www.astralnet.net/energylinks.htm. I chose this site because it had the word Kundalini, which is a form of a Chakra. I looked this word up because I was introduced to it by Dr.Roger

A very common question that often arises is 'When was the Internet developed or invented?" That is a good question, one that is hard to define as it has many multiple answers.

The Internet, including the World Wide Web (WWW), is perhaps one of the greatest inventions of our time. Without a doubt, it has had a profound effect on almost every aspect of our lives. The formation and implementation of the Internet has changed the way we do business, communicate, entertain, retrieve information, and even educate ourselves. Nevertheless, the Internet might have never materialized if it had not been for some innovated thinkers from the AdvancedResearch Project Agency, who created "ARPAnet."

The Internet began as a proposed plan to...show more content...

This development continued at a fast pace until an English computer scientist, Timothy Berners–Lee, for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) developed the protocols for the World Wide Web in 1989.

The Internet refers to the global information system that is logically linked together by a globally unique address space based on the Internet Protocol (IP); is able to support communications using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite; provides, uses, or makes accessible, either publicly or privately, high level services layered on the communications and related infrastructure.

Computers on the Internet may use one or all of the following Internet services:

В· Electronic mail (e–mail). Permits you to send and receive mail. Provides access to discussion groups.

В· Telnet or remote login. Permits your computer to log onto another computer and use it as if you were there.

В· FTP or File Transfer Protocol. Allows your computer to rapidly retrieve complex files intact from a remote computer and view or save them on your computer.

The Internet was first developed in 1957 as a communication resource for the military Defense Unit. Since then the Internet remains to a service of communication that is now provided to all people with the access of a computer. Over the past several years the Internet has developed and expanded into an endless resource of information and knowledge. With billions of Internet users present in the world today, the idea of living life through the computer is not as uncommon as it used to be. Today people have the opportunity to experience relationships and receive an education through the computer. The process of education involves sharing knowledge through communication to another individual/s. The means through which education is provided has changed tremendously in the past few years and continues change today. Through technology, education is viewed by the US Department of Education as "no longer confined to it's campus or shaped mainly by it's own traditions, it's academic community and faculty, it's libraries and any other source of knowledge or by any other tangible factors."(Hallak 3) Education without tangible resources is an education that is more widely available to students. When time and distance are variables that are no longer present in obtaining information student's nation wide can receive an education. For the first time students have more flexibility and options in making a choice as to where, when and how they receive their education. Conversely, some may say that education has been made easy. Students and teachers are no longer are required to travel to a classroom to meet or verbally discuss topics face to face. The communication between teachers and students has been minimized to almost nothing but reading and writing. Although reading and writing gets the job done (as far as sending information and receiving it) there is a large gap in the communication of the material as far as human expression is involved.

For example an aspect of human expression is sound. Sound is an

Since the invention and popularization of the internet, computer mediated communication has become an increasingly common mode of socialization. Many people have voiced the concern that the move away from physical communication might have negative repercussions for society; however, socialization on theinternet has a number of advantages over traditional socialization. When communicating through an instant messenger, one can send messages while conversational partners are away from their computers and the partners will still see the messages when they return. Not only do they not need to be physically present, they do not even need to be participating in the conversation at the exact same time. This makes computer mediated communication one of the easiest means of transmitting information. Physical communication is more intimidating them communicating through typing. Typing allows one more time to think and reword one's thoughts before communicating them. Further, the fact that people cannot see the physical reaction of their conversational partners makes it easier to communicate about difficult topics. This is especially helpful shy people. Shy individuals who do not use the internet for communication have less social contacts then shy people who do socialize on the internet3. Most people have some degree of shyness; communicating through the internet helps alleviate the negative effects of shyness and makes socializing more comfortable. Some would argue that the above benefits are irrelevant because online social encounters rarely result in a social relationship. Although it is true that many encounters on the internet do not lead to meaningful social relationships, the same can be said about physical social encounters. Receiving help is as easy as communicating with the other people online. This saves the hassle of arranging a meeting with a teacher or classmates. This is beneficial because an instant response can be obtained in a matter of seconds. Also, this is the most appropriate place for a correct response to any Moo related questions.

When an essay is completed in a Moo, it is out there for the world to see. In other words, anyone and everyone in the world who has access to the Internet can view it. This leaves an essay open for criticism, which can be used constructively to help the student develop his or her work. It also beneficial for the teachers. It allows the teacher to view the student's work with the click of a mouse. No longer does class have to be in session for work to be accomplished. Teachers can view an essay over the Internet, then email the student back his or her grade at any time they desire. Essays written on the Internet also free the teacher from carrying around stacks of papers.

Although Moos have many advantages, there are also certain drawbacks to creating an essay in this fashion. When writing an essay in the Moo, the Moo editor may be needed. The editor contains certain commands that are needed to get around throughout the rooms, and it may be hard to memorize them all. This can be a stressful task to learn the commands, but once they are familiar, travel throughout the Moo rooms is much easier.

We become mere signal processing units, quickly shepherding disjointed bits of information into and then out of short–term memory. Carr illustrates how the Internet is making us more superficial as thinkers. He also states how the internet is an information rich environment that the net creates for us and that's why we use it so much, he refers to words, sounds, pictures, texts and what this tends to do for us is promote a sort of compulsive behavior which we're constantly checking our smartphone, constantly glancing at our e–mail inbox, and we are living in this perpetual state of distraction and interruption which is dangerous according to Carr because that mode of thinking, crowds out the more contemplate and calmer mode of thinking, and that focused calmed thinking is actually how we learn. That is a process is named memory consolidation. That means that the process of information from our short term working memory to our long term memory and its through moving information from your working memory to your long term memory that you create connections between that information and everything else you know. Carr believes that "attention is the key, and if we loose control of our attention or are constantly dividing our attention then we don't really enjoy that consolidation process". I disagree with this quote because I believe that we can also enjoy that

Working with Internet does not mean just browsing www and sending and receiving e–mails. The Basic Structure of the Internet was developed through last 30 years of existence of the Internet. The Internet is a heterogeneous worldwide network consisting of a large number of host computers and local area networks. The Internet uses the TCP/IP suite of protocols. This allows the integration of a large number of different computers into one single network with highly efficient communication between them. This way, the user can access information on all kinds of host computers from a desktop PC, Macintosh, or whatever he/she has available. In the second group, the user turns to the Internet–service in search for some particular information. Communication services can roughly be compared to a telephone call, information services to a dictionary .The most important communication services on the Internet are electronic mail, Netnews and some derived services. Major information services are terminal emulation and file transfer, Gopher, WAIS, and World Wide Web. Electronic mail is the most popular and widely used network service. It can be viewed as the electronic equivalent to a regular mail letter. When one user wants to send a message to another Internet user, he types the message into a special computer program, adds the e–mail address of the recipient, and sends the message off through the network. Typically, the message reaches its destination almost immediately, even when it is on another continent. Practically all gateways between the Internet and other computer networks can handle e–mail messages. Therefore, many more people can be reached by e–mail than are connected to the Internet via TCP/IP. The major advantage of e–mail over regular mail is that an e–mail message comes in electronic form. Therefore, it can easily be handled and interpreted by a computer program. This feature is use by electronic discussion lists. They operate a database of subscribers and each incoming e–mail message is automatically distributed to each

There are many pitfalls and perils on the Internet. Some of them are easy to avoid while other are not so obvious. Some of the Pitfalls and perils are annoying, while others are deadly to your computer. Still others are humorous and entertaining. There are many dangers on the Internet. This paper will try to cover some of them.

The biggest dangers of the Internet are virus. Virusesare small programs that "infect" computers. Most viruses are made to "steal" and or "destroy" data stored on the infected computer. (Email Hole Exposes Computers) The seconded way to start a virus is because of a hole in Netscape's mail program and also MS's Outlook. A new way for Viruses to be spread by E–mail is to put the whole code for the virus in the subject line that way when the computer read the subject line it unwittingly activated the virus. The newest way for people to get viruses is through the web pages. This is done by putting the virus code into a script on the web page, now when the page is accessed the viruses executes the viruses code. (Virus Thrives on HTML) This can make a virus very prolific if a lot of people visit the web page.

Crackers use viruses for their destructive ways. Crackers are people who go out of their way to cause damage to other peoples systems through the use of viruses and direct hacking. Crackers are not hackers. Calling a Cracker a hacker is like comparing a red delicious apple to a golden delicious apple. Although in some cases it may be earlier and in some later, the typical age at which a child begins to learn computer skills are kindergarten age, or age five. For example at the Children Television Work Shop website, a young child can click on a query and in a few days an E–mail arrives. For the purpose of this analysis, the broad word "children" will be condensed to contain two age groups elementary level, ages' 5–12, and secondary level, ages' 13–18. At either level, the World Wide Web poses clear dangers to children. These children grow up enlightened with technology, which they take for granted and know exactly how to use it. Most parents are not conscious of what lies behind that innocuous screen. If you give one's child carte blanche use of a computer attached to a modem, it is as serious as handing a ten–year–old the car keys and telling them to have a good time. These "cyberchildren" are vulnerable to potential dangers as a result of Internet use. These perils include contact with dangerous individuals, exposure to sexually suggestive materials, exposure to explicit conversations and obscenity in chat rooms, and access to violent interactive games. One very dangerous downside to Internet communication is its potential for the telling of untruths. One can never be certain at any given time to whom one is talking or if the conversation is sincere and truthful.

It helps students become individual learners, offering a plethora of websites for students to look up and learn from on their own.

On the other hand, technology can be a detriment to students. First of all, teachers put too much emphasis on the appearance of assignments, such as the pictures and the font type and the format, rather than paying attention to the actual quality of the assignment. Students spend more time on finding pictures, typing up their work in special fonts, and focusing on the looks of their papers, rather than focusing on the important things, such as the thesis statements, organization and details the paper contains. "Students spend too much time creating high–tech presentations that don't offer significant improvements over traditional slide shows, oral presentations, index cards and all" (Bassett 75). The internet is a vast realm full of information that just about anyone can access. It gives us the ability to communicate with others around the world. With millions of different websites that offer unique things to them (Youtube, Amazon, Facebook, Wikipedia, etc.). Each one of these sites offers something the other doesn't. 'Are we witnessing the erosion of the demarcation of public and private spaces brought on by the networked economy and new technology?' Of course we are, yet we stand back and watch it fall apart. An example of this is in that of the case of Alexander Lunney. Alexander was subject to false accusations at the age of fifteen, of "transmitting obscene, abusive, threatening and sexually explicit material." It was however revealed that Lunney was not even a member of the accusing company, and that an imposter had posted the material in his name. A step further than just anticipating the erosion on a worldwide basis is to begin NOW to re–form the barriers between the public and private sectors. The safety of individuals must be assured. It is true that there are numerous privacy acts and laws that exist to prevent the threat of privacy invasion on the Net, though they aren't enough and they're not working. So it would be fair in saying that at present, not enough is being done to protect personal privacy on the Net. To even start to think about improving privacy, a realistic approach must be taken. Protective action must start with the ISP, where it should there

conceived in the early '60s. "Under the leadership of the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Project Agency, it grows from a paper architecture into a small network (ARPANET) meant to promote the sharing of super–computers amongst researchers in the United States." (Kristula, pg 68). Through the next couple years there were talks of about how this network could come into the cooperate world. In 1969 researchers at four US campuses created the first hosts of the ARPANET. They connected the Stanford Research Institute, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah. The ARPANET was a success from the very beginning. Although originally designed to allow scientists to share data and access remote computers, email quickly became the most popular application. The ARPANET became a high–speed digital post office as people use it to collaborate on research projects and discuss topics of various interests. In 1971 the ARPANET grows to 23 hosts connecting universities and government research centers around the country. In 1972, the Inter–Networking Working Group becomes

Policy Essay #2 Privacy

In today's world, Privacy and Security comes hand in hand with internet. Technology allows us free speech and freedom of information over the internet, by imposing strict laws and policies regulating the privacy and security of our information. According to Richard Clarke, free expression over the internet and its privacy are two sides of the same coin (Privacy and security(n.d.)). Writing blogs, uploading posts, comments or pictures on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, networking or sharing links on Linkedin are all considered as our free expression and its security is our right. Individual right to...show more content...

This policy is applicable only on the search engines. The individual can request the search engine companies to not show his information like blogs, news, videos, articles or websites when someone searches about him. However, the news channels, media, websites or blogs can retain the information but the search engines cannot show the information publicly on search machines. The individual can only request for putting down the links, but the decision is on the search engine company if they would accept the individual's request. In my opinion, I believe such law should be diminished. If this continues, a criminal, a doctor, a pharmacist, an engineer or a politician can remove their earlier misdeeds from the search engines. People would not be able to access their background and might take some wrong decisions. Individuals can get away from their earlier malicious deeds just due to this law of 'Right to be Forgotten' that hides such individual's information from the common people. This goes against the right to get access to information or freedom of information for common people. For example, if a doctor has some negative record about a surgery that went wrong leading to a patient's death and he removes such information from the search engine, people cannot take the right decision whether to choose the doctor. Again, people might end up voting a politician who has corruption cases against him. If there is review about a restaurant serving unhealthy food,

It can be considered as one of the most valuable types of technology. During the last several years we have come to be more and more dependent on the Internet and in particular moving huge chunks of data across large distances. The Internet allows people to communicate with each other across the world within mere fractions of seconds with the help of E–mail and Messenger. The Internet also allows for expressing opinions and obtaining up–to–date information from the world–wide–web. The new software is being developed every day which uses the Internet as the carrier for long distance voice calls and video conferencing like FaceTime and Skype, which would hold the key to the future of our society. Whether someone is sending e–mail, posting on message boards, or reading the news online, people are guaranteed the same freedom of self–expression that we enjoy offline. In other countries, the mere act of accessing websites that criticize the government is an offense that can land you in prison. Australia, similar to the United States, perceives and ensures a person's freedom of expression. Although, they have an alternate view on what is appropriate on the Internet. Australia has taken the position to confine adults privilege of the right to speak freely on the Internet, in order to avoid children for getting material that is esteemed unsuitable for minors. However, it also averts content considered "objectionable" to be uploaded on the internet, in this manner limiting the right
