Parking in our city
In October, we will be asking you about how we can better manage parking across Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt. Public consultation will be live from 3-15 October.
As our city grows our parking capacity is coming under increasing pressure, and we need to manage our existing parking capacity more efficiently. So, we’re creating a new Parking Strategy, and we’ll also be developing Parking Management Plans to tackle specific parking management issues in our city. We’d love to hear your thoughts on parking management.
Keep an eye out on our website and social media in early October to have your say!
Lower Hutt Art Trail
After a long break, Lower Hutt will be host to a Lower Hutt Art Trail in October, featuring over 50 artists from across the Hutt Valley, from Taita to Eastbourne.
The trail includes 29 stops, offering a diverse array of disciplines such as painting, pottery, printmaking, collage, textile arts, weaving, woodwork, glass art, jewellery, metalwork, and mixed media.
Visitors can view these works in both artists’ studios and various pop-up sites and galleries throughout the city.
The trail provides a chance for people to engage with artists, view their creations, and purchase or commission artwork directly from the creators, experiencing the rich artistic offerings of Lower Hutt.
In addition to the exhibitions, artworks will be displayed in shop windows around the CBD along High Street and Queen Street.
Art awaits: follow the trail!
The Lower Hutt Art Trail will be running on the weekend of 19-20 October, 10am-4pm

Explore the past with Hutt City Council
Following on from a hugely successful Family History Month in August, the Wellington Heritage Festival will run from 26 October to 17 November with over 150 events running across the region.
Family History Month was filled with talks, workshops, a research day, and lots of drop-in research help sessions in all Neighbourhood Hubs.
Two of our guest speakers, Rowan Carroll, Director of the NZ Police Museum, and Karen Arraj-Fisher of the Jackson Street Programme, were highlights from the month.
Rowan gave a fascinating talk about the NZ Police Gazettes (available online) and was also a fount of information about where to go for in-depth police staff or court records (Archives NZ being the first place to look).
Rowan solved a mystery using the Police Gazettes and other

documents to establish the (very likely) identity of a Scottish man whose remains were found in Otago years after he went missing in the 1930s. With no DNA evidence the mystery was solved using logic and tracking through records.
Karen Arraj-Fisher, of the Jackson Street programme, and long-time resident of Petone, talked about three old Jackson Street family businesses run by the Wing, Pyke and Harding families.
The oldest business is Harding’s Furniture where the present manager joined the business as a teenager.
We also featured two in-house presenters, Clark Stiles, Heritage Specialist, and Heather Scullion, Pou Tiaki Lead at War Memorial Library, who gave informative talks on Papers Past and using DNA to track your ancestors.
We had an extremely busy research day on Saturday 17 August, with our Heritage Specialists flat-out all day long, helping customers to find the answers to those tricky family history mysteries.
A workshop on the three family history library subscription databases Hutt City Libraries offer was packed with both novice and more expert genealogists wanting to find out more.
You can access all of our family history resources by visiting any our Neighbourhood Hubs.
If you need specialist help, come and talk to the Heritage and Family History Specialists at the Petone Heritage Centre in Petone Neighbourhood Hub. The Heritage Centre is open seven days a week.
Continues on next page.
At the Heritage Centre, you can access NZ birth/death/marriage microfiche indexes, microfilm of the Evening/Dom Post, street and business directories, local history and family history books.
You can also get some help with your research closer to home, with family history drop-in sessions running at Eastbourne, Naenae, Kōraunui, and Wainuiomata Neighbourhood Hubs every month.
We will also have lots more heritage events coming up with the Wellington Heritage Festival running from the end of October to the start of November.
The Heritage Festival is organised by the Wellington Heritage Festival Trust and the Rotary Clubs of Greater Wellington, and is a volunteer-led, community-sourced heritage and culture festival celebrating the region’s people, places, and stories.

Get your swimming gear ready Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai!
Our three summer pools open on Saturday 16 November with a free entry day, followed by the opening of Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness in early December.
Enjoy a dip in one of three summer pools – Wainuiomata, McKenzie Baths in Petone and Eastbourne!
Enjoy getting out in nature in the poolside spa and hydroslide at Wainuiomata Summer Pool, having a splashing good time on the
splash pad at McKenzie Baths, or have a go at some lane swimming at Eastbourne.
The three summer pools open in November, followed by the blessing of the much-anticipated new pool at Naenae on 4 December.

To be known as Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness, it will open for business following a grand opening and community celebration on Saturday 7 December.
Mayor Campbell Barry said it will be one of the highlights of his time as Mayor and he’s excited that after five years Naenae would have their pool returned.
“The opening of Te Ngaengae, alongside Te Mako Community Centre, marks a new chapter for Naenae. The pool isn’t just returning – it’s bigger, more sustainable, and will revitalise the town centre. We expect to see more
people spending time in Naenae, supporting local businesses, and bringing new opportunities for the town centre.
“To have been as Mayor when the project started in 2020 and to be there again for the opening in December will be one of the proudest moments of my time as Mayor of Lower Hutt.”
“This project has been a true partnership with the community. The Community Advisory Group has been involved from the start, ensuring we delivered on what the Naenae community wanted. Continues on next page.

The opening will follow the installation of equipment and other fittings and a month of checking the performance of the pool and other systems and services, including with schools, sports teams, swim clubs and others.
The opening marks the culmination of nearly five years of effort following the closure of the old pool because of seismic concerns.
The new complex has a 50m pool, two moveable bulkheads to accommodate different activities at the same time, two zoom tubes, a family-friendly leisure pool, gym and pool-side party room.
The pool is a $68 million project, with $27 million coming from
central government through the Infrastructure Reference Group Fund in partnership with Crown Infrastructure Partners.
Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa gifted the project a cultural history that has informed the design. The building’s roof is reimagined as an upturned waka, and the entrance features a supporting pou whenua. The iwi recommended a lead artist to enable art to be embedded in the building.
As well as the health and social connection benefits that will come from the new facility, the project was also designed to deliver wider benefits for the community including using local companies where possible and giving local

people employment and training opportunities. We recycled or reused 80% of all building materials, saving more than 13,000 tonnes of scrap metal and concrete from going to landfill.
The complex is on track to achieve a Green Star 5 sustainability rating so it not only has less environmental impact and will be more efficient to run.
It is located next to Walter Mildenhall Park which is being revamped over the coming months to include play spaces, BBQ areas, picnic spots, wheeled activities, gardens, leisure activities and art displays. The nearby Te Mako Community Centre opened in June in the Heritage Category 1 Naenae Post Office and clock tower.

FAIRY WALK HOROEKA RESERVE
Take the kids on a fairy walk at Horoeka Reserve, spotting fairy houses along the way! This trail meanders through native bush, beginning with a well-marked gravel trail through mamku and ponga ferns. The lower part of the walk allows prams and youngsters to access fairy doors along the path. Often walked in a clockwise direction, the 1km loop is an easy track with gentle rises, bridges and regular signs to identify native plants. Look out for the surprise on one of the smaller bridges.
