Many people believe that expensive software is the only way to get things done, but there are multitudes of free tools available to help you get started and keep your site running. All you have to do is a little searching to find the best free tools for you. Do not use blinking, scrolling text or other animations. Also, steer clear of sounds or music that plays automatically. All of these things are distracting to users and provide nothing of value. In addition, connection speeds vary from one site visitor to the next, and everyone does not have the same speed. Those users with slower connections will resent the slow-loading elements of your mobile website. To help you design a more professional looking mobile website, do not include an image in the page background. A background image screams low quality site, plus these mobile sites usually take forever to load. When you are going for a more professional look, the last thing you want is your visitors waiting forever because images are still loading on your pages. Use a newsletter to gain repeat visitors. Allowing your customers to sign up for updates or important events can have them coming back for more. Place the signup form in a sidebar on your mobile website, and keep track of the people that sign up. Only send the newsletter to those who request it, or you could find yourself in hot water. It is always good to add a favicon to your website. The favicon is a 16x16 image file in the .Ico format. This image is the one you see next to the URL bar, next to the title of the page on an opened tab and is also visible on your bookmarks tab if you choose to bookmark a page. The favicon will help users quickly recognize your page in their browser without reading any text or directly viewing the page. Don't try to fit too much onto one page when you're designing a mobile website. If your page is too busy it will take a lot longer to load and can overwhelm visitors. When you're going to be putting up a lot of content, create pages for everything you can to reduce the clutter on your page. Keep your pages to a reasonable length. Add content through new pages on your mobile website, instead of tacking it on to the end of a home page. For the most part, readers are hesitant to keep going on a page that seems to scroll on forever. If you must have a lot of content on one page, include hyperlinks at the top and in sections throughout the page. This allows users to navigate through the available content without excessive scrolling. Test your mobile website in the most popular browsers and platforms to make sure that it displays correctly. Sometimes scripts that work in one browser may not produce the same results in another browser. So you may need take extra measures, like adding a function for browser detection, in order to ensure that your mobile website will display properly under most conditions.
