Employee Assistance program (EAP) services
Hurley Mental Health supports those who support Hurley through Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Services to Hurley/HPMS staff, physicians and residents.
Confidential EAP Services are offered for up to three visits which are not subject to insurance deductibles or co-pay as this is part of your benefits.
The focus of the EAP Services is to offer brief, problem-focused resolution and support particularly in this time of additional pressures for caregivers close to the bedside.
In addition to EAP Services, HMHA provides private individual and family therapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management and support. Hurley Mental Health has been providing outpatient mental health support in the community for 25 years. HMHA serves people ages two and older for a variety of mental health concerns including: • Adjustment to Life Events • Anxiety • Behavioral Issues • Mood Disorders • Psychosis • Substance Use and More

The documentary explores the holiday's growth out of the Black Power Movement in the 1960s to its present-day reality as a global, African holiday embraced by over 40 million celebrants. A podcast by kids for kids--with a little help from the adults! Join Avery and Jackson as they learn about history... Black history and talk about things that you might not learn in school. Kwanzaa Time! is a collective of diverse stories originally passed down through generations, family celebrations, and community gatherings.

Kayla Pilon, Diagnostic Radiology Technologist, is Hurley’s Employee of the Month for November. She has been at Hurley since 2013, when she enrolled in Hurley’s School of Radiology and completed the two year program to earn an Associate’s Degree in Radiologic Sciences. She was hired directly following graduation in 2015, and has been here ever since.
Kayla says that she “Enjoys the variety. We’re not doing the same thing every day, so we’re not getting stagnant. It’s never just clock in, clock out. I really enjoy traumas and fluoroscopy procedures.” Her work days vary, but due to the versatility of her position, she might be working in the emergency department, taking portable units to patients’ rooms, taking general x-rays down in the radiology department, or even working in surgery cases using a C-arm.
There are normally six to seven radiologic technologists on staff each day, and in a week they might each cover all of the areas their department services. She explains, “We have to make sure we get everything completed in a timely manner without compromising patient care. And I have great coworkers. We buddy up in the emergency department and with portables. We stay in contact throughout the day and work well as a team to cover all the areas and get the patients the care they need.”
When it was time to let her know she was being named Employee of the Month, Kayla got called to a meeting. She says, “I saw Melany and Amy out of the corner of my eye while my coworkers were showing up. And I had just been getting ready for an exam with a patient in the next room. So I was in shock. I didn't know it was happening until it was happening. No hints. I was very surprised.” She wasn’t even aware that she had been nominated, or who had nominated her for the award. She explains, “Of course, I’m very thankful and appreciative of whoever nominated me - I still don’t know who nominated me.”
While at Hurley, Kayla is focused on providing patients with great experiences, but outside of work, she is a self-described introvert. She says, “I spend a lot of time with my family. We have a one year old and a three year old. Besides that, a great night is getting the kids in bed and putting on a good Christmas movie.”
Kayla received a gift package that included a pizza party with his team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop, and a framed certificate. Congratulations, Kayla!

Mushroom Steak Fajitas
MAKES: 4 Servings PREPARATION TIME: 45 minutes
Bring another serving of vegetables and important nutrients to your plate with this twist on classic fajitas. We've upped the vegetables ante by sautéing savory mushrooms and mixing them with steak for an umami-rich, flavorful punch. And we've sped up the preparation time for this Tex-Mex favorite, foregoing marinating the steak by using a tender cut.
INGREDIENTS
• 12 ounces sirloin or other boneless steak (about 3/4-inch thick) • 3 cups sliced cremini mushrooms • 1 tablespoon no-salt fiesta lime seasoning (divided) • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 medium green bell pepper, sliced into strips • 1 medium red bell pepper, sliced into strips • 1 medium yellow bell pepper, sliced into strips • 8 whole-wheat tortillas (6-inch) • 1 medium tomato, diced • 2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce • 4 tablespoons non-fat sour cream
DIRECTIONS
1. Slice beef across the grain into 1/4-inch strips. Place in a medium bowl with 1/2 tablespoon fiesta lime seasoning; toss to coat.
2. Place mushrooms, peppers, and onion and remaining fiesta lime seasoning in a large bowl; toss to coat. 3. Heat oil in large, non-stick skillet. Add beef strips; cook about 3-4 minutes. Remove from skillet.
4. Place coated vegetables in skillet and sauté until vegetables are slightly tender, about 5-8 minutes. 5. Add beef back to skillet and sauté mixture 1-2 more minutes.
6. Assemble fajitas by dividing beef-vegetable mixture evenly on each tortilla, top with remaining ingredients and roll up.

Gurbaksh Esch MD was elected as an at-large board member of the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (MIAAP).
Dr. Esch also is a member of the MIAAP Governmental Affairs and Advocacy Committee, which fits into her activities when planning MIAAP Resident Advocacy Day.
The pediatric attending physician at the Hurley Children's Clinic in Flint, Mich., is the first Alice Hamilton Scholar with the Pediatric Public Health Initiative (jointly operated by Hurley Medical Center and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine), a two-year appointment that began in 2021. Dr. Esch also is an inpatient pediatric attending physician at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich.
So far in her PPHI position, she has received four grants: • Two AAP national grants to support health-equity efforts;, • A CDC grant to educate pediatricians in the Flint area about the effect of positive childhood experiences;, • A local Flint-based grant to train Hurley pediatric residents on trauma-informed care.
