EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
STEVEN GARTY
Steven Garty, Hurley’s Employee of the Month for October 2022, has worked as an Environmental Technician in Environmental Services for twenty-eight years. He was born and raised in Flint and went to Southwestern Academy. He originally decided to work at Hurley partly because his mother worked here in Sterile Services. They are not the only family members to work at Hurley either, because his sister works in the ER and even won Employee of the Month a few years ago.
Steven’s daily responsibilities as an Environmental Technician have changed a lot over the years, mainly because he has worked all over the hospital. He started working on 5E in 1995, before moving to the old ER for seven years. He has also worked on the project team, buffed the floors, and worked with biohazards and recyclable materials. In the twentyeight years he has worked at Hurley, he has done everything there is to do in his department. He now works as a team leader, primarily running the Xenex machine which disinfects rooms using UV light, and helping out wherever someone is needed. He says, “It’s been great spending all this time here and meeting all the people over the years, working with them. I even met my best friend here.”

Being named Employee of the Month was a big surprise, but a good one. As he says, “I thought it was pretty cool. I thought it was pretty nice to be recognized. I look at it more as EVS getting recognized. We all do so much, and sometimes we get overlooked. Anyone in Environmental Services could have got recognized and it would have been deserved. I don’t look to get recognized for doing what I was hired to do.”
When Steven is not at work, his biggest hobbies are playing in the yard and spending a lot of time with his wife and kids. And now he gets to hang out with his first grandchild, who is just turning one and a half years old. He also has a son at college at Indiana Tech University, who he visits regularly.
Steven received a gift package that included a pizza party with his team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop, and a framed certificate. Congratulations, Steven!
