VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
-Jordan Brown
Director of Volunteer and Community Engagement
Geraldine Redmond’s time as a Hurley volunteer is relatively new compared to some of her volunteer colleagues; however, Geraldine is not new to Hurley. Her mother, Betha Sanders, retired from Hurley’s Dietary Department in 1985. Geraldine and her children were born at Hurley, and she volunteers 18 hours a week in our Admitting Department.
Her work as a volunteer at Hurley originally began after she signed up at school, starting as a candy striper where she went around to rooms and passed out water. Now in Admitting, she helps check in people and get them to their destinations, which she says is her favorite part. She decided to volunteer again after her more recently becoming a patient. “The Hurley burn unit is so fantastic, they saved my life. Their care is exceptional and after my experience there, I decided to get included in the hospital by giving back.” A Flint native and community advocate, Geraldine has served this community most of her life. She graduated from Northwestern High School, served as Beecher School Board President and Cheer and Pom Pom Coach, and was employed for many years at Mt. Morris Township. She also worked for the City of Flint, Consumers Energy and she retired from the Genesee County Health Department.
She currently serves as the President and Resident Commissioner of the Flint Housing Commission Board which provides housing for low income people. Her other volunteerism includes being a board member of Healthier Black Elders and being a City of Flint elections chairperson, ensuring the elections process runs smoothly.

In her spare time Geraldine likes to dance, roller skate and bowl – anything interacting with people. She also loves spending time with her three children and three grandchildren, whether it be a family movie night, vacations, or just getting together.
While she said she was honored to be selected Volunteer of the Month, she also feels helping people is in her nature. “The people in the department I work in are so helpful, they’re all good in their own way.”
