any winemakers say the older the vine, the better the wine. Now we don’t like to brag but did you know some of our vines are older than those in France? Grapevines were planted in the Hunter by early settlers in the 1820s, making us Australia’s oldest continuous wine region. What you probably didn’t know was that the European vineyards where our vines came from were pretty much wiped out in the late 1800s thanks to a root-sucking bug called phylloxera. The devastating pest didn’t attack the Valley, so we’re blessed to have 11 historic blocks of the original vines (all over 100 years old) still producing iconic wines today… and that makes us pretty unique. So where can you find these prized Shiraz, Semillon and Chardonnay vineyards and gawk

at the gnarly old vines in all their twisted glory? You’ll have to ask their custodians that: Drayton’s, Mount Pleasant, Poole’s Rock and Tyrrell’s, who owns seven of the 11 blocks, including the oldest Shiraz vines in the region planted in 1867. As you’d expect, wines of such great pedigree are as rare as hen’s teeth and embody the spirit of the region. We’re all about quality over quantity. We are one of the smallest wine-growing regions in the country after all, but we hang our hats on delivering big results, consistently producing benchmark wines vintage after vintage… whether they’re our classic drops, creative blends or obscure varieties you’ve probably never heard of. ith a winegrowing heritage dating back 200 years, it’s no surprise we have a rich history of traditional winemaking methods, but the pioneering spirit is alive and well in the Hunter Valley with a maverick mob of winemakers spearheading a bunch of new varieties and wine styles. Our flagship Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Verdelho are still our reigning champs, but European varieties from the Mediterranean are winning favours with wine lovers and awards by the bucketload too. Just like Spain and Italy, the Hunter Valley has a warm, humid climate so it’s the perfect place to grow and produce wines native to Southern Europe. We now produce crisp whites like Vermentino, Savagnin and Fiano as well as easy-drinking reds including Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Barbera. Our game-changing winemakers also love testing and trialling new things. We’ve got winemakers who are crazy about wild yeast ferments, some into vegan wines and others who like to experiment with funky new blends – one fondly known as the dyslexic blend made with five different varieties. And then there are those who have adopted the latest leading-edge technology and ferment their wine in oversized eggs!

SUSTAINABLE Our grape growers have always had a deep connection to the land; cultivating and cherishing our vineyards from generation to generation. That legacy continues today with sustainable farming methods, including organic and biodynamic techniques, part of our winemakers’ ethos. They’re committed to reducing their carbon footprint, cutting their chemical and energy use, conserving water and recycling winery waste. That’s why you’ll see sheep grazing in vineyards and cover crops planted between rows of vines, drip irrigation in vineyards and solar panels galore soaking up the rays so more of our worldclass wines are made with power by the sun. We’ve got carbon neutral wines – Keith Tulloch Wine is the first Hunter Valley winery to be certified carbon neutral and only the second in the country – as well as organic and biodynamic players too with the largest organic producer – Tamburlaine – as well as Krinklewood, Ascella and Stonehurst all taking a holistic approach to winemaking. These new-age alchemists are creating magical wines that are gloriously drinkable and good for the planet too.

In summer the vineyards are lush and green with bulging bunches of ripening grapes shielded by canopies of bottle-green leaves. And in midJanuary, it’s all hands on for harvest, the most frenzied time of the year.

We’re all hooked on our utopian lifestyle – long lunches that linger to dinner, sundowners at sunset, garden-fresh food and mouthwatering wine grown in a stupendous setting of such unspoilt beauty – but it’s the people who are the lifeblood of our close-knit community. They’re a colourful bunch that’s for sure – we’ve got rugby tragics, Elvis impersonators, ballet lovers, muffin mavens, Dr Who fans, legends and larrikins aplenty. And the glue that binds everyone together is a passion for Hunter Valley wine. We drink it – and yeah perhaps sometimes we overthink it – but it’s all for a very good cause. SEASONAL COLOUR

It’s also time for spectacular sunset dining, a splash in a sparkling blue pool, #semsational Semillons and an ice-cold beer. The autumn winds whisper goodbye to the fiery red and gold leaves left on the vines and winemakers are busy blending and bottling in the winery. In winter, the now leafless vines go into hibernation, bunkering down from the cold and storing energy for next year’s crop. You’ll see outdoor firepits aplenty, with warming red wines and hearty flavours a central feature of winter feasts. It’s the perfect season for outdoor adventures, picnicking at wineries with the Hunter Valley Wine & Food Festival a big drawcard.

WE TALK TO WINE SELECTORS’ ADAM WALLS ABOUT HOW THE HUNTER VALLEY IS KEEPING THINGS FRESH IN THE WORLD OF WINE

fter almost 200 years of grape-growing and winemaking, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d tasted everything that Australia’s original wine country has to offer to discerning drinkers. We all know the Hunter Valley classics, after all. Bolshy Shiraz, big, bold Chardonnay and, of course, Semillon you just can’t find anywhere else. A quick chat with Adam Walls, however – Tasting Panel Co-Chair of Australia’s largest family-owned wine retailer, Wine Selectors – will soon set you straight on why the Hunter Valley still has some surprises up its sleeve. “The Hunter Valley has always been a site of immense innovation,” says Adam (or Wallsy, to his friends). “In fact, the region has diversified itself more than possibly any other region in the country.” And Adam certainly knows what he’s talking about. Besides heading up the Wine Selectors Tasting Panel with celebrated winemaker PJ Charteris, he’s a Len Evans Tutorial Dux, wine show judge and wine educator on such popular programmes as My Market Kitchen. He’s been with Wine Selectors the better part of a decade now, and the company – a familyowned and operated business overseen by Hunter Valley Living Legend Greg Walls – has been hand-selecting the very best wines from our region for almost 50 years.

TALKING ‘BOUT MY GENERATION Far from being stuck in its old ways, Adam argues that the Hunter is more dynamic than ever. Shaking off the perception of it being a region of dusty relics sticking to what they know, it’s a place that boasts an unrivalled fusion of tradition and experimentation, with both historic names and smaller, eccentric labels turning out exciting wines that are turning heads in the industry – and winning awards around the world.

An olderstyled blend made legendary in the 1950s and 1960s by Hunter Valley winemakers like the inimitable Maurice O’Shea of Mount Pleasant, it’s back in a big way according to Walls, embraced once again by Australian drinkers looking for a classic dry red, and inspiring a host of copycat examples around the country.

EVERYTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN New wave wines are also making a big splash in the Hunter. “Newer varieties like Vermentino and Sangiovese are being planted that are proving perfect for the region’s climate – and a massive hit with wine lovers,” Adam says. “It’s part of a broader movement of highlighting the many great vineyard sites around here and what grows best in them.” We reckon there’s no better way to discover anew the charm of Hunter wines than with Wine Selectors. VERDELHO A style unique to the Hunter Valley, Verdelho, customarily made without oak, is a fruit-driven medium-bodied wine. SHIRAZ Shiraz is undoubtedly the most important red variety in the Hunter Valley. Regionally distinctive, it is medium to fullbodied, characterised when young by blackberry, mulberry and plum characters, as well as spice, chocolate and liquorice with the characteristic regional earthy, leathery tones and complexity developing with age. OTHER VARIETALS Our hero wine icons – Semillon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Verdelho are supported by up and coming European varieties such as Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Barbera, Montepulciano, Fiano and Vermentino which are thriving in the Hunter climate. A number of specialty wines, including organic, sparkling, fortified and dessert wines, are also produced.
