LIVING LEGEND KEVIN SOBELS.

HUNTER VALLEY LEGENDS AND WINE INDUSTRY AWARDS The 2014 Hunter Valley Legends and Wine Industry Awards winners were announced at a gala event at the historic Wyndham Estate last year (this year’s awards will be held on May 28). The winners of each category were judged by a panel of past winners, industry leaders and guest media judge, Patrick Haddock. › Winemaker of the Year, sponsored by First Creek Winemaking Services, recognises an outstanding Hunter Valley winemaker who is a leader in their profession and the 2014 winner is multi-award-winning winemaker Andrew Thomas from Thomas Wines. › Cellar Door of the Year, sponsored by CBA Local Business Banking, recognises excellence at the cellar door, and the family-owned and operated Tulloch Wines won this coveted accolade. › Rising Star of the Year, sponsored by Riedel, recognises an aspiring star involved in winemaking, vineyard management, marketing or sales and this year Belinda Stapleton from Spicers Vineyards Estate and Restaurant Botanica took home the title. › Viticulturist of the Year, sponsored by Laffort Australia, recognises an outstanding viticulturist involved in the management of Hunter Valley vineyards and this year’s recipient was Louise Eather from Wyndham Estate. › Kevin Sobels was inducted into the Hunter Valley Hall of Fame as the 2014 Living Legend, acknowledging his lifetime of service to the Hunter Valley. › The Hunter Valley Heritage Award, sponsored by Brian and Fay McGuigan, honours the Hunter Valley’s history as Australia’s oldest commercial wine region. This year, there were two recipients: the first was the 1973 Hunter Vintage Festival Poster, and the second was Cessnock’s oldest sawn timber home Marthaville. The Heritage-Trust listed twin-gabled homestead was built as early as 1885 and retains many of its original features. For full details of results, visit winecountry.com.au 59
