The Graduating Class of 2023 As 2023 draws to a close, we present to you our annual Celebrate publication capturing the HSC achievements of the graduating cohort. Among the other 70,000 HSC students across NSW, our Year 12 students received their HSC results and ATARs on Thursday 14th December. Each one of our graduates has their own talents. While we shine the spotlight on the high achievers in Celebrate, it is important to recognise those students who have not given up despite the obstacles placed before them. We celebrate and honour each and every one of our graduates in these pages The graduating Class of 2023 is a unique one. Three of our graduates are second generation students, and 22 are Endeavour students who have attended HVGS for their entire school career. All of our graduates have weathered COVID disruptions and demonstrated great agility in the pivot to online schooling during COVID. They embraced the relative autonomy of Years 11 and 12 and the myriad of options their future holds. They are a microcosm of Gen Z: a creative, tenacious and entrepreneurial generation and captured in these pages are the many “fruits of their labour”. 31 of are graduates are on the Distinguished Achievers’ List and just under fifty percent of them achieved an ATAR above 80. As a non-selective and inclusive school, we should be proud of these achievements. We pride ourselves on meeting each child where they are and helping them get to where they need to go; these results are indicative of the hard work and commitment of our students and those teachers who have worked tirelessly to help our graduates reach their potential. Students and parents frequently reference the extraordinary support, time and care given by our teachers, and indeed by all staff who influence and shape the learning opportunities of the students in our care. We acknowledge the significant work undertaken by all HVGS staff, often out of the view of colleagues and parents, and it is with sincere gratitude that I thank our staff for the professional and personal commitment to their students. Whilst the Class of 2023 is recognised in the HSC School Rankings published in the media, we also know that our students are much more than this ranking. Sitting behind each individual student are countless stories of endurance and effort as students challenge themselves to go that little harder and do that little bit better.

In Celebrate we also recognise and value individual excellence, such as Finnegan Slattery O’Brien, our Year 12 Dux, who made the NESA All-Round Achiever List. This list celebrates students who achieved the highest possible Band in 10 or more units in their HSC. Likewise, Ronan Green ranked 6th in the state in Software Design and Development, after already being ranked 9th in the Information Processes and Technology course in 2022. Taylah Percival was ranked 7th in the State in Earth and Environmental Science this year. For these achievements, both Taylah and Ronan were recognised by NESA as Top Performers in a HSC Course. In addition, Ronan Green has achieved the School’s highest ATAR of 99.50, one of the highest ATARs in the School’s history. Ronan Green is one of our Endeavour Students. Our graduates leave our gates now as young adults who, through their schooling, have learned much about their world and about themselves. They have also taught us much too. Through their actions they have provided lessons to their peers and the broader school community about the importance of responsibility, compassion, respect, integrity, courage, optimism, citizenship and gratitude. It is with the last value that I end: to our graduating class of 2023, thank you for sharing your educational journey with us and now take a moment to celebrate. Rebecca Butterworth Principal

RONAN GREEN

HIGHEST ATAR

Ronan Green and HVGS Prinicpal Rebecca Butterworth

Among the exceptional and high-achieving individuals that make up the Class of 2023, congratulations to Ronan Green who has achieved the highest ATAR, boasting an impressive rank of 99.50. Ronan’s accomplishment surpassed even his own expectations, as he humbly admits, “I really wasn’t expecting to score so high; in honesty, I was hoping for a 96 but ended up with the 99.50! I am genuinely thrilled.” While some students are avid note takers in the lead up to exams, Ronan’s principle for success is clear: “Practice exams, practice exams, practice exams!” He also underscores the significance of familiarising oneself with the exam format. “I truly think understanding what to anticipate is the best thing I could have done because I learned how to best prepare for being in the exam situation.” When it comes to subjects like Mathematics and English, Ronan never shyed away from engaging with challenging problems and encourages other to not shy away either. “Do lots of maths questions and work at a level where it’s slightly too hard. Not so hard that you’re getting everything wrong, but enough that it challenges you and you can see the areas you need to work on.” “For English, write lots of essays. I found it’s a volume thing, a LOT of work, and repetition.” Ronan engaged deeply in the Software Design and Development course and his enthusiam for technology is obvious. In fact, Ronan completed the Information Processes and Technology Course as a Year 11 student via Distance Education and finished 9th in the state in 2022! His passion to make a difference via technology is evident and he has already applied what he has learned in the real-world. “I created a program which is now utilised in my father’s pharmacy. The program automates the generation of batch sheets for drug compounding. I loved doing this because it was a real-world problem that needed to be solved.” Reflecting on his time at school, Ronan attributes much of his success to the dedicated teachers at HVGS. “The biggest resource HVGS has is the teachers. Ms Austin, Mr Wyatt, and Mrs Walsh have provided me with unwavering support. They have a genuine desire to see their students succeed.” “I was emailing them insane amounts of essays, practice exams, and asking for feedback non-stop. They wanted me to succeed and were always open to help,” said Ronan.

Ronan’s involvement in co-curricular activities, particularly music, played a pivotal role in shaping his academic skills and successes. Proficient on the saxophone, especially in jazz, music allowed him to focus on a variety of things at the same time and connect the dots. “I found music highly beneficial for problem-solving and it had a big impact on my academics.” Looking ahead, Ronan plans to attend the University of New South Wales to study Computer Science, with aspirations to secure internships for industry exposure and connections. His future career goal is crystal clear: to dive headfirst into the tech industry as a Software Developer/ Engineer. Ronan Green’s journey serves as a compelling testament to the symbiosis between academic diligence, passionate pursuits, and the support of a nurturing educational environment. Ronan has been an engaged , committed and dedicated member of the HVGS community since preschool and we wish him the best of luck as he pursues a career rich in opportunity. Ronan’s other noteable achievements this year include: •

First Place in Mathematics Extension 2

Mathematics Medallion for Excellence

FINNEGAN SLATERY-O’BRIEN

HSC ALL-ROUNDER

Finnegan Slattery-O’Brien and and HVGS Board Chair Kristine Littlewood

Finnegan Slattery-O’Brien, through pure hard work and commitment, has achieved a level of academic excellence in his final year of school worthy of celebration. From serving as the School’s Vice-Captain in 2023 to being named on the prestigious HSC All Rounders Merit List for achieving top band results in at least 10 units of study, Finn’s journey of success is due to his strong work ethic and his innate desire to learn. Finn’s extensive list of accolades stands as a testament to the profound link between academic success and a meticulous investment of effort and discipline. The attainment of results like Finn’s require a substantial commitment to academic pursuits. This commitment is especially noteworthy in Finn’s case, as he systematically refined his study habits throughout his concluding years of school. Finn’s approach to preparing for study is marked by a unique ritual: “Drinking tea and playing music for five minutes just before I begin studying has ‘Pavlov-dogged’ my brain into getting into the zone for study quickly,” said Finn. This practice, when coupled with his preferred tools — handwriting, palm cards, and OneNote summaries — comprises a well-structured system tailored specifically to navigate subjects with substantial content. Beyond the structured curriculum, Finn’s intellectual curiosity and fervour for learning extend beyond routine academic requirements. His high level of academic enthusiasm manifested during the creation of his English Extension 2 Major Work — an essay centred on Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman.” Originating from a state of indecisiveness (his words), this project matured through extensive research, which revealed not only his analytical skills but also offered a glimpse into the self-discovery inherent in academic exploration available to students who seek it at HVGS. The culmination of this work was not just motivating but truly inspiring for Finn. “This work was inspiring in the sense that I learned a lot about the research process for the future, for example, dissertations. I was able to get immersed in my own interests and discover more about myself and what I might want to do – I loved exploring a text, doing my own literary analysis, and drawing my own conclusions.” In offering guidance to future students aspiring to academic excellence, Finn advises, “Pick subjects you know you love and that dovetail nicely into each other.” He underscores the significance of routine, emphasising the early cultivation of a personal study rhythm. Finnegan’s routine, characterised by focused home study and dedicated classroom

time for collaborative exploration and idea consolidation, further demonstrates the value of planning. Expressing gratitude to his Mentors and educators, Finn acknowledges the pivotal role his teachers played in his academic journey. His aspirations for the future, including the prospect of entering fields such as Law/International Relations, are reflective of a comprehensive and diverse range of academic interests and the academic challenges offered to him by the School. Celebrating Finn’s accomplishments, HVGS not only recognises an outstanding student but an embodiment of the institution’s values and commitment to excellence. As the future doors of academia swing open for Finn, they signify the commencement of a journey that will undoubtedly continue to inspire Finn day-to-day, and those with a similiar curiority and work ethic. Finn’s other noteable achievements this year include: •

HARRISON ALLOMES Meet Harrison Allomes, the HVGS sports star, whose passion for cricket has fuelled his dreams since childhood. “When I was younger, I wanted to play cricket for Australia. It was and still is my favourite sport, something I love. Little me dreamed of being the Australian Captain.” Harrison’s enthusiasm extends beyond the pitch into the classroom, where he found his favourite subject in PDHPE. “I have always loved PDHPE throughout school, mostly because of the practical lessons, but the topics covered in Year 11 and 12 were so interesting and exciting for me,” says Harrison. The opportunities to play school cricket hold a special place in Harrison’s heart. “Playing school cricket has been a journey I’ve enjoyed immensely. Being able to play with friends and connect with older and younger students has been an amazing opportunity that I am extremely grateful for.” Looking toward the future, Harrison has secured an Early Entry offer for a Physiotherapy degree at the University of Newcastle. He imparts valuable advice to those following a similiar path, “Consistency and early preparation are key! I have tried to work as hard as I could, stay up to date with summaries and notes and used my time in Year 11 to learn the skills needed for Year 12, which gave me a kickstart and lowered my workload.” Harrison exemplifies dedication, passion, and a balanced approach to academics and sports, showcasing the spirit of a true HVGS star. In 2023, Harrison received the HSC Subject Prize for PDHPE, an Academic Excellence Award for outstanding performance across the breadth of his academic program, was acknowledged for his contribution to the life of the Senior School, was awarded the Geoffrey Newton and Family Perpetual Trophy for All-rounder in Year 12 and received the Jason Johnston Tertiary Scholarship for Health Sciences.

AMBER HIGGINS The end of school offers an apt time to reflect on past dreams and experiences. From aspiring fiction author to pursuing a career in medicine, Amber’s heart for humanitarian activities has grown over her time at HVGS. “In my younger years, I was captivated by the idea of becoming a fiction author, immersed in writing short stories and devouring books. Now I am seeking a medical degree and collaborative work with global aid organisations for medical education and treatment.” Next stop for Amber is a Diploma of Languages at Newcastle University while she prepares for the rigorous testing required for medical studies. “While I now have a strong desire to pursue medicine, it is only recently I considered it as an option. I had no interest in a career dealing with various bodily fluids. Now, I want nothing more than to help people in less advantaged circumstances have access to medical assistance.” As she reaches the culmination of her formal schooling, Amber reflects on cherished memories. Competing at a national level with her sisters on the HVGS Aerobics team has been a stand out from her time at HVGS. This year, Amber adds a new unforgettable memory to her collection: singing alongside past students, current students, and staff at this year’s HVGS Symphony Orchestra Concert. Amber’s journey showcases the transformative power of evolving passions and the depth of experiences offered by HVGS in nurturing not just academic but also creative and altruistic ambitions. In 2023, Amber received three HSC Subject prizes for German Continuers, Mathematics Standard and the Lidbury Family Award for Agriculture. She received an Academic Excellence Award for outstanding performance across the breadth of her academic program and was acknowledged for her contribution to the life of the Senior School. She also received the Heather Russell-McLaren Trophy for Music and The University of Newcastle Prize for a top Academic student (preferencing UoN).

MONTANA GAY GAY

University Early Entry Offers More than 3/4 of HVGS students have been successful in receiving Early Entry Offers to University. Here’s the top areas of study our students are pursuing.

Once harbouring dreams of the glitz and glamour associated with being a Hollywood actress, Montana has steered her focus toward a career with the Royal Australian Air Force, a passion she has ardently nurtured since Year 7; and a Bachelor of Arts at UNSW Canberra. In navigating her HSC studies, Montana took a pragmatic approach. “I tried to take every day as it came and focused on the next big thing rather than being overwhelmed by everything.” English stands out as Montana’s favourite subject, a sentiment she attributes to the “amazing and supportive teachers that have so much passion for what they do.” Their enthusiasm played a pivotal role in allowing her to not only enjoy but also immerse herself in the texts studied throughout the course.

Agriculture, Environmental Studies and Rural Sciences

Business and Releated Fields

Beyond excelling in her academic pursuits, Montana has soared to new heights, both figuratively and literally. This year, she achieved the remarkable feat of being named Best Cadet on Course in her glider not once, but twice, and successfully completed her first solo flight. Montana’s commitment extends beyond the classroom and the sky, through her active engagement in various service activities within the school and local community, including her work as a Prefect on the Leadership Team and participating in the 24-Hour Famine hosted by the School which emphasised to her the positive impact that service can make on people and communities, globally.

Law and Related Fields

Psychology

Nursing, Health and Medicine

Science

Before embarking on her tertiary studies, Montana eagerly anticipates some well-deserved downtime, which includes travel and camping along the Coast with friends. Montana’s journey is a testament to her versatility, dedication, and the pursuit of meaningful experiences both within and beyond the academic realm.

ZACHARY IRWIN Driven by a genuine passion for Economics and Agriculture, HVGS Prefect Zachary Irwin, is charting a course towards a career in Agricultural Economics. His sights are set on furthering his education at the University of New England, where he aspires to pursue a Bachelor of Agriculture and Resource Economics. However, Zac’s current aspirations stand in stark contrast to his childhood dreams! “When I was younger, I was obsessed with Elvis Presley and was determined to be his replacement. Yet, that dream faded quickly when I realised I couldn’t sing,” says Zac. Throughout his academic journey, Zac has been a diligent and engaged student. Reflecting on his approach to overcoming the challenges of HSC studies, he acknowledges the pivotal role of his teachers. “I heavily relied on my teachers for input and feedback on my work, allowing me to identify areas for improvement and refine the skill of crafting well-structured and cohesive responses.” Zac’s participation and success in the HVGS co-curricular sports program has added vibrant layers to his school experience. “I hold dear the school-based competitions that enriched my journey in golf and equestrian.” “A standout moment was representing Team NSW at the Marcus Oldham Australian Interschool Championships for Equestrian, an honour I achieved in both Year 11 and Year 12.” Zac’s HVGS journey reveals a diverse array of interests and experiences. Seeking feedback for improvement from his teachers has been instrumental in Zac’s journey toward shaping him into the well-rounded individual he has become. In 2023, Zac was acknowledged for his contribution to the life of the Senior School through his involvement in the Cocurricular and Leadership Program.

SOPHIE HAWTHORNE Sophie once dreamed of becoming a vet, but a passion for percussion emerged at school and her heart now beats for a new dream - playing drums in Broadway musicals. “Now I’m older, my dream job has shifted from the field of animals to the music industry and I next aspire to study a Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts, specialising in performance at the University of Newcastle.” Sophie has been a joy to watch in our P-Crush Percussion Ensemble, but her fondest memory of her time at HVGS, was her involvement in the 2022 production of The Addams Family., which only highlights the value and importance of School productions and the creative arts for students. Approaching the poignant conclusion of her academic journey, Sophie acknowledges the emotional challenge of saying goodbye to the place that has been her educational home since Preschool. “It’s going to be tough not going to school each day. I will genuinely miss my friends and the teachers with whom I have built such strong relationships.” The infectious joy that Sophie radiates from behind the drum kit will linger at HVGS long after she leaves. Confident in her passion, we anticipate a future for Sophie that resonates with purpose, fulfilment and music. In 2023, Sophie was recognised for her talent and was the recipient of a new academic prize, The McGavin Music Industry Prize, kindly donated by the McGavin family. She also received two HSC Subject awards for Music 1 and The Lucy Howell Memorial Prize for Excellence and First in Hospitality (VET), together with an acknowledgement of her contribution to the life of the Senior School.

The SHAPE Exhibition features a selection of students’ exemplary HSC major projects from Design and Technology, Industrial Technology, and Textiles and Design. Congratulations to Felix Ashton and Lucy Hungerford who were both nominated for their innovative and creative projects. Lucy was also awarded a HSC Subject Award for Design and Technology.

Roller Crimper Felix’s Major Design Project offers an alternative solution to killing weeds without having a negative impact on the environment as seen through heavy chemical use. The roller crimper also adds organic matter to the soil but terminates the grass or weeds so that it can be managed properly. His project also combined an air seeder, which was a very unique application of the technology, minimising the number of passes required and subsequent greenhouse emissions.

K.E.R.K – Kids’ Emergency Relief Kit Lucy’s Major Design Project offers a solution for kids who are displaced due to natural disasters. Her design focuses on a child-friendly backpack with a compact shelter for emergency sleeping. The design also includes a range of interactive handbooks to assist parents and careers in reducing the psychological impact on the child. With the unrest playing out in several places around the world the design has empathy and care at its core.
