nach der schwierigen Corona-Zeit ist vergangenes Jahr der Restart hervorragend gelungen und für 2023 stehen nun alle Signale auf grün.
Durch hohe Investitionen u.a. in die Veranstaltungstechnik und in die Digitalisierung macht sich das Estrel fit für die Zukunft. Davon profitierten in den vergangenen Monaten bereits einzigartige Events wie z.B. der dbb Gewerkschaftstag, der 46. Wissenschaftliche Kongress der Deutschen Post oder der SEPAWA Kongress.
Das sind nicht die einzigen Innovationen – mit den neuen Systemen „Straiv“ und „workday“ schreitet die Digitalisierung mit großen Schritten voran. Darüber hinaus wird das Thema
Nachhaltigkeit im Estrel forciert und alle Abteilungen arbeiten mit Hochdruck an der bevorstehenden Zertifizierung. Einzigartig ist auch das Konzept des Restaurant und Hotel Schloss Britz, das eigenverantwortlich von unseren Auszubildenden betrieben wird. Doch die allergrößte Herausforderung der kommenden zwei Jahre ist der Bau des Estrel Tower, der nun richtig an Fahrt aufgenommen hat und wöchentlich Etage um Etage in den Himmel wächst.

Our restart last year following the challenges of the pandemic was hugely successful, and now we’re moving full steam ahead in 2023.
With significant new investments in areas like event technology and digitalisation, the Estrel is preparing for an even brighter future. A few of the high-profile events that benefited from these new technologies over recent months were the trade union conference of the German Civil Servants' Association (dbb), the 46th Deutsche Post Scientific Congress, and the SEPAWA Congress.
But innovation doesn’t stop there at the Estrel – we’re taking huge strides forward in digitalisation with our new “Straiv” and “workday” systems. Sustainability is also a key focus, with all departments working hard to achieve green certification for our property. Another of our one-of-a-kind offerings is Schloss Britz Restaurant & Hotel, which is run by Estrel trainees. And finally, our biggest challenge by far of the next two years will be the completion of Estrel Tower, which is already reaching for the sky, growing floor-by-floor on a weekly basis.

Das 50-köpfige Team, darunter zehn Produktionsleiter, Fachplaner und fünf Azubis, steht den Kunden mit seinem Know How zur Seite. Ob es um Beleuchtung, Ton, Video- und Projektionstechnik, Rigging, Bühnentechnik oder die technische Planung geht, das Team deckt alles mit großer Leidenschaft ab.
Im letzten Jahr durfte das Estrel mit Veranstaltungen wieder voll durchstarten. Insgesamt fanden über 1.000 Veranstaltungen mit 145.763 Teilnehmern statt. Eines der Highlights des vergangenen Jahres war der Gewerkschaftstag des dbb, den das Estrel ganzheitlich von der Planung bis zur Dekoration begleitet hat. Um die 1.000 stimmberechtigten Delegierten und Gastdelegierten aus allen Bereichen des öffentlichen Dienstes, die zum Gewerkschaftstag aus ganz Deutschland angereist waren, wurden beherbergt. Erstmalig wurde eine LED-Leinwand mit den Abmaßen 45 m Breite x 5 m Höhe gebaut, die über die gesamte Längsseite der riesigen Estrel Convention Hall verlief. Für die Abendveranstaltung wurden 155 Galatische und 350 Banketttische aufgestellt. Bereits zweieinhalb Jahre zuvor wurde mit der Planung begonnen, der Aufbau begann allerdings erst wenige Tage zuvor. Für ein Event dieser Größe also fast Rekordzeit.
Aber auch in diesem Jahr stehen dem Estrel wieder einzigartige Events bevor. Thomas Herzberg, Leiter der Veranstaltungstechnik, und Thomas Anemüller,
Teamleiter Bühnen & Dekorationsbau, freuen sich auf jedes Einzelne, denn „jede Veranstaltung verdient Respekt bei der Umsetzung, soll einzigartig sein und den Teilnehmern noch lange in positiver Erinnerung bleiben.“
Die schönsten Herausforderungen für die beiden Veranstaltungstechniker sind besonders kreative Events, die durch dramaturgische Akzente einen „Aha-Effekt“ erzielen und bei denen man den Gästen ansieht, dass die Veranstaltung alle Erwartungen übertrifft.
Laut Thomas Herzberg ist es unvermeidlich, Veränderungen anzunehmen und umzusetzen, um in der Veranstaltungstechnik „state of the art“ zu bleiben und sich von anderen abzuheben. Ein großer Aspekt hierbei ist das Thema Nachhaltigkeit, das mehr und mehr in den Fokus rückt. Durch die vielen wechselnden Veranstaltungen fällt jeweils viel Material an. Hier haben die Veranstaltungstechniker eine gute Lösung zur Ressourceneinsparung gefunden. Bei immer mehr Veranstaltungen kommt nun ein wiederverwendbares, modulares Bühnenbausystem zum Einsatz. Dieses neuartige und flexible System besteht aus Einzelteilen, aus denen große höchst flexible Bühnenbilder geschaffen werden können, die mehrere 100 m 2 abdecken. Den kreativen Möglichkeiten zur Gestaltung sind daher keine Grenzen gesetzt.

Our 50-strong events team, which includes ten production managers, specialist planners, and five trainees, is always on-hand to support clients with extensive technical know-how. Whether it’s lighting, sound, video and projection technology, rigging, stage technology or technical planning, the team addresses our clients’ every need with passion and dedication.
Last year, the Estrel hit the ground running, welcoming 145,763 total guests to over 1,000 individual events.
One of the highlights of the past year was the trade union conference of the German Civil Servants' Association (dbb), which the Estrel saw all the way from planning to the final touches on decorations. Around 1,000 voting delegates and guest delegates from all areas of the civil service sector and from across Germany attended. For the first time in Estrel history, we built an LED screen 45 metres wide and 5 metres tall, which ran lengthways along the entire side wall of the gigantic Estrel Convention Hall. 155 gala tables and 350 banquet tables were set up for the evening festivities. Planning was set in motion two and a half years prior to the conference itself, but setup began only days before – an almost record turnaround for an event of this scale.
This year too, the Estrel has unique events on the horizon. Thomas Herzberg, Head of Event Technology, and Thomas Anemüller, Team Leader for Stages & Decoration, are looking forward to each and every one, as “every event deserves respect in its implementation and a unique flair, and should become a cherished memory for its guests for years to come”.
The two event technicians' favourite challenge is putting together particularly creative events that aim for the “wow” factor with show-stopping embellishments – so they can tell from just a glance at guests’ faces that the event has exceeded all expectations.
According to Thomas Herzberg, adopting and implementing change is crucial to maintaining an edge over competitors and staying up to date with state-of-the-art event technology. One major consideration is sustainability, which is increasingly shifting to the forefront of the industry. The Estrel’s diverse programme of rotating events results in the accumulation of a lot of materials. Here, our event technicians have found an ingenious solution to help conserve resources: A reusable, modular stage construction system is being used at an increasing number of our events. This novel, flexible system consists of individual parts from which large, highly flexible stage sets can be created, covering several hundred square metres – the possibilities are endless.

In rasantem Tempo schießt das Leuchtturmprojekt Berlins in die Höhe. Die ersten Etagen sind bereits fertig und die Grundstruktur lässt sich erahnen. Das neue Wahrzeichen der Stadt nimmt Form an: Der Estrel Tower. Bereits in diesem Jahr werden wir einige wichtige Etappen erreichen. Im März wird unser erstes Musterzimmer fertiggestellt sein, welches sich dann in der Ziegrastraße 1 befindet. Ab April starten wir mit der Errichtung des Atriums, diverser Breakout Räume und des Ballrooms. Anfang Juni nehmen wir dann die Fassade in Angriff, um unserem Ziel ein Stück näherzukommen.
Insgesamt entsteht ein offener Raum für besondere Erlebnisse – ein „Mixed-Use“ Gebäude. Neben den 525 Hotelzimmern und Serviced Apartments entstehen hier 9.000 m 2 modernste Büround Coworking Fläche, sowie ein 2.000 m 2 großer Veranstaltungsbereich im Sockel des Towers. Herzstück des Towers ist, ähnlich wie im Estrel, das lichtdurchflutete, begrünte, öffentliche Atrium. Auch für kulinarischen Genuss ist gesorgt. In der 43. und 44. Etage wird es ein „Farm to Table“Restaurant, das die Produkte ohne Zwischenhändler direkt vom Erzeuger bezieht, geben. Hierfür wurde sogar bereits ein Hof in Brandenburg erworben. Ein weiteres Glanzstück wird die Skybar im obersten Stockwerk sein, die mit einer eindrucksvollen Außenterrasse einen Blick auf ganz Berlin ermöglicht. Auch Private Dining und Meeting Räume sollen in den obersten Etagen realisiert werden. Ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt, der von Beginn an in die Planung mit eingeflossen ist, ist die Nachhaltigkeit. Neben begrünten Dächern inklusive Photovoltaikanlagen und Wildblumenwiesen im Außengelände wurde eine Fassade entworfen, deren Finnen speziell an die Sonneneinstrahlung angepasst wurden und somit die Temperatur im Gebäude in der Sommerzeit unterstützend regulieren. Zusätzlich werden für die Innenarchitektur regionale Hölzer und recycelte Materialien verwendet. Auch im Parkhaus sind über die Hälfte der Stellflächen für Fahrräder vorgesehen. Das ganze Projekt wird natürlich auch von einem innovativen CO 2 -sparenden Energiekonzept begleitet.
Der Estrel Tower schafft einen neuen Raum für Diversität, Nachhaltigkeit und Innovation und wird somit ein weiteres Highlight für die Hauptstadt und alle, die sie besuchen.
Der Tower ist ein Leuchtturmprojekt für Berlin. Wurde so etwas Ähnliches in Deutschland schon einmal gestaltet?
So etwas in der Form wurde noch nicht gestaltet, vor allem weil der Tower auch an den aktuellen Bestand anschließt und wir vieles anders machen als andere. Insgesamt ist diese Zusammensetzung relativ einzigartig.
Bestimmt gab es auch hin und wieder ein paar Hindernisse zu bewältigen, wie sahen diese aus?
Eines der großen Probleme war, dass durch die vielen äußeren Einflüsse, wie der Krieg oder auch die Pandemie, viele Baumaterialien nicht mehr geliefert wurden. Zusätzlich wurde zu Beginn des Tower Baus generell viel in Berlin gebaut, daher standen wir im harten Konkurrenzkampf mit anderen Baufirmen, um überhaupt Material zu bekommen. Mittlerweile wird allerdings wieder weniger gebaut und durch die steigenden Zinsen und die rückläufige Konjunktur hat sich die Situation entspannt.
Zusätzlich gab es noch mit der Baugrube und den großen Bohrpfählen Probleme, denn die Bodenplatte ist 3,80 m hoch, also extrem massiv und daher ist es sehr kompliziert gewesen. Außerdem ist immer mal wieder Wasser auf-
getaucht, da die Platte nicht ganz dicht war, das hat uns noch mal sechs Wochen an Zeit gekostet und jetzt schauen wir, wie wir diese aufholen können.
Durch den Tower werden viele neue Möglichkeiten geschaffen und auch der ganze Bezirk ist stetig im Wandel und wird immer beliebter, wie glauben Sie wirkt sich der Tower auf Neukölln aus?
Also man hofft natürlich, dass er sich positiv auswirkt. Durch die Größe, unsere neue Anbindung zur Autobahn und die Tatsache, dass man in 10 Minuten am Flughafen ist, wirkt der Tower doch ein bisschen wie das Tor zur Stadt. Ab hier fängt die Innenstadt an und der Tower markiert das noch mal und bietet einen schönen Eingang. Ich glaube, dass man dann den Bezirk vielleicht noch mal anders wahrnimmt.
Sie sind ja auch sehr involviert in das Projekt, was ist Ihr persönliches Highlight an dem Projekt?
Mein persönliches Highlight an dem Projekt ist es, mit meinem Vater zusammenzuarbeiten. Das ist natürlich was super cooles. Das ist eine „once in a Lifetime“-Chance und macht mir natürlich viel Spaß. Wir verstehen uns gut und ich kann viel von seinem Wissen profitieren, denn er kennt sich da natürlich viel besser aus als ich. Aber ich glaube, wir ergänzen uns da ganz gut gegenseitig.
Selbstverständlich geht es beim Tower um das Gebäude an sich – aber es ist ja immer so: Am Ende sind es die Menschen und das Team, die das Gebäude füllen. Es macht einfach Spaß, mit den Leuten zusammen zu arbeiten.
Berlin's new flagship project is reaching for the sky at a breathtaking pace. The first few floors are already finished, and the basic structure is coming into view. The Estrel Tower – a new addition to the city’s skyline – is taking shape.
Several key milestones will be reached before the end of this year. In March, we will cut the ribbon to our first model room, located at Ziegrastraße 1. In April, construction will begin on the atrium, as well as on the ballroom and several breakout rooms. In June, it will be time to commence the building’s façade – another big step closer to completing this remarkable project.
As a mixed-use building, the tower will provide an open space for exceptional ex periences. In addition to 525 hotel rooms and serviced apartments, a 9,000 m 2 state-of-the-art office and co-working space, and a 2,000 m 2 event space will be built into the base of the tower. At the heart of the tower will be an open-plan atrium filled with plants and natural light – a new take on an Estrel signature.
Of course, culinary delights are on the menu, too. Spanning the 43rd and 44th floors, a farm-to-table restaurant will serve food directly from the source; a farm has already been acquired in Brandenburg specifically for this purpose. Another highlight will be the Skybar on the top floor, with an impressive outdoor terrace boasting panoramic views over Berlin. Private dining and meeting rooms are also planned for the top floor.
Another key aspect of this project, which has been central to planning right from the start, is sustainability. In addition to green roofs with solar panels and wildflower meadows in the outdoor areas, the building’s façade has been designed with vertical fins that are specially adapted to the sun's rays. These will aide in regulating the building’s inside temperature during the summertime. The interior design uses regional wood and recycled materials, and more than half of the spaces in the parking facility are reserved for bicycles. The whole project goes hand in hand with an innovative carbon-reducing energy concept.
In creating a new space for diversity, sustainability, and innovation, the Estrel Tower is set to become a new highlight of the German capital, and a favourite among its visitors.
The Estrel Tower is a flagship project for Berlin. Has Germany ever seen anything like this before?
Nothing quite like this has ever been built before, especially since the tower will be connected to existing buildings. We're doing a lot of things differently. Overall, the nature of this project is pretty unique. Surely you must have encountered a few obstacles along the way – what were they?
One of the biggest challenges came down to external factors – like the war in Ukraine and the pandemic – which caused shortages in the building materials supply chain. Additionally, there were a lot of other construction projects underway in Berlin when we began work on the tower, so we found ourselves in fierce competition with other companies over materials. Since then, the construction rate in Berlin has slowed down again, and the situation has eased a bit as a result of rising interest rates and the downward economic trend.
We also ran into problems with the construction trench and foundation piles. The foundation slab is 3.8 m thick and therefore extremely heavy, which complicated the construction process. Then we
noticed that water was seeping through the slab, because it was not completely sealed. That set us back another six weeks. Now we're looking for ways to streamline the next steps to get back on schedule.
The Estrel Tower will create many new opportunities for the local area, which is also constantly changing and gaining popularity. How do you think the tower will affect Neukölln?
Of course, we hope that it will have a positive effect on the area. Because of its size, our new connection to the motorway, and the fact that the airport is just ten minutes away, the tower does feel a bit like the gateway to the city. This is where the city centre starts, and the Tower marks that border, offering a scenic first impression of Berlin. I think that people may start to see Neukölln in a new light.
You've been very involved in this project. What has been your personal highlight?
My personal highlight of this project has been working with my dad. That’s been a really cool aspect of the project. It's a real once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, and it's enjoyable, too. We get along well, and I benefit a lot from his wisdom – of course, he knows a lot more than I do. But I think we complement each other. Obviously, this tower project is all about the building itself, but in the end, it's always about the people who make it happen. Working with such a great team is a lot of fun.
Nachhaltigkeit im Estrel Berlin
Nachhaltigkeit bedeutet für das Estrel, sorgsam mit Umwelt und Ressourcen umzugehen, gute Arbeitsbedingungen zu schaffen und das Unternehmen auch wirtschaftlich zukunftsfähig zu führen. Als Europas größter Convention-, Hotel- & Entertainment-Komplex trägt das Estrel gerade aufgrund der Dimensionen und der exponierten Stellung innerhalb der Branche eine besonders große Verantwortung als Dienstleister und Arbeitgeber.
Im letzten Jahr hat das Estrel eine eigene Stelle für Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement geschaffen, um die Transformation zum nachhaltigen Unternehmen strukturiert und konsequent voranzutreiben.
Aktuell befindet sich das Estrel im Zertifizierungsprozess „Sustainable Meetings“ von visitBerlin, einer international anerkannten Zertifizierung für Kongress Locations.

for the company. As Europe's largest convention-, hotel- & entertainment complex, the Estrel bears a particular responsibility as a service provider and employer, given its prominent position within the industry.
Over the past year, the Estrel has created a dedicated in-house sustainability management position, to lead and define our ongoing journey towards more sustainable corporate practices.
Currently, the Estrel is on track to obtain the “Sustainable Meetings” certification from visitBerlin, an internationally recognised green certification for congress locations.

Beispielsweise hat hier der Dreh für ein Promotion Video von „League of Legends“ stattgefunden, das Campus und Netzfest der re:publica kam hier zusammen und das temporäre „Museum of Now“ hat im Neukölln Speicher den passenden Ausstellungsort gefunden. Die 1923 als Lager für Stahl erbaute Halle ist 2.650 m 2 groß und derzeit für 199 Personen zugelassen.
Die Besonderheit ist die 10 m hohe stützenfreie Deckenkonstruktion aus Holzbalken, die der Halle einen unvergleichlichen Industriecharme verleiht. Die denkmalgeschützte Location kann unabhängig oder im Rahmen einer Veranstaltung im Estrel angemietet werden.
Just steps from the Estrel, the Neukölln Speicher is the perfect location for unforgettable events – anything from music videos and film shoots to parties and exhibitions. Previously, this unique location was used as the set for a “League of Legends” advert, served as a campus and event space for the renowned digital conference re:publica, and also provided the ideal exhibition space for the pop-up contemporary art show “Museum of Now”. The enormous factory hall, originally built as a steel warehouse, stretches over 2,650 m 2, with a current capacity of 199 people. Its stand-out feature is a 10-metre-high free-standing wood-beam ceiling, which lends the space its unique industrial charm. This historically registered location can be booked individually or as part of an event package at the Estrel.
Eine außergewöhnliche Location, die einiges zu bieten hat!
Ob Konzerte, Kutschfahrten oder wechselnde Ausstellungen, das Schloss Britz, das nur knappe 20 Autominuten vom Estrel entfernt ist, bietet vielfältige Möglichkeiten. Neben dem denkmalgeschützten Schloss Britz mit seinem ca. 2 Hektar großen Park und dem historischen Gutshof sind auf dem Gelände rund 50 Tiere u.a. Pferde, Hühner, Schafe, Ziegen und Gänse zuhause. Auch Kutschfahrten durch Britz werden hier angeboten.
Kulturell sorgt die Kulturstiftung Schloss Britz für Abwechslung: Neben dem Museum und den regelmäßig wechselnden Sonderausstellungen im Schloss selbst, werden unterschiedlichste Konzerte und Events im Kulturstall und auf der Freilichtbühne veranstaltet.
Das sich im Schloss Britz befindliche Restaurant und das kleine Hotel werden als Dependance des Estrel betrieben und eigenverantwortlich von den Azubis des Estrel gemanagt. Das Restaurant offeriert frische, regionale und internationale Spezialitäten. Im Sommer eignet sich die dazugehörige Sonnenterrasse besonders, um Kuchen und Kaffee zu genießen.
Auf dem Gelände selbst befindet sich auch der authentisch und aufwändig renovierte „Ochsenstall“. Mit 220 m²Fläche und dem unvergleichbaren Ambiente ist der „Ochsenstall“ die perfekte Location für Hochzeiten, Geburtstage oder Jubiläen für bis zu 100 Personen.
An extraordinary location with a lot to offer
From concerts, to horse-drawn carriages, to a rich programme of cultural exhibitions, Schloss Britz – just a 20-minute drive from the Estrel – offers a multitude of possibilities.
Schloss Britz is a registered historical building set across an approx. two-hectare park and farm estate. These expansive grounds are home to an array of animals, including horses, chickens, sheep, goats, and geese. Visitors can even round off their trip to Schloss Britz with a horse-drawn carriage ride around the local area.
The Schloss Britz Cultural Foundation has a variety of cultural offerings: in addition to the museum and regularly-rotating exhibitions at Schloss Britz itself, the onsite “Kulturstall” and open-air stage host a diverse range of concerts and events.
Kontaktlose, digitale Lösungen für Hotelgäste gewinnen immer mehr an Bedeutung. Das neue Programm Straiv vereinfacht im Estrel bereits seit letztem Jahr den Gästen und Mit ar beitern an der Rezeption den schnellen Check-in/-out. Alle Lösungen, die das Estrel von Straiv nutzt, sind optimal aufeinander abgestimmt, individuell anpassbar und bieten den Gästen eine nahtlose digitale Hotel Experience, eine App wird hierfür nicht benötigt.
Auch mit der Anschaffung von workday setzt das Estrel ein Zeichen - weltweit gehören bereits große Unternehmen zu den Nutzern, jedoch ist das Estrel das erste Hotel Deutschlands, das mit der Cloud-basierten Plattform alle Prozesse in der Personalabteilung optimiert. Noch in diesem Monat beginnt die Implementierung und in den kommenden Wochen soll eine digitale Personalakte die alte Ordnerstruktur ablösen, eine moderne Zeit erfassung inklusive Urlaubsplanung eingeführt und das Recruiting und Onboarding neuer Mitarbeiter optimiert werden.
The restaurant and boutique hotel located inside Schloss Britz are operated by the Estrel and managed independently by our trainees. A menu of fresh regional and international delicacies is served at the restaurant, and in the summer months, the terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy afternoon coffee and cake in the sun.
The estate is also home to the “Ochsenstall”, an event space that is the result of a meticulous historical renovation project. With an ample size of 220 m2 and incomparable rustic ambience, the Ochsenstall is the perfect location for weddings, birthdays, and anniversary parties of up to 100 guests.
Contactless digital solutions are increasingly favoured by hotel guests. The new programme Straiv, introduced at the Estrel last year, has streamlined the check-in/-out process for both our guests and reception staff. All of the Straiv solutions in operation at the Estrel are optimally synched and individually customisable, offering guests a seamless hotel stay without the need to download an app.
By adopting workday human resources technology, the Estrel is sending a signal –existing users include major corporations world wide, yet the Estrel is the first hotel in Germany to optimise its HR processes with the help of this cloud-based platform. Implementation is already beginning this month: Over the coming weeks, outdated filing systems will be replaced by digital personnel files. The platform will introduce a modern clocking-in system with an annual leave scheduling feature, and will optimise the recruiting and on-boarding of new team members.

„Stars in Concert“ feierte im vergangenen Jahr im Estrel Showtheater ein unglaubliches Jubiläum: Seit 25 Jahren begeistern großartige Doppelgänger in der einzigartigen Live-Show des Produzenten Bernhard Kurz das Publikum.
Hinter jedem Künstler, der für die Show engagiert wird, steht eine individuelle Erfolgsstory.

Sie stand bereits für diverse Filmproduktionen als Marilyn vor der Kamera. Außerdem führt sie regelmäßig für das weltberühmte Londoner Auktionshaus Christies bei Versteigerungen die Original-Kleider der Monroe vor.
Multitalent Rachel Hiew, die bei „Stars in Concert“ gleich mehrere Weltstars perfekt imitiert (Cher, JLo, Amy Winehouse und Agnetha von ABBA) stellte ihr vielseitiges Talent als Sängerin und Tänzerin in nahezu allen europäischen Ländern unter Beweis.
