TRANSFORMED HumeRidge Church of Christ Magazine

OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2015

At HumeRidge we seek to live out our mission, “Transforming lives to Christ by experiencing and reflecting God’s love together”. To share in the stories of people’s lives and witness the transformation which can only come through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is one of this life’s greatest treasures. Our lives do not happen in a vacuum but influence those around us. If we want to be deliberate in our mission to see lives transformed and see our church unleash its full potential one question you and I can ask ourselves today is, “Is what I am doing today hindering or building the Kindgom of God?” Now, it’s a simple question but when we truly stop to consider it in light of what the Bible says it can hit home hard. One verse from the Bible that has often struck home for me when reflecting on this question is John 13:35 that says, “By this shall all people know you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Loving others can be hard work and painful as much as it is energising and life giving. However, if we are loving one another well we are experiencing and reflecting God’s love and the world will know we are disciples of Christ, we will see lives transformed and be transformed ourselves in the process!! That’s something worth fighting for in order to build the Kingdom of God today!! “Love one another”. As you read through this edition of TRANSFORMED you will hear the stories of lives being transformed by experiencing God’s love, as individuals and together! As we as a church embark on the next stage of our adventure with God I invite you to consider where God may be asking you to join Him in building into the Kingdom of God be it through supporting a commitment day project, going to youth camp or on a mission, or simply being more deliberate in loving your family or a neighbour. Together we can see lives transformed in our church, our community and beyond. Together we can be the ‘churched unleashed’.

Caloundra is our favourite family destination for summer holidays. Ever since our children were little we have loved the beach, the sunshine and the festive atmosphere of this part of the Sunshine Coast. But our holiday in Caloundra is never complete without at least one visit to Moffatt Beach, which our daughter Madi affectionately calls, Dog Beach. You see, at Moffatt Beach, dogs are allowed off leash each morning and afternoon, and our daughter loved dogs! Madi just loved to see these dogs of every breed running and playing at the beach – away from the confines of their small back yards, and free from the leash that would inhibit their joyful activity. We want to see the Church unleased too! We believe in a church unshackled and running free to be all that God intends it to 2I

be. Not confined by fear or dull religiosity; not entangled by sin or unforgiveness; not shackled by ego or conflict or selfcenteredness. No. Rather, we see a Church unleased to persevere, to reach out, to be a godly influence and to generously help others. Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, written around 57AD from Macedonia, reveals this theme. Paul wants to see the church reaching out, actively caring, praying, giving, persevering and sharing the gospel. The letter is written against a backdrop of persecution, sorrow, trouble from within and trouble from without. Paul even had to defend his apostleship and sort out some conflict. And yet the letter contains some absolute gems of biblical imagery and truth that see a Church free to be all it can be – despite difficult circumstances.

COMMITMENT DAY 2015 SUNDAY 8TH NOVEMBER

BY DALE WHITE

There are so many gems in 2 Corinthians, and when understood in context they speak volumes to an unleashed church today. There is this great encouragement to us even in our weaknesses and struggles: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:7-9 NIV). And there is also the challenge. We would all do well to respond to Paul’s plea: “as Christ's ambassadors... we speak for Christ when we plead, "Come back to God!" (2 Corinthians 5:20 NLT). Then we might experience the freedom that comes from truly knowing the Lord. “For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17 NLT).

SERIES – CHURCH UNLEASHED In September we looked at the first 3 chapters of 2nd Corinthians – Unleashed to Care, Unleashed to Influence, and Unleashed to Transformation. The series continues into October and November on Sunday Mornings (9am): 18 October 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 Unleashed to Share the Gospel 25 October 2 Corinthians 8:1-15 Unleashed to Help Others 1 November 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 Unleashed to Generosity 8 November Commitment Day

BY DALE WHITE

This year the theme for Commitment Day is Church Unleashed. We want to see our Church set free – unleashed – to fulfil all of God’s purposes in our community and wider world. The purpose of the Commitment Day Projects in 2015 is to invest finances and resources into areas where we are already seeing God at work. These include our own youth and children’s ministries; our international ministries; and the Gandep Project bringing hope and assistance to a remote and needy community in Papua New Guinea. We are seeing where God is at work, noticing the ministries He is blessing, observing the obvious needs around us – and then seeking to give them the emphasis and resources that they need to succeed! We want to see 4I

HumeRidge unleashed to care, to influence, to outreach, to evangelism, and to generosity. In addition, over recent years there has been some momentum to clearing our building loan. Just 10 years since the major expansion of our facilities, it is now our achievable goal to clear the debt within the next year. So on Commitment Day, November 8, we simply invite you to do two things: 1 Make a special one-off gift to support one or more of our five Commitment Day Projects. 2 Sign our Commitment Card indicating how much you plan to give to support the ongoing ministry of the Church next year (including Building Loan).

“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously” (2 Corinthians 9:6)

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

5 SIMPLE STEPS 1 Select one or more of the five Commitment Day Projects, and pray about how much you should give.

Commitment Cards, along with further information, are included in our 2015 Commitment Day Pack. These will be available to all members, or can be collected from our Info Counter and Office. As you prayerfully consider your commitment to HumeRidge in the coming year, we invite you to discuss any questions you may have with any of our pastors or elders. Please consider your part in Commitment Day 2015 as together we continue to Transform Lives and move forward as a Church.

2 Complete the Commitment Day Projects side of the Commitment Card to indicate your one off gift allocations. 3 Pray, asking God to show you how much you can give to regular giving in support of ministry at HumeRidge in 2016. 4 Complete the Regular Giving 2016 side of the Commitment Card. 5 Seal your Commitment Day Card in the Commitment Day envelope. Bring the envelope to the service on Commitment Day, 8th November 2015 - or at another time if you are away on November 8.

COMMITMENT DAY PROJECTS 2015

You are invited to make a special one-off gift to our Commitment Day Projects. Each project sees our Church unleashed for greater influence in our community and world. Furthermore, our Clear the Loan project has the capacity to unleash the Church from debt so that more funds are released into ministry and mission. You choose where the money goes! So please select a project and give generously on Commitment Day November 8. Commitment Cards & Envelopes will be available in the Commitment Day Pack, in the HumeNews and Info Counter, or by request to the Church Office.

TRANSFORMING

Clear the Loan / Unleashed from Debt It’s 10 years since the major redevelopment of our facility that now provides a 1500 seat auditorium, 300 seat chapel, gymnasium, office complex, counselling centre, meeting rooms, playground, cafÊ and expanded car park. Our building loans have reduced from $2 million to around $300,000. Now it is our goal to see our Church Loans completely cleared by next year!

TRANSFORMING

HumeRidge International Ministries We are connecting with migrants, refugees & international students from all around the world. Our international ministries include HumeRidge English Centre, Homework Help, Multi-cultural Playgroup, and more. People from all nations are attending our Sunday services too! Gifts to this project will provide resources for teaching, transport and social needs. This has been a new area for the Church in recent years and we want to see it grow!

HumeRidge Youth & Kids Ministry Youth & Children’s Ministries are among the strengths of HumeRidge Church of Christ. But this is only because people have invested time, energy and finances into this vital area over the years! Your gifts will be used for equipment, resources, transport, Youth Camp sponsorship and more... but all for outreach and discipleship through our own youth & children’s ministries. Our Church / Our Home We all want a church we can call home, and we are blessed with an excellent multi-purpose facility. But we continuously need to upgrade, improve and renovate to keep pace with changing times. This project releases much needed funds to Our Church/Our Home. It’s for anything related to our own ministry and our own facility – but includes upgrades for the downstairs kids & youth area, improvements in video technology, and more as funds allow. Gandep Project (Papua New Guinea) Our Missions Project this year is the Gandep Project. This is an infrastructure project in Papua New Guinea on the Ramu River flood plain to support a remote area of 170 villages and 20,000 people. This ambitious project is being undertaken by HumeRidge Church of Christ, in partnership with Churches of Christ Overseas Aid, and will assist the local people in health, education and trade. Churches of Christ are active in the area and run a Bible College in Gandep which we will also support. See www.gandepproject.org for more info – and please indicate if you require a tax deduction receipt for your gift to this project.

Youth camp is always a brilliant way to finish off the youth group year and it is always proves to be highlight for me. Attending youth camps as a youth kid and now as a leader I have many weird and wonderful memories from four years of camps. Camp is a weekend at the Sunshine Coast chock-a-block full of fun and crazy activities, dancing, pool time, handball comps, input sessions, new friends, beach walks, laughs and more dancing! One of my favourite things about youth camp is the atmosphere which is hard to put precisely into words. The best way I can describe it is this sense of acceptance and unity you can feel and it really is amazing to be a part of a group where everyone is always included and that get along so easily all weekend. From my past youth camps what I’ve

valued the most would be the chance to make and cement new friendships especially within clump groups. I was new to youth group when I came on my first camp and by the end of the weekend I really felt a part of things and that I belonged with this crazy and incredible bunch of young people. Another aspect of camp I’ve really valued have been the sessions which give input on ‘God Stuff’ and it’s a chance for people who aren’t from a church background to learn about God and question things for themselves. The sessions always lead to good conversations and are such a good opportunity to talk about some real things that don’t always get spoken about. Youth camp is honestly a fantastic experience and so to any young people thinking about coming along I can’t encourage you enough to register and get excited for a blast of a weekend. JAMIE PATIKURA

L10 Conference 2015 was a blast and far exceeded our expectations with 200 Young Adults from Churches of Christ all over Queensland converging on the Sunshine Coast for a weekend of fun activities, CommUNITY and GOD. We saw God move amongst our gathering of late teens and 20-somethings. It was a weekend to refresh, recharge and reignite our LOVE and PASSION for God. At our opening Main Rally on Friday evening, Pastor Peter Millican preached about letting go of labels that people give you. This set the tone for a great weekend to come and was evident by the way people mixed, mingled and played board games under the stars late into the night. Live music played at our L10 CafĂŠ stage where over 500 cups of coffee, chocolate and chai lattes were sold over the weekend! As the sun rose on Saturday morning, so did about 40 Young Adults - bright eyed and raring to go for a powerful hour of acoustic Praise and Worship right up until breakfast. Our second Main Rally saw Red Frogs boss 16 I

Andy Gourley speak about ‘What is in your basket? We were encouraged to pursue what can be done with our God given talents and gifts. Andy was a raging hit and inspired all. The following Master Class Sessions added to the impact of the weekend. Many responded to the passion of leaders from various Churches of Christ in SE Queensland who shared from their hearts and helped others engage deeper with what God was doing in their lives. When we first started planning this Conference, the overwhelming response we received from people all over Queensland was that they wanted a weekend away with fun activities, God at the centre and opportunities to worship God together. Well, fun activities it was with our Red Frogs Carnival running in the pouring rain throughout the afternoon. No one blinked an eyelid at the rain that was getting heavier and heavier as the hours rolled on. We enjoyed Church versus Church in Bubble Soccer, Mate versus Mate in Archery Tag and everyone lined up to have a turn on

God. The final chapter of the Master Classes ran throughout the morning with a major highlight being Westside Church of Christ’s Katrina Hampson’s Session about Hearing God’s Voice.

our GIANT Slip n Slide. Not to mention the beach only 500 metres down the road. Young Adults Pastor Darryll Stephen from Elevation Church on the Gold Coast preached the house down in our third Main Rally on Saturday Night with an overwhelming response from our congregation. He spoke with passion about struggles in his life growing up and how Jesus saved him from almost certain death at the hands of thugs in the wild and crazy suburbs of South London.

We drew to a close our fantastic time of CommUNITY and encouragement from God with one final Main Rally. It was evident in this Rally people were moving to the beat of GOD with our L10 Worship Band stepping it up a gear in their leading of worship. They sang with pride, passion and enthusiasm for God and people responded. We had people singing and dancing and praising God from their seats. We had people jumping and shouting Jesus’ name at the top of their lungs because we honestly believed that through the power of the Holy Spirit, God and His son Jesus, were present and really moving in our hearts. Pastor Paul Redfern from Rivers Church of Christ closed us out and preached with passion and heart as he spoke about the importance of keeping grounded to your HOME in God.

It was a wonderful moment to see many young adults recommit their lives to God in response to Darryll’s message. The enthusiasm ignited for the work of God kept everyone going as we danced and sang into the night at the Skypilot concert.

HOWEVER... The weekend wasn’t over... As one final act for L10 Conference 2015 we invited all 200 attendees to break off and spread around the camp site to pray for each other. As we walked around taking photos of the small clusters of people we noticed one thing ... they were all doing CommUNITY together. We saw HumeRidge People praying with Whitehill and Southport Young Adults. Rivers, Kingaroy and Warwick were mixing in together and lots of other small churches who were represented praying for their new friends. This is what L10 Conference was all about - A Camp for Young Adults to be CommUNITY together under Gods name.

Once again, Sunday morning started with a Praise and Worship session at 6am that flowed into a time of Communion led by Young Adults Pastor Ben Kulp from Whitehill Church of Christ. There were another 40 people who joined in for this and we sang like we’ve never sung before in praise of our great

Although everyone left feeling worn out and physically drained from a full-on weekend we continue to receive reports that people are firing in their love for God. They are feeling emotionally and mentally recharged for ministry and life in their own churches. What a fantastic outcome!

GANDEP It’s all about the people! The GANDEP Project may seem an ambitious infrastructure project but in reality the project is more than roads and trucks. The GANDEP Project is about the people. Churches of Christ have been active in PNG for over 50 years and have seen people come to know God and seek to transform their communities for Christ. The rugged terrain and isolation sometimes hinder the work of bringing the light of Christ into the villages as well prevent people accessing health care, education and trade resources. To help us connect with the human face of GANDEP we’d like to share Robin’s personal story and about the Convention. God is transforming lives in the GANDEP region and we are excited to join with Him! 18 I

"My name is Robin. I was born, 1970 in the Sepic area and went to a community school. My mother moved to Yip, where I finished my Year 6 and later to Engoram for high school. One day at high school I was wrongly accused and the Deputy Head Master attacked me, hitting me over the head. Not yet a Christian, I had to "pay-back" the student who caused my trouble, so I hurt him badly and was suspended. I came back to school troubled by these events and I felt useless and in a dark place. I left school and started doing many bad things. Still feeling useless I went home to my mother's village on the Keram River, Yar. Yar is a village of about 300400 and Pastor John Bolton had bought the Gospel there many years before. In this dark condition, I was drawn to God to change my life, so I committed my life to Him, asking Jesus to forgive all my sins. My life was changed. In 1995 when I was 25 I married Sophia. At 28 I was baptised and started serving in my village church, thankful to God for His saving grace. Later, I was asked to serve as chairman of the Keram-Grass Region which covered 15 Church of Christ churches. I served there for 9 years but I wanted to understand the Bible more so I could bring the lost to Jesus. In 2010 I applied to the Gandep Bible School but I couldn't get a placement. God gave me a vision that I would be leading a team with music into the Keram areas - Keram For Christ - and we would save souls by God's grace. In 2012 I was accepted into Gandep. My family - wife Sophia, children Samantha (20), Harron (14), and Alice (6) live at Gandep, grow our food and I study about evangelism, pastoral care, and children's education to reach the unsaved, so God's Kingdom can come."

THE CONVENTION Praise God for an awesome convention with close to 2000 people in attendance. The majority of the attendees were Waran but large contingents from the Kianying Balang language area on the Biwat River and the La’o language area on the upper Keram River, as well as smaller groups added to our number. The worship band from Bunam Village led a long song service before each message. During the singing, many people danced in joy before the Lord. I noted that many of the older dancers had first begun to dance to the Lord in the revivals of the mid-80’s, when the Lord first really took hold of their lives. On the first day, the interns, their coach, and Bethaney presented a skit which was well received by the audience. In case some didn’t get the message Bethaney delivered a fantastic explanation to drive home the point of the skit and gave a spot-on illustration from Waran culture. I shared the preaching time with Selwyn Atibam, a young Waran man who recently

completed Gandep Bible College. Though we hadn’t spoken prior to the conference our sermons meshed together and built on one another in amazing ways. Many people let us know that God was definitely using us to speak to them. Thank you, Holy Spirit. Much of what happens at a convention happens informally as Christians, who don’t see each other much, gather to talk and encourage one another. When the group from Munyet village moved into the house next to us, they had their own little revival going on, with prayer time at 5:00 am followed by Jesus shouts (Example: Who do you love? JESUS!)! They also ended the day late at night with prayer and a few more Jesus shouts. Maybe those in our house didn’t always appreciate their pre-dawn enthusiasm, but I’m sure the God Who Never Sleeps didn’t mind at all! On Sunday morning we all gathered by the riverside to witness 95 people being baptised. There was much rejoicing and celebrating. We praise God for these new family members and all He is doing!
